课后阅读训练十七Unit 5Period 1Ⅰ. 阅读理解ADuke Ellington(1899—1974)may be America’s greatestcomposer. He led an orchestra, played the piano and composedover 2, 000 pieces of music.Duke began his life as Edward Kennedy Ellington in Washington, D. C. He was nicknamed by a classmate who admired him. This nickname was proper for Duke because of his elegant and proud manners. Even as a child, Duke had fans.Duke’s parents got him in piano lessons when he was in primary school. Duke was very afraid of his lessons and preferred to play baseball instead. He grew bored with practising and gave up his lessons. Duke didn’t become interested in learning the piano again until he was a teenager.Duke often joked that he learned to play the piano to attract girls. While washing dishes for his summer job, Duke met a waiter who invited him to go and see ragtime(an early form of jazz)pianist, Harvey Brooks. Brooks played ragtime in a way that did not follow the rules of classical piano music—he had freedom to change the rules and express himself more freely. Duke discovered that he wanted to make his own music tooand then he taught himself how to play the piano like Harvey Brooks. He practised until his fingers could fly and even arranged melodies as he played.Soon Duke began playing for his high school dances. When he was 19, he started playing at parties and dance halls.Duke then moved to New York. There he played in different jazz clubs, saloons and dance halls. Soon he was leading his own band, the Washingtonians at the Kentucky Club, located in Times Square. In 1927, after giving a performance at the Cotton Club, he began to produce sophisticated(高水平的)arrangements of his own. He toured the world with his orchestra and composed thousands of songs. Duke led his orchestra until his death.【语篇概述】本文主要讲的是美国著名作曲家Duke Ellington(艾灵顿公爵)的生平。

BWhen my brother and I were children, we spent a few weeks each summer in the countryside with our uncle. He was a geologist and loved to go on long walks to find stones to add to his collection at the university. More often than not, we followed him.One day, we left early, and this time, our uncle had bought us backpacks. “You can help me carry the samples, ”he explained.Sure, why not? The whole day, we walked around the countryside, and every now and then, our uncle put stones in our bags. We were a bit surprised that he also took some stones out from our bags at times, but figured he had just found better samples than the ones we already had.Still, when we reached the house in the late afternoon, we were exhausted. The backpacks were so heavy that we gave a big sigh of relief when we put them on the ground. Yet our uncle’s backpack was half-empty.“Why did you give us so many stones? ”we asked.“I didn’t. You did, ”he said, waiting for a while before continuing. “You did not know it, but I made you go through a little attitude test today. ”“What do you mean an‘attitude test’? ”we wanted to know.“It is something someone once did to me—and I shall always remember it. You see, I listened to every word you said. And whenever you complained about anyone or anything, I added a stone to your bags. And whenever you talked about something with an attitude of gratitude and positive thinking, I took out a stone. And now look at your backpacks. ”We did. They were full.“I hope you rememb er this little attitude test. You see, your negative thoughts are like stones. You carry them in your mind just like those stones in a backpack. The more negative thoughts you have, the heavier your mind is. A positive thought, however, cancels out anegative one. So look at those bags and start paying attention to what you say and how you say things. ”This little lesson was one of the most important I ever had. And I remember my uncle with great love for teaching us one of the most important lessons in life—the power of attitude.【语篇概述】本文是记叙文。

人教版高中英语选修六课后阅读训练5.【Unit2Period1】及答案解析Ⅰ.阅读理解APoetry is one of the important art forms of literature, and is an easy way to express your feelings. Moreover, everyone understands it in their own way. Some find relief in poems;some read them simply for peace;some read poems for simple artistic pleasure. There are some special features of poetry, which make it quite different from other forms of literature.First of all, poems have rhythmic patterns.Generally most parts of a poem follow the same form of rhythm.Poems may have rhyme, but they don’t have to.The lines are neatly arranged together so that they express a particular feeling or emotion. There can be various types of poems but according to the pattern or the form, there are mainly three types:Lyrics(抒情诗):The lyric mainly concentrates on human thoughts and emotions rather than a story.Lyrics always bear song-like appeal. These are mainly short poems.Popular lyric poem forms are the elegy(挽歌),theode(颂歌)and the sonnet(十四行诗).William Shakespeare,Edmund Waller and Keats are some of the greatest lyric writers of all times.Narrative poems:This type of poetry tells a story.Narrative poems are usually long poems.Epics(史诗)and ballads fall under this type. Some of the greatest epic poets are John Milton,Dante,Edgar Allan Poe,Alexander Pope, William Shakespeare, etc.Dramatic poems:Any drama that is written in verse is a dramatic poem. These poems generally tell a story. Black verse, dramatic monologues and closet drama belong to this type.William Shakespeare,Christopher Marlowe and Ben Jonson are some of the great dramatic poets.Whatever the form is,one thing, which cannot be denied,is that poetry is one of the most powerful tools to express our feelings.【语篇概述】本文主要讲了诗歌的一些特点以及诗歌的几个类别。

