Professor Lee Sing Kong, Director, NIE,Faculty, staff, distinguished guests,And my fellow graduands,A very good afternoon to all!It is my great pleasure and privilege to give the valedictory speech on behalf of my dearest classmates! It seems that everyone is tired of the generic valedictory speech and it is not easy to come up with an entertaining and memorable one. I searched internet for some videos and I found that to make their speeches more interesting, people crack jokes, quote hip-pop lines, sing a song with a guitar or compose a rap like Eminem. I am sorry that I can’t do these things. So I borrow one trick that I hope will work for me. Now, ladies and gentlemen, please put up your right hand, at the count of three, touch the shoulder of your neighbor. One, two, three. Now I am sure that everyone has been ‘touched’ by my speech.I still remember my first day in NIE. It was a beautiful day. When I was standing on the lush green lawn, I found myself in a mood for vacation and relaxation. I was impressed by the efficiency in the arrangement of a series of events, hearing NIE Director’s speech, meeting teachers and former students, learning how to use library and other facilities. I was also excited about the courses which were completely new to a literature student. What I found most striking was the multiethnic background and diverse educational background of our teachers. They come from China (including mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan), Vietnam, Germany, Malaysia, the States, Australia and Singapore. They also received their degrees from prestigious universities in various countries. Their personal experiences not only showcase diversity and multiethnic harmony, two core ideas valued in Singapore but also enlighten us from a myriad of perspectives. Here I just want to mention how diversity and harmony can be integrated in our real-life teaching and researching.First, we need to appreciate diversity and construct harmony in our teaching. we should be aware of the diversity in our teaching conditions with different tangible facilities, class sizes, lengths of courses, and areas with varied socio-economic situations. Our students are diverse too. They differ in their motivations, proficiency levels, personalities and the like. They have also kept changing. For example, students from developed areas may learn more efficiently if we adopt new technologies, like screencasting, blogs and online feedback, as they are digital natives themselves. However, students from poor areas may benefit more from a combination of ‘more old than new’ technologies according to the availabilities of computers and internet access in their classrooms. What we have learned in NIE is a multitude of theories and methods. The efficiency and usefulnes s of them depends on ‘how’ and ‘when’ we apply them. In our real teaching, we should aim at a harmonious integration of these theories and methods with all situational variables taken into account.Second, diversity and harmony are also valued in our researching. One perfect example is in our research methods class. Dr. Hu Guangwei and Dr. Shih Chih-Min, of different personalities and teaching styles, work towards our better understanding of both quantitativePersonally, I believe, the ultimate goal of academic research is to accommodate differences and contribute to a better understanding of the world that we live in. Here I want to stress one particular thing that I learnt from Dr. Hu. He asked me twice in his feedback to my literature review ‘What is your take on this? You need to let your readers hear your voice’. After the first term, I realized how little I knew about academic research and writing conventions for academic papers. Here I learned how to quote and how to hedge. However, I probably went to another extreme. I was so careful about every statement I made that I lost my own voice in my quotes. Dr. Hu has inspired me to seek my own voice and Dr. Dahl’s and Dr. Chandra’s courses have equipped me with ways of making myself heard. Steve Jobs, the Apple founder once said, ‘Don’t be trapped by dogma —which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become.’ This is also my wish for my fellow classmates. Both in our lives and in academic research, our voice and our unique contribution is of foremost importance. I hope all of us can be more daring and innovative in trying new methods and standing up for what we believe in.On behalf of my classmates, I would like to take a moment to thank MOE for covering all of our bills, NIE administration for having done their best to help us settle down and ELL department for offering us most useful courses. None of us will be here today if not for our NIE professors and lecturers. These extraordinary people have influenced us in countless ways. They honed our critical thinking and analytical skills, they instilled team spirit in us through group presentations, they enlightened us to develop our potential to the fullest and they devoted themselves to both our educational and spiritual needs. Most importantly, they have set themselves as perfect examples for the kind of teacher we all wish to be. A special thanks