Scene First Student Film FestivalBSometimes in the next century, the familiar early newspaper on the front porch will disappear. And instead of reading your newspaper, it will read to you. You’ll get up and turn on the computer newspaper just like switching on the TV. An electronic voice will distribute stories about the latest events, guided by a program that selects the type of news you want. You’ll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own personal computer if you like. These are among the predictions from communication experts working on the newspaper of the future. Pictured as part of broader home-based media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers would unite print and broadcast reporting, offering news and analysis with video images of news events. Most of the technology is available now, but convincing more people that they don’t need paper to read a newspaper is the next step. But resistance to computer newspapers may be s tronger from within journalism. Since it is such a cultural change, it may be that the present generation of journalists and publishers will have to die off before the next generation realizes that the newspaper industry is no longer a newspaper industry. Technology is making the end of traditional newspapers unavoidable.Despite technological advances, it could take decades to replace news-print with computer screens. It might take 30 to 40 years to complete the change over because people need to buy c omputers and because newspapers have established financial interests in the paper industry.61. The best title for this passage is .A. Computer Newspapers Are Well LikedB. Newspapers of the Future Will Likely Be on ComputersC. Paper Newspapers Are out of FashionD. Communications Technology in the Future62. It might take 30 or 40 years for computer newspapers to replace traditional newspapers because .A. it is technologically impossible nowB. computer newspapers are too expensiveC. both the general people and professional journalists are against themD. traditional newspapers are easy to read63. Which of the following is NOT an advantage of computer newspapers?A. They are cheaper than newspapers.B. They are convenient to use.C. You can get more information from them quickly.D. You can easily save information for future use.64. The reason why journalists are not eager to accept computer newspapers is that .A. they don’t know how to use computersB. they think computer newspapers take too much time to readC. they are afraid that they might be unfit for their jobsD. they have bee n trained to work for traditional newspapers65. We can infer from the passage that .A. all technological changes are goodB. all technologies will eventually replace old onesC. new technologies will replace old ones sooner or laterD. traditional newspapers will stay for another centuryCToday, when there are many top graduates looking for top jobs, graduates can differentiate(区别) themselves by obtaining a double major or even a double degree. Increasingly, employers are looking for individuals who are not only competent and intelligent, but who have different skill sets and who are knowledgeable in many areas. Part of the appeal to employers is that your extra work demonstrates a willingness to take on difficult tasks. Additionally, if your majors overlap (重叠), you are able to show potential employers that you have both breadth and depth of knowledge.By studying for a double major, although you will be studying for only one degree, you will be focusing on two related and integrated subjects that complement (补充) each other. Classes overlap between the majors, meaning fewer classes are required than with a double degree, so it is easier to finish within four years. In contrast, with the more rigorous (严格的) double degree, you will be studying for two different degrees in two completely different areas of study. Although pursuing such a course of study allows students to complete two wholly separate degrees in less time than if they were to earn them separately, many strong students still find it incredibly difficult to complete in four or five years. If you are committed to a double major/degree, it is wise to do a little bit of planning. Some students try to find two courses of studies that are related, while others seek to round out their academic studies by choosing two completely unrelated fields. For double majors, common pairings include: (i) economics and a foreign language; (ii) political science or government and journalism; (iii) economics and psychology. For double degrees, common pairings include: (i) engineering and a business program such as finance or accounting; (ii) engineering and economics.66. What do employers think of the graduates with different skill sets and knowledge in many areas?A. They should be given top jobs.B. They are willing to take difficult tasks.C. They are better than those who are competent and intelligent.D. They must have attained a double major or even a double degree.67. According to the passage, the underlined word “breadth”most probably means_________.A. widthB. amountC. quantityD. quality68. To obtain a double major, you _________.A. should complete two wholly separate degreesB. need to focus on two related and integrated subjectsC. need to spend more time than obtaining a double degreeD. have to take courses in two completely different areas of study69. If you are devoted to a double major or degree, you should _________.A. find two subjects with overlapping classesB. learn about what your potential employers wantC. decide what to learn with your intentions consideredD. try to decide on some common pairings as soon as possible70. Which statement is CORRECT according to the passage?A. Economics is a major while engineering is a degree.B. Every college student should take a double major or degree.C. Earning a double degree is more difficult than obtaining a double major.D Some students choose two completely unrelated fields to show their ability in academic study.PART FOUR WRITING (45 marks)SECTION A (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Complete the diagram by using the information for the passage. Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer. There are two types of people in the world.Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy, while the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied.By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend(hurt)many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation. It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes.I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.Though in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success.Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrong doings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact withthem.Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.Types of People Differences (71)___________________The happy Fixing theirattention on the(72)__________of things Equal degree of health and wealth and other(73) of lifeThe unhappy Think and speak only of the (74)things.(75)about the unhappy Situation (77)(79) ____Souring thepleasure of society●Growing into ahabit●Having bad effects ontheir interests andtastes●Nobody loves them●No one treats themwith politeness and(78)●Change this bad(80) _______●Be pleased wi thwhat is pleasing●Don’t worryneedlessly aboutthemselves andothers(76)_many peopleMaking themselvesdisagreeableSection B (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and required words limit..JACKSONVILIE, Fla, Nov.10—A 14-year –old boy was arrested today after the rotten body of an 8-year-old girl who was his neighbor was found in his bedroom. She had been stabbed (刺伤) and beaten. The boy, Joshua Earl Patrick Philips, admitted and was charged with murder in the death of the girl, Maddie Clifton, who disappeared on Nov. 3, Sherriff Nat Glover said.Joshua, who has no criminal record, would not be eligible (合格的) for the death punishment because of his age. Detectives discovered a knife and a baseball bat believed to be the weapons (武器) used to kill the girl, Sherriff said. The girl had been stabbed at least nine times and was struck in the head. Sheriff Glover said at the conference. The authorities did not say whether she had been attacked sexually, nor did they give motive for the attack. The boy’s mother , Melissa Phillips , grew suspicious for the police searched her home on Monday and detected an odor (气味) , Sherriff said. This morning she pulled aside the frame of the bed , saw a child’s feet and called an officer, she said. Maddie’s body was found under a sheet of wood supporting the frame of the water bed , which wa s filled, Sheriff Glover said , adding , “ He put her under the bed and tapped her up in it..”Investigators believe the third-grader was killed in the boy’s house shortly after she disappeared last Tuesday, touching off a wide-spread search. On Friday, Maddie’s parents , Steve and Shelia Clifton, made an earnest request for her return. The boy’s house, like others in the neighborhood, had been searched three times. During the third search on Monday, the mother has at first said she thought the odor came from family pets.Hundreds of volunteers had sent thousands of leaflets with Naddie’s picture since she disappeared that evening, about 30 minutes after she went out to play with friends. The girl’s house is one of the well-kept, single –family homes in the older working-class of Jacksonville. Yellow ribbons (丝带) still hung from the trees this morning.81. Yet what should we do in order to achieve success? Here are some suggestions.First, it’s very important to have a right attitude, for a normal state of mind and self-confidence not only helps us to relax but also enables us to overcome difficulties bravely. Meanwhile, we should have a definite goal and a correct estimation of ourselves. Only in this way will we not be easily pleased or disappointed with what we have known and done. Kelly, Dora or Obama. These people are great in their own rights(凭他们自身的努力), but that‘s not enough reason to spend your time living out a life just trying to be an image of 38 person. This same question is not just limited to kids and teens; ask adults and they‘d a lso tell you they want to be like Bill Gates or Ellen Sirleaf Johnson. We live in a world in which people are from different backgrounds. Some are born with silver spoons and others with no spoon at all. We live in a world of 39 and solutions, obstacles and stepping-stones, depending on where you are looking. Most of us spend our time and energy 40 shoes to fit into, leaving ours behind, trying to live life and 41 the way our role models do. It‘s good but that‘s not the chief factor that w e‘d be like them, because we‘d be surprised that we‘ll fall short of our expectations if we spend much energy 42 the wind. I wouldn‘t want your book to be 45 with how so-so and s o is but rather how ―I am‖. For as you go around trying out people‘s 46 , who‘s going to try yours? Kids knew not to go into his yards to pick apples, because old Dawson, they said, would come after you with his gun.One Friday, 12-year-old Janet was walking out with her friend Amy. They had to go byDawson‘s house, but as they got close Janet saw him sitting on his front porch and suggested they cross over the street. Like most, she was scared of the old man.Amy said not to worry. When they got close enough, Dawson looked up with his usual frown(皱眉), but when he saw it was Amy, he gave a big smile.Amy smiled back and told him Janet was staying overnight with her and they were going to listen to music and play games. Dawson told them that sounded fun, and gave them each an apple. Later, Janet asked Amy, ―Everyone says he‘s the meanest man in town. How come he was so nice to us?