It was called“Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan”. The author John Loud Stephens had just returned from a long, difficult and dangerous journey through the thick rain forest of southern Mexico and Guatemala. He had once been there with Frederick Catherwood, an architect and artist, to search for the remains of a lost civilization known as the Mayas(玛雅).Very little was known about the Mayas at that time, but Catherwood’s drawing in the book showed incredible cities with temples, pyramids and other buildings as impressive as those of their northern neighbors, the Aztecs. These cities, however, were deserted. The inhabitants(居民)had disappeared almost a thousand years before.Since that time, far more has been learned about this remarkable civilization. The Mayas had a highly developed system of government and of agriculture, as well as an incredibly accurate system of measuring time. They were also wonderful engineers capable of moving huge blocks stone long distances and cutting them to accurate shapes and sizes. And yet although the Mayas knew about the wheel, they never used it. Neither did they use metals other than copper. What is ever more surprising is that they suddenly abandoned many of their cities and built new ones in the jungle. Some time around AD900, Mayan civilization collapsed. By the year 1200, their last great capital, Chichen Itza, was deserted.Who were these strange people and the even stranger gods they worshipped(崇拜)? What brought about their sudden andmysterious collapse? Some writers have tried to prove that the Mayas had contact with visitors from space and even that they themselves came from another planet. Some people believe that their civilization came to an end because the Mayas never developed a proper resistance to local germs and diseases. All we really know is that when the first Europeans appeared off their coast in 1517, this great and mysterious culture was only a memory.46.Stephen’s book astonished the world because .A.it was the first time people heard about MayasB.the Mayas were excellent builders and farmersC.he had experienced so may difficulties to find this lost civilizationD.it described that the Mayas used to be an advanced civilization47.One of the most surprising findings about Mayas was that .A.they developed accurate system measuring timeB.they knew how to build pyramids with stonesC.they deserted their cities and moved to new onesD.they built cities which they never lived in48.Mayas civilization collapsed probably in .A.a thousand years before 1841B.around AD 900C.any year between 1200 and 1517D.AD120049.What brought about Mayan sudden collapse?A.Tropical germs and diseasesB.European conquestC.Mysterious force from outer spaceD.No one knows for sureB篇The food we eat seems to have a great effect on our health. Although science has made big steps in making food more fit toeat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of human illness is related to food and forty percent of cancer is related to food as well. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, some researchers realized that things commonly used to keep colour in meats and other food additives(添加剂)caused cancer.Yet, these additives remain in our food, and it is difficult to know which things on the wrappings(包装)of foods are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to their animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of cows. Sometimes similar things are supplied to animals not for their health, but just to make a profit. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to get a higher price on the market. Although some countries have tried to control such things, the practice continues.50. According to this passage, we can know .A. perhaps most of human illness is caused by what we eatB. perhaps most kinds of cancer are related to what people eatC. cancer was discovered in 1945D. science has made food unfit to eat51. Things that are used to keep colours in meats are .A. harmfulB. uselessC. helplessD. dangerous52. All the additives .A. are bright and colourlessB. are not bright and colourfulC. have indirect effects on our healthD. have direct effects on our health53. People use additives .A. to make food more unfit to eatB. to improve the colour and taste of the foodC. to change colour of the foodD. to take off the diseases of the food54. Which of the following is not true?A. Some wrappings of food are harmful.B. Farmers try to make more money on the market by fattening their animals.C. “The practice continues” means “things are still going on like that”.D. We needn’t take care of what we eat.

