It is a truly international commodity, and today more than 50 countries in the world grow coffeebeans. (example) ______I_____. ICO organization helps coffee producers and promotes coffee conumption worldwide.ICO estimates that world production next year will reach 97.5 million bags.11.3 million bags higher than the current year. (8) ____________. As the largest producing country, Brazil is particularly important in the coffee world. In 1994 Brazil was responsible for 25% of world production, Colombia was next with 13.4%, Indonesia had 7.5%, Mexico 4.7%, Guatemala 3.8% and Ethiopia and Vietnam were equal with 3.4%.Coffee is a tough crop, and can be grown in areas where it is difficult or impossible to grow other crops. (9) However, disease is always problem for coffee production, as we can see in some parts of South America at the moment.ICO is active in educating farmers about avoiding disease and dealing with problems when they occur. The distribution chain varies from country to country, explains Pablo Dubois. In most countries the smaller farmers sell their crop to a local trader, who then sells it on to exporters. There are, however, other distribution systems. (10) ____________. Some countries, like Vietnam, have special government marketing organizations for coffee.Coffee prices often vary greatly from one year to the next. In 1997, for example, there was a large rise in the world price, which was immediately felt by the consumer. Rising prices always result in a drop in sales, which will have a bad effect on those developing countries, which are highly dependent on foreign exchange from coffee exports. (11)____________.In the opinion of Pablo Dubois, the biggest problem for his organisation is to create greater consumer awareness of the different varieties of coffee and different ways of preparing it. (12)____________. ICO is therefore concentrating its promotional activities on Russia and China. It is also encouraging environmentally friendly coffee production, and last year's seminar on coffee and the environment created a lot of interest. The future looks bright for the coffee industry. It is estimated that consumption over the next few years will continue to rise steadily. New markets like Eastern Europe and China are expected to develop fast.A. As a result, the membership now represents 94% of all exporters and 60% of all importers.B. In some of these countries, this can amount to as much as 50% of all export earning.C. In North America, most consumers already have above average knowledge of the range available.D. For example, frost and wind are particularly damaging to coffee crops.E. Larger coffee growers, for example, frequently export directly.F. The main reason for this is higher Brazilian output as production recovers from weather damage to crops.G. It is cultivated in mountain regions which can only be reached by animal transport, and in other difficult areas where modern agricultural equipment cannot be used.H. This is because there is a demand for coffee in Germany, and it is also sold in the UK and in the US.I. This make the coffee industry fairly universal, acc ording to Pablo Dubois, Head of the International Coffee Organisation (ICO), based in London.PART THREEQuestions 13-20Read the article below about stress management, and answer questions 13-20 on the opposite page.A Lesson In Stress ManagementDemands placed on us at work can often lead to considerable worry and discomfort. There are, however, ways of protecting ourselves from the stress we face at work. We interviewed Jane Collard, a consultant in stress management.1. In Jane Collard's opinion, stress is becoming an increasingly common feature of the workplace. Stress is a highly individual reaction, which varies considerably from person to person, and it is difficult for some employees to avoid it. Indeed, stress is regarded by many as part of the organizational culture of our institutions: it comes with the job. Recent figures indicate that time taken off work because of stress has increased by 500 per cent since the 1950s. Undoubtedly, changes in working conditions have led to greater pressure at work at all levels. With reductions in staffing, workloads for individual employees have increased. In addition, many employees are left worrying about the security of their jobs.2. On the stress management courses that she runs, Jane Collard tries to make the trainees realise that stress in itself is not harmful. Everyone needs a certain level of stress to enable them to feel motivated and to perform effectively. A complete absence of stress can be as damaging as overstress, since it can make people lose interest in their work, and even lead to depression. The difficulties occur when the amount of stress rises above a level which is healthy for a particular individual. If this happens, the effects are very obvious and the trainees are taught