‖Amy explained that when she first started walking past his house he wasn‘t very friendly, but she pretended he was wearing an invisible smile and so she always smiled. It took a while, but one day he half smiled back. After a while, he started smiling real smiles and then talked to her. She said he always offers an apple now, and is always very kind.If we remember that everyone wears an invisible smile, we too will find that most peoplecan‘t resist our kindness after a while. We are always busy trying to achieve so much that we forget how simply we can bring cheer to ourselves and others. Giving a smile takes so little effort; let‘s make sure that we‘re not the ones that others have to pretend are wearing invisible smile56. Why didn't kids enter Mr. Dawson‘s yard?A. The gate was kept locked.B. Mr. Dawson never smiled.C. They would make trouble.D. Mr. Dawson treated them badly.57. Janet suggested walking on the other side of the street to ______.A. meet some other friendsB. find out where Mr. Dawson wasC. avoid passing by Mr. Dawson‘s houseD. see what Mr. Dawson was doing.58. What did Mr. Dawson do when he saw Amy?A. He smiled on her.B. He forced an invisible smile.C. He came after her with his gun.D. He frowned as usual.59. Janet couldn‘t understand why _______.A. Amy was kind to Mr. DawsonB. Mr. Dawson was so friendlyC. Mr. Dawson was so mean.D. Amy was not afraid of Mr. Dawson60. The main idea of the last paragraph is that _______.A. smiling is not difficult at allB. smiling can make our life differentC. we should bring more smiles to othersD. we should wear invisible smilesBIn the recent past there have been a number of amazing innovations in the world of 3D entertainment, from movie theater technology to what we see at home, to highly developedgames. As time goes by and the technology becomes more and more affordable, it seems likely that viewing images with 3D glasses could become a part of day-to-day life for many. Now researchers say that might not be a good thing, as the dangers of 3D glasses come to light in research.3D glasses can reportedly be very unhygienic(不卫生的). Health officials in Italy recently confiscated (没收) 3D glasses that they claimed posed health risks because the 3D glasses weren‘t cleaned properly between screenings. The other more obvious dangers of 3D glasses remain. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have found that viewing 3D movies with 3D glasses can strain the eyes by changing the relationship between the eyes and the brain. This can result in headaches and blurred vision, and it seems that the problem is particularly troubling for young children. Those who do experience these kinds of painful side effects should limit their 3D viewing, as long-term results haven‘t been found. It seems certain that more expensive 3D glasses give you a better 3D experience, as cheaper glasses can create some shadowing. Getting a new pair of disposable(一次性的) glasses at the screening of a movie may be more hygienic, yet there is little evidence to prove whether high-quality 3D glasses are better for your vision and health in the long run. What should be done about the dangers of 3D? Well, the headaches and dizziness that some viewers experience can be reduced simply by lessening the amount of time spent using 3D technology, and those who experience the effects for a long period of time should consult their doctors.61. What is the text mainly about?A. The recent innovations in 3D entertainment.B. The dangers of viewing images with 3D glasses.C. How to choose 3D glasses properly.D. How to prevent the harm of 3D glasses.62. Health officials in Italy confiscated 3D glasses because ________.A. they were believed to be unhealthyB. they were too expensiveC. they were not of high qualityD. they were used too much63. What can we learn from the second paragraph?A. 3D glasses pose no threat to adults.B. The dangers of 3D glasses are not obvious.C. The side effects of 3D glasses can disappear quickly.D. Children should be especially cautious about using 3D glasses.64. We can infer from the third paragraph 3D glasses of high quality ______.A. pose no danger to your healthB. improve your eyesightC. are not necessarily safeD. are more hygienic65. How can we prevent the dangers of 3D?A. Limit the time of watching with 3D glasses.B. Wear high-quality 3D glasses.C. Clean 3D glasses now and then.D. Keep a distance from the screen.CDo you know what your child is going to do when the school bell rings at the end of the day? More than 14 million students leave school every afternoon and have nowhere to go, since they do not have access to affordable after-school opportunities. According to the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center(NYVPRC), nine out of ten Americans think all youths should have access to after-school programs, but two-thirds of parents say they have trouble finding programs locally. The bad news is that the situation may be getting worse.After-school hours are the peak time for juvenile crimes and risky behaviors, including alcohol and drug use. The NYVPRC states that children who do not spend any time in after-school activities are 49 percent more likely to use drugs and 37 percent more likely to become a teen parent. Kids are also at the highest risk of becoming a victim of violence after school, particularly between the hours of 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The highest amount of juvenile crime occurs between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., when most children are dismissed from school. The NYVPRC defines after-school programs as safe and structured activities that offer children opportunities to learn new skills. The skills students learn can range from technology and math to reading and art. Some programs also offer opportunities for internship(实习), community service, or mentoring. These programs have been shown to improve academic achievement, as well as relieve the stresses on working families. A report by the U. S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Justice shows that students in after-school programs have fewer behavioral problems and more self-confidence, and can handle conflicts better than students who are not involved with