goes to Dr. Ramona Tang, who is a God-sent angel for us and will always be our sister. We also thank our parents and families, though most of them are absent today, for their unconditional love and support. Without all of you, we wouldn’t have gone so far.Congratulations, 2011 PGDELT class. We’ve finally made it. We’ve completed our studies here. However, our academic journey does not end here in NIE. In his final class, Dr.David Caldwell told us about his experience of obtaining a Ph. D. degree and incidentally, a week ago, Dr. Shih sent us a letter encouraging us to plan early for our Ph.D. studies. So therei s still a long way to go. Our graduation today is just a ‘stopover’ rather than our destination. It is where we embark on a new journey. One thing we should never forget is that no matter what struggle is awaiting us, we are not fighting alone because we have so many excellent NIE teachers on our side. Most importantly, 35 PGDELT students, we are a family.Thank you! An Introduction to ChinatownOn the surface, Chinatown is prosperous - a "model slum," some have called it - with the lowest crime rate, highest employment and least juvenile delinquency of any city district. Walk through its crowded streets at any time of day, and every shop is doing a brisk and businesslike trade: restaurant after restaurant is booming; there are storefront displays of shiny squids, clawing crabs and clambering lobster; and street markets offer overflowing piles of exotic green vegetables, garlic and ginger root. Chinatown has the feel of a land of plenty, and the reason why lies with the Chinese themselves: even here, in the very core of downtown Manhattan, they have been careful to preserve their own way of dealing with things, preferring to keep affairs close to the bond of the family and allowing few intrusions into a still-insular culture. There have been several concessions to Westerners - storefront signs now offer English translations, and Haagen Dazs and Baskin Robbins ice-cream stores have opened on lower Mott Street - but they can't help but seem incongruous. The one time of the year when Chinatown bursts open is during the Chinese New Year festival, held each year on the first full moon after January 19, when a giant dragon runs down Mott Street to the accompaniment of firecrackers, and the gutters run with ceremonial dyes.Beneath the neighborhood's blithely prosperous facade, however, there is a darker underbelly. Sharp practices continue to flourish, with traditional extortion and protection rackets still in business. Non-union sweatshops - their assembly lines grinding from early morning to late into the evening - are still visited by the US Department of Labor, who come to investigate workers' testimonies of being paid below minimum wage for seventy-plus-hour work weeks. Living conditions are abysmal for the poorer Chinese - mostly recent immigrants and the elderly - who reside in small rooms in overcrowded tenements ill-kept by landlords. Yet, because the community has been cloistered for so long and has only just begun to seek help from city officials for its internal problems, you won't detect any hint of difficulties unless you reside in Chinatown for a considerable length of time. MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING(“MOU”)RE: PURCHASE OF NORWEGIAN PA VILION AT THE SHANGHAI EXPO SITEThe Seller: Innovation Norway c/o Norway at EXPO 2010The Buyer: Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology(The Seller and the Buyer are hereinafter jointly referred to as the “Parties”) WHEREAS:1.Innovation Norway c/o Norway at EXPO 2010 (hereafte r referred to as the “Seller”)constructed the Norwegian Pavilion located in C-10 Section in the Shanghai EXPOsite (hereinafter referred to as the “Pavilion”) for the World Expo Shanghai 2010(hereinafter referred to as the “EXPO”);2.The Seller has the exclusive title over the Pavilion. It is easy enough to construct a geek show if you start with a cannibal. The secret of "Silence" is that it doesn't start with the cannibal--it arrives at him, through the eyes and minds of a young woman. "Silence of the Lambs" is the story of Clarice Starling, the FBI trainee played by Jodie Foster, and the story follows her without substantial interruption. Dr. Hannibal Lecter lurks at the heart of the story, a malevolent but somehow likable presence--likable because he likes Clarice, and helps her. But Lecter, as played by Anthony Hopkins, is the sideshow, and Clarice is in the center ring. The popularity of Jonathan Demme's movie is likely to last as long as there is a market for being scared. Like "Nosferatu," "Psycho" and "Halloween," it illustrates that the best thrillers don't age. Fear is a universal emotion and a timeless one. But "Silence of the Lambs" is not merely a thrill show. It is also about two of the most memorable characters in movie history, Clarice Starling and Hannibal Lecter, and their strange, strained relationship ("people will say we're in love," Lecter cackles). They share so much. Both are ostracized by the worlds they want to inhabit--Lecter, by the human race because he is a serial killer and a cannibal, and Clarice, by the law