HANSEL AND GRETEL.
Hard by a great forest dwelt a poor wood cutter with his wife and his two children. The boy was called Hansel and the girl Gretel. He had little to bite and to break, and once when great dearth fell on the land, he could no longer procure even daily bread. Now when he thought over this by night in his bed, and tossed about in his anxiety, he groaned and said to his wife: 'What is to become of us? How are we to feed our poor children, when we no longer have anything even for ourselves? ' 'I'll tell you what, husband, ' answered the woman, 'early tomorrow morning we will take the children out into the forest to where it is the thickest; there we will light a fire for them, and give each of them one more piece of bread, and then we will go to our work and leave them alone. They will not find the way home again, and we shall be rid of them. ' 'No, wife, ' said the man, 'I will not do that; how can I bear to leave my children alone in the forest? the wild animals would soon come and tear them to pieces. ' 'O, you fool! ' said she, 'then we must all four die of hunger, you may as well plane the planks for our coffins, ' and she left him no peace until he consented. 'But I feel very sorry for the poor children, all the same, ' said the man.

韩赛尔和格雷特,英文作文

韩赛尔和格雷特,英文作文

韩赛尔和格雷特,英文作文Hansel and Gretel were two siblings who lived with their father and stepmother in a small cottage deep within the forest. The family was poor, and the stepmother often complained about the burden of having to provide for the two children. One day, the stepmother hatched a plan to get rid of Hansel and Gretel, convincing the father that they should take the children into the woods and leave them there, so that the family could have more food for themselves.Unbeknownst to the stepmother, Hansel had overheard the conversation and, before they set out, he had filled his pockets with small white pebbles. As the family ventured deeper into the forest, Hansel would occasionally drop a pebble, leaving a trail for them to follow back home. When they reached a suitable spot, the stepmother and father told the children to gather firewood, and then abandoned them, leaving them alone in the dark, dense forest. Hansel and Gretel waited until nightfall, and then followed the trail of pebbles back to their cottage, much to the dismay of the stepmother.Undeterred, the stepmother hatched another plan. This time, she convinced the father to take the children even deeper into the woods, and Hansel was unable to leave a trail of pebbles, as the ground was covered in snow. When they stopped to rest, the stepmother and father told the children to stay put while they went to gather more firewood, but they never returned.Hansel and Gretel, now alone in the forest, began to wander aimlessly, searching for a way back home. As night fell, they stumbled upon a small cottage made entirely of gingerbread and other sweets. Hungry and exhausted, the children began to eat the walls of the cottage, when suddenly, an old woman emerged from the door. The old woman, who was actually a wicked witch, invited the children inside, offering them food and a warm place to sleep. Unaware of her true nature, Hansel and Gretel accepted the invitation, and the witch quickly locked Hansel in a cage, intending to fatten him up and eat him. Gretel, however, was forced to do the witch's chores and was kept under close watch. For days, the witch would check on Hansel, asking him to stick out his finger so she could see how fat he was getting. But Hansel, being clever, would instead stick out a small bone, tricking the witch intothinking he was still thin. Gretel, meanwhile, bided her time, waiting for the right moment to make her move. One day, the witch decided it was time to cook Hansel, and she ordered Gretel to light the oven. However, Gretel, sensing the witch's true intentions, pretended not to understand how the oven worked. The witch, growing impatient, decided to demonstrate, and as she leaned into the oven, Gretel gave her a hard shove, sending the witch tumbling into the flames. With the witch gone, Hansel and Gretel quickly searched the cottage and found a great treasure trove of jewels and gold. They also discovered the remains of other children who had fallen victim to the witch's schemes. Grabbing as much of the treasure as they could carry, the siblings set out to find their way back home.As they walked, they came across a river that was too wide for them to cross. Suddenly, a white duck appeared and offered to help them, carrying them one by one across the water. Once on the other side, the duck vanished, and Hansel and Gretel continued their journey. Finally, after many days of walking, the children reached their cottage, where they were greeted by their overjoyed father. The stepmother, however, had died, and the father was overjoyed to have his children back. With the treasure they had found, the familywas able to live comfortably and never again had to worry about going hungry. The story of Hansel and Gretel has become a classic fairy tale, teaching children the importance of resourcefulness, bravery, and perseverance in the face of adversity. The tale also serves as a warning about the dangers of trusting strangers and the consequences of abandoning one's own children.Over the years, the story has been adapted and retold in various forms, from books and movies to plays and operas. Each version adds its own unique twist, but the core elements of the story – the children's journey through the forest, the encounter with the wicked witch, and the ultimate triumph of good over evil – remain the same. The enduring popularity of Hansel and Gretel can be attributed to its timeless themes and the universal appeal of its protagonists. Hansel and Gretel are relatable characters who face challenges and obstacles that resonate with readers and viewers of all ages. Their journey is one of resilience, resourcefulness, and the power of family love to overcome even the most daunting of circumstances. In many ways, the story of Hansel and Gretel serves as a metaphor for the human experience. We all face challenges and obstacles in our lives, and like the siblings, we must draw upon our inner strengthand resourcefulness to overcome them. The tale also reminds us of the importance of family and the bonds that can transcend even the most difficult of circumstances. As we continue to pass down the story of Hansel and Gretel to new generations, we are ensuring that its timeless lessons and themes will continue to inspire and captivate audiences for years to come. The journey of these two brave siblings serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of love to conquer even the darkest of adversities.。

