AConsider these five words: island, honour, sign tongue, climb. At first glance, you probably don't think they have anything in common. Then, you might find some of them contain the most common letter in the English language. And you might need to go back to your grade-school grammar lessons to see the connection. If you're still confused, say each word slowly. Did you notice a missing syllable (音节) or two? Actually, all five words have one or more silent letters—and that's just a small sample of them. It's no secret that the English language has lots of crazy grammar rules, and the way we pronounce words is no exception. While there are 26 letters in the alphabet, they share at least 44 different pronunciations among them. The letter A, for example, has seven different English pronunciations alone. At least you can safely ignore these common grammar rules. On top of that, almost every letter in the alphabet has a silent usage, too. Think about it: From the C in scissors to the U in build, the English language has a bad habit of dropping letters in certain words. Even unusual letters like Z and J are silent in words that we have adopted from foreign languages, such as marijuana (originally a Spanish word ) and laissezfaire ( French ).But as Merriam-Webster Dictionary points out, one unusual letter is never silent: the letter V. While it makes an appearance in words like quiver and vivid, you can be sure it always behaves exactly the same way. That might change soon, though. Last year, President Donald Trump tweeted the word "covfefe", which caused heated debate about how, exactly, one should say this made-up term. Some suggested that it be pronounced with a silent V.21. What do the underlined words in Paragraph 1 have in common?A. They contain exactly the same letters.B. They have one or more silent letters.C. They are difficult to pronounce.D. They all refer to a place.22. Why is the letter A mentioned in Paragraph 2?A. To show that it has many pronunciations.B. To tell us that English has many grammar rules.C. To explain that words have similar pronunciations.D. To prove English letters have various pronunciations.23. Which letter is seldom silent in the English language?A. The letter A.B. The letter J.C. The letter V.D. The letter Z.24. What is the text mainly about?A. English pronunciations.B. English dictionaries.C. English grammar.D. English vocabulary.BWhen you’re sitt ing in class or behind your desk waiting for the clock to strike a time when you can go home, it is natural that the mind can wander (走神) a bit. It is common for our mind to wander to a vacation and even travel the world. What if there is a way that you can travel the world without having to pay any money?A person that managed to make it around the world without spending much was Shantanu Starick. How did he trade off his service? Starick realized that as a photographer he had a service that people would usually be willing to pay money for, but he would instead offer his photography service to anyone who could provide him with food, accommodation and transportation. Starick has been traveling for a surprising 30 months and has visited countries ranging from the United States to Ecuador. In English-speaking countries, trading off service and communicating aren’t difficult for Starick. How ever, in farther areas where there isn’t an English-speaking person in sight it can be quite difficult. More than anything, the locals admire the effort behind trying to speak their language, even if he doesn’t exactly sound like a native speaker. You can do it too!Honestly, with a bit of confidence, drive and a skill you can trade, you’ll be able to do exactly the same as Starick.Start thinking about what you can do to get around the world without paying money. With our social networks and the connectivity our world has, you can easily connect with and market yourself to people across the world without any effort.25. What is the author's purpose in writing the first paragraph?A. To introduce the topic.B. To describe students in class.C. To give an example of travelling.D. To show peoples state of mind.26. What does the underlined phrase "trade off"in Paragraph 2 mean?A. Give up.B. Exchange.C. Cut down.D. Improve.27. What do we know about Shantanu Starick?A. He is too poor to afford the travels.B. He earns his living by traveling.C. He travels without paying much money.D. He can speak many languages.CWomen are friendly. But men are more competitive. Why? Researchers have found it’s all down to the hormone oxytocin(荷尔蒙催生素). Although known as the love hormone, it affects the sexes differently.“Women tend to be social in their behavior. They often share with others. But men tend to be competitive. They are trying to improve their social status,” said Professor Ryan.Generally, people believe that the hormone oxytocin is let out in our body in various social situations and our body creates a large amount of it during positive social interaction(互动)such as falling in love or giving birth. But in a previous experiment Professor Ryan found that the hormone is also let out in our body during negative social interactions such as envy.Further researches showed that in men the hormone oxytocin improves the ability to recognize competitive relationships, but in women it raises the ability to recognize friendship.Professor Ryan’s recent experiment used 62 men and women aged 20 to 37. Half of the participants(参与者)received oxytocin. The other half received placebo(安慰剂). After a week, the two groups switched with participants. They went through the same procedure with the other material.Following each treatment, they were shown some video pictures with different social interactions. Then they were asked to analyze the relationships by answering some questions. The questions were about telling friendship from competition. And their answers should be based on gestures, body language and facial expressions. The results indicated that, after treatment with oxytocin, men’s ability to correctly recognize competitive relationships improved, but