The ray of the warm sunlight told us that it was spring. A lion was sleeping peacefully in the forest. While the lion was fast asleep, a mouse went on top of the lion. The bold mouse played happily on top of the lion. Yuppie! This is really fun. The mouse ran around thumping and stomping here and there. The lion was not able to sleep with all the racket. The lion knew that there was someone on top of him. So, the lion made a surprise attack and rolled on the ground. And the mouse fell over. When the lion saw the mouse he was relieved and said, Whew! It was only a mouse. However, far away a fox had seen the scene. The fox laughed mockingly to the lion and said, You're as big as a mountain and you're afraid of the mouse. You're a coward! The fox kept making fun of the Lion. Finally the lion spoke, I wasn't afraid of the mouse. I was only shocked to find a bold enough animal not afraid to run around on top of a lion. When the fox heard this he quietly left. Some people go through life standing at the excuse counter. They say they’d like to do this or that, but then they offer all the excuses in the world for why they can’t do whatever it is. No matter what the excuses are, the only thing that is usually limiting them is their own self-perception.If I’ve learned anything, I’ve learned that a person —any person —may do anything they set their mind on doing. The things you need are willingness to work for what you want, patience to learn what you need to know and, most important of all, belief in yourself. You only need a seed, and then your faith in yourself will grow with you as you move forward. If your self-perception is that you can’t acplish something because you’re not smart enough, then take the time to learn what you need to know, and then your self-perception will change. If your self-perception is that you can’t acplish something because you never finish anything you start, then go and finish something and change your self- perception. If your self-perception is that you’re too lazy, too busy, too unworthy, too unfocused, too depressed, or too dependent on others to acplish great things, then you’re right. You are that because you believe you are, but in fact, you can change that! Life is change, and the past doesn’t equal the future. Your reality today is the result of your past beliefs and actions. Change your beliefs and actions, and you will change your future. Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right. You are what you think.Think about that the next time you need an excuse.

This slender volume opens with the story of Beniah, an infant rescued by sanitation workers from the stack of garbage in which he had been left to die. Without ever losing sight of Beniah and the too many other deserted children, the author, Sharon Emecz, tells the story of the two homes for abandoned children, Happy Life Kasarani and Happy Life Juja Farm, organized in the area of Nairobi, Kenya. Developed more than a decade ago by two indomitable couples, Sharon and Jim Powell from Delaware in the USA, and Faith and Peter Kamau from Nairobi, the two settings provide the physical and emotional comforts that would otherwise have been denied the 102 abandoned children now living there, as well as having nurtured the many more who have found adoptive homes. More than that even, the two homes have literally saved the lives of all those children. The book provides detail of the structure and functioning of The Happy Life homes allowing for an appreciation of their organization (as well as a pattern for their replication), and provides as well brief portraits of some of the children saved, of those adults who have opted to share a part of their lives with them whether through work or volunteering, and the adoptive parents who have pledged to share their homes and their love with the children who have become their own. Ms. Emecz gives the reader a real sense of the spiritual journey she has undergone in traveling from London to Nairobi, a journey she and her husband, Steve, now make at least annually.Three Days to See( 节选) 假如给我三天光明All of us have read thrilling stories in which the hero had only a limited and specified time to live. Sometimes it was as long as a year, sometimes as short as 24 hours. But always we were interested in discovering just how the doomed hero chose to spend his last days or his last hours. I speak, of course, of free men who have a choice, not condemned criminals whose sphere of activities is strictly delimited.Such stories set us thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstances. What events, what experiences, what associations should we crowd into those last hours as mortal beings, what regrets?Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow. Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life. We should live each day with gentleness, vigor and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretches before us in the constant panorama of more days and months and years to come. There are those, of course, who would adopt the Epicurean motto of “Eat, drink, and be merry”. But most people would be chastened by the certainty of impending death. In stories the doomed hero is usually saved at the last minute by some stroke of fortune, but almost always his sense of values is changed. He becomes more appreciative of the meaning of life and its permanent spiritual values. It has often been noted that those who live, or have lived, in the shadow of death bring a mellow sweetness to everything they do.Most of us, however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant health, death is all butunimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life. The same lethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of all our faculties and senses. Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearing in adult life. But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties. Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily, without concentration and with little appreciation. It is the same old story of not being grateful for what we have until we lose it, of not being conscious of health until we are ill.I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound. 篇2:经典美文英语Run through the rain雨中的记忆She had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful brown haired, freckle-faced image of innocence. It was pouring outside. The kind of rain that gushes over the top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit the Earth, it has no time to flow down the spout.

