2010 年 1 月 4 日听写文本Hi, everyone.Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide. My name is Steve.Hi, everyone. My name is Hazel.Hazel, guess what? What?I decided to get a pet.A pet! That’s great, Steve.Pets are a lot of fun.Yeah.And pets are a lot of work too. It’s important to choose a pet that’s just right for you.Mm, that’s true, so I decided to get...A dog? No.A cat.No, no, no.I want a giraffe.A giraffe? Why?Well, giraffes are tall like me.Yeah, but giraffes are too tall to fit in your apartment, Steve.Hmm.Then how about a kangaroo?I can have it, you know, carry my stuff in its pocket.Uh, Steve, do you really want a kangaroo jumping on your bed at night?Hmm, I guess you’re right. So which pet should I get, Hazel?Hmm... Oh, I know.Let’s ask the pet expert. You mean an animal doctor?Yeah. Today’s guest is a veterinarian.Oh.Maybe he can help suggest a pet that fits my lifestyle.I think that’s what we should do, Steve:Ask the expert.Oh, wait!I just thought of the perfect pet.Oh, yeah?Oh, what is it?A fish.A fish!Steve, that’s a great pet for you. That’s right.I’ve always wanted to have a shark.A shark!Steve!Yeah. I can keep it in the swimming pool.Oh, Steve, wait.I think you’d better ask the expert.Hmm. Good idea, Hazel.Friends, let’s turn to page fourteen in our magazines and learn about pets.Happy Pets, Happy PeopleChoosing and caring for the perfect petWhat should a person consider when choosing a pet?The determining factor should be your lifestyle.Do you spend more time at home or outdoors?Do you have small children or elderly people in the house?Do you keep your house neat? You should also ask yourself how long you are willing to commit to the pet.Dogs and cats may live 15 to 20 years, but birds can live 30 years or more. How can people and pets adjust to living with each other?Hi, friends.I’m Chip. And I’m Chelsea. Thanks for joining us today for our Ask the Expert feature.Do you have a pet?If you do, you want your pet to be happy. And if your pet is happy, there’s a good chance you will be happy as well. This article is all about choosing and caring for the perfect pet.We talk to someone who knows quite a lot about how to do these things.Right.This month, we’re talking to an expert named Dr. Hung. And he is a uh... an expert in the field ofV eterinary Medicine. Now if something is involved with veterinary science, then we know that it has something to do with taking care of pets. We’re talking about pet care, pet health, uh, pet medicine.OK.And we could also say that he is a veterinarian since he practices V eterinary Medicine.A veterinarian is just a doctor for animals. We can shorten that and say that he’s a vet.But not only is he a veterinarian, he also acts as Chief Cardiologist uh, at the Cardiospecial V eterinary Hospital in Taipei. And a cardiologist is just a heart specialist. So I imagine, Chip, that that means he spends a lot of time checking the health of animals’ hearts.Right.And actually, uh... if you have your magazine on page fourteen, you can see a picture of Dr. Hung checking the heartbeat of the dog on the table there. And our article uh, first starts off with a question for Dr. Hung.Uh, Studio Classroom asks him:What should a person consider when choosing a pet?Now Chelsea, personally, I think I would probably choose a pet that’s cheap,a pet that uh... you know, is not too expensive. What kind of pet would you choose?Well, I think a... a cheap pet is... is good because, as you know, many pets can get very expensive. But I think I would want something that’s very cute.So I would maybe look for a cute puppy. But of course, we should probably go with the expert’s opinion on this one, so let’s find out what Dr. Hung says.He says that the determining factor or the deciding point should be your lifestyle, should be the way that you live your life. And he goes on to maybe ask some questions about your lifestyle. And he says, ”Do you spend more time at home or outdoors?”.So do you spend more of your time indoors or outdoors? At home or out away from your house? So do you have small children or elderly people in the house with you? That’s another thing to consider. And one other thing, Chelsea.Do you keep your house neat?If you like your house neat and clean and very organized, you might not want to buy a very large dog.I could see that that might get you into some trouble if the dog runs around and knocks things over on the floor. You might have a very messy house very fast.So the doctor tells us that you should also ask yourself:How long are you willing to commit to the pets? And he goes on to tell us specifically about pets’ lives. But before we go on, let’s look at that word:commit.Right. To commit to something is to promise yourself. So actually, in a wedding, you have two people committing to each other.Well, when you buy a pet or when you bring on... bring a pet into your home, then you are committing yourself to the life of that pet. You’re committing, you’re promising to take care of that pet. That’s right. And he goes on to say that dogs and cats may live 15 to 20 years, but birds can actually live 30 years or more. Now I know birds are pretty popular pets.So if you bring one home, you need to be prepared to keep it and take care of it for many, many years. That’s something to think about before you purchase one.We go on to ask Dr. Hung:How can people and pets adjust to living with each other?Let’s look at that word:adjust.Well, if you’re adjusting, then that means that you are changing yourself or you’re changing something in order to fit.So if you move to a different location, then you’ll probably adjust your lifestyle to fit that location. And here when you bring a pet, a new pet into your home, you will probably need to change your lifestyle or adjust your lifestyle to match living with the pet.All right. We have plenty more to ask Dr. Hung. And actually, we’ll get the answer to this question after we talk to Dr. Hung right now,and find out how he became a vet. And then we’ll take a break. But stay with us so we can answer this question when we return. We’re here today at the Cardiospecial V eterinary Hospital to meet with Dr. Joey Hung. He’s the Chief Veterinary Cardiologist here. And we’re going to ask him about taking care of your pets.Let’s go!Dr. Hung, tell us.Why did you decide to become a veterinarian?Um, I grew up in avery traditional Taiwanese family and parents want you to be a doctor. But I love pets better than humans, so I want to be a veterinarian.And... and then I got a very good score in the entrance examination, and then I got into a vet school to become a vet.How do you become a veterinarian? In order to become a vet, of course you have to graduate from the vet school and pass the National Board. At my time, um, we didn’t have official clinical training course, so I went to the United States for my clinical training.I went to the Animal Medical Center in New York first for my internship. And then I went to the Ohio State University for my graduate study in cardiology. And that’s the time when I decided to become a veterinary cardiologist. And then after uh, graduating from the graduate school in Ohio State University,I went down to North Carolina State University for my uh, cardiology residency training. And then after that, I... I became specialized in Veterinarian Cardiology. What’s the difference between a normal veterinarian and a veterinary cardiologist? Most people come to me because their dogs suffer from heart disease. And the reason why they know their dogs...suffer from heart disease is that their doctors tell them their dogs have heart disease, because, of course, your... your pets will not tell you, ”I have a heart disease” or... or something like that.Or sometimes their dogs are having uh... clinical signs of coughing or... or short of breath or we call that exercising tolerance. It means they walk, but they... they’re tired easily. And that’s the time when people will start to think maybe their pets are suffering from heart disease. And of course our hospital here, we have other doctors who are doing uh, general practice. And they can also do general checkup, the skin problem, the GI Gastroenterology problem, something like that.We do everything here.Welcome back from break, everyone. This month, Studio Classroom talks to Dr. Joey Hung about pets and pet care.Dr. Hung is the charter president of the Taiwan Academy of V eterinary Internal Medicine. He also serves as Superintendent and Chief Cardiologist at Cardiospecial Veterinary Hospital in Taipei. We hope that by asking Dr. Hung some key questions, we can make the issues of owning and caring for a pet clearer.Let’s listen to Dr. Hung’s response to our second question about adjusting to life with a pet beginning on line fourteen.Happy Pets, Happy PeopleGood, continuous training and lots of love are the keys to good relationships between pets and people. What is the best way to go about training your pet?Patience! Patience! Patience!Teach your pet one skill at a time, and reward your pet for good performance instead of just punishing it for failures. How much exercise do pets really need?As a general rule of thumb, most dogs need at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. Most cats, in contrast, exercise when they feel like it.Welcome back. Before the break, we... asked Dr. Hung, a veterinary specialist:What do people need to adjust or how can people and pets adjust so that they can live with one another?Well, Dr. Hung answers that first of all, you need to have good, continuous training. Now that... that’s the kind of training or the kind of teaching that is continuous. So it... it lasts a long time and it’s repeated very often. And this is training your pet to behave or to act in the way that you want it to act. That’s not the only thing he suggests. But in addition to continuous training, he also says lots of love is another key to a good relationship between pets and people.I think these are two very basic suggestions. But I think they are very good pieces of advice. There needs to be continuous training and there needs to be a lot of love in order for pet owners and their pets to adjust to one another.Sogood, continuous training and lots of love.Well, here’s a question for you.Can dogs eat chocolate?I think chocolate is pretty tasty, but can dogs eat it?Well, let’s find out.Can dogs eat chocolate? The simple answer is no.Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which dogs have a hard time digesting.Dogs will usually vomit and develop diarrhea after eating small amounts of chocolate. If dogs eat large amounts of chocolate, they may become restless or hyperactive, pant or have difficulty breathing. The heart may even stop working, resulting in the animal’s death.Well, that is some pretty good information to know if you own a dog.So now we come to the third question that Studio Classroom asks Dr. Hung. And we say, ”What is the best way to go about training your pet?”.Now this is an important question. We just talked about the fact that in order to adjust to one another, you need to provide continuous training for your pet.It kind of sounds like that’s going to take a lot of time and a lot of effort. But he has a pretty good answer for us.Right.And he sounds very passionate about his answer because he says it three times. He says, ”Patience! Patience! Patience!”.Now patience is the ability to wait for someone or something without getting angry. So if you want to train your pet well, you will need to have that ability. You’ll need to have patience. And he goes on to give some additional advice. He says, ”Teach your pet one skill at a time and reward your pet for good performance instead of just punishing it for failures.”.Let’s go back and look at the first part of that.He says, ”Teach your pet one skill at a time.”.Now it’s... it’s not very wise to think that the first time you bring home a new pet we’ll say a... a new puppy that you’re going to need...you’re going to need more than one day to teach it several different skills. You can’t teach it to sit and to go to the bathroom outside and all these different skills all at once.It takes time.Maybe just a little bit here and there.Right. So you teach your pet one skill at a time. And you reward your pet for things that it does well or for skills that it does correctly, for actions that it does correctly. If you reward someone or something, that means you give it something that it wants uh, because it did something that you wanted it to do.So for example, good teachers will reward their students when their students behave well.So be sure to reward your pet instead of just punishing it for its failures. One more question that we’ll ask today is:How much exercise do pets really need?Another important question. And Dr. Hung answers by saying:As a general rule of thumb, most dogs need at least 30 minutes of exercise a day.Now as a general rule of thumb...Well, a rule of thumb is not really a rule. It’s kind of a good tip that’s based on experience. So a good tip or a good thing to remember is dogs need about 30 minutes of exercise a day.Cats, on the other hand, in contrast, exercise whenever they feel like it.Now that’s all we have for today. But join us tomorrow when we talk more to our expert this month. Before we go today, let’s visit the Chat Room.Hey, Ashley.Did you lose something?Yes. I think I lost my keys.I thought I put them right here on the table, but I must’ve dropped them somewhere. You know, speaking of keys,I was just reading about the keys to good relationships between pets and people in today’s Studio Classroom magazine.Uh, what kind of key is the... article referring to when it says good, continuous training and lots of love are the keys to good relationships?Uh, I think I read about that too.But those are different kinds of keys. They are?How so?Well, I think we should ask Studio Classroom’s editor Linda about this.Let me contact her.Hi, Ken.Hi, Ashley. The kind of keys our lessen refers to isdifferent from the keys you use to open a door. The keys in the lesson are figurative. They don’t open up real doors, but they open up or provide opportunities. In today’s lesson, good, continuous training and love will help you open up an opportunity for a good relationship with your pet.The key leads to something you want or need. You know, many people claim to have the key to success. If you follow their guidelines, you will be successful in life.Or some people say they know the key to losing weight.Well, I hope I made this clear to you.Until next time.Bye!OK. Well, that makes sense except Linda said the keys were figurative.I don’t understand.OK. Figurative is symbolic or not literal. The keys I lost are literal. They are real. But the keys in the lesson are not real keys. They represent the secret to good relationships between pets and people.I see.So any luck with those real keys?Well, guess what?I left them inside one of my books.Oh, good.Well, you found your keys and I found the meaning of key from the lesson.Yes. Do you want to check out that book?Ah, yeah. In a minute.(Chinese).The key to mastering English.(Chinese).Hi, everyone. I’m Michelle.(Chinese).And I guess that’s all the time we have for today.See you tomorrow.Byebye.Thank you, Michelle. We always appreciate those helpful tips.Often when we talk about pets, the English vocabulary words seem pretty easy, right? We use words like cat, cute and furry.Well, with this lesson because we’re talking with a veterinarian, the words are a little more challenging. So if you need to get a handle on the World Bank and More Information words, try a little preview and review before tomorrow’s lessons.Friends, go home and hug your dog, cat, bird or fish, and then join us again here for day two of our Ask the Expert lesson.Byebye。

Energy Drinks-Good or Bad?-(2-1)-Can you get lasting energy from a drink?空中英語教室-2012-06-08[Medium]关键词:flunk,pass out, load, definitely, caffeine, boost, vibeHi,everybody, welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide. Thanks for joining us today. My name is Steve.Well, where do you go,what do you do when you need extra energy? You go to the sofa for a nap.Do you go to the kitchen for a piece of fruit or a candy bar? Now, how about getting your energy from a can? That's right. This month,in our Studio Classroom VIEWPOINTS feature,we tackle the pros and cons of energy drinks.Energy drinks,in some form or another, have been around for ages. But have you noticed that in the last year or two, they really seemed to have exploded in number.Let's open our magazines to page22and meet this month's VIEWPOINTS friends Luke and Amy.Energy Drinks-Good or Bad?Can you get lasting energy from a drink?Hi,Amy.How are you doing? You look really tired!I'm so exhausted.I didn't sleep at all last night! Why?What were you doing?I was studying for my world history test.I started studying at11:00,and I didn't stop until8:00this morning.I don't want to flunk.Wow!How did you manage to concentrate for that many hours?I would have passed out on my books long before8:00this morning.Simple.I had an energy drink.Really?Do those drinks really help you study?I know they're loaded with sugar and caffeine.(Music).Hello,friends,thank you so much for joining us here in the studio. My name is Kaylah.(Background Noise). My name is Ryan.Um, Ryan, you look a little sleepy.Oh,yeah,I've felt a little tired.I don't think I got enough sleep last night.Well,I have an energy drink.Would you like to try it?Oh.Uh,well, actually,no thanks.I don't like to drink energy drinks. Why not?Well,we're going to talk a little bit about that today in our VIEWPOINTS article which is all about energy drinks:are they good or are they bad? That's right. Are they good or are they bad?Sometimes we'd like to have an energy drink just in case we need some extra energy. But our question is:Can you get lasting energy from just a drink? And that's a great question.OK.So in order to find out, we're going to look at a conversation between Luke and Amy.And we start off with Luke. And Luke says,"Hi,Amy.How are you doing? You look really tired."Now,first of all,I said Ryan looked a little sleepy. That's another way of saying,"You look tired."But Ryan,is that really polite?Uh,actually,it's usually not polite to tell someone that they look tired. That's another way of saying:You don't look very good right now. That's right. It's more polite than saying,"You look bad."But it's also very rude.So just be careful how you say it and who you say it to.Yeah.Maybe ask,"Do you feel OK?"And if they're tired, they'll let you know. But Luke asks Amy if she is tired. So she said,"Oh,I am.I'm so exhausted," which we remember means to be really tired.Well, why is she exhausted? She says,"I didn't sleep at all last night!"Now Ryan,I think I understand why she's tired.Right, you'resupposed to sleep every night. And usually depending on your age,you need to get about eight hours of sleep a night. That's right.Well,Luke has a good question:Why?What were you doing? Why were you awake that late? And that's a great question. Most of us need to get a lot of sleep, and if you're staying up late, there's probably a reason, especially if you didn't sleep at all.Now Amy has an answer that unfortunately many of us understand. She says:I was studying for my world history test.I started studying at11:00,and I didn't stop until8:00this morning.I don't want to flunk.Oh,dear!OK.So I think many of you have probably dealt with this at some point.I know I have. You have a huge test coming up or you have a lot of homework to do,so you stay up all night long because you don't want to flunk. That's right. Now"flunk"means to fail an exam...examination or a course of study. So you can flunk a test. That means you fail the test. But you can also fail a class or a course. That is to flunk.Wow.So you don't want to fail. You want to do well. But you end up spending a lot of time awake at night and that can actually be really bad for you.He says: Wow!How did you manage to concentrate for that many hours?I would have passed out on my books long before8:00this morning.OK.If you pass out, that means you are unconscious, which means you're not awake. And so he said:I would have fallen asleep much sooner than you would have. How did you stay awake?Simple.I had an energy drink.Oh,OK.Well,energy drinks can give you energy. So Luke says:Really?Do those drinks really help you study? Now that's a good question.Do they help you study or are they just keeping you awake?Right, that's a great