Nothing is easy ifyou don’t try your best.We often hear people say, “Never give up.” This can be encouragingwords and words of determination. A person who believes in them will keeptrying to reach his goal no matter how many times he fails. In my opinion, the quality of determination to succeed is an important one to have. Therefore, I believe that we should never give up.One reason is that if we give up too easily, we will rarely achieveanything. It is not unusual for us to fail in our first attempt at somethingnew, so we should not feel discouraged and should try again. Besides, ifwe always give up when we fail, we will not be able to develop new skillsand grow as people. Another reason we should never give up is that we canlearn from our mistakes only if we make a new effort. If we do not tryagain, the lesson we have learned is wasted. Finally, we should never giveup because as we work to reach our goals, we develop confidence, and thisconfidence can help us succeed in other areas of our lives.Probably the greatest example of persistence is Abraham Lincoln. Borninto poverty, Lincoln was faced with defeat throughout his life. He losteight elections, twice failed in business and suffered a nervousbreakdown. He could have quit many times - but he didn't and because he didn'tquit, he became one of the greatest presidents in the history of ourcountry.Lincoln was a champion and he never gave up.In short, it is important that we don’t give up when working for ourgoals. Whether we succeed in the end or not, we will learn something, andwhat we learn will help us to become better, more confident people.Furthermore, if we give up, we have no chance of attaining our goals, butif we keep trying, there is always a chance that we will succeed oneday.Thank you very much!5分钟英语演讲稿 (3) Ladies and gentlemen ,Good evening ,I am joy and glad to give you a speech about stress ,yes , just the topic you see on the screen.Psychologist tell us that stress is a state of worry caused by theproblem of living , such as too much work or study , heavy responsibilities ,and quickened pace of life .Statistics show that stress comes from everydetail in our life .Financial problems , poor health , being laid off maybe the stress that most adults now suffering .As students in theuniversity , we are also under our special stress .While study , having to take various tests and submit a project againsta deadline may put a great pressure on us .And the things make us feltstressed may be our parents’s greater expectations on us than we couldreach .Later , when we are likely to graduate , some other problems willalso annoy us .I think we will worry a lot about our ability to compete in the jobmarket and how we can best use what we’ve learned at college in our futurejob .The chief problem we should face to is our atitude towardsstress .people usually say they can not live in the sun except they escapefrom stress .It’s unwelcome ! yes , however , very necessary .Just imagea world where stress does not exist and people lead their life in a verycomfortable way .But is this kind of living condition as perfect as wehope ?without stress , they may feel very satisfied with the current lifebut lack of power to discover new things .Too much satisfaction resultin nothing except a countermarch of the society .No stress , nodevelopment .So a certain amount of stress is good .It can stimulate us and increase our level of alertness .And our answerto stress is another vital problem .How to do with ourselves when stresssuddenly break into our life ? to wave the white flag and admit ourunability , to give up to our ideality , or worstly , just to suicide asto put an end to everything …of cause not .The principle is to tackle with stress gentlely and harmoniously. We should try our best to release ourselves .Such as to do some exercise , to linsen to traditional chinese musicor classical music to ease our minds and to learn to view these changesof life as challenges .it’s no use crying over spilt milk .Only to acceptwhat has happened can solve the problem .Ok , i think i was under large stress 3 minutes before , but now iam here and have finished my speech .5分钟英语演讲稿 (4) I"ll tell you an experience of myself happened last week. lastthursday our school was tackling something about woking fou study. iwanted to have a try even though i knew the salary was so low and i hadlittle chance, because the students who had the certificate were alwaysthought to have priority to get the job. fortunately i was called at noonand a teacher said to me that she wanted me to work for her and asked ifi could change my mind.At that moment i was so excited that immediately i accepted her idea.but later on,she found me that i"m not a student,so i had little chanceand suggest me to get one. then an idea occurred to me that i could callmy father and ask him to send me the letter. at the same time i was toldthat i was admitted to the job and don"t need the certificate. that timei forgot to remind my father, until the next day he called me that he hadposted it and it would arrive in just one day.At that moment i was moved, and even moved into tears, because i knewmy father was injured not long before, the process of helping me with theaffairs was not so convenient for him. but he tried his best to help me.sometimes we may complain about unsatisfying things around us,and blamethem on our parents, sometimes they"ll be angry with us, and sometimes wecan"t quite understand what they are thinking about. but on balance, almost every parent is selfless to his or her child. They are ready to offer everything to us when we are in bad situation.we used to sharing sorrow with them, but do not forget to share ourhappiness with them, perhaps they will be much happier than we are. sofrom now on, let"s care more about our parents and do not leave pity tothem. that"s what i want to tell you today. thank you!5分钟英语演讲稿 (5)I feel that this award was not made to me as a man but to my work --a life's work in the agony and sweat of the human spirit not for gloryand least of all for profit but to create out of the materials of the humanspirit something which did not exist before.我感觉,这个奖不是授予我这个人,而是授予我的工作,它是对我呕心沥血、毕生从事的人类精神探索的工作的肯定。