1"Time," says the proverb, "is money". This means that every moment well-spent may put some money into our pockets.

If our time is usefully employed, it will either turn out some useful and important piece of work which will fetch its price in the market, or it will add to our experience and increase our capacities so as to enable us to earn money when the proper opportunity comes. Let those, who think nothing of wasting time, remember this.

Our life is nothing more than our time. To kill time is therefore a form of suicide. We are shocked when we think of death, and we spare no pains, no trouble, and no expense to preserve life.

1"Today, you see that I am still in this company, which is because I once met a wise man, who told me a workplace truth at my most hesitant time, in the workplace, I want to turn myself into water and be put into any container. This is a friend of mine, A Qiang, who works in a famous company. He has a masters degree and his talent in mold design ability. But he cant get the promotion and reuse of the company leader. Because he is only focused on technology and does not take time to engage in relationships. Finally, in charge of the intolerable supervisor when could not play fast and loose, Jiagongjisi, he decided to resign. When he submitted his letter of resignation, he met a manager of a neighbouring department at the staircase, because there were only a few sides with him. The two people smiled and greeted each other. The manager saw a strong hand on the letter of resignation, a look of surprise, he said: "if you have another job, congratulations to you. If you are in charge of your department, you have to think about it: you must learn how to get along with different people, otherwise you will always meet such a person, and then lose your mind. This is not too familiar with the managers words, all of asudden when it comes to the tip. A lot of people in the workplace angrily stumbled does not understand the problem, the original only in this short a few words.John was shocked. After that, he ripped the letter back to the post, practicing how to get along with hate charge, although he still does not agree with some things against his principles, but he began to seriously, try to look on the bright side of things, and thus also changed from confrontation between supervisor and.A year later, because of a strong business is outstanding, company to set up a branch, and served as a responsible person. He often meet that he learned from a few words of the manager, the manager still has a cool look. Although a strong never asked him to say thank you, but he will always remember the day when I met, the wise man in the staircase, a few words of light, open a frozen and full of corners of the original stone heart. 2We should learn to thank others for laziness, because it is their laziness that enables us to have more opportunities to do things, and set up the stage for us to show their talents and the way to success.I graduated from college to be a clerk in an office of a group company. The director of the office has a special skill, that is, the article is well written and thoughtful. The chairman of the board attached much importance to him. The chairmans speech and the year-end summary of the company were all written by him.I got to the office, only a handyman, dirty, dirty work, did not name the live all I do. After I arrived, the director became more and more lazy, and some of the work that he had to do by himself was often pushed to me.Because of the great reputation of the enterprises, enterprises often have to participate in such activities as long run, mountaineering and performance organized by provinces and cities, and should be interviewed and photographed on the spot. For a long time and not working overtime, the director arranged for me to go.Company meetings often make use of their spare time in the evening, and the chairman of the meeting often forgets the time and goes to the early hours of the morning. And the meeting needs to be recorded and recorded. The director always lets me go so hard. As a result, I have a lot of night time to attend the meeting, second days to sort out the records, write reports, a lot of work. Some of our new students together, often scolded those old comrades, how lazy and Diao, exploitation of our work, take our time, the wisdom and the fruits of our labor for himself, so indignant, but some people still do.A reporter from a provincial television station to interview the chairman of the chairman, the chairman of the time is relatively tight, so arranged at 8 oclock on Sunday evening. The chairman is accompanied by the director. But the directors home is far away from the company. It takes 40 minutes to ride a bike. So he asked me to accompany him. I heard on the air, usually at night to work overtime, I have full stomach, Sunday also let me, too that. And whats more, the chairman of the board is for him to attend, and I have an appointment with my girlfriend.I wanted to top him, but later I was reluctant to take part in it.In the interview with TV reporters on that day, chairman of the board was in good spirits, and there were several sparks. That