In less than 30 minutes, we had arrived in my beloved Tianjin.The first stop was the iconic Tianjin Eye, which is one of the largest ferris wheels in the world. Michael and I rode all the way to the top and got an incredible view of the whole city skyline. He took about a million pictures!Next, we visited one of Tianjin's most famous attractions - the Ancient Culture Street. This pedestrian shopping area is lined with traditional Chinese buildings and stores selling all kinds of neat souvenirs and snacks. I showed Michael how to bargain with the vendors to get good deals on some small jade sculptures and silky cheongsam dresses for his sisters back home.We had to stop for lunch at one of the many delicious jianbing stands. Jianbing is my absolute favorite Tianjin street food - it's kind of like a crepe or burrito stuffed with eggs, crispy wontons, scallions, sauces and lots of other yummy fillings. Michael loved it and said it was unlike anything he'd ever tasted before!In the afternoon, we wandered around the beautiful Baroque-style buildings that make up the Italian-Style Town neighborhood. I explained how this area used to be consulates and embassies for European countries in the early 1900s. We pretended to be sophisticated aristocrats strolling along the lovely gardens and canals.For dinner, I knew we had to take Michael for the quintessential Tianjin meal - a hot pot full of fragrant lamb and fresh vegetables that we cooked right at our table. We stuffed ourselves silly on lamb dumplings, noodles, pancakes and all theother delicious sides. Michael said it was one of the best meals of his life!The next day, we explored Huanghuan Scenic Area, which has replicas of all the must-see sights from around China like the Forbidden City, Terracotta Warriors and Leshan Buddha statue. Michael and I had a contest to see who could take the most ridiculous selfies in front of all the famous backdrops.Then it was time for my favorite part - visiting the Tianjin Water Park! This massive water park has tons of thrilling slides, a huge wave pool, lazy river and other fun rides. We went on everything and got absolutely soaked from head to toe, but it was a blazing hot summer day so we didn't mind at all. We even tried riding the exhilarating tubing slides where you spin around crazy fast before splashing into the pool at the bottom!After the water park, we were starving so we stopped for a big Tianjin snack feast with all the classics - guobacai (sweet and sour shredded pancakes), maahumaar (fried dough rings), and jarugezi (fried pork ribs). Eating all those decadent local snacks was probably my favorite part of showing Michael around Tianjin!On our final day together, we visited the Qing Dynasty Nankan Residence which was the home of a powerfulgovernment official during imperial times. The traditional courtyard houses and gardens were so peaceful and elegant. I tried explaining some of the symbology behind the architecture to Michael, like how the layout and carvings incorporated ideas about harmony, longevity, and spiritual balance.Before we knew it, our amazing Tianjin adventure was over and it was time for Michael to head back to Canada. We made him try one last Tianjin speciality - the stretchy, chewy snack called yanhualingren or "smoke chips" before saying our goodbyes.I was so happy I got to show my friend around my vibrant, delicious, and culturally rich hometown. Tianjin has so many cool historical sites, fun activities, and scrumptious foods. I know Michael had an incredible time experiencing it all and can't wait to come back again someday.