question. He says,"I know they're loaded with sugar and caffeine."So he knows they can help you,uh,stay awake, but can they really help you study if they're loaded with that much sugar and caffeine?Well,to be loaded with something means to have a lot of it,to...contain a lot of something. So if you have a lot of money, you are loaded with money. These drinks have a lot of caffeine and sugar,so these drinks would say they are loaded with caffeine and sugar.Right.So they have a lot of caffeine and sugar. And we know sugar is very common in sweet things-sweet foods and sweet drinks.Uh,and caffeine,we think of usually coffee. It is a chemical you can find in some drinks and some foods that gives people a lot of energy;makes them very active. That's right. Now we can say that was a...Another word for caffeine would be it gives you energy,it's a stimulant,it makes you have a lot of energy,it keeps you awake. We drink coffee in the morning to help us wake up,and that has a lot of caffeine... caffeine.Unfortunately,we can become addicted to it.You can rely on it too much.So be careful how much caffeine you drink. And be careful how you drink it.Do you get caffeine from coffee or from energy drinks?Well, right now let's watch this interview. In my opinion,I don't like energy drinks because it gives me the shakes in my hands, and it also increases my heart rate. But I did have an interesting experience with energy drinks.I was at a job interview one day,and I was very tired,so I took half a bottle of those Red Bull shots. And I'm telling you,I was jumping off the walls and I was just talking so fast, and I couldn'tconcentrate.I was just looking all over the place.Well,it was obvious that I had too much energy and I was way too hyper. But you know what happened in the end?I was hired.I was hired as one of the clowns in a theme park. So,unless you want to be a clown,I suggest you stay away from energy drinks. When I study in university,I always stay up very late to finish my artworks.Sometimes I will buy energy drinks to keep me awake.I see the vitamin in drinks can help me be more efficient and keep me from the doctor. And yes,I finish my works in the morning with an exhausted body. But guess what?I need twelve hours of sleeping each day for three days to recover from only one all-night working. Is it worth it?No,I don't thinkso.OK.Welcome back. One popular energy drink has roughly a quarter cup of sugar per16 ounce can.I think that's equal to8sugar cubes, and you can check my math on that. And if you've never heard about how bad sugar is for your health,go back and review our April HEALTH article titled Sugar and Your Health.OK.Let's jump back into our conversation with Amy's next comment on line16.Energy Drinks-Good or Bad?In my opinion, they are very effective. The caffeine in the drink gives me a little energy boost. When I drink one,I don't feel tired or sleepy when I'm forced to study for hours on end.So you think they're pretty useful when you need to stay awake.Definitely.A lot of people in our class have been drinking them recently.Energy drinks are so in style right now.You should try one sometime!Yeah,I've seen a lot of commercials for energy drinks on TV and in magazines. The vibes are really cool. But I've also read that they are extremely unhealthy.(Music).Well,are energy drinks good or bad? We've learned that they have a lot of sugar and a lot of caffeine. We said they are loaded with those.Well,we know that's how you stay awake. The sugar energy as well as the caffeine that stimulates your brain so you stay awake. But do they really help you study?Hmm,that's the question Luke left us with before the break. And Amy answers by saying:In my opinion, they are very effective. So she says,"In my opinion..."This is a phrase we can use to say:I don't know for sure,or it's not a fact all over, but from what I think, this is what I think about,so in my opinion. She says she thinks they're very effective. So they work for her. That's what she says."And the caffeine in the drink,"she says,"gives me a little energy boost."Now the caffeine is what's going to give you the most energy in an energy drink or coffee, and that could help give you a nice boost. Now to boost something,it means to improve or increase something. So it is increasing or improving her energy level. So we can boost other things.Maybe you need to...You're feeling really sad and depressed, and your friend comes over and makes you laugh. They boost your energy, they boost your confidence by bringing some joy back to life.Yeah,to raise it quickly. Now,Amy continues to say:When I drink energy drinks,I don't feel tired or sleepy when I'm forced to study for hours on end.And I know many ofyou sometimes are forced to study for hours on end. That's right, and that's our Grammar on the Go sentence,so let's visit Liz.Hi,there, friends, greetings from Toronto,Canada.I hope you're all doing well today. My name is Liz,and it's time for Grammar on the Go.So we're talking about energy drinks in today's VIEWPOINTS article and whether they're good or bad.A lot of people question the benefits of energy drinks, but there are many who really believe energy drinks are great, especially for those who have to work for a long time and are feeling tired. We read in today's article:When I drink one,I don't feel tired or sleepy when I'm forced to study for hours on end. That's our Grammar Tip sentence.Notice the phrase at the end of the sentence:on end. It's an idiom that means"continuously or without stopping."So today's sentence just means:When I drink an energy drink,I don't feel tired or sleepy when I'm forced to study for a very long time. This idiom is usually found in informal conversations when people want to describe situations that continue for a very long time. For example,Alice is depressed because it has been raining for weeks on end.Or,Linda has been having trouble with her computer for days on end;I think she should have it checked. So give this idiom a try next time when you want to talk about how something has been going on continuously. And if you like to see some more example sentences, you can check out today's Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom magazine. That's all the time we have for today. This is Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off in Toronto.Bye-bye.Thank you,Liz.So Amy says she gets a nice energy boost from energy drinks. And Luke says:Well,so you think they're pretty useful when you need to stay awake. That's right. We know she needs to stay awake because she's studying for hours on end.Yeah,so,and like many of you,you might be forced to study...for hours on end.And if you're forced to do something, that means you are made to do it.Someone is telling you that you need to do that.Or you feel like you are not prepared enough and you have to stay awake. That can be the other way that you're forced into studying for hours on end.Amy says this definitely helps her.She uses the word"definitely"in the beginning. Now what does that mean? All right. The word"definitely"means"absolutely;without any doubt."So she says yes, sure, the energy drinks do help her stay awake. Now we see that that is a full sentence all by itself. So it's an expressive way of saying it.You would say, "Definitely,"because you completely believe it without any doubt that this is true.Mmhm, that's right. And so you use that word to express that.Uh,but Amy continues to say,"A lot of people in our class have been drinking them recently."So a lot of people...I know a lot of you, maybe your friends, drink energy drinks. And they're so in style right now. That's right. So if something is in style, that means it's very popular, people are using that product a lot.Now if you are a student and are studying late at night,or you're professional and you work late hours and are up early in the morning, energy drinks are very tempting.Or even if you're an athlete, sometimes you are tempted by them. She's so convinced that they're good. She says that we should definitely try them. You should try it once sometime.Yeah,OK,so she thinks energy drinks are wonderful;they are in style;people like them. She thinks it helps her study,so she recommends that Luke should have some too.But Luke continues saying now.He says,"Well, yeah,I've seen a lot of commercials for energy drinks on TV and in magazines."They are popular. That's right. They are very popular. We see advertisements for them all the time.So we can...You know,we even think about some of the big brands:Monster brand or Red Bull.We all know that Red Bull gives you wings. It's a very famous phrase that we know from advertising. So we are familiar with them.We know what they are.Right.And he continues to say the vibes of energy drinks are really cool. Now the word"vibes"describes the character or the mood of something. That's right. We can use vibes when we talk about music as well.It gives me good vibes. It makes me feel good. It's a cool rhythm. So energy drinks have good, cool vibes. But I've also read that they're extremely unhealthy. He's making a great point right here at the end of today's article.OK,yeah, and this is,I think, the biggest problem with energy drinks. So we're just now starting to get talking about this. And we're going to continue talking about how healthy energy drinks are tomorrow. That's right. But for right now,we need to jump on over and visit Ken in the Chat Room.Hi,this is Bryan calling from the library. Is Donna Jones there?Oh.If you see her,can you tell her to return The Joy of Cooking?Yeah,it's overdue, and there's a person requesting it.OK.Thank you very much.Good-bye now.Hey,Bryan, are you looking for Donna Jones?Yes,one of the books she checked out is overdue, and someone wants to borrow it.She was in the library lately.I saw her the other day.She was?Oh,if you see her again, tell her I'm looking for her.Sure, of course.Uh,Ken,you should have just said she was in the library recently, not lately.Recently?Doesn't"recently"mean the same thing as"lately"?Yes,they do have the same meaning, but they are used differently. When we talk about a single action or event, we should use"recently".So seeing Donna in the library was a single event? That's right. You just saw her one time, right?Right.Just the other day.I saw her on the second floor. So she was in the library recently.OK.What about"lately"?"Lately"is used with continuous actions.Let's say, you've seen Donna in the library many times this past week. Then you can say she has been coming to the library a lot lately. So I can't say "recently"?Well, actually, you can.In this case, both"lately"and"recently"would work.So from your perspective, what should you say:I haven't seen Donna lately,or I haven't seen Donna recently?Either one is fine because"recently"can refer to a single event or continuous events in the near past. The thing to remember is that when you talk about a single event that happened in the near past, you can only use"recently".Thanks, Bryan. You know,I was eating a pizza recently and thought of you.Yep,you've got it, Ken.(Chinese).Hi,everyone,I'm Michelle.(Chinese).And we're running out of time.Don't forget to come back tomorrow.Bye-bye.Thank you,Michelle. We appreciate those tips all the time.So Luke leaves us with the thought that energy drinks can be extremelyunhealthy. No doubt he's been reading stuff on the Internet that says energy drinks can create or complicate problems like diabetes, heart attacks, psychological disorders, and yes, even death.Friends, what this means is you need to do more homework before you get into the habit of getting your energy from a can.OK.We'll continue this VIEWPOINTS discussion tomorrow.Until then, have a wonderful day.(Music).。