英语作文演讲稿(优秀6篇)英语作文演讲稿篇一I am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. What is success? It is what everyone is longing for. Sometimes success would be rather simple. Winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the exam is success; making a new friend is success; even now I am standing here giving my speech is somehow also success. However, as a person;s whole life is concerned, success becomes very complicated. Is fortune success? Is fame success? Is high social status success? No, I don;t think so. I believe success is the realization of people;s hopes and ideals. Nowadays, in the modern society there are many people who are regarded as the successful. And the most obvious characteristics of hem are money, high position and luxurious life. So most people believe that s success and all that they do is for this purpose. But the problem is wether it is real success. We all know there are always more money, higher position and better condition in front of us. If we keep chasing them, where is the end? What will satisfy us at last? Therefore, we can see, to get the real Success we must need something inside, which is the realization of people; hopes and ideals.Different people have different ideas about success; cause people;s hopes and ideas vary from one another. But I am sure every success is dear to everybody, cause it is not easy to come by, cause in the process of our striving for success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of responsibility. These are the best treasures. So now I am very proud that I have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. It is my success, cause I raise up to challenge my hope. What is success? Everyone has his own interpretation as I do. But I am sure every success leads to an ever-brighter future. So ladies and gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every one of us, can make a successful life!Wish you all good success!英语作文演讲稿篇二good morning ladies and gentlemen:the title of my speech today is “the doors that are open to us ”。

The college students are the beneficiaries of a rare privilege, who receive exceptional education at extraordinary places. But will we be able to face the challenge and support ourselves against all odds? Will we be able to better the lives of others? Will we be able to accept the responsibility of building the future of our country? The cynics say the college students are the pampered lost generation, which would cringe at the slightest discomfort. But the cynics are wrong. The college students I see are eagerly learning about how to live independently. We help each other clean the dormitory, go shopping and bargain together, and take part time jobs to supplement our pocket money. The cynics say we care for nothing other than grades; and we neglect the need for character cultivation. But again, the cynics are wrong. We care deeply for each other, we cherish freedom, we treasure justice, and we seek truth. Last week, thousands of my fellow students had their blood type tested in order to make a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer. As college students, we are adolescents at the critical turning point in our lives. We all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our future, or even the future of our country. I believe in all my fellow classmates. Though we are still inexperienced and even a little bit childish. I believe that we have the courage and faith to meet any challenge and take on our responsibilities. We are preparing to assume new responsibilities and tasks, and to use the education we have received to make our world a better place. I believe in our future.。

英语演讲稿6分钟篇一Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. It is myhonor to be here to present my speech to you about the role of humanism in today’s technologically advanced world. What’s the role of humanism today? At the first sight of this topic, I felt that I had a vision of walking along a dark passage to our destination, an ideal harmonious society. Humanism, is a lighthouse on this way to guide us in case we are getting lost, together with modern technology, we are well on our way toward our destination.Like other young men, I love the internet. To be honest, I could not imagine a life without internet, which is a blessing taken by high technology. To some extent, it represents the whole world to me. I have registered some accounts on MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Ren ren, Weibo and so forth. It’s really amazing because these network technologies make it possiblefor people all over the world to municate with each other freely and conveniently. However, there are two sides to the argument, so what of the internet. While it could lighten our life, it could also turn into evil. It