enforcement profession because she is a woman. Both feel powerless--Lecter because he is locked in a maximum security prison (and bound and gagged like King Kong when he is moved), and Clarice because she is surrounded by men who tower over her and fondle her with their eyes. Both use their powers of persuasion to escape from their traps--Lecter is able to rid himself of the pest in the next cell by talking him into choking on his own tongue, and Clarice is able to persuade Lecter to aid her in the search for the serial killer named Buffalo Bill. And both share similar childhood wounds. Lecter is touched when he learns that Clarice lost both her parents at an early age, was shipped off to relatives, was essentially an unloved orphan. And Lecter himself was a victim of child abuse (on the DVD commentary track,Demme says he regrets not underlining this more). These parallel themes are mirrored by patterns in the visual strategy. Note that both Lecter in his prison cell and Buffalo Bill in his basement are arrived at by Starling after descending several flights of stairs and passing through several doors; they live in underworlds. Note the way the movie always seems to be looking at Clarice: The point-of-view camera takes the place of the scrutinizing men in her life, and when she enters dangerous spaces, it is there waiting for her instead of following her in. Note the consistent use of red, white and blue: not only in the FBI scenes, but also in the flag draped over the car in the storage shed, other flags in Bill's lair and even the graduation cake at the end (where the U.S. eagle in the frosting is a ghastly reminder of the way Lecter pinned a security guard spread-eagled to the walls of his cage). The movie's soundtrack also carries themes all the way through. There are exhalations and sighs at many points, as when the cocoon of the gypsy moth is taken from the throat of Bill's first victim. Much heavy breathing. There are subterranean rumblings and faraway cries and laments, almost too low to be heard, at critical points. There is the sound of a heart monitor. Howard Shore's mournful music sets a funereal tone. When the soundtrack wants to create terror, as when Clarice is in Bill's basement, it mixes her frightened panting with the sound of Bill's heavy breathing and the screams of the captive girl--and then adds the dog's frenzied barking, which psychologically works at a deeper level than everything else. Then it adds those green goggles so he can see her in the dark.Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins won Oscars for best actress and actor (the movie also won for best picture, for Demme's direction and Ted Talley's screenplay, and was nominated for editing and sound). It is remarkable that the Academy would remember, let alone single out, a film released 13 months before the Oscarcast; it usually votes for films that are still in theaters, or new on video. But "Silence" was so clearly one of a kind that it could not be ignored.Hopkins' performance has much less screen time than Foster's, but made an indelible impression on audiences. His "entrance" is unforgettable. After Clarice descends those stairs and passes through those doors and gates (which all squeak), the camera shows her POV as she first sees Lecter in his cell. He is so . . . still. Standing erect, at relaxed attention, in his prison jump suit, he looks like a waxwork of himself. On her next visit, he is erect, and then very slightly recoils, and then opens his mouth, and I at least was made to think of a cobra. His approach to Lecter's personality (Hopkins says on his commentary track) was inspired by HAL 9000 in "2001": He is a dispassionate, brilliant machine, superb at logic, deficient in emotions.Foster's Clarice is not only an orphan but a disadvantaged backwoods girl who has worked hard to get where she is, and has less self-confidence than she pretends. Noticing the nail polish on one of Bills' victims, she guesses that the girl is from "town," a word used only by someone who is not. Her bravest moment may come when she orders the gawking sheriff's deputies out of the room at the funeral home ("Listen here now!").One key to the film's appeal is that audiences like Hannibal Lecter. That's partly because he likes Starling, and we sense he would not hurt her. It's also because he is helping her search for Buffalo Bill, and save the imprisoned girl. But it may also be because Hopkins, in a still, sly way, brings such wit and style to the character. He may be a cannibal, but as a dinner party guest he would give value for money (if he didn't eat you). He does not bore, helikes to amuse, he has his standards, and he is the smartest person in the movie. He bears comparison, indeed, with such other movie monsters as Nosferatu, Frankenstein (especially in "Bride of Frankenstein"), King Kong and Norman Bates. Theyhave two things in common: They behave according to their natures, and they aremisunderstood. Nothing that these monsters do is "evil" in any conventional moral sense, because they lack any moral sense. They are hard-wired to do what they do. They have nochoice. In the areas where they do have choice, they try to