Special offers at a shopping center.BIn a world full of Kates and Sarahs, you might think it'd be nice to have a unique name to help me stand out in a crowd.Being named Stacia(pronounced stay-sha)is not so lucky to me.I'll get the occasional "Your name is so pretty" after introducing myself, but eventually my name causes me more frustration than happiness. For example,Microsoft Word always tries to tell me my name isn't a real word.I couldn't even pronounce my own name correctly until I was five.I once had a professor who pronounced my name differently each class. After a while I stopped correcting him,and that's been my reaction to strangers ever since. In other cases,I'd rather tell the seller my name is Staci and save both of us,as well as the people standing behind me in line, valuable time.Meeting new people gives me anxiety, and I've realized it's easier just to lie about my name altogether in certain cases.Actually I did -- so many times that Brittany is now my chosen "going out" name.It may have caused some confusion for my friends at first, who would let out a small laugh or have a confused look, but I've trained them to keep a straight face whenever I whip out this fake(假的)name. Now going out on weekends means I get to have a shift of identity.Frustrations aside, being the owner of a unique name has made me appreciate the little things in life.Someone pronouncing or spelling my name correctly on the first try brings me more joy than it probably should.I also love it when I meet another Stacia and we get to bond over our shared struggles. To any other Stacias reading this - I feel you,girl.P.S.I apologize to any real Brittanys out there. Thanks for letting me borrow your name.4.How does the author often feel about her name?______A. Happy.B. Frustrated.C. Foolish.D. Proud.5.Why does the author use a fake name?______A. To enjoy a different name.B. To stand out in a crowd.C. To save time and trouble.D. To make a fool of herself.6.What's the reaction of her friends to "Brittany" finally?______A. They are used to it.B. They are laughing at her.C. They are confused about it.D. They are strongly against her.7.How does the author sound when telling the story?______A. Humorous.B. Nervous.C. Curious.D. Guilty.CClothes can make phone calls, play music, dial your pal's number, keep you warm during cold weather and operate your computer? This is not a fantasy.A British company, called Electrotextiles, has created a wide range of clothes - clothes that have minds of their own! Scientists, working for the company, have invented a kind of cloth that can be mixed with flexible(有弹性的)electronic materials to create intelligent clothing. The results are electronic garments(衣服).If you think the wearer has to be wired to different devices, think again. These designer clothes are wire-free,soft to touch and washable!! Like any electronic device,thesehigh-tech clothes have to be powered.Currently,a tiny nine-volt battery serves the purpose .But the researchers hope that in the near future the clothes will produce electricity by using body heat. These clothes are 100 percent shock proof, they say.The Electrotextiles team has also created the world's first cloth keyboard. This keyboard canbe sewn into your trousers or skirt. To use this device, you will have to sit down and tap on your lap! These 'lap-tap' gadgets(器具).are all set to take over laptop computers! Another useful garment is the shirt-cum-mobile phone. This handy invention enables drivers to chat comfortably with others at the wheel! Other popular electronic wear include the denim (牛仔布)jacket with flexible earphones sewn into the hood and the electronic ski jacket with a built-in heater. The ski jacket is also programmed to send signals to a satellite. This technology is known as global positioning system and can be used to track lost skiers and wandering kids.Having completed the cloth keyboard, scientists have already started to work on a new project - a necktie that can be used as a computer mouse. What is the next?Do you have any idea?8.The electronic garments are similar to other electronic devices in that ______ .A. they feel smooth and softB. they use electricity as powerC. they can be washed in waterD. they are made from flexible materials9.How will researchers improve these high-tech clothes?______A. Body heat will be used as power.B. The wearer will not get shocked.C. A tiny nine-volt battery will work.D. They will get charged automatically.10.What does the underlined phrase "This handy invention" in Paragraph 5 refer to?______A. The laptop computer.B. The electronic ski jacket.C. The shirt-cum-mobile phone.D. The world's first cloth keyboard.11.The main purpose of the text is ______ .A. to advertise for an English companyB. to predict the future trend of scienceC. to show how rapidly science developsD. to introduce some intelligent clothingDIn colleges around the country, most students are also workers. The reality of college can be pretty different from the images presented in movies and television.Instead of the students who wake up late, party all the time, and study only before exams, many colleges are full of students with pressing schedules of not just classes and activities, but real jobs, too. This isn't a temporary phenomenon. The share of working students has been on the rise since the 1970s,and one-fifth of students work year round.About one-quarter of those who work while attending school have both a full-course load and a full-time job.The arrangement can help pay for tuition(学费)and living costs, obviously. And there's value in it beyond the direct cause:such jobs can also be critical for developing important professional and social skills that make it easier to land a job after graduation. With many employers looking for students with already-developed skill sets,on-the-job training while in college can be the best way to ensure a job later on.But it's not all upside.Even full-time work may not completely cover the cost of tuition andliving expenses. The study notes that if a student worked a full-time job at the federal minimum wage, they would earn just over ﹩15,000 each year, certainly not enough to pay for tuition, room, and board at many colleges without some serious financial aid. That means that though they're sacrificing time away from the classroom, many working students will still graduate with at least some debt. And working full time can reduce the chance that students will graduate at all,by cutting into the time available for studying and attending classes. There is little reward for attending but not finishing college.Students who wind up leaving school because of difficulty in managing work and class are likely to find themselves stuck in some of the same jobs they might have gotten if they hadn't gone at all.The difficulty of working too much while in school can create a cycle that pushes students further into debt without receiving any of the financial or career benefits.12.According to the passage, the reality of college students is that ______ .A. they throw parties a lotB. they stay up late every nightC. they pay no attention to examsD. they work besides attending classes13.What does the underlined word "land" in Para.3 probably mean?