Unit 4 EarthquakesⅠ阅读理解A(2018·湖州模拟)As a child,I was generally happy, singing anddancing to my favorite songs, smiling and laughing with my friendsand family. But as far back as second grade,I noticed a “darkness”about me.I didn’t enjoy participating in many things. In middle school, things in my life began to get even worse.Ibegan withdrawing from everything I once enjoyed.I was always tired.Everything was horrible. Finally, midway through eighth grade,I was told I had a chemical imbalance, diagnosed(诊断)with clinical depression, and had to take medicine. It took months for me to feel the effects of the medicine. When I began to feel happy again is when I realized that I had to take the responsibility for getting better myself, rather than relying on medicine.Aristotle said,“To live happily is an inward power of the soul,” and I believe that this quote describes what I had to do to achieve happiness.Happiness is a journey.Everyone seems to need different things to be happy.“The essentials(要素) to happiness are something to love, something to do,and something to hope for,”a quote from William Blake sums up what I believe people need to realize to be truly happy in life.People need love.I feel they need their family and their friends more than anything else in the world.People need work to do,something to make them feel they are making a difference in the world.People need to know that more good is to come in the future,so they continue to live for “now” instead of constantly worrying about the bad that could come.Love and hope are happiness.【解题导语】作者根据自己克服抑郁症的经历总结出了幸福生活的要素。

BSome pigs tend to be optimistic while others are pessimistic, according to a new research that is meaningful to animal welfare. The study, published in the journal Biology Letters,is the firstto show that mood and personality interact in an animal, influencing judgment.Asher,a researcher at the University of Newcastle’s Institute of Neuroscience, and her team housed groups of pigs in two types of environment. One reflected standard commercial conditions and the other was cushier with more space and plenty of soft, deep straw. After the pigs got accustomed to these new homes over a few weeks, the researchers picked 18 pigs from each type to train and test their judgment.“To do this,we trained each pig. In one corner of a training room there would be a bowl with chocolate sweets—pigs love them—and at the opposite side of the room there would be a bowl containing coffee beans, which pigs find bittertasting,”a researcher said.Over a number of training trials, pigs learned to go to the bowl reliably when it was in the corner where they had figured out to expect chocolate sweets. On the contrary, they quickly learned to avoid the bowl when it was in the corner where they would expect to find the coffee beans. The researchers next placed an unfamiliar bowl in different locations,to see how the pigs would react. Some gaily dashed to the bowl no matter what was inside, showing optimism that it would contain their favorite sweets. Others, however, behaved as though they expected it to contain coffee beans, displaying pessimism. The findings suggest that a onesizefitsall answer to animal welfare issues does not exist. Even if pigs are just equal to bacon or other meat for some people, there is still cause for concern. Studies have suggested that how an animal is treated during its lifetime can directly affect meat quality and taste.【解题导语】本文是一篇研究报告,讲述情绪和性格在动物中的相互作用。
4.What was the study trying to figure out?A.How to make pigs happier.B.The similarities between humans and pigs.C.How living environment affected pigs’ mood.D.How pigs’ mood and personality affected their judgment.D解析:细节理解题。

Unit 4 Wildlife protectionⅠ阅读理解A(2018·浙江名校协作体高三模拟)“Her grades are fine; I’m not worried about that, but she just doesn’t seem to love learning any more,” Alice’s mum said. She’s absolutely right. I’d noticed the same thing about her daughter over the previous two or three years when I’d been Alice’s middle school English, Latin, and writing teacher, and I have an answer, right there on the tip of my tongue, to what has gone wrong. Yet I’m torn between my responsibility to help Alice and the knowledge that what I have to say is a truth I’m not sure this mother is ready to hear. The truth for this parent and so many others is this: Her child has sacrificed her natural curiosity and love of learning at the altar(圣坛) of achievement, and it’s our fault. Alice’s parents, her teachers, society at large—we are all supposed to be blamed in this crime against learning. From her first day of school, we pointed her toward that altar and trained her to measure her progress by means of points, scores, and awards. We taught Alice that her potential is tied to her intellect(智力), and that her intellect is more important than her character. We taught her to come home proudly bearing grade As, championship prizes, and college acceptance, and not on purpose, we taught her that we don’t really care how she obtains them. We taught her to protect her academic and extracurricular perfection at all costs and that it’s better to quit when things get challenging rather than risk losing that perfect record. Above all else, we taught her to fear failure. That fear is what has destroyed her love of learning.【解题导语】本文通过Alice的例子说明了父母、老师和社会有时会扼杀孩子的好奇心和对学习的热爱。