"Allowing a more sensible use of air conditioning brings about electricity savings and protects the environment."It called on all public and private offices to let employees wear no tie during heat waves like the one that has brought Africa-like temperatures to many parts of Italy this week. The move echoes (回应) a similar action from Italy’s biggest oil group, ENI, which told its staff earlier this month they need not wear a tie at work. The tie makers, however, were left hot under the collar."Italy confirms that it is a strange country,"Flavio Cima said angrily in a letter to financial daily Il Sole 24 ORE under the headline: "I, tie maker, am responsible for global warming.""We can now happily continue with our lifestyle, using cars, consuming fuel, heating and cooling our homes at leisure. The highest number ever seen in one year is 445, in 2008."We only need four more to break our record,"said Lee Evans, who runs the British Birding Association. "With three months to go, I’m sure we’ll do it."Last month an extremely rare Siberian Rubythroat bird was seen in Scotland, sending hundreds of birdwatchers north in the hope of catching a glimpse of this colourful Asian beauty. Another very uncommon bird, the bufflehead duck was cited in Cornwell and caused similar excitement. "I couldn’t believe it,"said Evans. "The poor thing was completely knackered. It must have been blown to England by the storms while trying to fly from Canada to the southern United States for the winter. That’s 3000 miles!"Evans said that global warming over the past decade was playing a key role in transforming bird movements across the world. In addition, melting Arctic sea ice may also be opening up bird flight paths over the North Pole, making it easier for birds from the Pacific—such as the slaty-backed gull and tufted puffin, both of which appeared in London earlier this year—to reach Britain.Bird-watching is becoming an increasingly popular hobby among all age groups, added Evans. "A fifth of our members are under 18. This is a round-the-year hobby that you can enjoy from the kitchen window or from a car. More and more people are bird-watching, and as a result, more and more unexpected species are being spotted in the British Isles."zx&xk8.What is the passage mainly about?A. An increase in the number of birdwatchers.B.A growth in the number of native species.C. Storms due to global warming.D. The melting Arctic ice cap.DWhere should an adventurous tourist go? After you’ve done sightseeing in London, shopping in New York, enjoyed the local food in Paris, and danced to your heart’s content at the Brazilian carnival, where else can you go? What attractive tourist destination awaits you?Well, Antarctica sounds like the holiday of a lifetime! It's considered the last great wilderness on Earth. Just a few scientists in research stations share the icy landscape with penguins and other animals which can struggle with the low temperatures.Tourism began in Antarctica in the 1950s and it's still small part. About 37,000 tourists are expected there this season, but many won't even leave the boat. The BBC’s Juliet Rix visited the frozen continent and asked herself if she should be there at all, causing potential problems to such a sensitive environment. Her tour guide admitted that all visitors leave a footprint and they all go to the same places, the accessible coastline, which is also where the penguins and seals go to raise. But some people believe that if carefully controlled, tourism can be good for Antarctica. It has no native population and it needs advocates. Visitors to the icy continent might be ready to support and even to fund its preservation. And they're likely to engage in the discussion about global warming, which has led to the melting of glaciers.According to Rix, guidelines are followed when you’re about to set foot in Antarctica and tourists have to disinfect(消毒)their boots to make sure no alien species are introduced. And once on land, there's no eating or smoking. Rocks, bone fragments—nothing should be taken as a souvenir and nothing should be left behind.Tourists fortunate enough to visit the Antarctic must be aware that this is not their home and keep their fingers crossed that future generations will also be able to enjoy such breathtaking views.12.Who lives in Antarctica?A.37,000 tourists.B. The BBC's Juliet Rix.C.A few scientists and animals.D. People in London and Paris.13.Why can tourism be good for Antarctica?A. People can bring some animals into it.B. People may take interest in the protection of it.C. People can give advice to the native population.D. People will go to the coastline to play with the seals.14.What are the guidelines when you go on the shore?A. You can leave rubbish on the shore.B. You can smoke and eat on the shore.C. You can take something as souvenirs.D. You can help to protect the environment.15.What is the author’s attitude towards the tourists going to Antarctica?A. Positive.B. Ambiguous.C. Subjective.D. Negative.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
