The lion holds the mouse in his paws.“ Please don’t eat me,” she says.The lion let the mouse go.“ Thank you, “ says the mouse.The next day, the lion is caught in a net .He roars for help.The hippo can’t help.The stork can’t help.The elephant can’t help.“ I can help ,” says the mouse.She bites and bites at the net .At last , the lion is free.“ Thank you, “ says the lion.Story08: This is the Register.( Tony Bradman) This is the register, big and black.“ It’s belongs in the office. Please take it back”This is the cat.She miaows and she purrs.“ Shh! Be quiet!” say the two little girls.This is the corridor, quiet and long.This is class 2, singing a song.This is the toilet, with sinks by the wall.This is the library.This is the hall.And back in the classroom, this is class 1. Everyone’s laughing.Why? What’s wrong....?Story 09: Wayne’s Box( John Prater)Wayne finds a big box.He opens it.In the box there’s a bear with a hat!“ Hello, Wayne,” she says.“Put on this magic hat,” says the bear.“ Shut your eyes and make a wish.”“I want to fly!” thinks Wayne.They jump up high and the fly round the room.They run up the walls and they run across the ceiling.They jump through the wall and they jump back again.They fly round the room on the chairs.Then they’re tired.The bear jumps back in the box.Wayne says goodbye to bear.“ Bye, Wayne,” she says.Mum comes in . “ Let’s go for a run, Wayne,” she says.Story 10: Bad boy, Billy!( Gerald Rose)I go into the field for some apples.I forget to shut the gate.Billy runs into the garden.“ Come back, Billy” i shout.“ Don’t eat the clothes!” i shout, but Billy likes socks.“ Bad boy, Billy!”“Shoo!” I shout, “ Go away!”But Billy likes carrots.“ Bad boy, Billy!”Billy runs into the road.“ Don’t eat the letter!” shouts the postman, but Billy likes letters. “ Bad boy, Billy!”Nobody can catch Billy.I run back for the apples.I give an apple to Billy.“ Come on, Billy, “ i say.Billy follows me to the field.This time i shut the gate.“ Good boy, Billy!”Story11 : The Tortoise and the Hare( Gerald Rose)The tortoise says to the hare, “Hello. Can I eat some of your carrot?”The hare says, “ Let’s have a race. The winner can eat the carrot.”“Let’s run to that tree, and then run back here,” he says.“ I can win the race,” says the tortoise.“No, you can’t,” says the hare.The hare runs very fast.The tortoise is very slow.The hare stops. He eats the grass, and he plays.Then he waits for the tortoise.The tortoise comes, and the hare jumps up and runs away.The hare sits down under the tree. He sleeps.The tortoise walks round the tree.The hare wakes up. He can’t see the tortoise.He runs, and runs, and runs.But it’s too late.The tortoise wins the race and he eats the carrot.Story12: The moonlit Owl( Richard Brown)I love Granny’s big old house.Sometimes i got to stay with her.I go to bed, Granny reads to me.Granny says goodnight .An owl hoots outside.I ask Granny, “ Are there badgers in the wood?”Granny says, “ Yes, Let’s look for them tonight.”At night, we walk into the moonlit wood.An owl hoots.We find a hole in a tree.“ The badgers live here,” Granny whispers.We watch and wait for a long time, but no badgers come out. I’m sad. “ I’m tired , Granny,” I say.“Let’s go home now,” she whispers.We go home , I’m sad.I go upstairs to bed.I open the bedroom door and i see.....An owl . There’s an owl at my window.Then it sees us.The owl flies away.Now I’m happy.Story13 : Everyone is Reading ( Juliet Partridge)Mark is reading a plan to make a model plane.Jan is reading her favorite book, again and again and again.Gran is reading a postcard from Cousin Billy’s boat.Pop is reading a catalogue to choose his winter coat.Dad is reading a recipe to make some bread for tea.Claire is reading the paper to see what’s on TV.Everyone is reading, except for little Tim.He’s lying in his bed.Who can read to him?Story 14: Everyone is doing mathsJan is putting sand into a stripy tin.Tim is racing snails to see which snail can swim.Mark is counting money to buy another plane.Dad is weighing flour to make some bread again.Gran is choosing patterns to make a quilt for Jan.Pop is feeling happy that the kennel is like his plan.Claire is doing a jigsaw but she still can’t get it right.Everyone is helping so she isn’t there all night.Story16 : The Gingerbread Man ( Gerald Rose)One day, an old woman makes a gingerbread man.She puts him in the oven.Suddenly, there’s a bang on the oven door.The old woman opens the door, and the gingerbread man jumps out.The old woman runs after the gingerbread man.An old man throws a hat at him.But the gingerbread man runs on .The baker throws a cake at him. But the gingerbread man runs on.The miller throws a sack of flour at him. But the gingerbread man runs on . The farmer throws a carrot at him. But the gingerbread man runs on.The gingerbread man comes to a river and stops , he sees a fox.“ I can help you, “ says the fox. “ Jump on my tail.Stand on my back.Sit on my head.Jump on my nose.Story 17:The Clever Tortoise( Gerald Rose)The elephant says to the tortoise, “ I can stand on you.”The tortoise says , “No, you can’t. I’m strong. I can stop you.”The elephant laughs.“ Look, i’m very strong,” says the tortoise . “ You hold the end of this rope.I can hold the other end of the rope. We can both pull. Then you can see that i’m strong.”The tortoise runs behinds the trees, and picks up the other end of the rope.The tortoise says to the hippo, “ i’m very strong. “The hippo laughs.“ Look,” says the tortoise. “You hold the end of this rope.I can hold the other end of the rope. We can both pull. Then you can see that I’m strong”The tortoise runs into the trees. Then she shouts, “PULL”The elephant pulls and the hippo pulls.The hippo pulls and pulls and pulls.The elephant pulls and pulls and pulls.Snap! He hears a noise in it .It’s a hedgehog!“ Hello!” says the hedgehog.The hedgehog has some paper and some scissors. She says, “ You can have the little scissors and i can have the big scissors.”Billy cuts out a little flower.The hedgehog cuts out a big flower. “ Wow!” says Billy. “ That’s good.”Next , Billy cuts out five trees.The hedgehog cuts out a big forest of trees.“ Wow!” says Billy “ That’s good”“ Come and play in my forest,” says the hedgehog. She holds Billy’s hand and takes him into the forest.They go into the forest.The trees are very big.“ Oh, no!” says Billy. “ We’re lost.
