Every few months, my class does a park clean-up day where we pick up litter and pull weeds at Oakwood Park. It's hard work but it feels good to give back.I also try to be a good neighbor by shoveling snow from driveways in the winter and doing little chores for people when I can. This year, I made Christmas cards for all the residents at the Oakwood Nursing Home too. It's more than just a town – it's my home.篇6Unit 3 - The OceanHello everyone! In this essay, I'm going to tell you all about what I learned in Unit 3 of my English textbook. The whole unit was about the ocean and it was so interesting.First up, we learned about the different layers of the ocean. Did you know that the ocean has different zones based on how deep you go? The top layer is called the sunlight zone because sunlight can reach down to about 600 feet or 200 meters. This is where most ocean life lives. Below that is the twilight zone which goes down to about 3,300 feet or 1,000 meters. It's really dim down there. Next is the midnight zone which goes from 3,300 feet down to around 13,100 feet or 4,000 meters. It's pitch black in this zone! Finally, below 13,100 feet is the trenches zone which has some of the deepest areas of the ocean like the Mariana Trench. It's crazy to think that the ocean has so many different layers.We also learned about some of the coolest ocean animals. My favorites are probably dolphins because they are so smartand playful. But sharks are awesome too, especially great white sharks. I would never want to get too close to one of those though! We watched a video about whale sharks which are the biggest fish in the sea. They are massive but completely harmless since they only eat tiny plankton.Our teacher told us that the ocean is incredibly important for life on Earth. It produces over half of the world's oxygen and absorbs a huge amount of carbon dioxide from the air. The ocean regulates the planet's temperature and weather patterns too. Basically, we couldn't survive without the ocean!Unfortunately, humans are damaging the ocean through pollution, overfishing, and other harmful activities. Plastic waste is a major problem as it can harm ocean animals when they accidentally eat it or get tangled up in it. Chemical runoff from farms and factories pollutes the waters as well. We need to take better care of our oceans!One really interesting ocean topic we covered was about tides. I never knew that the gravitational pull from the moon and sun causes the tides to rise and fall daily. During a full moon or new moon, the tides are at their highest because the gravitational forces from the sun and moon combine. But duringa half moon, the tides are lower since their gravitational forces sort of cancel each other out. Wild, right?We did an experiment about ocean currents which was cool. Currents are these huge streams of water that flow throughout the oceans. We put a little boat in a tub of water and then used a bucket to spin the water gently. Our little boat started traveling all around the tub, just like how ocean currents can carry things across vast distances. The Gulf Stream current actually brings warm water all the way from the Gulf of Mexico up to Europe!Our teacher also showed us examples of tsunamis which are gigantic waves caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or underwater landslides. A tsunami hit Japan in 2011 and it was really scary to see the video footage. The waves were so massive that they flooded entire cities. Tsunamis happen rarely compared to normal tides, but when they do happen, they can be incredibly destructive.We read this really cool story about Jacques Cousteau who was a famous ocean explorer. Back in the 1940s, he helped invent modern scuba gear so people could stay underwater for long periods of time. With his crew, he sailed all around the world's oceans on a research ship called Calypso. His underwaterdocumentaries taught people so much about ocean life. I'd love to be an ocean explorer like him someday!At the end of the unit, we had a big project where we had to pick an ocean animal and make a diorama showing its natural habitat. I chose the great white shark and made this really awesome diorama with a fake kelp forest and everything.