to recognize the signs. Stress may be expressed physically, for example through headaches and tiredness, or through emotional problems such as depression. A person suffering from stress ma y also start to behave differently, and can be difficult to deal with.3. While it may not always be possible to prevent stress, there are a number of ways in which it can be controlled. The first thing that the trainees learn is how to manage their time effectively. This involves, first of all, setting realistic goals for both the short and long term. Once this framework has been established, tasks are then prioritised on a daily basis. The trainees are also reminded that when they are under pressure the less important items should be left, and they should never hesitate to delegate. Everyone is encouraged to look at waysof reducing 'wasted time ', for example by grouping similar tasks together or dealing with items immedkiately.4. Jane feels that one of the most useful features of the course is that it enables trainees to deal with those demands or deadlines that they regard as unreasonable. They are encouraged to avoid being defensive, but at the same time they are advised not to be afraid of saying 'no'. They are asked to give reasons only if necessary. The training helps them to foresee difficult situations or unwanted demands, and they learn how to prepare themselves mentally. Everyone is encouraged not to get stuck in negative thought patterns, where stress can feed a circular sense of helplessness. One solution they discuss is to think of a more encouraging alternative for each negative message. They learn, for example, to remind themselves that nothing terrible happens when a demand is refused or a deadline missed. Life goes on.Questions 13-16For questions 13-16, choose the best title for each numbered paragraph from the list below. For each numbered paragraph 1-4, mark oneletter (A-G) on your Answer Sheet.Do not use any letter more than once.13 Paragraph 1 ___________14 Paragraph 2 ___________15 Paragraph 3 ___________16 Paragraph 4 ___________A Higher stress levels among top managersB Coping wit h stress through a positive attitudeC Time lost at work through sicknessD Causes of increased stress in the work environmentE Explanations for missed deadlinesF stress reduction through better organisationG Typical problems associated with stressQuestions 17-20Using the information in the text, complete each sentence 17-20 with a phrase A-G from the list below. For each question 17-20, mark one letter (A-G) on your Answer Sheet.Do not use any letter more than once.17 Most people agree that the recent increase in stress is due to changes in ____________.18 The trainees are taught that the right level of stress at work is important for good.19 Trainees learn that one way of limiting stress is by deciding upon.20 One of the most important parts of the course is learning how to react toPART FOURQuestions 21-35Read the text below about job prospects at the Provincial Bank.Choose the correct word A, B, C, or, D on the opposite page to fill each gap. Each question 21-35, mark one letter (A, B, C, or D) on your Answer Sheet.Employment Opportunities for Graduates with the ProvincialBankThe Provincial Bank is one of the biggest (example) ____________ institutions in the U.K. With its 1,900 branches and 58,000 employees, it has (21) ____________ a household name. About 40 per cent of the国际商务英语等级考试(中级)试卷第 9 页(共14页)population’s food and a large proportion of the raw materials used by industry have to be imported. In 1980 exports of goods and services were equal to about 25 per cent of the Gross National Product. In the exports of manufactures, the UK, in recent years, has done less well than her major competitors. The UK’s share of the value of the main manufacturing countries’exports fell from 16 percent in 1980 to about 9 per cent in 1999. This was due to the fact that the volume of UK exports increased at an annual average rate of 5 per cent, only about one-half the rate achieved by the main manufacturing countries as a whole and about one-third the rate for Japan.Changes in the commodity composition of exports have been very small in recent years. The share of manufactured goods has increased slightly while the share of basic materials has declined. There has been a steady decline in the share of textiles and an increase in the share of chemicals in total exports. Over the next decade the possibility of exporting North Sea Oil and the diminishing dependence on imported oil should have a beneficial effect on the UK’s visible trade balance. The most striking change in the geographical distribution of UK exports in国际商务英语等级考试(中级)试卷第 10 页(共14页)recent years has been the swing away from the traditional Commonwealth markets and a growing dependence on the market in Western Europe. Exports to Western Europe accounted for about 34 per cent of UK exports in 1989 but by 2000 this share had grown to nearly 60 per cent. This is much in line with developments in world trade as a whole, because trade between industrialized countries has been the fastest growing sector of world trade. The other important development is the growing importance of the markets in the oil-exporting countries.