Hansel and Gretel
Once upon a time, there lived in a village a lovely brother and sister called Hansel and Gretel. But their stepmother did not like them at all. The morning of one day, their stepmother said to the children, "Let's go to the forest to pick some fruit."
The older brother Hansel marked his way by dropping white pebbles, without letting his stepmother know. When they reached a deep forest, their stepmother had the children work. And she stealthily crept away from them and out of the forest.
Total darkness surrounded the children after they had worked for some time, and the day grew to a close. Then Hansel saw the shining pebbles in white along the trail of the dark mountain. The children came home by looking at the pebbles Hansel had cast.
After a few days, their stepmother suggested to the children that they again go pick fruit. Hansel marked his way by dropping the pieces of bread that remained from breakfast in the morning. When they arrived at the deep forest, their stepmother ran away in secret again.
When night fell, Hansel tried to find the pieces of bread he had dropped down on the road. But the pieces of bread had been eaten up by the birds and were not to be found. The children suddenly began to be afraid.
Hansel and Gretel wandered around the forest for some time. "Brother, there is a house." Gretel shouted. They came near the house, and found that it was made entirely of cookies and candies. The children were so hungry and fell upon the walls of the house with great appetite.
At that time, a dreadful hag appeared. Upon seeing the children, she thought that, 'I am going to eat them up after they become fat.' The hag pretended to be friendly to the brother and sister, saying, "Little children, live with me. Then I will give you many things to eat."
But she locked up Hansel in a prison and had Gretel work hard. She gave a large amount of cookies and candies to Hansel every day in order to eat him after he became fat. However, the hag had weak eyesight and was unable to see well.
"Dear Hansel, please stick out your finger." Every time Hansel would stick out chicken bone through the bars of his cage. The hag was very angry and shouted, "Why you don't get fat soon? You must eat a lot in order to be fat."
Gretel knew that the like of her brother was in danger. Gretel said to the hag, "Please see if the fire in the stove is burning well. My eyesight is weak, and I am unable to see well."
The hag said, "You foolish girl! Can't you even do that? You shall not eat anything today, either!" The hag looked in the stove. At that moment, Gretel forcefully pushed the hag into the stove and closed the door.
When the hag was burnt and dead, Gretel saved Hansel and they escaped from the witch's cottage. The children wandered around for several days to find their house, eating the cookies they brought from the gingerbread house. When they returned
home they found that their stepmother had run away, but their father greeted them with delight. Thereafter, Hansel and Gretel lived happily with their father.。
