美国英语：橄榄球。全称为American football
Soccer是“足球”（football）的另外一种称法。是为了区别American football（美式橄榄球）和rugby（英式橄榄球）。
所以，足球可以称为：football；soccer
Fall into表示“落入、跌入”的意思。

激情碰撞橄榄球作者：刘行来源：《小资CHIC！ELEGANCE》2013年第20期在美国电影中，常会出现橄榄球比赛的镜头，了解美国的人都知道，橄榄球在美国是超越了篮球与棒球的第一运动，他们将橄榄球叫Football。
但是橄榄球真正起源于英国的拉格比，所以英国就将橄榄球称作Rugby。
如今的美式橄榄球也是源自英式橄榄球，但二者却有着很大的不同。
一、Football与Soccer的区别不知道是不是很多人至今仍搞不清Football与Soccer这两个单词的区别，因为它们都是在中学英语课本中学过的单词，小编记得老师当时反复讲了许多遍大家都搞不清，所以在这里也想让依然稀里糊涂的同学重新认识一下这两个词。
在标准的英国英语当中，Football就是指足球，不仅是在英国，在全世界范围内，Football 是足球的标准英语名称，国际足联也是这么认为的。
国际足联的名称FIFA中的“F”就是Football的意思。
所以说Football是足球的官方名称。
而在美国英语当中，美国人所说的Football指的是美国人热衷的橄榄球运动，于是他们又找到了一个对传统足球的新称呼，就是Soccer。
简而言之，Football是全世界人民对足球的普遍称呼以及各种国际足球组织的官方称呼，只有在美国Football才是橄榄球的意思，而Soccer 只是美国人对足球的一个方言性质的称呼。
二、另外一个单词RugbyRugby是英国一个城镇的名字拉格比，但是在英国它也是橄榄球的意思。
1823年的某一天，英格兰沃里克郡拉格比镇的拉格比学校正在举办校内足球比赛，有一位名为威廉·韦伯·艾利斯的学生，因为一次踢球失误感到懊恼，一时心血来潮，便抱起球跑向对方球门。
此动作虽然犯规，却引起在场观众的兴趣。
此后在该校的足球比赛中，抱球跑的情况便频频发生，并逐渐传播开来。
后来经由一些热心人士的研究与改善，便逐渐发展成为一项新的运动。
由于是从拉格比学校开始发展的一种足球衍生运动，便称之为“拉格比足球”，也就是现在橄榄球运动的起源。
