此考试对专业、年龄、学历没有限制，是一项准入制相当宽的考试。
三级翻译水平适合非英语专业的六级过了的考生或英语专业大专水平的人去考，而二级则是英语专业本科或研究生水平的人可考。
一个合格的翻译需要有较高的中外文造诣和丰富的翻译经验(50万字以上)，并应不间断地进行翻译练习，这样才能保持较高的翻译水准。
以英语为例，并不是大学英语考过6级或8级就可以做翻译，大学英语6-8级只要求6000左右单词的词汇量。
这对于读懂稍有难度的稿件是不够的。
更重要的是，应试的英语考试与实际的翻译需求之间存在者很大的差别。
1.表达能力对于自己能够理解的内容，应能够流畅地表达出来，即良好的中外文文字表达能力。
最简单的检验自己表达能力的方式是看自己用母语的写作水平。
如果用母语写作时文章的组织、语法、句法、词汇等方面有问题，那么在翻译的过程种，无疑也会出现这些问题。