is, the development of the enterprise has been ten years now. It needs ten years to go to zero for second times, and is ready tomake a big move in 10th anniversary Daqing. The interview was only half an hour, but as the chairman and the reporters talked very much about them, they talked for more than two hours and then went to tea together. When everything is over, its one oclock in the morning. When the reporter sent, I have been very tired, not wash sleep. On the second day, I arranged the interview summary and gave it to the chairman. Then write a business newspaper published the article, the title of the article is "ten years of zero is from" - Chairman issued second entrepreneurial mobilization. The chairman felt that I was very keen to capture his inspiration, and the emphasis of the article was new and the theme was novel. The chairman was very happy. By the way, why didnt the director come last night. I said, "his home is far away." The chairman then said, "to thank the lazy people around you, to create more opportunities for yourself!"Since then, the chairman has often asked me to go to the office, and some of his thoughts and feelings have made me clear. The final report of the end of the year is also let me write. My salary doubled. I became the red man of the company, and I got more and more exercise. Most of the time, there are a lot of people dont want to do extra work in front of us, we are often not actively accept and try to do a good job, but the fear of difficulty, managed to escape, always indulge in complain and complain, in a negative, pessimistic attitude or passive waiting, watching. If you have more work to do from another point of view, it should be a very lucky thing. Because, by doing more work, you can improve your ability, increase the experience of the world, and improve the quality of your work. So, when the extra work comes in front ofus, we should cherish this rare opportunity, hold it tightly, and dont let it slip away in vain. The pie in the sky, there is always a reason for it to fall out of thin air. Therefore, we must learn to thank others for laziness, because it is their laziness that enables us to have more opportunities to do things, and set up the stage for us to show their talents and the way to success. 3My father was a self-taught mandolin player. He was one of the best string instrument players in our town. He could not read music, but if he heard a tune a few times, he could play it. When he was younger, he was a member of a small country music band. They would play at local dances and on a few occasions would play for the local radio station. He often told us how he had auditioned and earned a position in a band that featured Patsy Cline as their lead singer. He told the family that after he was hired he never went back. Dad was a very religious man. He stated that there was a lot of drinking and cursing the day of his audition and he did not want to be around that type of environment.Occasionally, Dad would get out his mandolin and play for the family. We three children: Trisha, Monte and I, George Jr., would often sing along. Songs such as the Tennessee Waltz, Harbor Lights and around Christmas time, the well-known rendition of Silver Bells. "Silver Bells, Silver Bells, its Christmas time in the city" would ring throughout the house. One of Dads favorite hymns was "The Old Rugged Cross". We learned the words to the hymn when we were very young, and would sing it with Dad when he would play and sing. Another song that was often shared in our house was a song that accompanied the WaltDisney series: Davey Crockett. Dad only had to hear the song twice before he learned it well enough to play it. "Davey, Davey Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier" was a favorite song for the family. He knew we enjoyed the song and the program and would often get out the mandolin after the program was over. I could never get over how he could play the songs so well after only hearing them a few times. I loved to sing, but I never learned how to play the mandolin. This is something I regret to this day.Dad loved to play the mandolin for his family he knew we enjoyed singing, and hearing him play. He was like that. If he could give pleasure to others, he would, especially his family. He was always there, sacrificing his time and efforts to see that his family had enough in their life. I had to mature into a man and have children of my own before I realized how much he had sacrificed.I joined the United States Air Force in January of 1962. Whenever I would come home on leave, I would ask Dad to play the mandolin. Nobody played the mandolin like my father. He could touch your soul with the tones that came out of that old mandolin. He seemed to shine when he was playing. You could see his pride in his ability to play so well for his family. When Dad was younger, he worked for his father on the farm. His father was a farmer and sharecropped a farm for the man who owned the property. In 1950, our family moved from the farm. Dad had gained employment at the local limestone quarry. When the quarry closed in August of 1957, he had to seek other employment. He worked for