ASometimes just when we need the power of miracles to change our beliefs, they materialize in the places we’d least expect. They can come to us as a great change in our physical reality or as a simple coincidence in our lives. Sometimes they’re big and can’t be missed. Other times they’re so subtle that if we aren’t aware, we may miss them altogether. They can come from the lips of a stranger we suddenly and mysteriously meet at just the right instant. If we listen carefully, we’ll always hear the right words, at the right time, to dazzle (目眩) us into a realization of something that we may have failed to notice only moments before. On a cold January afternoon in 1989, I was hiking up the trail that leads to the top of Egypt’s Mt. Horeb. I’d spent the day at St. Catherine’s Monastery and wanted to get to the peak by sunset to see the valley below. As I was winding up the narrow path, I’d occasionally see other hikers who were coming down from a day on the mountain. While they would generally pass with simply a nod or a greeting in another language, there was one man that day who did neither.I saw him coming from the last switchback on the trail that led to the backside of themountain. As he got closer, I could see that he was dressed differently from the o ther hikers I’dseen. Rather than the high-tech fabrics and styles that had been the norm, this man was wearing Array traditional Egyptian clothing. He wore a tattered, rust-colored galabia and obviously old and thick-soled sandals that were covered in dust. What made his appearance so odd, though, was that the man didn’t even appear to be Egyptian! He was a small-framed Asian man, had very little hair, and was wearing round, wire-rimmed glasses. As we neared one another, I was the first to speak, “Hello,” I said, stopping on the trail for a moment to catch my breath. Not a sound came from the man as he walked closer. I thought that maybe he hadn’t heard me or the wind had carried my voice away from him in another direction. Suddenly he stopped directly in front of me on the high side of the trail, looked up from the ground, and spoke a single sentence to me in English, “Sometimes you don’t know what you have lost until you’ve lost it.” As I took in what I had just heard, he simply stepped around me and continued his going down the trail. That moment in my life was a small miracle. The reason is less about what the man said and more about the timing and the context. The year was 1989, and the Cold War was drawing to a close. what the man on the trail couldn’t have k nown is that it was during my Egyptian pilgrimage (朝圣), and specifically during my hike to the top of Moses’s mountain, that I’d set the time aside to make decisions that would affect my career in the defense industry, my friends, my family, and, ultimately, my life.I had to ask myself what the chances were of an Asian man dressed in an Egyptian galabia coming down from the top of this historic mountain just when I was walking up, stopping before me, and offering his wisdom, seemingly from out of nowhere. My answer to my own question was easy: the odds were slim to none! In a meet that lasted less than two minutes on a mountain halfway around the world from my home, a total stranger had brought clarity and the hint of a warning, regarding the huge changes that I would make within a matter of days. In my way of thinking, that’s a miracle.I suspect that we all experience small miracles in our lives every day. Sometimes we have the wisdom and the courage to recognize them for what they are In the moments when we don’t, that’s okay as well. It seems that our miracles have a way of coming back to us again and again. And each time they do, they become a little less subtle, until we can’t possibly miss the messagethat they bring to our lives! The key is that they’re everywhere and occur every day for different reasons, in response to Array the different needs that we may have in the moment. Our job may be less about questioning the extraordinary things that happen in our daily lives and more about accepting the gifts they bring.1、Why did the author make a pilgrimage to Mt Horeb in Egypt?A.He was in search of a miracle in his life.B.It was a holy place for a religious person to head for.C.He intended to make arrangements for his life in the future.D.He waited patiently in expectation of meeting a wise person.2、What does the underlined part “my own question” refer to in paragraph 6?A.For what reason did the man stop before me?B.Why did the Asian man go to the mountain?C.What change would I make within a matter of days?D.What was the probability that others told us the right words?3、Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “subtle” in paragraph 7? But such a change in the average world temperature would be a serious problem. Many animals and plants would not be able to deal with these changes, and would die.The UNEP(联合国环境规划署)released the report 2012 on November 21, 2012. It says that if we don’t take action now, the world temperature will have risen by 3 to 5 degrees by the end of this century. The report was written by 55 scientists from 20 countries. Scientists have set a goal for greenhouse gases sending out to limit the world temperature rise to only 2 degrees this century. But according to the report, people have