()1. The export of manufactures of U.K. during recent years .A. has risen.B. has done better than the major competitors.C. has fallenD. has done less well that developing countries.() 2. The swing away from thetraditional Commonwealthmarkets and a growingdependence on the market inWestern Europe.B. Changes in the commodity composition of exports.C. The increase of the share ofmanufactured goods and thedecline of the share of basicmaterials.D. the beneficial effect of the export of oil on the UK’s visible trade balance.()5. Which statement is not true?A. UK is exporting more to Western Europe.B. trade between UK and WesternEurope has been the fastestgrowing sector of world trade.C. UK will possibly import less oil over the next decade.D. UK is exporting more chemicals. Passage TwoIs a quiet revolution under way in the国际商务英语等级考试(中级)试卷第 12 页(共14页)nation’s shopping habits? Are we gradually allowing an increasingly select number of large companies to take care of all our basic requirements? The supermarket chains certainly hope so. ‘Peo ple don’t have the time to shop around any more. If they’re happy with the quality of a company’s service, then they’re likely to buy other product types from them as well,’says Jim Austin, an industry analyst. With the major supermarket brands such as Tesco, J Sainsbury and Asda already offering financial services, credit cards, own-label clothing, mobile phones, and cut-price electrical goods including computers, Austin believes that the supermarkets’diversification is set to continue.‘The UK retail food market is saturated, so their only real prospect of growth is either to enter foreign markets or diversify into new markets at home..’Tesco and J Sainsbury have done both. Having already bought foreign subsidiaries, both large supermarket chains have set up their own banks in order to offer customers financial services such as personal loans, mortgages and savings accounts.Together, the two new banks took over £2bn of customer deposits within the first year of trading. ‘They are winning business by国际商务英语等级考试(中级)试卷第 13 页(共14页)using a lower cost base to offer their customers better interest rates on savings than traditional banks,’ says Austin. However, there are question marks over long-term profitability. The traditional providers say there is bound to come a point when the new banks will eventually want to widen margins and boost profits. ‘When they start to raise prices, they might create bad publicity, which could hurt their brand,’ says one observer. ‘How will a major supermarket react, for instance, when it is faced with having to repossess a regular shopper’s home?’Shoppers, however, do not share these fears. A recent survey of 1,000 people by brand consultants Cook & Pearson concludes that shoppers will continue to buy a wider range of goods and services from supermarkets. Many people said that they would be prepared to buy a supermarket own-label car or even a house from a supermarket-branded estate agent. Interest was also shown in combining a food shopping trip with a visit to a supermarket dentist.Loyalty schemes are another incentive for customers. ‘Most supermarkets now offer bonus points with every purchase. These points add up to free air miles or cash discounts, so it really pays to stay loyal to the国际商务英语等级考试(中级)试卷第 14 页(共14页)brand in all its diversified forms,’ says Austin. ()6 Why are the large UK supermarket chains diversifying? _____________.A. Because the retail food marketin the UK has been occupiedby foreign companies.B. Because the retail food marketin the UK is saturated.C. Because the retail food marketin the UK is quite small.D. Because diversification intonew markets can promote thegrowth of the retail foodmarket in the UK.()7 How are the supermarkets able toattract business in the bankingsector? ____________.A. Because they can offer moreservices.B. Because they can offer morevarieties of commodities.C. Because they can offer betterinterest rates.D. Because they can offer free carparking for customers.