When my 8-month-old cries, I ask him if he's hungry, or wet or just needs a hug.“Babububuu,” he says. What I need is a baby cry translator. That's just what a team of researchers say they've developed.“Experienced nurses or pediatricians (儿科医师) can identify why baby is crying because they have experience,”says Lichuan Liu, a professor of electrical engineering at Northern Illinois University, who conducted the research. “We talked to them, and they mentioned that based on the cry's sound there're some clues (线索).”So Liu set out to identify the features of cries that can help mark them as expressions of pain or discomfort. These features include differences in pitch (音高) and frequency. The team then developed an algorithm (算法) based on automatic speech recognition to detect and identify these features. This “cry language recognition algorithm” was trained on recordings of baby cries taken from a hospital. It uses compressed sensing, a process that reconstructs a signal based on incomplete data. It can identify a baby's cry against a background of, say, adult speech or loud television sounds. By classifying different cry features, like pitch, the algorithm can suggest whether the cry is due to sickness or pain, and identify the degree of urgency. The team had experienced pediatric care providers assess forty-eight baby cry recordings for probable cause of crying — hunger, tiredness, etc. They then compared these to the algorithm's assessments. The algorithm agreed with the humans 70% of the time. Generally, so-called “uncommon cry signals”— signs of pain or sickness — are high-pitched and very loud compared to ordinary crying.Liu and her team continue to train the technology for greater accuracy. They also plan to add more features, like the ability to identify and classify movement and facial expressions. This could help give a more detailed reading of baby's emotional (情感的) and physical state. They also hope to begin human trials in the near future.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。

人教版高考英语一轮复习选择性必修第4册UNIT4 SHARING练习含答案
UNIT 4SHARINGⅠ.阅读理解Miss Baugh taught seventh-grade social studies. She was the kind of teacher that perhaps everyone has had at least once:scary. In class, she always taught us to take school seriously. She had been teaching for a long time and I was as afraid of her as anyone, including the boys who were typically naughty in the back row.But I also had a life outside of school and had just discovered cheap objects for pranks. One such prop(道具) had two parts:an ink bottle painted to look as though it had overturned, and a piece of shiny black metal shaped like a pool.Of all the people I could have tricked, unexpectedly I chose Miss Baugh. At the beginning of the class,I opened her book and placed the props on one of the pages. Then I waited for the fun. When Miss Baugh saw the bottle and the spilled ink,she let out a little cry and looked for something to wipe up the ink with. The trick had succeeded beyond my expectations. But then I suddenly knew I had no control over what would happen next. When Miss Baugh tried to remove the ink with a paper towel, she discovered it was just a piece of black metal. She picked it up,her eyes sweeping the classroom with a deadly gaze. Then came the question:“Who did this?”After some hesitation,I raised my hand.Miss Baugh fixed me with a stare that terrified me,and my classmates. And then, most unexpectedly, she laughed.“Well,it certainly fooledme!” she said. She returned the props to me,and for a few seconds a sweet little aged lady appeared right where Miss Baugh stood. We got back to having a class. But something had changed for me.I began to realize that,if someone like Miss Baugh had a warm heart beneath that crusty surface, then other crusty people would probably do,too. That may have been the most valuable lesson I learned.1.Which words best describe Miss Baugh according to paragraph 1?A.Serious and experienced.B.Easy-going and selfless.C.Naughty and demanding.D.Scary and narrow-minded.2.What does the underlined word “pranks” probably mean in paragraph 2?A.Bets.B.Experiments.C.Tricks.D.Strategies.3.What can we learn from paragraph 4?A.Miss Baugh’s stare wasn’t as terrifying as before.B.The author was given away and finally raised his hand.C.Miss Baugh burst into laughter and gave the props back.D.A little aged lady entered the classroom to give a lecture.4.What valuable lesson did the author learn?A.Crusty people can be easily changed.B.Crusty people may be friendly to others.C.Crusty people are difficult to get along with.D.Crusty people are sensitive to others’ feelings.Ⅱ.七选五How to set up a Library of ThingsInstead of cluttering(乱堆放) our homes, garages and the planet, setting up a Library of Things allows neighbours to borrow and share huge, pricey goods.1 But instead of borrowing books, local people are borrowing drills, pasta makers and guitars for an affordable fee. Here’s how to start your own:Talk to your neighbours2 Do they feel their home is too cluttered?Do they want to do their bit for the environment and spend less money?Link into local networks and ask people to vote on a “wish list” of items they could borrow.Find a spaceStart small in someone’s garage or local market to see what items are most popular. Then find space in buildings in urban areas with high footfall such as libraries or community hubs.3Why start a Library of Things? We were living in a small house and needed some tools to put up shelves. We didn’t want to own the tools and hiring them was expensive!4 Inspired by tool libraries in the US and lending libraries in Berlin,we started a small Library of Things locally and seven years later we’re running five Library of Things locations across London. What other impact on the local area? We’ve run very successful events led by borrowers such habit and maintains correspondence with her favourite people. If you’ve been the receiver of her hand-decorated letters and envelopes, then I know they really make your day.A letter from Emerson is likely to include some art,a joke and enough questions to guarantee a response. But when she wrote a letter to Doug, she put something new in it.