Owens Yacht Company in Dundalk, Maryland and for Todd Steel in Point of Rocks, Maryland. While working at Todd Steel, he was involved in an accident. His job was to roll angle iron onto a conveyor so that the welders farther upthe production line would have it to complete their job. On this particular day Dad got the third index finger of his left hand mashed between two pieces of steel. The doctor who operated on the finger could not save it, and Dad ended up having the tip of the finger amputated. He didnt lose enough of the finger where it would stop him picking up anything, but it did impact his ability to play the mandolin. After the accident, Dad was reluctant to play the mandolin. He felt that he could not play as well as he had before the accident. When I came home on leave and asked him to play he would make excuses for why he couldnt play. Eventually, we would wear him down and he would say "Okay, but remember, I cant hold down on the strings the way I used to" or "Since the accident to this finger I cant play as good". For the family it didnt make any difference that Dad couldnt play as well. We were just glad that he would play. When he played the old mandolin it would carry us back to a cheerful, happier time in our lives. "Davey, Davey Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier", would again be heard in the little town of Bakerton, West Virginia. In August of 1993 my father was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. He chose not to receive chemotherapy treatments so that he could live out the rest of his life in dignity. About a week before his death, we asked Dad if he would play the mandolin for us. He made excuses but said "okay". He knew it would probably be the last time he would play for us. He tuned up the old mandolin and played a few notes. When I looked around, there was not a dry eye in the family. We saw before us a quiet humble man with an inner strength that comes from knowing God, and living with him in ones life. Dad would never play the mandolin for us again. We felt at the time that hewouldnt have enough strength to play, and that makes the memory of that day even stronger. Dad was doing something he had done all his life, giving. As sick as he was, he was still pleasing others. Dad sure could play that Mandolin!

Take out a one-gallon jar and set it on the table in front of him. Then he took out a bunch of fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them in a jar. When the jar was over the top of the jar and no more rocks could fit in, he asked, “is the jar full?" All students should say: "full!" . The time management expert replied, "really?" He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. He poured some of the gravel in, and tapped the glass bottle wall to fill the gap between the stones. "Is the jar full now? "He asked the second time. But this time the students understood, "probably not," one student said. "Good! Experts say. He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of sand. The sand is filled with all the gaps between the rock and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, "is this jar full?" "No! "Shouted the students. Onceagain he said, "good! Then he took a pitcher of water and poured it into the jar until it was flat. Looking up at the students, he asked, "what is the point of this illustration?" One eager student raised his hand and said, "no matter how tight your schedule is, if you work hard, you can do more!" "No!" The time management expert said, "that's not what it really means. This example tells us that if you didn't blow up the rock first, you couldn't put it in the bottle anymore. So, what are the big rocks in your life? Spend time with the people you love, your beliefs, education, dreams? Remember to deal with these big rocks first, otherwise, you can't do it all your life!So tonight, perhaps this morning, you are reading this essay, and you have tried to ask yourself this question: what is the "big rock" in my life? Then, please put them in the bottle of your life first. It is better to be busy with dreams than to lose your dreams by being busy!英语经典美文阅读 2You cannot change the laws of physics . but could physics actually enable us to travel through time?It might sound crazy, but according to Einstein‘s theories, there‘s no logical reason why time travel isn‘t possible.Time travel is clearly a trickier proposition than space travel, though. And prior to Einstein, it would have been deemed utterly impossible! That‘s because the old idea about time was that it was like a cosmic metronome keeping a regular and constant beat throughout the universe. And it was thought to move in one direction only .However, what physicists now know is that time is rather more flexible than the old “ Clockwork Universe” ideas they had it. And it was Albert Einstein who set the cat among the pigeons.Einstein‘s theories about time and space were revolutionary. He b ecame a celebrity__and not just in scientific circles. It‘s only since he published his theories that scientists have been able to demonstrate that space and time really behave the way he said they did.In 1971, after Einstein‘s death, two scientists w