The space shuttle Challenger broke up upon lift-off on 28 January 1986, killing its seven crew members. Among the dead were two female astronauts, Judith Resnik, a veteran astronaut and engineer, and Christa McAuliffe, a school teacher who had been chosen to accompany the crew to give televised school lessons from space. A long investigation was then conducted to trace the cause of the accident, and NASA thought that it had solved all the problems. However, after the 1 February 2003 destruction of the space shuttle Columbia and the death of its crew, it was realised that the design of the space shuttle was conceptually flawed. This led to a drastic reduction in the number of space shuttle flights and the ultimate end of the space shuttle programme in 2011.

The Jade Rabbit was a Chinese lunar rover which landed on the moon as part of the Chang'e 3 mission in December, 2013. It was the first soft landing on the moon and the first unmanned rover on the moon since the mid-1970s. It ceased operating on 31 July 2016, after setting a record for the longest unmanned mission on the moon.

The photo of the man on the moon is of Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin standing by the leg of the lunar module, taken by Neil Armstrong in 1969. Aldrin was born in 1930 in New Jersey, the USA. As a young man, he served in combat as a fighter pilot. While still in the Air Force, he earned a doctorate in aeronautics from MIT, and was selected as an astronaut in 1963. In 1966, he took his first flight to space, and set a record for the amount of time spent outside the capsule on spacewalks. On the Apollo 11 mission, he piloted the lunar module as it landed and took off from the moon, and was the second man to walk on the moon. He retired from NASA and the Air Force aing. Unlike Armstrong, Aldrin has kept busy as a public figure, appearing on TV programmes and working as a tireless advocate for space travel.
