Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneThe appeal of advertising to buying motives can have both negative and positive effects consumers may be convinced to buy a product of poor quality or high price because of an advertisement. For example, some advertisers have appealed to people’s desire for better fue1 economy for their cars by advertising automotive products that improve gasoline mileage. Some of the products work. Others are worthless and a waste of consumers’ money.Sometimes advertising is intentionally misleading. A few years ago a brand of bread was offer to dieters (节食者)with the message that there were fewer calories (热量单位, 大卡)in every slice. It turned out that the bread was not dietetic(适合于节食的), but just regular bread. There were fewer calories because it was sliced very thin, but there were the same number of calories in every loaf.On the positive side, emotional appeals may respond to a consumer’ s real concerns.Consider fire insurance. Fire insurance may be sold by appealing to fear of loss. Bui fear of loss is the real reason for fire insurance. The security of knowing that property is protected by insurance makes the purchase of fire insurance a worthwhile investment for most people. If consumers consider the quality of the insurance plans as well as the message in the ads, they will benefit from the advertising. Each consumer must evaluate her or his own situation. Are the benefits of the product important enough to justify buying it? Advertising is intended to appeal to consumers, but it does not force them to buy the product. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that “reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible.Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also public activity: It can be seen and observed.Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny. If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done throughteaching that will aid the child in the quest (探索)for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children. When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfil them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of leaning to read by reading.61. S. leadership in public relations is being threatened by PR efforts in other countries. Ten years ago, for example, the world’s top five public relations agencies were American-owned. In 1991, only one was. The British in particular are becoming more sophisticated and creative. A recent survey found that more than half of all British companies include PR as part of their corporate(公司的)planning activities, compared to about one-third of U. S. companies. It may not be long before London replaces New York as the capital of PR.Why is America lagging behind in the global PR race? Firstly, Americans as a whole tend to be fairly provincial and take more of an interest in local affairs. Knowledgeof world geography, for example, has never been strong in this country. Secondly, Americans lag behind their European and Asian counterparts(相应的人)in knowing a second language. Less than 5 percent of Burson-Marshall’s U. S. employees know two languages. Ogilvy and Mather has about the same percentage. Conversely, some European firms have half or more of their employees fluent in a second language. Finally, people involved in PR abroad tend to keep a closer eye on international affairs. In the financial PR area, for instance, most Americans read The Wall Street Journal. Overseas, their counterparts read the Journal as well as the Financial Times of London and The Economist, publications not often read in this country.Perhaps the PR industry might take a lesson from Ted Turner of CNN (Cable News Network).Turner recently announced that the word “ foreign ” would no longer be used on CNN news broadcasts. According to Turner, global communications have made the nations of the world so interdependent that there is no longer any such things as foreign.66. According to the passage, U. S. leadership in public relations is being threatened because of ____ [单选题] *A. an unparalleled increase in the number of public relations companiesB. shrinking cultural differences and new communications technologiesC. the decreasing number of multinational corporations in the U. The word “provincial” (Line 2, Para. most probably means “_____” . [单选题] *A. limited in outlook(正确答案)B. like people from the provincesC. rigid in thinkingD. interested in world financial affairs69. We learn from the third paragraph that employees in the American PR industry _____. [单选题] *A. speak at least one foreign language fluentlyB. are ignorant about world geographyC. are not as sophisticated as their European counterparts(正确答案)D. enjoy reading a great variety of English business publications70. What lesson might the PR industry take from Ted Turner of CNN? [单选题] *A. American PR companies should be more internationally-minded.(正确答案)B. The American PR industry should develop global communications technologies.C. People working in PR should be more fluent in foreign languages.D. People involved in PR should avoid using the word “foreign”.Passage FourAmtrak (美国铁路客运公司)was experiencing a downswing in ridership (客运量)along the lines comprising its rail system. Of major concern to Amtrak and its advertising agency DDB Needham, were the long-distance western routes where ridership had been declining significantly. At one time, trains were the only practical way to cross the vast areas of the west. Trains were fast, very luxurious, and quite convenient compared to other forms of transportation existing at the time. However, times change and the automobile becameAmerica’s standard of convenience. Also, air travel had easily established itself as the fastest method of traveling great distances. Therefore, the task for DDB Needham was to encourage consumers to consider other aspects of train travel in order to change their attitudes and increase the likelihood that trains would be considered for travel in the west. Two portions of the total market were targeted:1) anxious fliers—those concerned with safety, relaxation, and cleanliness; 2) travel-lovers—those viewing themselves as relaxed, casual, and interested in the travel experience as part of their vacation. The agency then developed a campaign that focused on travel experiences such as freedom, escape, relaxation, and enjoyment of the great western outdoors. It stressed experiences gained by using the trains and portrayed western train trips as wonderful adventures.Advertisements showed pictures of the beautiful scenery tint could be enjoyed along some of the more famous western routes and emphasized the romantic names of some of these trains (Empire Builder, etc. ) . These ads were strategically placed among family-oriented TV shows and programs involving nature and America in order to most effectively reach target audiences. Results were impressive. The Empire Builder, which was focused on in one ad, enjoyed a 15 percent increase in profits on its Chicago to Seattle route.71. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage? [单选题] *A. To show the inability of trains to compete with planes with respect to speed and convenience.B. To stress the influence of the automobile on America’ s standard of convenience.C. To emphasize the function of travel agencies in market promotion.D. To illustrate the important role of persuasive communication in changing consumer attitudes.