already let out 14 percent more greenhouse gases than they should have done.A large rise in temperatures could be terrible for us and for many other living things on Earth. Sea levels will rise because higher temperatures will cause melting ice to flow into the sea. Large coastal cities in countries such as the Netherlands and Bangladesh could be flooded. Some plants such as corn and sugarcane will not grow well in higher temperatures. Some countries, such as Brazil and parts of Africa, will not have enough food. The change may cause less rain and even make some places very dry.On November 26, people from around 200 nations and regions gathered again in Doha for the annual UN climate talks. “Climate change is coming to all human beingsand effective action needs to be taken to deal with it.” President of the conference said at the opening ceremony.正误判断.对的写T错的写F( T ) 56. AIf humans pump enough carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, the stratocumulus clouds(层积云) could disappear, and the earth's temperature could climb sharply to heights not predicted in current climate models. It would burn the planet. That's the conclusion of a paper published in the journal Nature Geoscience and described in detail by Natalie Wolchover for Quanta Magazine. As Wolchover explained, clouds have long been one of the great uncertainties of climate models. Computer models that easily capture the complexity and detail of most climate systems just aren't powerful enough to predict worldwide changes in cloud behavior. But clouds are important. They reflect sunlight away from the earth's surface. And stratocumulus clouds are those white blankets you might have seen as you looked out the window of arm airplane, rolling out below you and hiding the ground Researchers suspect that certain sudden, past jumps intemperature may have been caused by changes to clouds like these. For the new research, scientists modeled just a small patch of sky using a supercomputer. Array They found that if carbon dioxide levels reach about 1, 200 parts per million(ppm) in the atmosphere, stratocumulus clouds break up. That's a very high carbon dioxide concentration. Right now, levels have climbed past 410 ppm--a dangerous change from 280 ppm before the Industrial Revolution. But humans put more and more CO2 into the atmosphere every year. If current trends continue, the earth could reach 1, 200 ppm within 100 to 150 years. This could happen if our society doesn't follow through on any of its commitments to reduce emissions(排放), Wolchover reported. And even if it does, the result would be another 8 degrees Celsius of heat added to the global average, on top of the dangerous changes already underway due to greenhouse gases. That’s an enormous change, and it goes beyond predictions of worldwide ice melt and catastrophic sea level rise. And, once the stratocumulus clouds are gone, Wolchover reported, they likely wouldn't reappear until atmospheric carbon dioxide levels dropped below where they are currently. There's still some uncertainty in the data. AThree divers enter a hole leading to a water-f illed cave on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. They swim for an hour. Finally, they reach a large room 60 feet underground and about the size of two basketball courts. Here, they discover an upside-down human skull (the bones of a person’s head). Other bones lay nearby. The team came across the skull in 2007. The divers then told the Mexican government about the finding. Soon the government formed a team of scientists to look into it. The group, which included archaeologist (考古学家) Dominique Rissolo, believed that the skull belonged to someone who lived in the last ice age. At the ice age’s height some twenty thousand years ago, sea levels dropped and new land appeared. Over time, rain and wind ate holes into some of the land.“The person may have died after entering the cave,” Rissolo says. Then, when the ice age ended some ten thousand years ago, sea levels rose. Water flooded the cave, covering theremains.Worrying that moving the skull might destroy it, scientists decided to examine it at its Array watery resting place. They collected information about the skull and other pieces of bones. They found that the bones belonged to a 15- to 17-year-old girl who lived at least twelve thousand years ago. The team named her Naia after some sea creatures in Greek myths.Naia is the oldest nearly complete human skeleton (骨架) ever found in the Americas. DNA tests showed that she’s a direct ancestor of present-day Native Americans. Naia’s DNA also matches with people native to Siberia, a part of Russia. Scientists have long thought that ancient people from this area arrived in Alaska during the last ice age. They were the first humans to live in the Americas. And Naia proves how far south they went. (Mexico is a country to the south of the US.)In 2014 the scientists decided to bring up Naia’s skull from the cave to protect it from curious divers. So it was taken to a lab, where it remains today.1、What do we learn about the skull?A.It was left alone in the cave.B.It lay under a basketball court.C.It drew the government’s attention.D.It was discovered by three scientists.2、When did Naia probably live?A.After the last ice age ended.B.Before the last ice age ended.C.Before