started with some of these arguments—well, it is argument at first—then the situation seems out of control: people start to curse and scold each other just because they have different opinions. People became more and more aggressive, seditious, and insulting, and later on, with the “Human-flesh searching” involved, the situation gets even worse. Those are what we called “Network of violence”, they are still happening, and still going on.It seems like that the internet frees us from the burden of our public identities so we should be our true, authentic selves online, except it turns out—who wouldn’t see that ing—that our true, authentic selves aren’t that fantastic. The reason we define ourselves as human is because we have some natural instincts to care for and respect other people. In other words, we are pursuing the universal brotherhood, a peaceful world of free minds. It is humanism that keeps our society moving on and on.As one of the most important inventions in our time, internet has changed the way of our life tremendously. It has changed the way we express and municate with each other. It has made it possible for us to meet each other without distance; it has made it easier for us to know and to prehend each other. However not only some changes has it brought, but also brought on some challenges. Net has anarchy inits DNA, It’s always been about anonymity, playing with your own identity and messing with otherpeople’s heads. It is a challenge, it challenges our self-discipline that we are proud of, it challenges our humanity that we are proud of. Sure technology promises us more freedom but it doesn’t mean that we should leave our civilization behind. That’s why we need a guide line to light up our path, to lead us. In this technologically advanced world, what we need to do is to avoid the misuse of technology, but to take it as an accelerator, a lube or a navigator on our high way to create a better world, a harmonious society. So don’t ever forget our aspiration, and always have faith in humanism, and we are going to make it happen, in this technologically advanced world! Yes! We can!Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.英语演讲稿6分钟篇二Good morning/afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.Consider the lowly toilet. Many of you may not think of the toilet as a form of technology if you think of toilets at all. But, it is and has contributed greatly to the improved health and overall quality of life for mankind. On a recent trip to Japan, I was impressed by, among other things, a gadget in most public women's restrooms, called Otohime or Sound Princess. This device produces the sound of flushing water without the need for actual flushing. The technology saves the user both the embarrassment of being heard during urination and some 20 liters of water per use in cases where a woman might flush the toilet continuously while using it.Every time I used Otohime, I felt like a princess, an environmentalist princess on the toilet. It was a longed for feeling. Over the past decade, I shuffled in and out of many kinds of public restrooms in China--filthy smelly water closets in outlying areas, spacious luxurious lavatories in five-star hotels, forever-occupied girls' stalls on campus during school, and smart modern mobile toilets in international fairs. But not one single "room" evoked my pride of being a princess. And I knew why the Sound Princess had. It was not because of the high technology the small bathroom boasted which is being ubiquitous worldwide. It was the idealism embodied in the technology that keeps reminding me that in this ever-changing world, I am a responsible and dignified human being even whensitting on a toilet.Humanism, no matter how it is defined, aims to strike a balance between us being at the mercy ofnature and being too human-centered. In my case, I haven't relieved myself under a tree for a while. I am a proud, dutiful Chinese citizen. Gone are the days when people just found a corner to do their business resulting in poor sanitation and threats to public health. The Otohimetechnology renders me two warnings: First, I am a humble human being with an obligation to save not only my face but also natural resources. Second, there is still a long way to go in my own country not just in developing technology and the economy, but also in upholding human dignity and promoting human welfare. Take the toilet: Dirty, crowdedtoilets shall, at least, give way to clean, human-friendly ones.Fortunately, I have seen improvements. At Shanghai World Expo 2010, 8,000 toilets, all modern and technologically sophisticated, were installed across the site. What really delighted the visitors, however, was the user-friendly design and services. Toilets were situated every 100 meters. Several hundred volunteers served as toilet guides and sanitation workers. The ratio of female to male toilet space was set at 2.5 to 1. Soft music was played in the toilets. All this seems to celebrate the glory of prehensive humanism.Ladies and gentlemen, science and technology are here to improve earthly life and maximize human happiness. When our world benefits from technology, coupled with human considerations, we are bound to enjoy our life. Conversely, we suffer. The toilet is a piece of sanitaryware and the quintessence of humanism that underlies technological innovation. Like GNP, employment rates, and space exploration efforts, the lowly equipment is an equally important measure of a progressive society. When on a toilet if we feel like a princess, we shall be proudof living in a society that values humanity. If not, we must stand up and make some changes. And if you are still baffled with what I have said, I suggest you take off right now and go experience the bathrooms in this auditorium, because they are what makes our life beautiful or ugly, humanism considered or ignored.