Passage 1Midlife CrisisUnhappiness in middle age, also known as midlife crisis, is a universal experience. People around the world seem to share an emotional design in life. That design is shaped like the letter U. Levels of happiness are the highest when people are young and when they are old. In the middle, however, most people’s happiness and life satisfaction levels drop. Some people suffer from midlife depression more than others. But it happens to men and women, to single and married people, to the rich and poor and to those with and without children. Generally speaking, people reach their lowest levels between the ages of about forty and fifty-five. But then, as they continue into old age, their happiness starts to climb back up. Why does all this happen? One possibility is that people recognize their limitations in middle age and give up some of their long-held dreams. Passage 2Good CompanionA good companion is better than a fortune, for a fortune cannot purchase those elements of character, which make companionship a blessing. The best companion is one who is wiser and better than ourselves. Greater wisdom and goodness than we possess lifts us higher mentally and morally. It’s true that we cannot always choose all of our companions. Some are thrust upon us. But the experience is not altogether without compensation. Companion is education, good or bad; it develops manhood or womanhood, high or low; it lifts the soul upward or drags it downward; it ministers to virtue or vice. There is no half way work about its influence. It saves or destroys lustily. Nothing in the world is surer than this. Sow virtue, and harvest will be virtue. Sow vice, and the harvest will be vice. Good companions help us to sow virtue; evil companions help us to sow vice.Passage 3Global Text ProjectBooks are a high cost of higher education. But the Global Text Project hopes to create a free library of one thousand electronic textbooks for students in developing countries. The aim is to offer subjects that students may take in their first few years at a university. The books could be printed or read on a computer or copied onto a CD or DVD. The Global Text Project is a new technology, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit on the Internet. But only one or two people will be able to make the final edits in texts. The project includes a committee of scholars, mostly from developing countries, to advice on required textbooks and their content. The group’s first book on information systems is being tested in Indonesia. Project organizers also want to offer textbooks in Arabic, Chinese and Spanish. They are working with a translation company in the United States.Passage 4HemingwayAmerican writer, Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois. He started his career as a writer in a newspaper office at the age of seventeen. During the 1920s, Hemingway became a member of the group Americans living in Paris, which he described in his first important work, The Sun Also Rises. Equally successful was A Farewell to Arms, the study of an American ambulance officer’sdisillusionment in the war and his role as a deserter. Hemingway used his experience as a reporter during the Civil War in Spain as the background for his most ambitious novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls. Among his later works, the most outstanding is the short novel The Old Man and The Sea, the story of an old fisherman’s journey, his long and lonely struggle with a fish and the sea, and his victory in defeat. Now Hemingway is the classic symbol of bravery, or strong man. Passage 5Self-ConceptThe self-concept is a complex structure. This complexity is illustrated by the idea of multiple selves. We seem to be a different person in each of many different situations. An example may clarify this concept. First, picture yourself at an athletic event. Now, contrast this image with one of yourselves taking a final exam. Finally, imagine yourself at work on a very busy day. You should probably describe yourself differently in each setting. Which image is really you? Of course, all are. We have multiple selves, each dependent on a context. Together they form our self-concept. It is the context that makes certain aspects of our self-concept more important at a particular moment. Self-concept is composed of our beliefs, values, and attitudes. Our beliefs give our self-concepts their substance, our values give them aspirations and standards, and our attitudes give them motivation. These three elements provide a structure in which we develop and build ourselves.Passage 6Family Life in IndiaFamily life is equally varied in Indian states. India is a country with many states in which people are from different cultures, and so on. The languages, clothing, customs, and traditions of people are influenced by the respective regions they live in. Most of the families in India are extended ones, in which every member has his or her own role, often influenced by age and gender. Children are cherished and considered as gifts from God. Children can look forward to continual family support throughout their lives. However, they are expected to respect their elders and parents, their wishes and family relationships. The family structure in India is typical, in which there are many wedding customs, which have to be strongly followed by people. Religion, social status, traditional practices, and regional differences influence family structures. Indians are more emotionally attached to the members of their family. Husbands and wives are not allowed to openly display their affection for one another.Passage 7Causes of Forest FiresForest fires are one of the greatest natural destroyers of our forests. It has been found that about 90% of forest fires are due to human factors. The most common cause for the forest fires is the carelessness of people. Smokers may start a forest fire by carelessly dropping lighted matches and cigarettes in a forest. Tourists sometimes throw the lighted items in the bushes around or on the ground which cause fire. There are also some natural causes of forest fires. Forest fires canoccur due to lightning which burns the trees. Earthquake is also responsible for the forest fires, while other reason for fire is volcanoes and drought. High temperature and low humidity provides favorable conditions to the fire and hence it can start in forests. Since forest fires destroy valuable trees and even kill people, we need to learn the causes and to know how to prevent them. Passage 8Choosing the Perfect Hair ColorColoring your hair is one way to express your individuality. Choosing the right hair color can be confusing whether you want to cover gray hair or give yourself a new fresh look. If you are clear about what you want exactly, it can help while choosing the hair color that is right for you. You can achieve the most flattering look, if you consider your skin makeup and eye color. Hair color that balances your complexion gives the best results. For covering gray hair, you can select a shade close to your natural hair color. Hair highlights are another way to improve your overall look. Highlights can look fascinating and make an attractive impression. They add depth and dimension to the base color or natural hair. Different hair colors suit different complexions. In order to choose a suitable hair color, you need to identify the right combination.Passage 9E-educationE-education, which stands for electronic education, has at least four advantages. First, with access to the Internet, students can overcome barriers of space and time. For example, we can make educational resources in Washington available to students in Tokyo. The second is the easy access. For example, we can put multimedia resources libraries on the Internet and students can have access to these libraries just by clicking the mouse. The third is the optimization of resources. For example, we can tape the lectures given by very prominent professors and broadcast them live through the Internet. Because of these three advantages, there is another big advantage, that is, the Internet technology makes mass education possible. As you know, it is simply impossible for the whole population to receive education on campuses. And this is where the greatest advantage of E-education lies. It offers mass education and education for lifetime.Passage 10CosmeticsCosmetics are substances used to enhance the appearance or odor of the human body. A subset of cosmetics is called makeup, which refers primarily to colored products intended to alter the user’s appearance. Cosmetic use was frowned upon at many points in Western history, especially during the 19th century when social etiquette was rigid. During the 20th century, however, the popularity of cosmetics increased rapidly. Cosmetics