选修6unit5阅读练习
自助餐Reading ComprehensionA 篇What will city life be like in the future? Some people think that life in the cities is going to be horrible. They say that cities will become more and more crowded. As the number of people increases, there will be less space for each person. This overcrowding will cause other problems —more crime, dirtier streets , and worse problems with traffic than we have now. How will people find enough drinking water, energy (such as gas and electricity ), and housing? Because life will be hard, people who live in cities will worry more, and they may become sick. For these reasons, some say that nobody will want to live in city areas. How can we deal with such problems as overcrowding, crime, and traffic? In some cities, thousands of people are already sleeping in the streets because there is little suitable housing —and because houses are too expensive. The crime rate isn’t going down. Instead, it is increasing so fast that many people are afraid to go out at night. Traffic is also getting worse. More and more often, traffic jams are so bad that cars don’t move at all for several streets. These problems have been getting worse, not better, so many people see no hope for the future of the city.Los Angeles, California, for example, has no subway system and buses are slow. Instead, many commuters (乘、开车上班族) drive many miles from their homes to work. Many of these drivers spend several hours each day on busy freeways. New Y ork, however, has a big transit system —buses, commuter trains, and subways. Because the public transportation is crowdedand dirty, many people drive private cars, and the traffic jams are worse than that in Los Angeles. A taxi driver complains, “I was driving home, but in forty-five minutes I moved only two miles! Finally, I turned off the engine and just sat there. A lot of people left their cars where they were in the middle of the street and went into a bar for a few beers!”On the other hand, some cities have clean, fast and pleasant public transportation systems. In Paris, France, and Toronto, Canada, for example, anyone can use buses or subways to move quickly from one part of the city to another.1. What do some people think is the main problem of the future city like?A. Poor housing.B. Overcrowding.C. Environmental pollution.D. Traffic jams.2. The best way to work out the traffic problem in Los Angels might be _________________.A. cutting down the number of private carsB. providing more buses in the freewayC. building a subway systemD. persuading people to live nearer to their workplaces3. Which of the following sentences is NOT TRUE?A. Thousands of people are already sleeping in the streets.B. The crime rate is n’t going down.C. The traffic jams are so bad that cars don’t move at all for severalstreets.D. Many people have a positive attitude towards the future of the city.B篇One day a lady saw a mouse running across her kitchen floor. Let us examine some of the expressions that use “hand”.We will get a hand in this way. “To get a hand in” is to begin a job, to begin to know something about it. When we learn completely, we will be able to do it hands down. If we do the job well, we may end up with the upper hand. On the other hand, if the situation gets out of hand, it is out of control. We must consider another way of expressing phrase---- to hand it to someone. For example, I must hand it to you for understanding what we have discussed this far. Y ou can also lend a hand to someone but without really giving up your hand. Y ou lend a hand when you help someone. If someone is kind enough to lend us a hand then we surely do not want to bite the hand that feeds us. We do not want to repay his kindness by treating him badly. Now, we have a free hand to continue examining other “hand” expressions. It means you are free to act without getting permission from someone else. Maybe you can find a friend who wants to take a hand in our project. It would have to be someone who was interested in these expressions. Y our friend may want to work hand in glove with us. That is good because that means he wants to work as closely with us as a glove covers the hand. Of course, there is a danger that he may look at our project and decide to take it in hand. That means he wants to tale it over. If that happens, we may throw up our hands because the situation seams hopeless. In fact, we may decide that it is time for us to end this project to wash our hands of “ hand” expressions.11.We are ready to do a certain job, we may say; Let’s ______________.A. get out of handB. get a hand inC. lend a handD. take a hand in12.Which of the following has an unpleasant meaning?A. Hands downB. bite the hand that feeds usC. take a hand inD. hand in glove13.Something is so easy to do. So you can do it____________.A. hands downB. on the other handC. the upper handD. hand in glove14.What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?A. To