因此，在推荐信的写作中，首先需要对该信的用途加以了解，以便确定被推荐人是否适合这一职位或是否适合进入某一专业攻读学位或从事研究工作。
推荐信应包括以下内容：① 被推荐人全名；② 推荐人与被推荐人认识时间的长短及其关系,如：(I have been Mr.Bowman’s immediate supervisor for the past six years.);③ 被推荐人的学识及其优秀的品质（最好有具体的事例加以证明）；④ 被推荐人所申请的学校或机构对其感兴趣的理由，总结对被推荐人的信心，并主动提出如有必要的话，可以提供更多的有关被推荐人的资料。

推荐信是向有关单位或个人推荐或介绍有关人、物或地点等的专用书信。
推荐信书写要求如下：
1．说明被推荐者的基本情况。
推荐人时，应包括姓名、性别、年龄、业务水平、工作能力、身体状况等；推荐某物品、地方或去处时，应包含具体位置、如何到达、服务水平、用途等。
2．说明推荐的理由。
要求写得具体、充分。
如实地介绍优点，客观地叙述理由。
如有短处，一定坦诚相告，让对方对被推荐的人或物能有比较全面的了解。
3．语气上要诚恳，既不能自高自大，又不能妄自菲薄。
4．时态一般以现在时为主；如有回顾过去的情况，可以穿插着使用过去时。