ere able to carry out a crucial experiment. They used two atomic clocks, synchronized them, and placed one on a plane, while the other stayed in the same location on Earth. The plane then flew around the world for 80 hours. According to Einstein‘s theory, the clock on the plane would be expected to have lost time, due to being in motion over 80 hours pared to the clock on the ground. Whenthey brought the clocks together and made a parison, the clock on the plane was indeed a few nanoseconds slower than the other clock. The experiment was replicated in 1996 with advanced technology, and it was proved again__with an even bigger time difference this time. Which proves that not only is time “ warp-able” , but Einstein was arguably the greatest thinker the world has ever seen.If it were possible, however, it would present some pretty knotty paradoxes... For example, what if someone or something traveled back in time and changed the ensuing future? And have you heard the one about the time traveller who dots back and forward in time and by means of various medical technologies is able to be his own father AND mother?! And besides, if time travel is possible, where are all the people from the future__surely they‘d want to e and meet us poor stranded 21st century beings?英语经典美文阅读 3"Can I see my baby?" the happy new mother asked. When the bundle was nestled in her arms and she moved the fold of cloth to look upon his tiny face, she gasped. The doctor turned quickly and looked out the tall hospital window. The baby had been born without ears.Time proved that the baby's hearing was perfect. It was only his appearance that was marred. When he rushed home from school one day and flung himself into his mother's arms, she sighed, knowing that his life was to be a succession of heartbreaks. He blurted out the tragedy. "A boy, a big boy...called me a freak."He grew up, handsome for his misfortune. A favorite with his fellow students, he might have been class president, but for that. He developed a gift, a talent for literature and music."But you might mingle with other young people," his mother reproved him, but felt a kindness in her heart. The boy's father had a session with the family physician... "Could nothing be done?""I believe I could graft on a pair of outer ears, if they could be procured," the doctor decided. Whereupon the search began for a person who would make such a sacrifice for a young man.Two years went by. One day, his father said to the son, "You're going to the hospital, son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But it's a secret."The operation was a brilliant success, and a new person emerged. His talents blossomed into genius, and school andcollege became a series of triumphs.Later he married and entered the diplomatic service. One day, he asked his father, "Who gave me the ears? Who gave me so much? I could never do enough for him or her.""I do not believe you could," said the father, "but the agreement was that you are not to know...not yet."The years kept their profound secret, but the day did e. One of the darkest days that ever pass through a son. He stood with his father over his mother's casket. Slowly, tenderly, the father stretched forth a hand and raised the thick, reddish brown hair to reveal the mother had no outer ears."Mother said she was glad she never let her hair be cut," his father whispered gently, "and nobody ever thought mother less beautiful, did they?"英语经典美文阅读 4To respect my work, my associates and myself. To be honest and fair with them as I expect them to be honest and fair with me. To be a man whose word carries weight. To be a booster, not a knocker; a pusher, not a kicker; a motor, not a clog.To base my expectations of reward on a solid foundation of service rendered; to be willing to pay the price of success inhonest effort. To look upon my work as opportunity, to be seized with joy and made the most of, and not as painful drudgery to be reluctantly endured. To remember that success lies within myself; in my own brain, my own ambition, my own courage and determination. To expect difficulties and force my way through them, to turn hard experiences into capital for future struggles. To interest my heart and soul in my work, and aspire to the highest efficiency in the achievement of results. To be patiently receptive of just criticism and profit from its teaching. To treat equals and superiors with respect, and subordinates with kindly encouragement. To make a study of my business duties; to know my work from the ground up. To mix brains with my efforts and use system and method in all I undertake. To find time to do everything needful by never letting time find me or my subordinates doing nothing. To hoard days as a miser does dollars, to make every hour bring me dividends in specific results plished. To steer clear of dissipation and guard my health of body and peace of mind as my most precious stock in trade. Finally, to take a good grip on the joy of life; to play the gamelike a gentleman; to fight against nothing so hard as my own weakness, and endeavor to grow in business capacity, and as a man, with the passage of every day of time.