英语演讲稿6分钟篇三Honourable judges, distinguished guests, ladiesand gentlemen, good morning. Humanism, by which I mean the will to give people love and care, is the most joyful and meaningful part of being human. From theold days to technologically advanced world, humanismis always telling ordinary but moving stories.Let me tell you what touched my heart this winter break, one morning when I visited my grandmother inthe hospital. Walking down the cold, tiled corridor, I noticed an old man, with his granddaughter – maybe 10 years old – sitting by his side. I was lured there by her voice – light and playful – and after I'd seen them together, I could barely take my eyes away. Delicately draped over this old man's beepingcardiograph was a silk sheet with an ancient, cheerful Chinese poem beautifully written on it – and now, this little girl's entrancing voice lovingly brought these words to life. I stood there transfixed; no longer did I see the family members swimming in nervousness; no longer did I feel the hospital's tense cloud of anxiety; no longer did I hear mortality'ssoft whispers in the corridors; instead, I saw a startling marriage of juxtaposing images and emotions.I was beholding, I realized, a bewilderingly simple yet overwhelmingly powerful metaphor – one that shows that no matter how cold an environment technology can conjure, humanity is always there. In the forefront or the fringes, it is always there. For here it was, illustrated vividly before me –the coldness of technology embodied in the hospital walls, while the soulful words of the little girl danced around them in defiance. This experience opened my eyes in many ways –ever since, I have been acutely aware of, and wonderfully conscious of, the warm heart of humanity surrounding us, whether we choose to recognise it or not. As one psychological theory states, "We see what we want to see". After my experience that day at the hospital, I have chosen to recognize, day by day, the warmth of humanism everywhere I can.I refuse to accept the negative, narrow-minded, caustic opinions that technology is eroding our souls.I say to them, let the machines continue theirmonotonous cacophony, for just one smiling face is infinitely more valuable than a thousand churners of binary code; let technological progress develop and develop until it poetically devours itself, because one heartfelt "hello" to a fellow traveller can speak libraries of warmth; let the powermongers and oil barons puff their last cigars, because the love and care, and warmth of humanism will always shine like beacon, reaching out to each and every heart on this small planet.Although I'll probably never see that little girl or her grandfather again, I'll never forget seeing them there in the hospital that day – and if I did, I'd thank them for showing me how vivid yet subtle, how firm yet fragile, and how invisible yet omnipresent the human spirit is in our world today. Thank you.英语演讲稿6分钟篇四Good afternoon ladies and Gentlemen,I believe that humanism is about kindness and caring for people in need.I believe the role of humanism in today’s technological world is to guide technological development to respond to human need in a benevolent way.In 2010 I was in Yushu during that terrible earthquake. I experienced the full horror of buildingsfalling and people being trapped. I witnessed the quick response from modern technology when people inside yushu called people outside for help with their mobile phones. Very soon the whole world was responding whole heartedly. After only 5 hours, there was another sound- this time it was helicopters bringing doctors, medical supplies, and the facilities to evacuate the wounded to hospital.Recent advances in earthquake detection and rescue technology have been developed in response to the need to save lives quickly.Consider advances in green food technology, guided by the need for clean natural food and to protect the environment;Advances in water conservation and purification, guided by the need for clean drinking water and for crops and livestock;advances in delivering education to everyone, especially the use of video and the internet for distance learning;advances in medicine, especially affordable medicine for AIDS sufferers in Africa;and advances in building technology guided by the need to keep people safe and warm. All these are the result of responding to human needs with kindness and caring and guiding technology for the benefit of mankind. When I think about the world of advanced technology today, I think of my home, the remote and harsh environment of the Tibetan Plateau, and farmers living in tents with solar energy that they use to power their lights, TV, puters and to improve their lifestyle. I think of farmers talking on their mobile phones, discussing the weather patterns, the cost of food, munity news and events. They even talk about Steve Jobs. The train to Lhasa, itself a wonderful engineering feat, brings modern medicine and education to these remote areas. The munities are nowinterlinked and connected, one of the most basic human needs.Human beings have a need to be connected, to be safe to be cared for in times of trouble and hardship. The development of technology must be guided by these needs. If this is not so, then the development of technology is in the hands of mean and, greedy people. The focus of technological development would be wars and weapons, fraud the misuse of information, and the exploitation of people, such as cheap labor. It can only be humanism which provides the guidance we all need for a better world. And it is you, who have the responsibility to use the technology wisely, to spread the kindness and caring.