do the right thing (Nosferatu is theexception in that he never has a choice). Kong wants to rescue Fay Wray, Norman Bateswants to make pleasant chit-chat and do his mother's bidding, and Dr. Lecter helps Claricebecause she does not insult his intelligence, and she arouses his affection. All of these qualities might not be enough to assure the longevity of "Silence" if it were not also truly frightening ("Hannibal" is not frightening, and for all of its box-office success itwill have a limited shelf life). "Silence" is frightening first in the buildup and introduction ofHannibal Lecter. Second in the discovery and extraction of the cocoon in the throat. Third inthe scene where the cops await the arrival of the elevator from the upper floors. Fourth in theintercutting between the exteriors of the wrong house in Calumet City and the interiors of theright one in Belvedere, Ohio. Fifth in the extended sequence inside Buffalo Bill's house, where Ted Levine creates a genuinely loathsome psychopath (notice the timing as Starlingsizes him up and reads the situation before she shouts "Freeze!"). We are frightened bothbecause of the film's clever manipulation of story and image, and for better reasons--we likeClarice, identify with her and fear for her. Just like Lecter. The Chinese Get the V ote, if Only for 'Super Girl'By JIM YARDLEYBEIJINGCHINA'S runaway summer hit, "Super Girl," ended last weekend with a television viewership that eclipsed the population of North America. State news media reported that more than 400 million people watched the finale of the show, an "American Idol" knockoff, and saw a frizzy-haired music student from Sichuan Province selected as the winner. But it was how that winner, Li Yuchun, was selected that has transformed "Super Girl" from just another evanescent offering on China's pop culture menu into a potentially lasting political marker.Unlike China's leader, Hu Jintao, Ms. Li was popularly elected. Fans voted via text message, and the three finalists drew more than eight million votes, a figure that would have been far higher except that people had to pay to vote. The enormous public fascination with the independently produced show has stimulated a nationwide online discussion on issues ranging from democracy to standards of beauty to whether Ms. Li is a lesbian. In a country where it is illegal to organize many types of public meetings, fans formed booster clubs and canvassed malls to court prospective voters. There were even accusations of voter fraud, as rabid fans circumvented the rule limiting each person to 15 votes."It's like a gigantic game that has swept so many people into a euphoria of voting, which is a testament to a society opening up," a social commentator, Zhu Dake, told state media. No one is saying that the frenzy surrounding the show represents a threat to the ruling Communist Party or foreshadows the emergence of meaningful elective politics in China. But the degree to which the show resonated with people seems to have unsettled the government's propaganda leaders. There is already speculation it will be canceled next year.Indeed, the show is significant not simply because people were allowed to vote for the winner but also because of the winner they voted for. Ms. Li, 21, is almost the antithesis of the assembly-line beauties regularly offered up on the government's China Central Television, or CCTV. Tall and gangly, with a thatch of frizzy hair, the adjectives most used to describe her in the media were "boyish" or "androgynous." Some commentators speculated that her fan base consisted of young girls who considered her to be their "boyfriend" because of her appearance."I have no such feelings," she told one interviewer. "That is their choice. I am an independent person."Wang Yao, 24, a graduate student in Beijing, watched the finals with a group of female friends. She knew the gossip about Ms. Li but was more impressed with her confidence and stage presence. She also thought Ms. Li would never have been able to win a similar contest on state television because of her unorthodox appearance and manner."This time it depended totally on text-message voting," Ms. Wang said. "That's why I think the results are totally different."The program was produced by a daring satellite television station in Hunan Province, in southern China, and sponsored by a dairy company. Hence, the full title of the show: "The Mongolian Cow Sour Yogurt Super Girl Contest." Several months ago, more than 120,000 contestants auditioned in five different cities in a week-after-week elimination process that grew in popularity as the field was whittled down.Unlike much programming that comes out of Beijing or Shanghai, "Super Girl" featured young women from the provinces. For many fans, it was the lack of polish of the performers, and the lack of predictability of the voting results, that made the program addictive. Ratings steadily grew until the final episode, which the state media said drew more viewers than the government's perennial blockbuster variety show at the beginning of each New Year celebration. The popularity of the show also made it a discussion point for intellectuals, with opinion。