are now in widespread use by women in nearly all industrial societies around the world. In the United States, cosmetics are used by girls at an increasingly young age. The social consequences of younger and younger beautification have had much attention in the media over the last few years. The cosmetic industry is a profitable business for most manufacturers of cosmetic products. Given the technological development and the improvement of the manufacturing process, and not least due to the constantly increasing demand of such products, this industry reported an important growth in terms of profit.Passage 11Spy Cell PhonesA spy phone is a mobile phone or a spy device that allows a user to monitor and hear or record conversations and other activities taking place over the phone. Spy phones can function in different ways. They can be used as listening devices whereby secretive conversations can be tracked. They are popularly used by secret agencies to track criminal activities that are carried out over networks. They can be used for tracking periodic calls and recording the frequency of calls from certain suspicious numbers. Also, they can be used for monitoring business and household activities while the cell phone user is away. Although spy cell phones have many positive sides, they give rise to legal as well as moral concerns, because spy cell phone software is easily available. Cell phones are easily transferable to spy phones. Their ready availability makes them subject to illegal use.Passage 12A Popular Pastime of the English PeopleOne of the best means of understanding the people of any nation is watching what they do with their non-working time. Most English men, women and children love growing things, especially flowers. Visitors to England in spring, summer or autumn are likely to see gardens all the way along the railway lines. There are flowers at the airports and flowers in factory grounds, as well as in gardens along the roads. Each English town has at least one park with beautifully kept flower beds. Public buildings of every kind have brilliant window boxes and sometimes baskets of flowers are hanging on them. But what the English enjoy most is growing things themselves. If it is impossible to have a garden, then a window box or something growing in a pot will do. Looking at each other's gardens is a popular pastime with the English.Passage 13Health Benefits of Red wineWe all know drinks containing alcohol are not good for health, but when it comes to drinking red wine, it is the other way around. Recent studies have concluded that there are no negative effects on the body, if red wine is not consumed excessively. Certain compounds in red wine can play a very important role in protecting the heart. It is a heart-healthy drink that can be enjoyed during evening meals. If you think that red wine is only good for the heart, then you are wrong. Studies have revealed that the substance found in the skin of red grapes can restrict cancer’s development. However, the ideal consumption is not 7 to 8 glasses of red wine. Scientific studies on the potential benefits of red wine recommend that women should not have more than one drink per day; whereas men can have two drinks per day. The word “moderate” is the key to maximize health benefits of red wine.Passage 14SleepWhy is it so difficult to fall asleep when you are overtired? There is no one answer that applies to every individual. It is possible to feel “tired” physically and still be unable to fall asleep, because while your body is exhausted, you do not feel sleepy. It is not so easy to simply “turn off”. Lack of sleep complicates matters even more. Experts say adults need at least seven to eight hoursof sleep a night to function properly. When you get less sleep than that on consecutive three nights, you begin to owe four “sleep debt”. As sleep debt increases your body experiences a stress response. Now a vicious cycle has been created: You experience the feeling of being more and more tired, but your body is increasingly stimulated. “Power sleeping” for more hours on weekends is only a temporary solution. There is no substitute forgetting a good night's sleep on a regular basis.Passage 15Holidays in the USLike other nations, the United States sets aside a number of days each year to commemorate events, people or public occasions. These holidays typically are marked by a general suspension of work and business activity, and by public or religious ceremonies. Technically, the United States does not celebrate national holidays. However, Congress has designated 10 legal public holidays. During such public holidays, most federal institutions are closed and most federal employees are excused from work. Although the individual states and private businesses are not required to observe these, in practice all states and nearly all employers observe the majority of them. Since 1971, a number of these holidays have been fixed on Mondays rather than on a particular calendar date so as to afford workers a long holiday weekend. Meanwhile, there are some US state holidays particular to individual US states.Passage 16Celebrity WorshipersAre you a celebrity worshiper? If so, that might say something about the kind of person you are. Psychologists have found that people who believe in a just world are more likely to worship celebrities. Whereas people more critical of society are less likely to obsess over a celebrity. People who strongly believe in a just world believe that life is fair, that good things happen to good people and bad things to bad people. People who believe in a just world are expressing acceptance of society and its institutions. Since the celebrity system is one of these institutions, researchers suggest that it makes sense that those believing in a just world would be satisfied with how celebrities are made and thus more likely to admire and even obsess over them. Vice versa, people who do not believe in a fair world might resist worshipping celebrities, and in fact question or criticize the system that produces them and decides who gets to be a celebrity.Passage 17Organic CoffeeToday many agricultural products are grown using organic methods and coffee is no exception. Organic products have a very minimal effect on the environment because there is no use of pesticides and fertilizers. All organic produces are certified to ensure that their products are grown in such a way. Organic coffee is a multimillion dollar industry and each year the sales of this coffee are increasing. Exports of organic coffee are up in most of Europe and North America. Organic coffee is usually grown in many countries such as Africa, Asia and South America. All over the world people have become organic coffee drinkers, but Americans consume the majority of it. All organic coffee products in the USA are certified for quality. The organic coffee is produced in a very specific way and all operators are at random inspected to ensure that they meetUS Department of Agriculture standards.Passage 18Red WolvesRed wolves present a characteristic red colored fur which is more obvious behind the ears and in the neck and legs. Other than these parts, the fur color of red wolves is brown with black shading in the back and tail. Their big ears help them overcome hot and humid climatic conditions. The average size of red wolves is 4 feet in length, 20 inches tall and weight about 45 to 80 pounds. Generally, red wolves attain sexual maturity at the age of 22 months; however, there are some species that attain within 10 months. The breeding season of red wolves is during February and March and their pregnancy period is about 2 months. Females give birth to about 1 to 10 children one time around March to April. The newly borns usually stay with their parents about two years, after which, they spread around the wild. The lifespan of red wolves is around 7 or 8 years in the wild and about 15 years in captivity.Passage 19Vertical FarmsBy the year 2050, nearly 80% of the earth's population will have resided in urban centers. An estimated 109 hectares of new land will be needed to grow enough food to feed them, if traditional farming practices continue as they are practiced today. So, an entirely new approach to farming must be invented, employing cutting edge technologies. The concept of indoor farming is not new. What is new is the urgent need to scale up this technology to accommodate a fast growing number of people. Vertical farming was thus invented. Rice on the seventh floor, wheat on the twelfth, and enough food within an eighteen-story tower to feed a small city of 50,000.Vertical farms must be cheap to construct and safe to operate. If successfully implemented, they will offer the promise of urban renewal, sustainable production of a safe and varied food supply, and the eventual repair of ecosystems that have been sacrificed for horizontal farming.Passage 20The NecktieThe necktie or tie is a long piece of cloth worn for decorative purposes around the neck or shoulders, resting under the shirt collar and knotted at the throat. The necktie is one of the few fashion accessories to have survived nearly 400 years of social change. Neck decorations have been worn since ancient times to signify title or wealth. Modern decorative neckwear dates from the 17th century in France. The Industrial Revolution helped spread the style to the masses, as millions of workers migrated from farmlands to factories and the business class was born. By the 1950s, it was said that a man wasn’t fully dressed until he had put on his tie. The tie had later come to symbolize individuality as much as conformity. Neckties are available in varied size. Men and boys wear neckties as part of regular office dress or formal wear. Neckties can also be worn as part of a uniform.。