______A. keepB. quitC. getD. lose14.We can learn from the passage that ______ .A. working students are more likely to finish collegeB. students can cover their college expenses through workingC. students receive a huge reward for managing work and classD. dropping out of college may not help students get career benefits15.What is the best title for the passage?______A. The Difficulties of Landing a JobB. The Struggle of Work-School BalanceC. The Reward of Working While StudyingD. The Images of Working College Students二、完形填空(本大题共20小题,共30.0分)Learning to Accept I learned how to accept life as it is from my father.(16),he did not teach me acceptance when he was strong and healthy, but rather when he was (17) and ill.My father was (18) a strong man who loved being active, but a terrible illness (19) all that away. Now he can no longer walk, and he must sit quietly in a chair all day.Even talking is (20).One night,I went to visit him with my sisters. We started (21) about life, and I told them about one of my (22).I said that we must very often give things up (23) we grow - our youth, our beauty, our friends - but it always (24) that after we give something up,we gain something new in its place. Then suddenly my father (25) up.He said,"But,Peter,I gave up (26)! His face is almost the international symbol for genius. But we want to go beyond one man and explore the nature of genius itself. Why is it that some people are so much more intelligent or creative than the rest of us? And who are they?In the sciences and arts, those praised as geniuses were most often white men, of European origin. Perhaps this is not a surprise. It's said that history is written by the victors, and those victors set the standards for admission to the genius club. When contributions were made by geniuses outside the club—women, or people of a different color1 or belief—they were unacknowledged and rejected by others.A study recently published bySciencefound that as young as age six, girls are less likely than boys to say that members of their gender(性别)are “really, really smart.” Even worse, the study found thatgirls act on that belief: Around age six they start to avoid activities said to be for children who are “really, really smart.” Can our planet afford to have any great thinkers become discouraged and give up? It doesn't take a genius to know the answer: ly not. Here's the good news. In a wired world with constant global communication, we're all positioned to see flashes of genius wherever they appear. And the more we look, the more we will see that social factors(因素)like gender, race, and class do not determine the appearance of genius. As a writer says, future geniuses come from those with “intelligence, creativity, perseverance(毅力), and simple good fortune, who are able to change the world.”4. What does the author think of victors' standards for joining the genius club?A. They're unfair.B. They're conservative.C. They're objective.D. They're strict.5. What can we infer about girls from the study inScience?A. They think themselves smart.B. They look up to great thinkers.C. They see gender differences earlier than boys.D. They are likely to be influenced by social beliefs6. Why are more geniuses known to the public?A. Improved global communication.B. Less discrimination against women.C. Acceptance of victors' concepts.D. Changes in people's social positions.7. What is the best title for the text?A. Geniuses Think AlikeB. Genius Takes Many FormsC. Genius and IntelligenceD. Genius and LuckCSalad plants have already been grown in old sheltersand tunnels. Urban farming is a regular topic of interest at places like the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, where leaders consider whether the world's food system, blamed for causing both obesity and malnutrition, can be fixed. There are already plenty of urban farming projects around the world, particularly in the US, Japan and the Netherlands, from urban fish and plant farms to vertical farming.“It's becoming an expanding industry,” said Richard Ballard, one of the founders of the farm Growing Underground. “There're several other businesses starting up in London in containers, and there are other vertical farms around the country now.”Growing Underground is not a standard farm. The rows of crops could be in almost any tunnel, but these plants are 100 feet below Clapham High Street and show that urban agriculture is, in some cases at least, nota fad. The underground farm has occupied a part of the Second World War air-raid shelters for nearly five years, and Ballard is planning to expand into the rest of the space later this year.Growing Underground supplies herb and salad mixes to grocery shops, supermarkets and restaurants. Being in London creates an advantage, Ballard says, as they can harvest and deliver in an hour.He adds other advantages. Being underground means temperatures never go below 15℃surface greenhouses need to be heated. They can do more harvests: 60 crops a year, compared with about seven in a traditional farm. Electricity to power the lights is a major cost, but the company believes renewable energy will become cheaper.Similar British companies include the Jones Food Company in Lincolnshire, while in the US AeroFarms has several projects in New Jersey, and Edenworks in Brooklyn.8. A newly-published review of decades of kindness research provides some answers. In this paper, researchers analyzed the results from 126 research articles looking at almost 200, 000 participants from around the world. The studies they chose measured well-being in various ways, including both mental and physical health. Some were experiments, where people did a kindness practice to observe its effects, while others just surveyed people about how kind and happy they were.As expected, people who were kind tended to have higher well-being. Lead researcher Bryant Hui wasastoundedthat the relationship wasn't stronger than it was, but he was still encouraged by the results. One thing Hui and his colleagues found was that people who performed random, informal acts of kindness, like bringing a meal to a sad friend, tended to be happier than people who performed more formal acts of kindness, like volunteering in a soup kitchen. The researchers also found that people who were kind tended to be higher in "eudaimonic happiness"(a sense of meaning and purpose in life) more than "hedonic happiness"(a sense of pleasure and comfort). Perhaps this makes sense, given that being kind takes effort, which reduces comfort but could make people feel better about themselves and their abilities, which would provide a sense of meaning.Being kind came with greater eudaimonic happiness for women than for men, too. According to Hui, this could be because, in many cultures, women are expected to be kinder than men; so, they may have more to gain from it. And younger participants experienced more happiness when they were kind than older participants, perhaps for developmental reasons, he says.Hui isn't sure why acting kind might have these different effects on different groups, but he points to theories put forth by researcher Elizabeth Midlarsky: Being kind may make us feel better about ourselves as a person or about the meaning of our lives, help us forget our own troubles and stresses, or help us be more socially-connected with others.12.