the last ice age started.D.At the beginning of the last ice age.3、Why was the skull studied in the cave for several years?A.Scientists tried to protect it.B.The temperature was fine in there.C.It was against the law to take it out.D.It would help scientists study the cave,4、Who were Naia’s distant ancestors?A.Early humans in Greece.B.Early humans in Siberia.C.Early humans in Alaska. Array D.Early humans in Mexico.BEncouraging life to bloom(兴旺) in the middle of a desert is no easy task. But one company in the United Arab Emirates has come up with a plan to provide drinking water for the state’s citizens. The company intends to drag icebergs from Antarctica to the gulf coast in order to harvest its freshwater. The company plans to source the massive blocks of ice from Heard Island, around 600 miles off the coast of mainland Antarctica. It will then transport them around 5,500 miles to Fujarirah, one part of the UAE. One iceberg could provide enough water for one million people over five years, according to the company. The company’s director says they have already travelled the transportation route and checked the possibility of the scheme, according to reports in Gulf News. Speaking to the site about what he is calling the UAE Iceberg Project, Abdullah Mohammad Sulaiman Al Shehi said, “We have made the technical and financial plan. We will start the project at the beginning of 2018. We want it mainly for the water. It could also be good for tourism and the weather.”The UAE is one of the driest countries in the world, due to its extremely arid climate, which receives less than four inches of rainfall per year. Despite that, it consumes more water than double the global national average, putting the country at severe risk of droughts over the next 25 years. An average iceberg contains more than 20 billion gallons of water, according to the company. The iceberg takes a long time to melt as 80 percent of it is underwater, while the white ice above reflects sunlight and deflects(使转向) its heat. Blocks of ice will be placed in giant tanks, before being processed. “This is the purest water in the world.” Mr. Al Shehi added.1、What can we learn about the UAE project?A.It will help the UAE harvest freshwater.B.It will encourage life to boom in Antarctica.C.It will put the UAE at severe risk of droughts.D.It will completely change the climate in the UAE.2、Where could the block of ice come from? AWhen was the last time you told someone they inspire you to go to work each morning?Teachers at Oak Park High School in Kansas City, Missouri, did just that this September, when they pulled individual students out of class to tell them just how much they appreciated them. The students’ reactions, which were captured (捕捉) on video and shared on YouTube in a now-viral video, ranged from shy thanks to hugs and tears.“I have been challenged to find a student who makes me want to come to school every day,” says one teacher in the video, “and that’s you.”Jamie McSparin, a teacher in charge of the sch ool’s academy program for at-risk sophomores (二年级学生)and juniors, posed the challenge, writes ABC News.“Initially when we pulled the kids out, they all thought they were in trouble,” McSparin told ABC News. “Any teacher-student interaction always seems to be negative (消极的), and that was something that bothered me, too. No matter if they’re a good kid or a trouble maker or anything, they always thought they were in trouble,” she says.McSparin says she got the idea for the project after attending a professional developmentworkshop this summer called the power of positivity. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has towork against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increasesresistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase Array your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but if you sit for long periods of time it’s important that you take note of how long you have your legs crossed for. You shouldn’t have your legs crossed for more than 15 minutes, and it’s important that you get up and walk around at least once every hour.Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, it’s best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor, but it’s not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic bones to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck. You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get tingly or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.1、Crossing legs when sitting may cause the following except______.A.blood pressure increase B.neck and back painC.temporary nerve damage D.numbness in the legs2、Which of the following is true?A.All people are used to sitting with legs crossed without their own notice. B.Researchers are unaware of health problems caused by the common sitting habit.C.It is crucial but impossible to get into the habit of sitting with feet planted flat. D.Crossing legs increases resistance of blood circulation throughout the body.3、After reading this passage, what will people be more likely to do?A.Maintain a healthy sitting posture B.Find a comfortable way to sitC.Move the neck to ease discomfort D.Do exercises to lower blood pressure面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项.完形填空阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