听写16-30篇文本16. The Statue of LibertyThe Statue of Liberty represents a woman holding a torch of fire. It stands on an island at the entrance to the New York City harbor. It is almost 93 meters tall, one of the tallest statues ever built. Its complete name is "Liberty Enlightening the World".The Statue of Liberty was a gift to the people of the United States from the people of France. It was an expression of friendship and the goal of liberty shared by the people of both countries. The statue was designed and built in France. France officially presented the statue to the United States Minister to France in Paris on July 4th, 1884. The statue was then taken apart and sent to the United States. New York City celebrated with a huge parade. Since then, the Statue of Liberty has been a symbol of freedom for people all over the world.17. Universities' Grading SystemsMost American colleges and universities use the grading system of A, B, C, D and F. An A is worth four points, a B three points, a C two points and a D one point. Getting a grade like a B-plus or a C-minus adds or subtracts a few tenths of a point. An F is a failing grade worth zero toward a student's grade point average.A small number of colleges reject the traditional grading system. They are organized into programs taught by teams of professors. Each program brings together different subjects and extends in length over 2 or 3 quarters. Students are required to do a major research project at the end of each program. The professors write detailed evaluations of the students. These are combined with evaluations written by the students themselves. Most teachers would probably agree that traditional grades are sometimes unfair. But professors at big schools say there is not enough time to write evaluations for each student in large classes.18. Strange FestivalsEvery country has its strange festivals. Cheese Rolling is a much-loved event traditionally held in Britain. Participants chase an eight-pound cheese down a long slope, hoping to catch it and become the champion. In Spain, baby jumping is a famous ritual, in which local men jump over all the babies born that year. It is believed to rid the babies of sin and serves as a kind of baptism. There is a naked festival held at various times in Japan. Wearing just a small piece of cloth, the freezing participants run around a city, competing for lucky charms. From chasing cheeses to running naked, it is hard to explain where most of these ideas came from and what they mean to us now. However, they are part of our cultures. Despite our different traditions, languages and histories, we do seem to have one thing in common: our love of celebrations.19. Teaching AssistantsForeign students at American colleges and universities may earn money after they successfully complete an entry-level study program. Those wishing to continue their education could work as a teaching assistant, or T.A.A teaching assistant usually works about twenty hours each week. Teaching assistants are paid to help professors teach students in entry-level studyprograms.Generally, the professor gives a talk, or lecture, to a large group of students one or two times a week. The teaching assistant meets with smaller groups of students during the week. The T.A. gives tests and reads any homework or reports the students may be required to write.Teaching assistants also meet with students who seek help. They attend teaching meetings. And some working with science professors help to organize laboratory equipment. Most American colleges and universities must honor legal requirements when employing foreign students as teaching assistants. One of these is that the T.A. must speak English well.20. American Education SystemThe education system in the United States is controlled by state and local governments. But education laws are similar in each state. For example, in all 50 states and 6 territories, all children must attend school from the age of 6 or 7 to the age of 16. Public schools are free of charge for grades 1 through 12. Private schools also operate in all states and territories. Some private schools are operated by churches and religious groups. Other private schools are not linked to any religious organization. Private schools must be approved by the state in which they operate. Most private schools do not receive government money. The parents of private school students pay the school. The school year usually begins in September and continues until June. Most states require a school year of 180 days. Some schools have changed this schedule and require students to attend school throughout the year.21. ThanksgivingThe American Thanksgiving, by law on the fourth Thursday of November, has a long tradition in the United States. The firstAmerican Thanksgiving occurred in 1621, with early North American settlers celebrating their first harvest after a harsh winter in the new world. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln made it an official holiday. Today, Thanksgiving serves as a day for family gatherings with luxurious turkey feasts, accompanied by a wide array of side dishes and pies. So this holiday is one of the busiest times for travel in America. Millions of people travel by car, train, or air, to feast with family. Besides, other traditional Thanksgiving events are prominent in the United States as well, including religious services and key youth and professional football games. What's more, the US president pardons a single turkey every year on this holiday. It is a tradition begun by former president Harry Truman in 1947.22. Music in British SchoolsMusic plays a big part in British schools. Pupils can learn an instrument at school. Traditionally, school children learn classical instruments. Younger children often learn the recorder. As they get older, they start to play the violin or piano. In fact, nearly one out of five music students is learning the violin. The piano, or keyboard, is more popular with older children at secondary school. However, more pupils than ever before are now learning the guitar, as they think playing the guitar is cool. British schools do not just offer lessons for instruments, but they have music classes for all pupils. In the past, the focus of classes was very much Western classical music. But the classes now cover a far wider range of styles, including folk music and world music. Many schools have orchestras and put on concerts each term. It is also common for pupils themselves to form their own bands.23. University DaysBritish universities start in September or October. Courses normally last 3 years, but some, such as languages, engineering or medicine, can take much longer to complete. Students usually go to university in a different town, so they need to get used to living alone, paying bills and washing their own clothes! For many, this is a difficult time, but everyone soon becomes used to it!Universities in Britain used to be free, but many students now have to pay for part of their course. Similarly, students used to receive a grant from the government. Nowadays, they have to apply for student loans or take part-time jobs. Either way, it can be difficult and many students have money problems.University life is not just about studying, however. Many students take part in drama productions or play music. Others, of course, take part in a wide range of sports, such as football, rugby and cricket.24. Test of English as a Foreign LanguageIt is the most widely respected English-language test in the world, recognized by more than 8,000 colleges and universities in more than 130 countries. It is called TOEFL, which stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. TOEFL is an important test for foreign students who want to study inAmerica. More than 4,000 American universities and other schools require students seeking admission to take the test. Each year, nearly a million individuals of all ages take the TOEFL test to demonstrate their English-language proficiency. It measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level. And it evaluates how well you combine your four skills, listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks. There are two formats for the TOEFL test. The format you take depends on the location of your test center. Nowadays, most testtakers take the Internet-based Test. Test centers that do not have Internet access offer the Paper-based Test. 25. In-service Education and Vocational DevelopmentMany people feel that finding a job successfully is the end of their schooling. This idea is rarely true, however, as each field of work requires a thorough knowledge of it. This may go beyond what could be learned in high school or university. Universities, with their complete curriculum, are intended to first teach us about everything. Later studies fill in the gap of knowledge by offering more specialized courses. Universities, however, are meant to teach the theories of any particular field, not the practical knowledge needed to do our jobs. Vocational schools has risen to fill this gap of practical knowledge. Vocational schools can aid us in this by teaching us to be especially good at one thing. If a person has enough health and energy, as well as determination, he may go to night school to take a self-teaching program.26. DictionaryA dictionary is a reference book that focuses on defining words and phrases, including multiple meanings. The most frequently used dictionary is a language dictionary that includes the majority of frequently used words in a language. Language dictionaries are made for different types of users: scholars, office workers, schools, and second language learners. There are many competing dictionaries put out by different companies. Not only do they have different forms - paperback, hardback, and online editions - but they differ in other ways. Each company, for example, uses its own version of phonetic respelling based on the research done by its experts. Other differences between dictionaries showup in other features. Many dictionaries include their experts' guidance on grammar, usage, and the history of the language. Definitions differ slightly, and sample sentences may be the work of the editorial staff or taken from real-world usage, perhaps the first known written use.27. The Graduation CeremonyIn American high schools and colleges, the last day of the school year is graduation day. The students who finish their last year in the school will graduate. The graduation ceremony is often in the school gymnasium. The people who come to watch the graduation are teachers, parents and friends of the graduates. Those students who will graduate will wear long robes and caps with square tops. The graduate who