in women it was the ability to correctly recognize friendship that got better.Professor Ryan thus concluded: “ Our experiment proves that the hormone oxytocin can rai se people’s abilities to better distinguish different social interactions. And the behavior differences between men and women are caused by biological factors(因素)that are mainlyhormonal.”28.What causes men and women to behave differently according to the text?A. Placebo.B. Oxytocin.C. The gesture.D. The social status.29.What can we learn from Professor Ryan's previous experiment?A. Oxytocin affects our behavior in a different way.B. Our body lets out oxytocin when we are deep in love.C. Our body produces oxytocin when we feel unhappy about others' success.D. Oxytocin improves our abilities to understand people's behavior differences.30.Why did Professor Ryan conduct the recent experiment?A. To test the effect of oxytocin on the ability to recognize social interactions.B. To know the differences between friendship and competition.C. To know people's different abilities to answer questions.D. To test people's understanding of body language.第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

The next term was scheduled to start at many schools on April 8, but it was delayed because of the disaster.Since the quake, many schools have served as housing for homeless residents. In fact, some students are living in their school gym and will go directly to class from there. Hard-hit areas such as Fukushima, Miyagi, and Iwate face additional problems. More than 200 schools in those areas were destroyed completely. Now, more than four million vehicles a year cross the 1,352ft-long toll(通行费)bridge over the Avon Gorge. The £ 1 toll for every journey pays for its maintenance. The history of the bridge, dating back to 1864, is kept alive through a programme of tours, events and exhibitions.Infinity Bridge, Stockton-On-TeesA pedestrian(行人)and cycle footbridge across the River Tees, its working title was the North Shore Footbridge, before it was given its grander name when opened in 2009. For example, a permanent partially-underwater sea exploration station, called the Sea Orbiter, is currently in development. The oceans play a major role in controlling our climate. But we have not learned yet how to use them to cool us off rather than contribute to our overheating. Ocean organisms are said to hold the promise of cures for a wide of the unique eyes of skate (ray fish) led to advances in conquering blindness, the horseshoe crab was important in developing a test for bacterial pollution, and sea urchins helped in the development of test-tube fertilization(人工授精). The toadfish's' ability to regenerate its central nervous system is of much interest to neuroscientists. A recent Japanese study concluded that the drug Eribulin, which was taken from sea sponges, is effective in fighting with breast, colon, and Urinary cancer.Given the approaching crisis of water insufficiency, we badly need to improve current methods, of desalinating(淡化) ocean water and make them more efficient and less costly. By 2025, 1.8 billion people are expected to suffer from severe water shortage, with that number jumping to 3. 9 billion by 2050-well over a third of the entire global population. If the oceansdo not make your heart go beating faster, how about engineering a bacterium that eats carbon dioxide — and thus helps protect the world from overheating — and produces fuel which will allow us to drive our cars and machines, without oil? I cannot find any evidence that people young or old, Americans or citizens of other nations would be less impressed or less inspired with such a breakthrough than with one more set of photos of a faraway galaxy or a whole Milky Way full of stars.4. Space, the Final Frontier.D. Space, the Faraway Dream.CThe Great Barrier Reef's outlook remains “very poor” despite coral (珊瑚) recovery over the past year, Australian government scientistssaid Monday, just days before a UNESCO ruling on the site's world heritage (遗产) status. The United Nations cultural agency recommended last month that the world's largest reef (珊瑚礁) system be placed on its endangered list because of damage to the corals largely caused by climate change. The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) said the corals were now in a “recovery window” after a decade of harmful heat stress and cyclones (旋风). But such opportunities were becoming rarer due to the influence ofclimate change, the government agency, which has monitored the reef for 35 years, said in its annual report released today. “The increasing emergence of climate-related extreme weather events and starfish outbreaks is causing more severe and frequent pressures, giving the reef fewer opportunities like this to recover,”CEO Paul Hardisty said. The scientists surveyed 127 reef sites in 2021 and found hard coral cover had increased at 69 of the 81 locations surveyed in the past two years.Separate scientific research released last October found the 2, 300-kilometre (1, 400 miles) system had lost half its corals since 1995, with a series of ocean heatwaves causing mass coral death.Britta Schaffelke, research program director at AIMS, said the latest findings provided a slight hope that the reef still has the power of recovering. But she added that its future is still very poor because of the dangers ofclimate change and other factors that are affecting the reef.UNESCO has urged Australia to take urgent climate action but the government has long resisted calls to commit to net zero emissions (排放) by 2050. The government has said it hopes to meet the target “as soon as possible” without harming its economy, insisting dealing with climate change requires a global effort. The reef was worth about US $4. 8 billion a year in tourism for the Australian economy and there are fears that an “in danger” listing could weaken its tourist appeal.8. What is the major cause of the damage to the corals?A. The climate change.B. Lack of money.C. Over development.D. Too many tourists.9. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?A. The result of the survey.B. The efforts AIMS has made.C. The slight chance of the recovery.D. The terrible situation of the climate.10. What is Britta Schaffelke's attitude towards the future of the reef?A. Unclear.B. Positive.C Intolerant. D. Anxious.11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Australia wants to put the reef on the endangered list.B. The Australian government has ignored UNESCO's demand.C. Australia hopes to keep a balance between emission target and its economy.D. The Australian government refuses to take its share of responsibility of climate change.DIt’s 13:30 and 28-year-old Marten Pella 's smart phone starts pinging, a signal that it’s time for us to stop working around his living room table and instead start our workout routine together. A cartoon character wearing bright red shorts on video begins instructing us to do star-jumps and sit-ups around his apartment.Pella, a research assistant at Stockholm University, is part of the Hoffice movement, which invites workers-freelancers(自由职业者)or full-time employees who can do their jobs remotely—to work at each other’s homes to increase productivity and enjoy an active social life. Those attending Hoffice events advertised on Facebook are typically asked to work silently in 45-minuteblocks, before taking short breaks together to exercise, or simply chatting over a coffee. In addition, each participant shares daily objectives with the rest of the group upon arrival, and is invited to report back on whether or not they have achieved them at the end of the day.“Often when I am alone, I can work focused for a couple of hours but then I’m easily distracted(分心).The help of others makes me so much more disciplined.” says Pella, who attends Hoffice events as both a guest and a host. Lunches mean networking and connecting with new contacts. “People are coming from really different areas and have different professions so there can be really interesting discussions,” he says. The Hoffice movement has grown quickly since it was founded in 2014 by Swedish psychologist Christofer Franzen, now 37. He had been giving lectures on the benefits of collective(集体的)intelligence, but realised he was spending most of his own time working alone at his kitchen table. “I wanted to test more structured home co-working with friends in similar situations,” he says.Franzen says that holding events in houses and apartments creates a unique atmosphere, because there’s a sense of community and desire to contribute. He’s looking for ways to expand the social value of Hoffice, by matching up members with relevant skills to share and even encouraging jobseekers to join its gatherings.12. Where is Pella when his smart phone starts pinging?A. In his own home.B. In his office.C. In another person’s home.D. At Stockholm University.13. What do people attending Hoffice events do first when they meet?A. Watch an exercise video.B. Work silently for 45 minutes.C. Tell each other their daily plans.D. Report what they have achieved.14. What does Franzen really mean by saying “friends in similar situations”?A. They usually work alone.B. They often give lectures.C. They study collective intelligence.D. But what are you going to do with your old computer? In the past consumers have often paid high prices for their old computers, but how much do you think these computers are worth now? Few people want to buy a computer which has become out-of-date or has been replaced by a newer mode. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do with a computer which you have had for five or six years is to throw it away with your other garbage. What do many people do when they try to sell their old computers? Foolishly, they take into account its original cost and then reduce the price according to the age of the computer rather like a second-hand car. They forget that new computers are becoming cheaper every day, making old computers almost worthless. In 1985, for example, a good computer cost over $4,000. Then years later its owner would be lucky to get $ 400.One well-known computer magazine recently made a list of 10 things to do with an old computer. One suggestion was to give it away to charity or give it as one of the small prizes in a competition. The final suggestion was to keep it in a safe place and hope that it would become a collector’s item in 15 or ears —though the article in the magazine admitted that in 15 or ears, there may be so many old computers that they will all be worthless.41. We can get you a sunrise over the sea, if necessary, but not a sunset.”“But I want a sunset!” the director shouted. “Go to the airport, take th e next flight to thewest coast, and get one.”But then a young secretary had an idea. “Why don’t you photograph a sunrise,” she suggested, “and then play it backwards, Then it’ll look like a sunset.” “That’s a very good idea!” the director said. Then he turned to the camera team and said, “Tomorrow morning I want you to get me a beautiful sunrise over the sea.”The camera team went out early the next morning and filmed a bright sunrise over the beach in the middle of a beautiful bay. Then at nine o’clock they took it to the director. “Here it is, Sir,” they said, and gave it to him. He was very pleased. They all went into the studio. “All right,” the director explained, “now our hero and heroine are going to say goodbye. That is why some friendships don’t last long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth, people u sually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust. Good friends always rely on one another to speak and act honestly.Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunchmoney or your clothes. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know better.Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with each other. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so that you can understand the problem better. No two friendships are exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.51. Some friendships don’t last long because ______.A. there are too many people who want to make friends.B. some people receive friendship but don’t give friendship back.C. those who give others friendship receive friendship from others.D. they don’t know friendship is something serious.52. The best title of this passage is ______.A. Honesty Is the Best PolicyB. A Friend in Need Is a Friend indeedC. How to Be FriendsD. Three Important Points in LifeDI have a rule for travel: never carry a map. I prefer to ask for directions(方向).Foreign visitors are often puzzled in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the c orner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”In the countryside of the American Midwest, usually there are not many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat(平坦的). In many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distance. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map: they measure(测量) distance by means of time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “It’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t k now.People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because visitors seldom(很少) understand the Greek language. Instead of giving you the direction, a Greek will often say, “Follow me.” Then he will lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.Sometimes a person doesn’t know the answer to your question. What happens in this situation? A New Yorker might say, “sorry, I have no idea.” But in Y ucatan, Mexico, no one answers, “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan think that “I don’t know ” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A visitor can get very, very lost in Yucatan! One thing will help you everywhere ---- in Japan, in the United States, in Greece, in Mexico, or in any other place. You might not understand a person’s words, but maybe you can understand his body language. He or she will usually turn and then point in the correct direction. Go in that direction and you may find the post office!56. The passage mainly tells that______.A. never carry a map for travelB. there are not many landmarks in the American MidwestC. there are different ways to give directions in different parts of the worldD. The water is muddy because it washesaway soil from the hill slopes.Sometimes soil is blown away by strong winds. When the soil is carried away by water or wind, we say that the land is eroded (侵蚀). This is known as soil erosion.Plants cannot grow on eroded land. There is not enough soil on eroded land to give them the things they need. Plants need water and salts from the soil. We can do a number of things to stop soil erosion. This is called soil conservation (保护).One way of soil conservation on flat, open ground is to grow small plants such as grasses. Their roots hold the soil tightly together. Another way is to plant trees around an open field. Thus soil erosion by strong winds cannot take place. Rows of trees act as a very big wall.Soil erosion on slopes ca n be stopped by cutting “steps” called terraces (梯田). Water carrying soil cannot run straight down the slope now. It has to run down the terraces. This slows down the flow of the water. Most of the soil in the water is left behind on the terraces. There are some other ways of soil conservation.46. The Transportation Department is mapping out a new plan for the city’s parking system. There are one million cars on the road in Shanghai but only enough public parking space to provide room for 15 percent of these vehicles. It is no wonder that local drivers get so worried trying to find a place to park. The city is seeing a rise in private car owners. In March, the city sentout 2,000 private car licenses, the highest number of licenses ever sent out in a month. And prices rose to 14,600 yuan, 500 more than in February. Industry experts say this suggests that local people have a strong, active interest in buying cars.By the year 2020, the number of automobiles in Shanghai will probably reach two million. If one parking lot is for each car, then a lot of parking space should be built for these vehicles.Downtown Shanghai is most short of parking space. However, experts point out that simply building more parking lots in downtown areas is not practical and doesn’t provide an ideal solution. The idea of “ Park &Ride” system has been suggested. This means that drivers can leave their vehicles in car parks nearby subway or bus stations and ride public transport to go downtown. Based on this idea, the city will limit the number of parking lots in downtown areas and demand higher parking fees but build more parking areas near main subway and bus stops.57.The underlined phrase “ mapping out ” in the first paragraph means__________.A. makingB. arguingC. commandingD. requesting58. In Italy, when you order a coffee in a cafe or bar(酒吧), you are served with a tiny, bitter espresso. This is “normal (正常的) coffee” for Italians and they are not so interested in the huge coffees that we drink in the UK. If you want more than one sip(小口) of coffee in Italy, lungo is a good choice. In addition, while takeaway coffee is quite popular among Brits, it is not very common at all in Italy. Generally, Italians prefer to drink their tiny coffees while standing at the bar and, for many, this short break is an important part of their day.Usually, breakfast in a bar in Italy -includes a coffee and a pastry (酥皮糕点). Cappuccinos are very popular at breakfast time and, for me, a creamy cappuccino and a pastry with chocolate is the perfect way to start the day. Finally, I have found that coffee in Italy, such as espresso or macchiato (an espresso with a drop of milk), is so much cheaper than coffee in the UK. They are small, of course, but this means that in Italy it is possible to go out for coffee every day without breaking the bank.32.How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed?A.By time.B. By space.C. By comparisonD.By example.33.Which coffee will you get in Italy if you order one without special instructions?A. Espresso.B. Lungo.C. Cappuccino.D.