英语经典美文阅读 5It seems to me a very difficult thing to put into words the beliefs we hold and what they make you do in your life. I think I was fortunate because I grew up in a family where there was a very deep religious feeling. I don’t think it was spoken of a great deal. It was more or less taken for granted that everybody held certain beliefs and needed certain reinforcements of their own strength and that that came through your belief in God and your knowledge of prayer. But as I grew older I questioned a great many of the things that I knew very well my grandmother who had brought me up had taken for granted. And I think I might have been a quite difficult person to live with if it hadn’t been for the fact that my husband once said it didn’t do you any harm to learn those things, so why not let your children learn them? When they grow up they’ll think things out for themselves. And that gave me a feeling that perhaps that’s what we all must do-think out for ourselves what we could believe and howwe could live by it. And so I came to the conclusion that you had to use this life to develop the very best that you could develop.I don’t know whether I believe in a future life. I believe that all that you go through here must have some value, therefore there must be some reason. And there must be some “going on.” How exactl y that happens I’ve never been able to decide. There is a future-that I’m sure of. But how, that I don’t know. And I came to feel that it didn’t really matter very much because whatever the future held you’d have to face it when you came to it, just as whatever life holds you have to face it exactly the same way. And the important thing was that you never let down doing the best that you were able to do-it might be poor because you might not have very much within you to give, or to help other people with, or to live your life with. But as long as you did the very best that you were able to do, then that was what you were put here to do and that was what you were plishing by being here. And so I have tried to follow that out-and not to worry about the future or what was going to happen. I think I am pretty much of a fatalist. You have to accept whatever es and the only important thing is that you meet it with courage and with the best that you have to give.。

Learn to live in the present momentTo a large degree, the measure of our peace of mind is determined by how much we are able to live on the present moment. Irrespective of what happened yesterday or last year, and what may or may not happen tomorrow, the present moment is where you are---always! 2/Without question, many of us have mastered the neurotic art of spending much of our lives worrying about variety of things--all at once. We allow past problems and future concerns dominate your present moments, so much so that we end up anxious, frustrated, depressed, and hopeless. On the flip side, we also postpone our gratification, our stated priorities, and our happiness, often convincing that "someday" will be much better than today. Unfortunately, the same mental dynamics that tell us to look toward the future will only repeat themselves so that 'someday' never actually arrives. Jhon Lennone once said, "Life is what is happening while we are busy making other plans." When we are busy making 'other plans', our children are busy growing up, the people we love are moving away and dying, our bodies are getting out of shape, and our dreams are slipping away. In short, we miss out on life. 3/Many people lives as if life is a dress rehearsal for some later date. It isn't. In fact, no one have a guarantee that he or she will be here tomorrow. Now is the only time we have, and the only time that we have any control over. When we put our attention on the present moment, we push fear from our minds. Fear is the concern over events that might happen in the future--we won't have enoughh money, our children will get into trouble,we will get old and die,whatever. 4/To combat fear, the best stradegy is to learn to bring your attention back to the present. Mark Twain said,"I have been through some terrible things in life, some of which actually happened." I don't think I can say it any better. Practice keeping your attention on the here and now. Your effort will pay great dividends. 5\How High Can You Jump?Flea trainers have observed a strange habit of fleas while training them. Fleas are trained by putting them in a cardboard box with a top on it. The fleas will jump up and hit the top of the cardboard box over and over and over again. As you watch them jump and hit the lid, something very interesting becomes obvious. The fleas continue to jump, but they are no longer jumping high enough to hit the top. When you take off the lid, the fleas continue to jump, but they will not jump out of the box. They won't jump out because they can't jump out. Why? The reason is simple. They have conditioned themselves to jump just so high.Once they have conditioned themselves to jump just so high, that's all they can do!Many times, people do the same thing. They restrict themselves and never reach their potential. Just like the fleas, they fail to jump higher, thinking they are doing all they can do.