has the best record in school will make a speech. The school principal and other officials will also make speeches. Then each graduate will receive a diploma or a degree, which has his name and the name of the school. After the ceremony, students often chat with their teachers, friends and relatives who come to congratulate them. They take pictures of eachother and will show each other these pictures a few nights later at the graduation party. Graduation is a memorable event.28. The International Student Exchange ProgramThe International Student Exchange Program, or ISEP, was started in 1979. ISEP is a group of colleges and universities around the world. They cooperate to provide international educational experiences for their students.Students can study for up to one year in the United States or any of the other countries involved. They do not have to go through the usual application process to get into a school. And they pay only what they would have to pay for a term at theirown school at home.To take part in the ISEP program, students must attend a member college or university. Each school has an ISEP coordinator, who helps students apply to the ISEP office in Washington, D.C. To be accepted, students must have good grades. They are asked to list up to ten choices of American schools they would like to attend. Officials at the ISEP office then place students in the openings offered in colleges and universities.29. On-campus HousingHousing policies differ from school to school in American universities. Some schools have limited housing or none at all.Dormitory buildings might house a small number of students or many hundreds. Some dorms have suites. A suite has several bedrooms, a common area and a bathroom. Other dorms have rooms along a common hallway. Two, three or four students might share a room.Males and females often live on different floors of the same building. Or they might live on the same floor, or in some cases even share a suite if permitted. But single-sex housing is usually also available.Different groups and organizations such as fraternities might have their own houses where their members live. And there is often housing for married students. Some dorms are nice, others are not so nice. But many students say they like the chance to make friends and be near their classes.30. Working While Studying in the USInternational students are permitted to work for the college or university they attend or for a business at the school. But thebusiness must directly provide a service to students. You could work at the bookstore, for example, but not for a construction company that is building something on campus. Also, a foreign student cannot displace an American citizen in a job.Foreign students normally cannot take a job that has no connection to their school. But the government may give permission if students are suddenly faced with a situation that is out of their control. Examples include large medical bills, the loss of financial aid or an unexpected change in the financial condition of their source of support.Students must also meet other conditions. They must have attended their American school for at least one year. Government approval is given on a case-by-case basis. Students must re-apply after a year if they want to continue an off-campus job.。

IS IT TIME TO LEAVE YOUR JOB?If you see these warning signs, maybe it’s time to quit空中英语教室-2011-11-01 [Low]关键词:Resign, depressed, salary, circumstanceHi, everybody. Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide. Thanks for joining us. My name is Steve. Is it time to leave your job? Well, that’s the question we’re asking in this month’s CAREERS feature. Now the thought of quitting your job may panic you. After all, your job gives you and your family financial security, you’ve become really goo d at doing that job, and you might even have developed some good relationships with your co-workers. So yes, you might be in a safe and comfortable place right now. But don’t ever ignore the warning signs to leave a job or you will put yourself in distress. Let’s open to page 12 now and learn exactly what some of these warning signs are.Is It Time to Leave Your Job?If you see these warning signs, maybe it’s time to quit. In a bad economy, it might seem strange to consider quitting your job. However, sometimes resigning is the best way for you to move forward. Here are some signs that may point you toward the exit door:1. Your work environment is not healthy. Stress is part of any job. But sometimes the frustrations of your job can begin to harm you. They can make you sick or depressed. If you hate going to work, it’s time to leave.Hey, everyone. We are so glad you can join us today. My name is Ryan. And my name is Kaylah. Today we are talking about CAREERS. Our article is called: Is It Time to Leave Your Job? Now Ryan, often we talk about getting jobs, so it’s a little odd to talk about leaving a job.Exactly, yeah. We often look at how you can find your new career, but now we’re going to look at whether or not you should leave your current job. So this month we are going to talk about things that you should use to decide if you should leave your job. If you see these warning signs, maybe it’s time to quit. Now”warning signs” usually refer to something that gives you a warning, which makes sense. But they are not going to be actual signs like on the street, maybe traffic signs. There will not be signs like this in your life. So we’re going to look at things that you can take as warning signs, something that you can be looking for in your career and in your life to maybe change your career.Yeah, and these warning signs will often present themselves, or usually pretty easy to see. And we’re going to tell you what some of them are so you can look at your job situation and decide for yourself whether or not you should stay. Well, in a bad economy, it might seem strange to consider quitting your job. And that’s true, Kaylah, right now there is a bad economy. That’s right. The economy refers to the money that is being made and the way the exchange of money between companies and people. So it does seem weird when the economy is not good, when there is not a lot of money, when things are expensive to quit your job because that is how you provide for your family, provide for yourself. So it is odd, it does seem bizarre, a little strange to consider quitting your job. However, sometimes resigning is the best way for you to move forward. Exactly, and so “resigning” means that you quit your job. Usually when you resign, you tell your boss that you are leaving. So you have decided you don’t want to work there anymore, and you tell your boss, “I am resigning. I’m quitting this job.” And that’s a great way to move forward. That’s right. You’re giving up the position. You are not being told to leave. You make that decision for yourself. Now sometimes this is the best way to move forward. If you’re in a bad job and a bad situation, you cannot create a better situation until you move on. Well, here are some signs that may point you toward the exit door. And that just means towards a way of getting out or telling you you should get out of a bad job. That’s right. We’re going to show you some of those warning signs that you should use, if you see any of these, to decide to leave your job. Now the first one is”Your work environment is not healthy.” Now that’s a very good, a very important warning sign. If your work environment is not healthy, that doesn’t mean it has anything to do with how you are eating or exercise, it has to do with how you are treated. That’s right, how you feel, how you’re feeling at work, the way you’re being treated at work. It says” Stress is part of any job.” That is something we all do need to accept that there are times when we will be stressed. No matter how much you enjoy your job; there are still moments where you will be stressed. There will be stress in your life. But sometimes the frustration of your job can begin to harm you. And that’s what you need to be looking for, Ryan, is if you’re in a situation with the stress is too much, it’s starting to cause you to get sick, that is a... that is not a healthy environment anymore.Yeah. So here it actually is... it can affect your body too. But there are also... there could be many frustrations. And a frustration, of course, is something that you just don’t like. It’s hard to deal with. And so all of us, we usually have some kind of frustration in your job. But if there are too many, they can harm you. They can make you feel sick or even depressed. And “depressed” here is some... is an unhappy feeling, but more than just not being happy. It means you have no hope for a future, no hope that the future will be better, that there is a future that things will continue to get better. Depressed is both a medical condition and a word that we use to refer to being extremely sad. Here I think it more refers to actually having no hope because that’s what you need in a job is a future.Exactly, yeah. In fact, we’ve talked in the past about how you should always be wanting to improve at your job. You should be wanting to learn. If you’re feeling depressed, that usually means you feel sad to the point where you don’t want to learn, you really don’t want to keep going to work. And that’s not the way you should feel about your job. You shouldn’t be going to work just to make money. You should really enjoy it. You should want to go to work. So we see: If you hate going towork, maybe it’s time to leave. That’s right. If you hate going to work, if you wake up in the morning and the first thing you think is, “I hate my job. I don’t want to go to work,” that’s probably a good sign that it is maybe time to leave that company or to leave that part of your career. Now Ryan, I know sometimes there are mornings where even if you do love your job, you wake up just not wanting to go in. That’s not what this is talking about. This is talking about a very consistent dislike and hatred of your job, of what the work you’re doing.Yeah, it’s not just you feel tired one morning, and you don’t want to go to work, so you quit. No. It is as if it is continuing throughout your job. If you feel like you’re not being treated well and you feel depressed, maybe it’s time to find another job. Well, come back after the break. We’re going to look at more warning signs to decide whether or not you should leave your job. Before we go, let’s visit the Chat Room.