英语演讲稿6分钟篇五Dear classmates,Every one of us, rich or poor, should at least have one or two good friends. My friends will listento me when I want to speak, will wipe my eyes when I cry, will take care of me when I am sick, and myfriends will go together with me side by side through this journey of life.As students, we could share more time with our friends. The friendship in our young hearts is pure, fresh and simple. I often feel very lucky to have alot of good friends. Especially when I had Justin as one of my best friends. Justin was my English teacher from the USA. I met him in 1996 when I was a student who could only speak very little English. Justin was a vivid young man with a bright smile on his face, andhe always had his special way to make the class active and attractive. He taught us English by telling stories, playing games, singing songs, and even dancing. I could still remember very clearly that one afternoon when we fin-ished our class, we went to some other classes to sing songs for them, just like what people do in the states on Christmas Eve. It was so interesting and unforgettable. Justin was an excellent teacher, because he taught us not only how to study English well, but also the way to find out the beauty of the world and the way to be angels to others' lives.I know there was friendship and pure love in our hearts. Facing this valuable emotion neithernationality nor age was important, the real importance lay in faith, under-standing, and care. Justin is thebest friend I have ever had, and I know I will cherish those days of staying together with him as the best part of my memory.Friendship is a kind of treasure in our lives. It is actually like a bottle of wine, the longer it is kept, the sweeter it will be. It is also like a cup of tea. When we are thirsty, it will be our best choice, but when we have enough time to enjoy ourselves, it is also the most fragrant drink. However, in this fast-developing modern society, the reality is not that. More and more people forget to enjoy the beauty of life and -the beauty of friendship. They work hard in order to gain a higher position, in the society and to earn more money for their work. Of course, we don't deny that it is important to find a bet-ter place in our lives, but we wish more and more people could pay a little more attention to themselves and their friends. All of us have to spare some time for personal lives. We have to find the chance to express our emotion and love. When staying with our friends, we can release ourselves pletely. We can do whatever we want, we can laugh together, talk together, and even cry to-gether. I should say that being together with our best friendsis the most wonderful moment of our lives. As we know, we would feel lonely if we didn't even have a friend. But it doesn't mean we could depend on our friends all the time. There is a famous motto saying that “A friend is like a quilt with cottonwadding, but the real thing that keeps you warm is your own temperature.” It is really true. We have to work hard together with our friends, encourage each other and help each other. When we receive love and friendship, we should repay as much as we can. Finally, let's pray together now that one day, all of us could find the person we want to find, and could enjoy a real beautiful friendship in our lives. Let's pray the flower of friendship be-tween our friends and us would always bloom brightly in our hearts.。

英语经典演讲稿(精选6篇)英语经典篇1honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:it is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful saturday morning to share with you my sentiments about life and passion for the english language.about a year and a half ago, i took part in my very first english speech contest. when i stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, i could hardly speak. i stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vain for the right thing to say. my fears had paralyzed me.while my passion for english has never changed, i lost my courage to speak in public. when my professor again encouraged me to take part in this competition, i said “no.” i couldn’t endure yet another painful experience. he looked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart. i will never forget his words. “look,” he said, “we all have our fears, and you have yours. you could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again. running away can never dispel your fears, but action will. a winner is not one who never fails, but one who never quits.”i spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. then i made the bravest and wisest decision of my life: i would face my fears – and take part in the competition!as it turned out, my dear old professor was right. now, here i am, once again standing before a microphone. my heart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most importantly, i have faced my fears -- and that makes all the difference!thank you.