(正确答案)72. It can be inferred from the passage that the drop in Amtrak ridership was due to the fact that _____ [单选题] *A. trains were not suitable for short distance passenger transportationB. trains were not the fastest and most convenient form of transportation(正确答案)C. trains were not as fast and convenient as they used to beD. trains could not compete with planes in terms of luxury and convenience73. To encourage consumers to travel by train, DDB Needham emphasized _____. [单选题] *A. the freedom and convenience provided on trainsB. the practical aspects of train travelC. the adventurous aspects of train trips(正确答案)D. the safety and cleanliness of train trips74. The train ads were placed among family-oriented TV programs involving nature and America because _____ [单选题] *A. they could focus on meaningful travel experiencesB. they could increase the effectiveness of the TV programsC. their profits could be increased by some 15 percentD. most travel-lovers and nervous fliers were believed to be among the audiences(正确答案)75. The Earth's climate is changing at an alarming rate due to human activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrialization. These activities release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, leading to global warming and extreme weather events. One of the most evident effects of climate change is rising sea levels. As temperatures increase, polar ice caps and glaciers melt, causing oceans to expand and flood coastal areas.Low-lying countries like Bangladesh and Tuvalu are especially vulnerable to sea-level rise, putting millions of people at risk of displacement.Another consequence of climate change is the disruption of ecosystems and biodiversity. Rising temperatures alter habitats and threaten the survival of countless plant and animal species. This loss of biodiversity reduces the resilience of ecosystems, making them more susceptible to diseases and pests.Furthermore, climate change exacerbates food insecurity and water scarcity. Erratic weather patterns disrupt agricultural production, leading to crop failure and food shortages. Droughts and floods also affect access to clean water, posing a threat to human health and sanitation. In conclusion, climate change is a global crisis that requires immediate action. If you're interested in starting a book club, you shouldconsider the following options and recommendations. Before recruiting, think carefully about how many people you want to participate and also what the club’s focus will be. For example, some book clubs focus exclusively on fiction, others on nonfiction. Some are even more specific, focusing only on a particular type such as mysteries, science fiction, or romance. Others have a more flexible and open focus. All of these possibilities can make for a great club, but it is important to decide on a focus at the beginning. So the guidelines will be clear to the group and potential member. After setting the basic principles, recruitment can begin. Notify friends and family, advertise in the local newspaper and on bulletin boards in local stores, colleges, libraries, and bookstores. When enough people express interest, schedule a kick-off meeting during which decisions will be made about specific guidelines that will ensure the club runs smoothly. This meeting will need to establish where the group will meet (rotating homes or a public place such as a library or a coffee shop); how often the group will meet, and on what day of the week and at what time; how long the meetings will be; how books will be chosen and by whom; who will lead the group (if anyone); and whether snacks will be served and if so, who will supply them. By the end of this meeting, these guidelines should be set and a book selection and date for the first official meeting should be finalized.Planning and running a book club is not without challenges, but when a book club is run effectively, the experience can be extremely rewarding for everyone involved.11. The Maya were an intelligent, culturally rich people whose achievements were many. They had farms, beautiful palaces, and cities with many buildings. The Mayan people knew a lot about nature and the world around them. This knowledge helped them to live a better life than most people of that time, because they could use it to make their lives more comfortable and rewarding. Knowledge about tools and farming, for instance, made their work easier and more productive. The Maya believed in many gods, including rain gods, sun gods, and corn gods. The people built large temples to honour them. Skillful workers built cities around these temples. It was difficult for them to construct these cities, because they had no horses to carry the heavy stones they used to build with. Workers had to carry all of the building materials themselves. Today, many of these ancient Mayan cities and temples are still standing.Usually, only the priests lived in the cities. The other people lived in small villages in the forests. Their houses were much simpler than the elaborate structures in the cities. They lived in small huts with no windows. Most Maya lived a simple life close to nature.Measuring time was important to the Maya, so the Mayan priests made a system to keep track of time, and they made a calendar in which the year was divided into 18 months of 20 days each with five days left over. We seem to get one food scare after another.Several of these, recently, have concerned genetically modified (GM,转基因) foods. Although some experts tell us that these foods will do us no harm and that the concern about them is just speculative, other experts say that GM food is potentially very damaging to health. At the very best, the jury is still out on the matter. In many countries, products which have been genetically modified are supposed to show this information on their labels, but now some of the large food producers are saying that it is growing increasingly difficult to separate GM food from theconventional varieties.Pesticides (杀虫剂) and chemical fertilizers are also a cause of concern. In the last few years, a great many people have started to buy organic produce, although this is much more expensive than that which is grown using conventional methods. They do so in an effort to stop filling their bodies, and those of their children, with poisonous chemicals. Thus there is an increased demand for organic food and this is not a temporary fashion. But some experts claim that organically grown food is no healthier than other food, because the poison level of the latter is not so high as to be harmful. Those who push for organic food may not be objective, but are part of the powerful food lobby, the chief concern of which is to increase organic food production with a corresponding increase in profits. The use of additives (添加剂) is still another source of anxiety to consumers. These are often added to food to supposedly improve the colour or the flavour. However, it is thought that some of these may be the cause of allergies (过敏),or even the cause of behavioural problems in children. We have to eat to live. The problem is: what is safe to eat?26. At my desk, I can breathe the fresh air in the morning and enjoy the warm sunlight through the window in winter. Meanwhile, there is no factory around that produces noise and pollution. During the break, I can step down the stairs and take a walk in the garden surrounding the office building. 深圳大学英语入学考试
首先讲的是英语入学考试,根据校历,在开学后不久(9月10日星期一中午)你们就会进行一场英语考试,考后会根据成绩高低分为A-level、B-level两个级别。
如果你的考试成绩在全级排名大概前25%的话,你就可以进A-level的班级学习大英课程。
A-level注重拔高,课程难度相对较大,平时作业可能会多一点,做pre(上台用英语进行演讲)次数会比较多,不过这些具体还是要看老师。
B-level