−So Rachel, where has Heather been recently? I haven’t seen her working in the library for a couple of weeks now.−Well, that’s because she’s on sick leave. You know, actually, she got pneumonia. So she’s been recovering at home for a while. Sick leave is when your work grants you a leave of absence due to illness.−I’ve never had to take sick leave from work before.−Wow! You’ve been lucky, I guess. Sometimes employees get really sick, and they need to take a lot of time off before they come back to work.−Have you ever taken an absent leave, Rachel?−Uh, you mean a leave of absence?−Oh, yeah, a leave of absence?−Yes, I’ve taken a couple of leaves of absence. When my boys were born, I took maternity leave for six weeks with each child. The library was nice enough to give me six weeks off.−Did your husband take maternity leave too?−No, only women take maternity leave. He took paternity leave.−Paternity leave?−Right. That’s what we call “leave for new fathers.” However, paternity leave is usually very short. Some countries in Europe have a long paternity leave. But my husband’s company only gave him one week off with pay.−I see. So are there other kinds of work leave?−Yes. Bereavement leave is paid leave that an employee is entitled to because of the death of a family member. So when my grandpa died, I took a week of bereavement leave so I could go to his funeral in Ohio.−I had to take bereavement leave when my grandma died, I just didn’t know what to call it. So the word”bereavement” refers to the death of a loved one, right?−That’s right .Well, you know, Ken, I’m glad you asked me about Heather because I’ve been meaning to give her a call to see how she’s feeling. I hope she can come back to work soon.−Me too. It’s not the same here without her.(Chinese)Welcome back, everybody .Friends, there is a right time to leave your job and there’s a wrong time. It would be wrong to leave when your boss gives you a strange look, or to resign after the copy machine breaks down. So then, when is the right time? Honestly, I don’t know. Every person has a different “quitting point.” But I can tell you this; most people who leave their jobs say they regret that they didn’t do it sooner. From this, we learned the importance of listening to your gut instinct. OK, time to move on to our second warning sign, “You need more income,” on line 10. (Music). Is It Time to Leave Your Job?2. You need more income. Maybe you thought the salary was OK when you took the job. However, now you need more income to support your family because of different life circumstances. Or maybe you feel that you’re not making what you’re worth.3. You are not being challenged. You have been in your position for a while, and your skills have improved. Now the work you’re doing no longer seems interesting. Maybe you can get more responsibility at a different job.Hello, friends. We are going to look at more warning signs that maybe you should leave your job. Now it doesn’t make sense usually in a bad economy, when money is not easily there, to quit your job because that is your way of getting money, but sometimes it is important. Now before the break, we did talk about the first sign, and that’s about a healthy work environment. Our next one to look out for a warning sign is if you need more income. That’s right.”If you need more money...” income is the amount of money that you are earning at your job. And this makes sense. If you are not making the amount of money that you need, then maybe it would be a good time to find a new job. Maybe you thought the salary was OK when you took the job. And of course, that’s something that we mostly look at when we decide if we want to get a job is if there is enough salary. That’s right.”Salary” refers to the agreed-upon amount of money that you make in an entire year, so not by the week or by the month, but by the year. It talks about the entire sum of that money. Now Ryan, what would be the difference then between your salary and your income? Why do we have two separate words?Well, salary, like you said, is the amount of money you’re making every year. It is decided. Income is the actual money that you earn at your job, so. The money that you’re making, whether it is hourly or whether it is on a salary that is your income. That’s the money that you can use to spend on bills or things that you want to buy. And so here maybe you saw the salary that you were going to earn at your job was good, but now you need more income. You need more money to support your family because of different life circumstances. That’s right. Life changes all the time. Yeah. You may take a job thinking that the salary is what you need. And then maybe you have another child. Maybe someone is added to your family. Maybe you get a dog, or maybe you buy a house. There are different things in life that come into life that do change the amount of money we need all the times. All the time, our circumstances are changing. And it’s good to be aware of that. That’s right. Now circumstances, or the word “circumstance,” which is talking about a fact or an event that has... makes a situation the way that it is. So if you have a situation in your life that changes, then you have different circumstances. And so our lives are always changing. Once we start a job, maybe we decide to travel more, maybe we decide we want to buy nicer things. That would mean that our situation or our circumstances are changing. It says or, you know, your circumstances may change, or maybe you feel that you are not making what you’re worth. And I know, unfortunately, that happens a lot. When you’re working, you’re giving a lot of effort. You’re putting 100 percent of your focus into your job, and you’re giving so much. And you’re not getting paid the amount that you are giving in, putting into the job. You are worth more. And sometimes, Ryan, that’s true. You can be worth more than what you’re getting paid. So it’s important to think about that in a job. That’s right. Yeah, we usually think of the word “worth” referring to how much money something is. But here we’re talking about how your skills are used. Maybe you have spent a lot of time in school. You spent a lot of time practicing. You have skills, but you’re not being paid very much money for using them, so. You know, maybe if you’re not getting paid very much money, if you need more income, it’s time to look for a new job. That’s right. And along the line of skills, our next point is “You are not being challenged.” Now that is very important. In a job, you don’t want to be over challenged. You don’t want to be doing something you are not prepared for. But you also do not want to be in a job where you have no place to grow, where there’s nothing to continue onward if you’re staying in the same place. We need to always be learning. We need to be lifelong learners, always pursuing knowledge. So this is part of being in a job is being challenged. That’s right, yeah. Usually we think of a challenge is being something that’s hard to deal with, and that’s true. And you usually don’t want too many challenges, but you don’t want no challenges either. You want there to be a little bit of challenge that we are always learning. You’re always trying to improve, so you...We see here You have been in your position for a while, and your skills have improved. That’s good. That’s what you want at your job.So that is a good situation to be in, your skills are improving. But now the work you’re doing no longer seems interesting.” That is something that you need to think about. If you’re bored at work, if you’re sitting just looking on the Internet doing nothing, that is something to consider. Maybe moving on is a good idea.Yeah, that’s true. Maybe you’re skilled in music, but you’re sitting there looking at reports. It’s not necessarily going to help you improve, so maybe you can get more responsibility at a different job.” And that’s true. You want to have responsibility. If you’re responsible, it means you can take care of different tasks. That’s right. You don’t want to sit in an office or in any sort of work environment just being bored, doing nothing, feeling like you have put nothing into your job. That is... await the end of day when you just don’t feel good about yourself .So if that’s the way your job is going, it just might be a goodtime to consider looking for a new career.Yeah, it might be time to find a different job. These are very good tips to help you realize if the job you are in might not be the right job for you. It might be time for you to find a different job. Join us tomorrow as we will tell you more tips about finding the right job for you. We’ll see you next time. Before you leave, let’s watch today’s skit.−Smith, give me a cup of coffee.−No!−No?−No. Mr. Jones. I’m leaving this job. It’s time to quit.−But the economy is bad right now. How can you consider quitting?−Warning signs are pointing me toward the exit door.−What warning signs?−Frustration and stress. This work environment is not healthy.−Not healthy? What do you mean?−I’m sick and depressed. I hate coming to work.−So you hate this job, and you think it’s time to leave.−Right. Besides, I need more income.−But your salary was OK when you started.−But circumstances change. I have a family now. Besides, I’m not making what I’m worth.−You’re making what you’re worth.−No. I’ve been at this position for quite a while. My skills have improved.−So your work is easier now.−That’s good. But I’m not challenged. My work no longer seems interesting.−OK, so you hate this job, and you need more income, and your job is not challenging?−Exactly. So, I’m resigning .I’m moving forward. I’m quitting.−Well, not so fast, Smith. Take more time to think about it.−Well, hmm...−And uh, while you’re thinking about it, get me another cup of coffee.−Hmm...(Chinese).And you don’t want to miss what comes next. Stay tuned. Thank you so much, Michelle. We appreciate those tips. Friends, if you know in your gut that it’s time to quit your job, note that it will require a measure of courage, passion and confidence.