()8 What are the risks involved with brandstretching? _________________.A. There may come a point whenproviders will want to raise prices.B. By offering convenient banking services. D. By offering loyalty schemes like bonus points. ( )10 The headline “Banking on a brand ” means ______________. These plants do not need much maintenance, can be grown in a layer of substrate(土层)that can be as shallow as 1.5 inches, and generally are inaccessible to the public. In contrast.a wide range of species of plants are grown on intensive green roofs, such as shrubs(灌木)and even trees, which require deeper substrate layers, and are usually grown on flat roofs. They need intensive maintenance, and are usually areas that resemble parks which are accessible to people. There are several benefits of adopting green roof technologies.Apart from the obviouspsychological and aesthetic(暮学的)benefits of garden—like environments surrounding you, some of the common‘economic and ecological benefits are:a reduction in the consumption of energy;air and water purification;recovering green spaces;and the mitigation(缓解)of the heat island effect in urban areas. The green roof research that is currently ongoing is focused on evaluating the species of plants that are suitable to be grown on roofs, the methods of propagation(繁殖)as well as establishment, nutrient(养料)and water requirement, substrates, and the quantity and quality of water runoff. The evaluation criteria of plant species are:at what rate they can be established:their capacity to withstand invasive weeds;tolerance of cold and heat;tolerance of drought conditions;capacity of persistence and survival. A number of experiments are being conducted on roof platform simulations at various research centers. These sites are generally outfitted with equipment, which are used to measure temperatures at different depths of the growing substrates, and the rate and volume of the runoff of stormwaters from each of the platforms.Green roof technology is representative of a completely new market for landscape contractors, and all roofs that currently exist and the future ones to be constructed are the potential market—a market that is too huge to be overlooked.16. It is estimated that around 10 percent of the flat roofs in Germany are greenA RightB WrongC Not mentioned17. 2008年中级职称英语考试试卷(120分钟内完成)一、阅读理解(阅读下列短文并用英语回答问题,共30分)短文一(15分)In one year the world uses as much energy as that contained in 21 billion barrels of oil. And the amount of fuel needed is growing rapidly. The supplies of fossil fuels---coal, oil, and gas---are limited. They may not last a century. Then what will take their place? For the answer, let’s look to the sky. Each day the sun showers the world with several thousand times as much energy as man uses. Here, in a sense, energy is unlimited. The sun’s energy is free for the taking. If man could capture even a small part of the sun’s energy at low cost, no one would worry about running out of nonrenewable fuels. If scientists succeed in making use of the power of the sun, this new energy will have many different uses. The sun’s energy can be used in your own house for heating and cooking. Then the sun can also be used as a source of fuel for power plants. Solar energy can be used in telephone communication, in space travel, and in farming. One of the practical problems in controlling solar energy is making it continuous. What can be done when the sun is not shining on the heating system? If you were using a solar pump for irrigation, the interruption would not matter, since plants do not need a continuous supply of water in the night time. But suppose you were heating your house by solar energy. A number of experimental houses that are heated in this way use storage tanks to hold the heat for night time and rainy spells, or they must have supplementary heating supplied by ordinary fuels.Once the sun’s energy is captured, the supply of energy will be endless. No wonder those who look to the sky see there will be great changes in our future way of life.Questions:1.What is this passage mainly about?2.What will replace fossil fuels in the future?3.What problem may arise when solar energy is used to heat the house?4.How can solar energy be stored for continuous use5. What can be expected of our life in the future if the sun’s energy is widely used?短文二(15分)In recent years we have come to realize that several threats to the environment are fundamental. One is acid rain, which is created by the millions of tons of sulphur dioxide(二氧化硫) and nitrogen oxides(氧化氮) spewed out of smokestacks and automobile exhaust pipes. The oxides mix with water vapor in the air to form weak sulphuric and nitric acid, which later falls as acid rain. The result is increased acidity(酸性) in lakes, which has curtailed the ability of many fish to reproduce, and in the soil, which has slowed the growth of trees. With every news report, the externality (外延性) of environmental problems seems to become clearer. For example, it was recently reported that Lapp villagers in northern Sweden and Norway were forbidden to eat local deer meat after their deer became polluted by fallout from the nuclear accident at Chernobyl (切尔诺贝利).But some pollution problems involve such great externalities that the whole world is affected. One example is the greenhouse effect. The steadily rising of carbon dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere causes it to trap