Unit 2 PoemsⅠ阅读理解A(2018·浙江温州检测)(CHINA DAILY Oct. 20th, 2016) Itdoesn’t seem that U.S. singer Bob Dylan has much in common withliterary mavens(内行) like Ernest Hemingway and T.S. Elliot. But,last week, these three figures became forever bonded(黏合) by theNobel Prize in Literature. This year’s prize makes Dylan the first American since ToniMorrison in 1993 to win the title. At the same time, the surprisingannouncement has also burned a firestorm of discussion around the globe.Influential U.S. writer Jodi Picoult joked that she might now deserve a Grammy(格莱美奖). And well-known British-Indian novelist Hari Kunzru lamented(悲叹) on social media by saying:“This feels like the lamest Nobel winner since they gave it to Obama for not being Bush.”Dylan’s new status—a musician awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature—to a degree challenges tradition. However, this is by no means his first prize in his writing talents. Back in 2008, the Pulitzer Prize jury(普利策奖评委会) awarded Dylan a special award “for his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power”. To this point, it could be argued that what the Nobel Committee is doing is simply strengthening Dylan’s unshakable standing in th e world of literature. The words behind Dylan’s songs address social issues and have been spread from generation to generation. Protest songs like Blowing in the Wind(1962) were the anthems(圣歌) of anti-war and civil rights movements in the 1960s U.S. Densely poetic and image-rich songs such as Mr. Tambourine Man(1965) pushed the folk-rock movement. And even today, many of Dylan’s songs are still relevant and streamed regularly by people all over the world.【解题导语】曾获得奥斯卡奖、普利策奖和格莱美奖等多项大奖的美国歌手鲍勃·迪伦,以其充满诗意的音乐作品又获得了诺贝尔文学奖,这也使他成为名副其实的跨界之王。

Unit 5 The power of nature阅读提速练Ⅰ阅读理解A(2017·浙江卷10月)There are energy savings to be made from all recyclable materials, sometimes huge savings. Recycling plastics and aluminum, for instance, uses only 5% to 10% as much energy as producing new plastic or smelting(提炼) aluminum.Long before most of us even noticed what we now call “the environment,”Buckminster Fuller said, “Pollution is nothing but the resources we are not harvesting. We allow them to be left around because we’ve been i gnorant of their value.” To take one example, let’s compare the throwaway economy with a recycling economy as we feed a cat for life.Say your cat weight 5kg and eats one can of food each day. Each empty can of its food weighs 40g. In a throwaway economy, you would throw away 5,475 cans over the cat’s 15year lifetime. That’s 219kg of steel—more than a fifth of a ton and more than 40 times the cat’s weight. In a recycling economy, we would make one set of 100 cans to start with, then replace them over and over again with recycled cans. Since almost 3% of the metal is lost during reprocessing, we’d have to make an extra 10 cans each year. But in all, only 150 cans will be used up over the cat’s lifetime—and we’ll still have 100 left over for the next cat.Instead of using up 219kg of steel, we’ve used only 6kg. And because the process of recycling steel is less polluting than making new steel, we’ve also achieved the following significant savings: in energy use—47% to 74%; in air pollution—85%; in water pollution—35%; in water use—40%.【解题导语】本文首段点明主旨:回收利用可大大节约资源,并引用伟大建筑师富勒的话和养猫喂食的例子肯定循环经济的价值所在。

Unit 2 RobotsⅠ阅读理解A(2018·浙江金、丽、衢十二校高三联考)Life is not always easy. One day you wake up feeling like you can take over the world, and the next day you wake up feeling like all you want to do is to lie in bed and hide from everything.People walk into your life, grab your hand, and lead you through the most beautiful path you’ve known, but sometimes the same people let go of your hand without warning, and you become stranded at a place where you never thought you’d feel lost.Let’s be honest, sometimes everything is going so great and it seems like nothing could go wrong, but right when you begin to think that, something so horrible comes crashing down and all of a sudden more problems come drowning around you and you just feel so hopeles s because it’s so bad...It’s so hard to understand why such things happen in life, and I personally wish I had an answer to that “why” you always ask yourself, but all I can say is no matter how hard life gets, you have to keep going. The life around you will never stop going on.I’ll be honest and say that sometimes I feel a little bit worried and all I can think is “Will I be able to keep up? What if everything goes too fast?” But I realize that being scared and living with that burden of running away from problems only slow me down even more. And I’ve come to the point where I believe that because life never stops, I shouldn’t stop either. It’s okay to take a break and to give yourself time to heal, but you cannot give up and you cannot quit.Keep positive, fill your heart with gratitude for what you already have, and always remind yourself to be humble and true to who you are!【解题导语】本文讲述了生活的不易,告诫人们要保持积极的心态,心中充满感激,要谦虚。

Unit 1 Caltural relicsⅠ阅读理解A“Hungary?”I looked at my school headmaster in confusion.“I never mentioned wanting to go to Hungary.”And with that,my adventure started. My name is Jonathan Diamond and I just finished an amazing school exchange year in Hungary.Going on an exchange had always been my dream. When my high school offered an allyear program,I jumped at the opportunity. It would pay for almost everything and all I had to do was buy a plane ticket.I knew where I wanted to go:Spain, the country of dancers wearing flowing red dresses. So when I heard that I was going to Hungary,I was pretty shocked. But I decided to make the best of it,since it was, after all,a onceinalifetime opportunity. Before I knew it,I was on the airplane, leaving for Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport,Hungary.I had difficult times when I almost gave up.Hungarian is the hardest language on the planet.Cultural differences occasionally embarrassed both my peers and me.I had to give up eating carrots,my beautiful favorite, for Hungarians think carrots are rubbish in their country. The change in the landscape was amazing, looking nothing like skyscrapers, bullet trains, cars, and people in tiny houses that I had been accustomed to.Gradually,I fell in love with the relaxing lifestyle, the warmhearted people, and getting home at 2:30 p.m.at the latest from school. And I was sad to leave on my very last day.Having the host family who took me as one of their own members was the best thing I’ve ever experienced. From my little sisters,I learned how to embrace life to its fullest. From my brothers I learned that it’s OK for a boy to run around the house. From my host parents I learned to stay positive,to smile and that when you pick the right people and take their hands, suddenly, you become friends.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述作者作为一个交换生在国外学习的经历和感受。
