西方古典宇宙观认为，事物由物质构成，物质由原子构成。
受此影响，中国某些城市建筑仅仅是基本元素（点线面体）及其简洁形式的运用，没有考虑不同的地域文化因素。
中国传统美学认为，不同地域有不同风气、不同民俗，进而当有不同建筑。
气可感而不行实体化，不能把气仅仅作为一种原理或一种物质去把握，须要全身心去体悟。
西方建筑学以标准化方式呈现形式美，而中国传统建筑学强调放眼天地的同时细察地域，听从地域特点，因地制宜。
西方方法论强调实体。
在建筑上，一方面关注点线面体的形式法则，另一方面关注气温、雨量、温度等量化指标。
后者虽然与地域特点有关，但基本不影响建筑的形式法则，人们倾向于通过暖气、空调等器具去平衡，无需在建筑外观上予以体现。
而对中国人来说，阴阳五行不但与空间（东南中西北）、时间（春夏秋冬）相关，还与色（青赤黄白黑）、声（宫商角微羽）、味（酸苦甘辛咸）等方面相联系。
在中国传统建筑理论中，突出地域特点与突出宇宙观是紧密联系在一起的。
一个地域的建筑，往往通过其石木砖土材料的就地选取、居室空间的分割与组合、顶墙门窗的色调运用，重点突出地域-族群-文化之特点。
人们望见此地的建筑，就能干脆获得别出心裁的文化感知。
西方建筑设计更侧重和依靠建筑师的案头工作，简洁把建筑与环境，特殊是与周遭天地完全分别开来设计，往往忽视一栋或一组建筑与更远的环境乃至天地之间气化运行的关联。
这些建筑更注意单体自身的完备，忽视建筑与天地之间的关系。