increasing amounts of the heat radiated by the planet. The general warming trend is expected to have disastrous effects, including mass starvation in some less developed countries, flooding of entire coastalareas, and severe droughts on the Canadian Prairies, perhaps within the next fifty years.Improperly disposed wastes such as those from nuclear plants, industrial manufacturing, laboratories, and medical institution becomes another critical environmental problem; they can threaten all forms of organic life. Unfortunately, little has been done so far to solve this problem. Indeed there are many examples in which industrialized countries have literally just shipped the problem off to the poorest of the less developed countries – countries unequipped with the necessary storage and treatment facilities, and certainly too poor to deal with the serious environmental problems that will follow. For example, in 1988 the government of Guinea signed a contract with two British firms to receive fifteen million tons of pharmaceutical wastes over a five-year period. While this arrangement was very inexpensive from the firms’point of view, the payments to Guinea totaled more than four times that country’s national product. It makes it difficult to solve the problem when parts of the world are so poor that they are forced to regard such transactions as “good deals”.The users of the world’s resources simply must be made to take the external costs of their actions into consideration when making their decisions. The people who are hacking down the world’s rain forests at the rate of 1200 hectares an hour are literally cutting away the lungs of the earth, since rain forests contribute a large percentage of the oxygen in the earth’s atmosphere. But these individuals are not necessarily evil: in many cases, they are forced to overuse the environment for their own or their country’s immediate survival. For example, some developing countries’ needs for foreign exchange to pay for imports compel them to cut wood faster than it can be regenerated. They simply can’t afford to worry about the future.Questions:1. What causes acid rain?2. Why can’t deer meat be eaten in northern Sweden and Norway?3. What disastrous effects is the greenhouse effect expected to result in?4. What can improperly disposed wastes threaten?5. Why does hacking down the world’s rain forests mean cutting away the lungs of the earth ?二、英译汉(将下列短文译成汉语,每题10分,共50分)1. A look ahead gives petroleum an exciting role in the world of tomorrow. Two generations ago petroleum became a revolutionary energy source used to transport man from place to place. Next, it was used to heat homes. More recently, people have begun using it to make clothing, wash dishes and so on. Tomorrow this versatile substance may be called in to help feed man.2. Genetics technology as well as energy and environment technologies could hold this potential. But looking ahead towards the next ten years or so, the main driving force for economic and social change will be information technology. A decade from now, information technology will have penetrated every aspect of human activity. Once again, the interaction between the evolution of technology and the development of economy and society will have led to profound changes.3. Many reports on China by the media of the West are not accurate, and sometimes very unobjective and very unfair. Reports on China’s development are rarely seen in Western newspapers. They show little concern for China’s rapid progress, but care only about the difficulties and problems. If one relied only on those reports and ignored the reality of China, the picture of China in one’s mind would be a society soon to collapse. But quite on the contrary, China in fact is a politically very stable society and economically rapid growing country.4. Advertising is a way of bringing information to the public for the purpose of selling a product, providing a service, giving an idea. The information is transmitted by means of the printed words or over the air. It may by presented as a simple statement of fact, as is more frequently the case, it may be offered in colorful or even emotional language. All advertising is intended to stimulate people to do some specific things, such as buy a product, order a service, join an organization, attend a meeting or think sympathetically about a situation.5. Innovation is not just about technology; it is about how you use technology. It is not about the “new”economy; it is about how you apply knowledge. Often it is about asking the right questions, thinking clearly about the answers, and applying common senses. When you begin to stimulate innovation in one area, it has an enabling effect elsewhere. The effects of innovation are accumulative. When you begin to innovate in one area, it stimulates innovation elsewhere.三、汉译英(将下列句子译成英语,每题4分,共20分)1.要是没有你的帮助,我们就不能按时完成任务。