“You may know me as the person living here that writes lots of letters...You’re very important to me,helping me stay in touch with friends.I cheer people up with my letters, and you do that too!” Emerson wrote. The next day,a package arrived with two letters. One was from Doug and the otherfrom his superior,Sara, saying she had shared Emerson’s letter in the internal newsletter(内部通讯)of the USPS and believed many postal folks wanted to thank Emerson.Emerson was so pleased with the letter that it perturbed me much, for the possible result of no reply would come as a blow to her.Surprisingly, today,we saw Doug come with two boxes of letters from around the country. These letters were so human, filled with stories about family, pets and a sense of kindness. But there was something more in them.People felt seen—some for the first time in a long time.“I work alone in a small rural post office...”“Not many people think about how hard we work...”Emerson wrote back seriously.I’m sharing this not because I’m a proud dad,but because it’s relatively easy,if we take the time,to give others links they need to be good.We all want to be seen, known and loved.Send a letter.Give a call.Take a step of bravery, like Emerson.4.Why did Emerson write Doug a letter?A.To make friends with him.B.To express her appreciation.C.To cheer him up.D.To share her daily life.5.What does the underlined word“perturbed”in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A.Touched.B.Astonished.C.Delighted.D.Concerned.6.Which of the following words can best describe Emerson?A.Courageous and generous.B.Energetic and ambitious.C.Caring and grateful.D.Capable and humourous.7.What’s the main idea of the passage?A.People should connect with others actively.B.People should care more about mail carriers.C.People should face challenges with bravery.D.People should show kindness to other people.Anyone wanting to help the poor may like this idea—recycling aluminum cans in a different way, which is apparently also good for the environment. So you’re actually killing two birds with one stone. It goes without saying that recycling aluminum cans can save resources, energy, time and money.People usually save and place aluminum cans in the dustbins, which are then collected and taken away by cleaners, who will finally recycle them in the recycling centre. But if you save the aluminum cans, and skip the cleaners, you can save these same cans for something more important—helping the poor.In other words,by doing this, you are giving the environmental cause some new significance. Here is how to put this idea into action.Take your aluminum cans and place them in a plastic bag.For the dirty ones, rinse them out first.Store the bag of clean aluminum cans.Once you collect about one hundred cans or more, take the cans to the recycle centre yourself. There are about eighteen aluminum cans in a pound. And you can receive three to four dollars for one hundred cans.Donate your three to four dollars to the poor or any charity organization of your choice.By now,you may wonder if your few dollars have really made a difference to the poor.Consider this:Is there any individual or any specific event that is great enough to change the world or decide the direction that history takes? The answer is probably no.What if there were a lot of people who would do the same thing?History shows nothing but the collective will of the whole community. And that will surely be powerful enough to make a bigger difference.Go to your community or your school and spread your idea.Share your idea and save your aluminum cans with other people. One hundred people can speak louder than one.And the money you make by saving cans can be multiplied by one hundred times. And if more people join in the cause around the world,an even larger difference can be made, and more people in need will enjoy the benefits.8.What’s special about the new idea?A.It makes profits.B.It saves resources.C.It benefits the poor.D.It involves cleaners.9.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?A.Dirty cans do not sell well.B.You decide who receives the money.C.A hundred cans weigh about 3 pounds.D.The recycle centre is conveniently located.10.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 probably refer to?A.A great individual or event.B.The direction history takes.C.The collective will of people.D.The neighbourhood you live in.11.Which of the following does the writer want to tell us?A.Many hands make light work.B.Kill two birds with one stone.C.Don’t put the cart before the horse.D.No man can do two things at once.Ⅱ.七选五(2024·四川九市联考)The Oxford Dictionary describes staycation as “a holiday spent in one’s home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions.” __1__It gives you almost 100% of restful time with little to no prep.Stop to consider the following: the ratio (比例) of quality time that’s spent on relaxation is more important than the number of days for holidays.__2__ For instance, a weekend break that consists of long travel on either side is no recipe (良方) for relaxation. This is one of the reasons why staycations are more refreshing than vacations.__3__ Instead of losing time and energy preparing for a vacation, a staycation will provide you with high-quality resting time. You’ll get back to work feeling more refreshed, and relaxed.__4__ Staycations also tick some of the same boxes as vacations like experiencing new things. You just need to explore nearby things which you have never paid attention to.Often we overlook the attractions that are near to us.__5__ However, if you make an effort to explore the area close to where you live, you may be pleasantly surprised. There will be cafes and restaurants you’ve never tried, historic buildings you’ve never seen before, and nature parks you’ve never visited. So with a little effort on your part, you’ll be able to experience new and exciting things close to home.A.They act as real breaks from work and life pressure.B.If you give this some thought, you’ll realize that it’s true.C.A vacation can leave you more tired than before your trip.D.In addition, it can offer you fresh experiences immediately.E.Let’s take a look at the great things about taking a staycation.F.Staycations don’t mean long traveling, which costs you a lot less.G.We often choose to spend big amounts of money visiting foreign countries.选择性必修第四册UNIT 4Ⅰ.【语篇解读】本文是应用文。

答案:Body language is a way of communication. However, people from different cultures may misunderstand the gestures they use. For example, when we nod at somebody we mean we agree with his
opinion. But in some countries nodding one's head means disagreement. We generally think looking at somebody in the eye shows that we are listening to him attentively, while in some districts, it is rude. People may have different body language even if they live in the same country. Therefore it is very important for you to have a good understanding of the body language there if you are in a foreign country.。