these programs. In addition, according to the Harvard Family Research Project, after-school programs help students from low-income families overcome the inequities(不公平) they face in the school system.66. What is the theme of the passage?A. Prevention of juvenile crimes.B. Risks kids face after school.C. A research report on the stresses of students.D. The benefits of after-school programs.67. Which of the following is TRUE according to the first paragraph?A. Most parents don't believe in after-school programs.B. Students are not willing to attend after-school programs.C. It is difficult for parents to find after-school programs for their kids.D. Parents don't care about where their kids go after school.68. We learn from the second paragraph that ______.A. the teachers should watch over kids after schoolB. children are dismissed from school too lateC. after-school hours are a risky time for childrenD. children should go home immediately school is over69. The author of the passage probably _______.A. fully supports after-school programsB. doubts the effects of after-school programsC. believes structured activities are useless for childrenD. thinks students today are too stressed70. The underlined word ―juvenile‖ in paragraph has a similar meaning to ―_______‖.A. studentB. teenagerC. adultD. campus Part Ⅳ: WritingSection A (10分)Directions: Read the following passage. Complete the diagram by using the information for the passage. Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer.Experiencing bad dreams every night can be horrifying for anybody. Bad dreams can disturb the sleep and make a person feel stressed throughout the next day. That‘s why one should take steps to stop them as soon as they become an everyday occurrence. Before knowing how to get rid of bad dreams, we need to understand what can result in them. Researches have shown that when a person is under some sort of physical or mental stress, he is more likely to get bad dreams and disturbed sleep. So, to stop bad dreams, it‘s necessary to find out the causes of physical and mental stress in your li fe and remove these. For instance, if you‘re overworked, learn to take things slow. Don‘t be ambitious to the point that it starts affecting your health.Besides, some trauma(损伤) that a person might have experienced recently or in the past which they‘re un able to get over can make the person suffer from bad dreams. Death of a very close family member is often seen to be the reason behind recurrent nightmares. In such a case, taking therapy and dealing with the trauma is the only solution to stop bad dreams.Eating fatty and high-protein foods in dinner is also known to cause bad dreams in some people. So, bad dreams occurring because of these reasons can be stopped if the diet is changed. Taking a light dinner of soups and salad is the best, both for the health and for stopping disturbed sleep in some cases.Besides these, there are many other things a person can do to have a good night‘s sleep. For example, your bedroom should be the most comfortable place in the world. So, get rid of all electronic gadgets including television. In addition, if you have negative thoughts, it can have side effects on the kind of dreams you have. So, from now on try to be a happy and positive person.Title: Bad DreamsSection C (25分)Directions: Write an English composition according to the instructions given below in Chinese.某英文报正在就建立良好的师生关系这一话题进行讨论。

The research also showed that a large percentage of women started noticing the pounds creeping back on just 21 days after reaching their ideal weight.Yesterday, Dr Ian Campbell of the Jenny Craig Weight Management Program said: “In the UK 61.4 per cent of adults are overweight or obese. Successful weight management requires a long-term commitment in order to lose weight successfully and for good. Dieting can be a real challenge so setting realistic goals and remaining focused on them is important. Otherwise as this research shows, women could end up heavier than when they started.”The “Food, Body, Mind” report was publicized by Jenny Craig who quizzed 2,000 women aged between 18 and 65 who diet regularly on their attitudes, beliefs and behaviors around weight loss. Six in ten said they were on a diet then and one in five women said they were on a “continuous diet”.It found the most common triggers to start dieting was seeing their “reflection in the mirror”,preparing for a summer holiday or unflattering photos posted on social networking sites. Other popular reasons include comments by friends or relatives or their other half. However, the study showed that one in ten give up within one day, while almost a fifth manage to make it to a week or more. The average is ten days. Many blamed pressure they put on themselves to lose weight too quickly for the weight gain, which leaves them with a bigger appetite than normal. Others blamed colleagues, who tuck into fatty lunches and snacks unaware of the effect it has on the dieter, while mothers’ polishing off their children’s leftovers(剩饭)was another common cause of weight gain.24.Which of the following might be the best title for this article?A.Three reasons to fail in dietingB.Important things for successful dietC.Obesity—a problem for 61.4% adults in the UKD.Four in ten women gain weight on diets25.Women who go on a diet ________.A.are all overweight or obeseB.are likely to gain weight again after reaching their ideal weightC.all fail because they are not persistent enoughD.all end up heavier than when they start to diet26.The underlined word “triggers” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.A.effects B.examplesC.causes D.imagination27.Which of the following is NOT the reason that many people quit dieting very soon?A.The pressure they put on themselves to lose weight quickly.B.Colleagues who give them fatty lunches and snacks.C.Reflections they see in the mirror.D.Leftovers of children’s taken by their mothers.28.In which column of the newspaper do you probably find the passage?A.Health.