tell us the fact that there are many phrases with “hands”.B. To prove the importance of the word “ hand ”.C. To tell us some phrases with “ hand ”.D. To make us laugh.E(2010·辽宁高考)I hated dinner parties. But I decided to give them another shot because I'm in London. And my friend Mallery invited me.And because dinner parties in London are very different from those back in New Y ork. There,“I'm having a dinner party”means:“I'm booking a table for 12 at a restaurant you can't afford and we'll be sharing the cheque evenly,no matter what you eat.”Worse,in Manhattan there is always someone who leaves before the bill arrives. They'll throw down cash, half of what they owe,and then people like me,who don't drink, end up paying even more. But if I try to use the same trick, the hostess will shout:“Where are you going?”And it's not like I can say I have somewhere to go:everyone knows I have nowhere to go.But in London, dinner parties are in people's homes. Not only that, the guests are an interesting mix.The last time I went to one,the guests were from France,India,Denmark and Nigeria;it was like a gathering at the United Nations. In New Y ork,the mix is less striking. It's like a gathering at Bloomingdale's,a well-known department store. For New Y orkers, talking about other parts of the world means Brooklyn and Queens in New Y ork.But at Mallery's,when I said that I had been to Myanmar recently, people knew where it was.In New Y ork people would think it was a usual new club.15.What does the word“shot”in Paragraph 1 probably mean? Sixteen-year-old Daniel McGinnis took a simple fishing trip on the island in 1795. Upon exploring a wooded part of the island, he came across a tree with markings which led to him finding a thirteen feet wide depression (下陷) in the ground. Thoughts of buried pirate treasure inspired him to dig and see what was causing this. After gathering his friends John Smith and Anthony Vaughan, they dug only two feet into the ground before reaching flagstones (石板). Once these stones were removed, the boys continued to dig only to find logs at the ten and twenty-five feet level. At this point they knew they could not dig any farther without more help.Years passed as the boys likely searched for some financial assistance and digging help. In 1803, with the backing of Simeon Lynds, another excavation was attempted. This time there were various oak platforms, putty, coconut fiber mats, stones and charcoal they kept encountering every ten feet and eventually they reached a flat stone that was inscribed with strange letters and markings. This stone later was translated to read “Forty Feet Below Two Million Pounds Are Buried〞,but at the time was just quickly removed only to find more wood below. After this discovery two days passed and upon returning to the pit they found it had flooded with seawater. All attempts to remove the water failed. Many theories still exist on who created the pit and what may be at the bottom. Some say it may have been built by pirates, but to create a dry dock and not hide treasure. Many would like to claim aliens landed and created this pit for something from their world. One last theory is that it is simply a natural sinkhole and that through years of various objects sinking it could appear that there were “platforms〞of trees and such.语篇解读:本文主要介绍了加拿大橡树岛上的天坑所引发的寻宝热。

Unit 5 Period 1Ⅰ. 阅读理解AHospitals employ many therapeutic (治疗的) methods, such asmedication (药物), massage (按摩) therapy and music therapy. Andmusic therapy is growing in popularity.Sandra Siedliecki is a Senior Scientist at the NursingInstitute of Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. She says music is a low-costtreatment. And she says scientists have done a lot of research on music’s effect on pain. Dr. Marian Good did a lot of studies looking at surgery (外科) patients and the use of music. In her studies, patients just listened to relaxing music. Dr. Good found that her surgery patients took fewer painkillers after they listened to music. Music had a good effect on short-term pain. However, chronic pain, the kind that recurs (复发) continually, changed a little under the effect of music.Dr. Linda Chlan was studying something different. She was not interested in patients’ pain, but instead, their anxiety. She spent a lot of time with people who were in the hospital because their anxiety was so great that the y couldn’t breathe. People with this condition often have to use breathing machines. Dr. Chlan said that the machines sometimes did little to improve their condition. Sometimes they even made things worse. The patients would become more anxious. Dr. Chlan let nurses tell patients that music was a good choice to make them feel better. They also placed signs near the patients’ beds — Listen to your music at least twice a day. The people who listened to music had a reduction (减少) in the amount of medication they received. In addition, their anxiety reduced by about 36 percent. Both doctors had similar explanations for why music was so helpful. Music can be a very powerful distractor (使分心的事物) in the brain when we’re listening to music that is pleasing and then it interrupts stressful thoughts.【语篇概述】音乐疗法在许多医院越来越流行。