英语经典演讲稿篇2Welcome to Guangdongladies and independent practice. at the same time, it is the way to test how much students learned.some students don’t have a clear purpose and attitude towards it. they cheat in different ways. some students are afraid of doing something difficult. these bad habits influenced the efficiency of learning. so, we should pay much attention to our homework.8. think over when you take a test.9. reflect after doing exercise.10. learn to summarize.at last, make a list of your mistakes.mistral , one of the winners of nobel prize in chile, said,“we may wait for lots of things we need, but students can’t do the frustration has not healed with time at all. Now,at the begining of the new millennium, all of the pride and disappointment of the 20th century had gone with the wind. The 21st century, which is full of hope, longing znd thought has come. It is a beautiful school. The buildingsare new and the walls are covered with wild roses that dazzle theeyes inthe bee-humming air. I’ve thought of it often. How the grass turns greenin the springtime, and how the mocking birds flutter their tails andsing, how the moon shines down on the building, how the Cuckoo Waltz ringsout the precious short-lived hours, how the teenagers in bright summerdresses promenade the grassy lawn.During these two years,my teachers have given me unconditionalsupport, and have given their words of encouragement in good times andtheir words of consolation in difficult moments. They have always givenme alittle more than I asked for and instilled in me the values andprinciples that govern my life now. It’s the teachers’ instruction herethat tells me the art of living is to know when to hold fast and when tolet go.The rabbis of old put it this way “A man comes to the world withhis fist clenched, but when he dies, his hand is open.” I’ve learned alot from my classmates and friends,we have overcomed manydifficulties. They have always been optimistic and humorous. When my feethurt, they all cared about me and some of them offered to help me up anddown stairs. We play together,we learn together and we grow up together. It’s the help between our classmates that tells me how to love my life.Howevermean life is ,meet it and live it.It’s the school motto that tells meto improve myself, seek truth and develop innovations.I love my school because of all this, besides, there is something morethan I can say.To end my speech ,let’s all give our best wishes to thefurtherdevelopment of our campus! 励志话题五分钟英语演讲稿五篇英语演讲稿五分钟精选三篇五分钟英语有趣演讲稿英语演讲稿五分钟范文5篇五分钟英语演讲稿6篇英语演讲稿范文1Now, I am not going to stand here and tell you that failure is fun. That period of my life was a dark one, and I had no idea that there was going to be what the press has since represented as a kind of fairy tale resolution. I had no idea then how far the tunnel extended, and for a long time, any light at the end of it was a hope rather than a reality. So why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged. I was set free, because my greatest fear had been realised, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.英语演讲稿范文2You might never fail on the scale I did, but some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default.Failure gave me an inner security that I had never attained by passing examinations. Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learned no other way. I discovered that I had a strong will, and more discipline than I had suspected; I also found out that I had friends whose value was truly above the price of rubies. The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive. You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity. Such knowledge is a true gift, for all that it is painfully won, and it has been worth more than any qualification I ever earned.英语演讲稿范文3So given a Time Turner, I would tell my 21-year-old self that personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a check-list of acquisition or achievement. Your qualifications, your CV, are not your life, though you will meet many people of my age and older who confuse the two. Life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone’s total control, and the humility to know that will enable you to survive its vicissitudes. Now you might think that I chose my second theme, the importance of imagination, because of the part it played in rebuilding my life, but that is not wholly so. Though I personally will defend the value of bedtime stories to my last gasp, I have learned to value imagination in a much broader sense. Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envisionthat which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation. In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power that enables us to empathise with humans whose experiences we have never shared. One of the greatest formative experiences of my life preceded Harry Potter, though it informed much of what I subsequently wrote in those books. This revelation came in the form of one of my earliest day jobs. Though I was sloping off to write stories during my lunch hours, I paid the rent in my early 20s by working at the African research department at Amnesty International’s headquarters in London. There in my little office I read hastily scribbled letters smuggled out of totalitarian regimes by men and women who were risking imprisonment to inform the outside world of what was happening to them. I saw photographs of those who had disappeared without trace, sent to Amnesty by their desperate