全国公共英语等级4写作

全国公共英语等级4写作

全国公共英语等级4写作part 1Teachers pay little attention to those school failures, assuming that academic failure means failure in everything. What do you think of this attitude? Write a short argumentative essay(about 300 words) explaining your view.Since the 1980s, there has been heated discussion on the correlation between the academic failure and the sustainable development of a child. Some teachers emphasize that academic failure will deprive a student of any opportunity to further his college education, thus bringing about disastrous changes to his prospective career. However, through numerous practices and observations, it turns out that their statement has many restrictions.Admittedly, the idea held by those arguers does contain an element of truth. For example, the repeated academic failure will definitely leave a man frustrated, hence often casting a shadow on his mood. But these arguers tend to ignore two other essential aspects. First, they fail to take into account the possibility that many people, though presenting a poor academic performance at school, turn out to be outstanding in realms other than their original academic research and study. Consider Charles Darwin who often flunked in his medical study. He later became the founder of the Natural Selection and Evolution. In this sense, the academic frustration is not always synonymous to the bankruptcy of one’s future professional career. Second, the teachers’ assertion doesn’t provide sufficient data to narrow down the exact correlation between the academic competence and the future achievement. Therefore, any further conclusion addressing the problem must be based on thorough investigation. As a matter of fact, when Albert Einstein was young, he couldn’t properly complete certain simple calcu lation. But he finally established himself as the founder of the Theory of Relativity. Given reasons above, the argument that the academic failure meansfailure in everything, under a careful scrutiny, turns out to be groundless in its hasty conclusion. In conclusion, these teachers’ evidence lends little credible support to their claim. To persuade people that academic success is central in one’s career, those teachers would need to provide clearevidence, sufficient data and thorough cause and-effect analysis of alternatives.part 2The command of one or more foreign languages is now a valuable asset for young people. While some find it easy to learn a foreign language, others feel that it really gives them headaches. Write a 300-word expository essay illustrating different kinds of language learners. The issue whether a good command of one foreign language is rather complex, since it involves a conflict between the divergent motives in language learning and the suitable approaches dealing with the target language. However, the final judgment should depend on acase-by-case analysis of several key factors. To begin with, since the 1980s, China has witnessed some dramatic changes in its relationship with other countries. As a result, more foreign companies have already invested in China. Under such situation, it is not surprising at all that a growing number of people, young ones in particular, are particularly interested in foreign language learning, for their linguistic competence will probably be a passport to an esteemed joint venture or bring to them a vacancy with the handsome salary. Additionally, some observers believe thatsufficient financial support from the renowned educational institutions abroad also contribute to the rise of language learners. For example, In China, if a student performs well in such tests as TOEFL or GRE, he is more likely to be admitted by a foreign university. This consideration can also partly account for the increase of language learners. However, in some other instances, the above-mentioned situation is not always adequate. For instance, it is quite possible that a man learns a language out of his interest, or he is planning to work as aninterpreter Surely enough, these are exceptional cases, yet they do exist.Given the analysis above, it is justified to conclude that it is a social phenomenon nowadays that more people begin to learn a foreign language. But what measures should be taken so that language learners can benefit from their study? For one thing, they are expected to enhance their awareness that proper approaches are central in the language study. For another thing, they must attach importance to such basics as grammar, pronunciation or spelling. Still, they must bear inmind that it requires painstaking efforts to take a good command of a foreign language. As Samuel Johnson put it, “Words can’t move mountains. It is diligence that accounts.”。

AWhen you search Google or use Amazon, you might assume the results you see are the same as thos e viewed by your friends, family and other Internet users. But you’d be wrong. Websites and social networks track your location and search history and make assumptions about your age, race, sex and political views. They then show ads they believe to be the most relevant, in order to maximize clicks, but personalize which results you see by eliminating what they think is irrelevant. This is sold to the public as positive, making each web session relevant and interesting, yet it is leading researchers to fear this could widen divides between the North and South, rich and poor, and young and old. For example, in terms of wealth, if users are only ever shown particular products and job advertisements based on how much they earn or where they live, these users will never be given the opportunities to increase their wealth, or how much they spend on items.Princeton University has created bots(自动程序), each with their own fake profiles. Thesebots have different fake ages and sexes, earn different levels of money, are virtually(虚拟地)based in various locations around the world and have different interests. By using these bots to Array scan and research the web, the researchers hope to create a picture of not only what each of them sees, but also what sites they are missing out on.According to lead researcher, Arvind Narayanan, “Our goal is a web privacy census(普查)which will be a comprehensive map of who are collecting what information, what they are inferring from it, and who they are sharing it with. It is an important step in our final goal of figuring out how users are treated based on that information.”Personalization also has its benefits. Shopping sites such as Amazon and eBay can scan a user’s search and purchase history to offer suggestions. This can help find similar, cheaper items or items that are more suited to their needs at a glance. It’s also possible t o disable personalized ads and results. Google’s search engine lets you switch off personalization, for example.Researchers from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona and Yahoo felt the issue was so potentially damaging, and they have also created a w ay to “burst the filter(过滤) bubble”. They believe that just because people have opposing views on certain topics it doesn’t mean they won’t share interests with others.1、The underlined word “eliminating” in Paragraph 1 probably means “_______”. A.decorating B.removingC.personalizing D.protecting2、Princeton University created bots to ______.A.explain why different websites are personalizedB.offer users some advice on how to protect privacyC.assess how personalization is affecting Internet usersD.stress the advantages and disadvantages of personalization of websites3、Which of the following websites have done something to cut off personalization? A.Google and Yahoo. B.eBay and Google.C.Amazon and eBay. D.Amazon and Yahoo.4、What is this passage mainly about?A.Different websites are doing something to offer quality service.B.Personalized ads and search results could be creating different web pages.C.Personalization of different sites will lead to users’ privacy being violated.D.Personalization of shopping sites makes online shopping more convenient. Array BEncouraging life to bloom(兴旺) in the middle of a desert is no easy task. But one company in the United Arab Emirates has come up with a plan to provide drinking water for the state’s citizens. The company intends to drag icebergs from Antarctica to the gulf coast in order to harvest its freshwater. The company plans to source the massive blocks of ice from Heard Island, around 600 miles off the coast of mainland Antarctica. It will then transport them around 5,500 miles to Fujarirah, one part of the UAE. One iceberg could provide enough water for one million people over five years, according to the company. The company’s director says they have already travelled the transportation route and checked the possibility of the scheme, according to reports in Gulf News. Speaking to the site about what he is calling the UAE Iceberg Project, Abdullah Mohammad Sulaiman Al Shehi said, “We have made the technical and financial plan. We will start the proje ct at the beginning of 2018. We want it mainly for the water. It could also be good for tourism and the weather.”The UAE is one of the driest countries in the world, due to its extremely arid climate, which receives less than four inches of rainfall per year. Despite that, it consumes more water than double the global national average, putting the country at severe risk of droughts over the next 25 years. An average iceberg contains more than 20 billion gallons of water, according to the company. The iceberg takes a long time to melt as 80 percent of it is underwater, while the white ice above reflects sunlight and deflects(使转向) its heat. Blocks of ice will be placed in giant tanks, before being processed. “This is the purest water in the world.” Mr. Al She hi added.1、What can we learn about the UAE project?A.It will help the UAE harvest freshwater.B.It will encourage life to boom in Antarctica.C.It will put the UAE at severe risk of droughts.D.It will completely change the climate in the UAE.2、Where could the block of ice come from?A.The Atlantic Ocean.