families and friends. I read the testimony of torture victims and saw pictures of their injuries. I opened handwritten, eye-witness accounts of summary trials and executions, of kidnappings and rapes. Many of my co-workers were ex-political prisoners, people who had been displaced from their homes, or fled into exile, because they had the temerity to speak against their governments. Visitors to our offices included those who had come to give information, or to try and find out what had happened to those they had left behind.I shall never forget the African torture victim, a young man no older than I was at the time, who had become mentally ill after all he had endured in his homeland. He trembled uncontrollably as he spoke into a video camera about the brutality inflicted uponhim. He was a foot taller than I was, and seemed as fragile as a child.英语演讲稿范文4I was given the job of escorting him back to the Underground Station afterwards, and this man whose life had been shattered by cruelty took my hand with exquisite courtesy, and wished me future happiness. And as long as I live I shall remember walking along an empty corridor and suddenly hearing, from behind a closed door, a scream of pain and horror such as I have never heard since. The door opened, and the researcher poked out her head and told me to run and make a hot drink for the young man sitting with her. She had just had to give him the news that in retaliation for his own outspokenness against his country’s regime, his mother had been seized and executed.Every day of my working week in my early 20s I was reminded how incredibly fortunate I was, to live in a country with a democratically elected government, where legal representation and a public trial were the rights of everyone.Every day, I saw more evidence about the evils humankind will inflict on their fellow humans, to gain or maintain power. I began to have nightmares, literal nightmares, about some of the things I saw, heard, and read. And yet I also learned more about human goodness at Amnesty International than I had ever known before.英语演讲稿范文5Amnesty mobilises thousands of people who have never been tortured or imprisoned for their beliefs to act on behalf of those who have. The power of human empathy, leading to collective action, saves lives, and frees prisoners. Ordinary people, whose personal well-being and security are assured, join together in huge numbers to save people they do not know, and will never meet. My small participation in that process was one of the most humbling and inspiring experiences of my life.Unlike any other creature on this planet, humans can learn and understand, without having experienced. They can think themselves into other people’s places.Of course, this is a power, like my brand of fictional magic, that is morally neutral. One might use such an ability to manipulate, or control, just as much as to understand or sympathise. And many prefer not to exercise their imaginations at all. They choose to remain comfortably within the bounds of their own experience, never troubling to wonder how it would feel to have been born other than they are. They can refuse to hear screams or to peer inside cages; they can close their minds and hearts to any suffering that does not touch them personally; they can refuse to know.I might be tempted to envy people who can live that way, except that I do not think they have any fewer nightmares than I do. Choosing to live in narrow spaces leads to a form of mental agoraphobia, and that brings its own terrors. I think the wilfully unimaginative see more monsters. They are often more afraid. What is more, those who choose not to empathise enable real monsters. For without ever committing an act of outright evil ourselves, we collude with it, through our own apathy. One of the many things I learned at the end of that Classics corridor down which I ventured at the age of 18, in search of something I could not then define, was this, written by the Greek author Plutarch: What we achieve inwardly will change outerreality.。

英文演讲稿范文(1)Hold Fast To Your DreamsI have a dream today.I have a dream that one day every vally shall be exalted, every hill andmountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crookedplaces will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, andall flesh shall see it together.Wow, what a dream it has been for Martin Luther King. But the changing world seems telling me that people gradually get their dreams lost somehow inthe process of growing up, and sometimes I personally find myself saying goodbyeunconsciously to those distant childhood dreams. However, we meed dreams. They nourish our spirit; they represent possibility even when we are dragged down by reality. They keep us going. Mostsuccessful people are dreamers as well as ordinary people who are not afraid tothink big and dare to be great. When we were little kids, we all dreamed ofdoing something big and splashy, something significant. Now what we need to dois to maintain them, refresh them and turn them into reality. However, the toughest part is that we often have no ideas how to translate these dreams intoactions. Well, just start with concrete objectives and stick to it. Don’t letthe nameless fear confuse the eye and confound our strong belief of future. Through our talents, through our wits, through our endurance and through ourcreativity, we will make it.Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged birdthatcannot fly. Hold fast to dreams, for when dreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow. So my dear friends, think of your old and maybe dead dreams. Whatever it is, pick it up and make it alive from today.英文演讲稿范文(2)Never Give Up“If I could reach higher, just for one moment to touch the sky…”---this isfrom my favorite song Reach. When we are appreciating the passionate melody of Gloria Estefan, we couldhardly imagine that she could return to the stage after her paralysis. In theyear 1990, this Cuban singer was knocked down in a traffic accident, and thedoctor declared that she might never walk again. But Gloria did not give up andkept up constant exercising. Just one year after the disaster, she stood upagain and presented this encouraging song at the Atlanta Olympics.Whenever I think of Gloria, I can’t help recalling my memory seven yearsago, when I first entered university. Naturally shy, ordinary looking, averagescores in study, just like an ugly duckling, I seemed to be the least outstanding one in my class. And the successive failures in the beginning led meinto despair. “Am I destined to take the back seat to others?” Unwilling tosubmit to the fate, I paid more efforts on my study as well as many other activities, film dubbing, recital, drama… cause I just want to catch every little opportunity to prove myself. Constant effort yields sure success. Thanksto the competition, I received some awards and most of all, I gained the courageand confidence to face any difficulties in my life journey.Life is just like farming, and what you can reap depends a lot on your sowing and dedication. Once you have a dream, don’t be hesitant. Your next difficult step may be the one to the top. Keep going forward, even in the toughest time, and never give up.英文演讲稿范文(3)Honourable judges, ladies and gentlemen,Good afternoon! Today I would like to talk about the importance of keepingoptimistic. When we encounter difficulties in life, we notice that some of uschoose to bury their heads in the sand. Unfortunately, however, this attitudewill do you no good, because if you will have no courage even to face them, howcan you conquer them? Thus, be optimistic, ladies and gentlemen, as it can giveyou confidence and help you see yourself through the hard times, just as WinstonChurchill once said, “An optimist sees an opportunity in every calamity; apessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity.”Ladies and Gentlemen, keeping optimistic, you will be able to realize, inspite of some hardship, there’s always hope waiting for you, which will lead youto the ultimate success. Historically as well as currently, there are too manyoptimists of this kind to enumerate. You see, Thomas Edison is optimistic; ifnot, the light of hope in his heart could not illuminate the whole world. AlfredNobel is optimistic; if not, the explosives and the prestigious Nobel Prize would not have come into being. And Lance Armstrong is also optimistic; if not,the devil of cancer would have devoured his life and the world would not see a5-time winner of the Tour De France.A rose may be beautiful, or maybe not; that depends on your attitude only, and so does success, so does life. Hindrances and difficulties do exist, but ifyou are optimistic, then they are only episodes on your long way to the throneof success; they are more bridges than obstacles! Now I prefer to end my speechwith the great British poet Shelley’s lines: “If winter comes, can spring be farbehind?” Thank you!英文演讲稿范文(4)As the song goes “ My future isn’t a dream .” I love the song which bringsme confidence when singing it every time . I believe that all our dreamscancome true if we have courage to pursue them .When I was young my father alwaysasked me what I would be in the future . Sometimes I found it very hard to givea certain reply . “ I want to be a doctor .”“ I want to be a teacher .”and “ I’d like to be a scientist !” Many of these answers are perhaps very childish andridiculous . But I never think they are far away .How time flies! Who is able to give a definition to his future ? I know clearly that those high buildings are based on solid foundation . As a student ,I should have a reasonable aim , and study hard . My goal is to enter the bestuniversity for further study after middle school . I know it’s hard work , and I’ll come across many difficulties and frustrations . But no matter what they are, I’ll keep working on it and never give up . My teacher says there ’s only onekind of people that are truly successful : those who are brave enough to put upwith hardships . Even if I won’t achieve the goal , I have no regrets for what Ihave done , for I have struggled for my life .英文演讲稿范文(5)Can money buy happiness? Different people have different opinions. Somethink yes while others hold the opposite. It is true that with enough money one can buy all the things one wants andlive a life of comfort and security. However it is equally true that lack ofmoney causes great distress. It is a common view that "money is the root of allevil." The pursuit of money drives many people to cheat and steal. In some places there is nothing that cannot be bought with money resulting in corruptsocieties where everybody is miserable. So money does not necessarily mean happiness. It all depends on how it isused. If we make honest and sensible use of money it can be a stepping-stone tohappiness l Although money cannot buy happiness it can make happiness possibleif it is employed sensibly.英文演讲稿范文(6)Dear judges:I am very glad to make a speech here !
