It’s called Apple Day but in practice it’s more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has caught on, events now spread out over most of October around Britain.Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesn’t taste of anything special, it’s still worth a try, as is the knobbly(多疙瘩的) Cat’s Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else. There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you’ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it’s a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for withapple-themed fun and games.Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园). If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.5.What can people do at the apple events?A.Attend experts’ lectures.B.Visit fruit-loving families.C.Plant fruit trees in an orchard.D.Taste many kinds of apples.6.What can we learn about Decio?A.It is a new variety.B.It has a strange look.C.It is rarely seen now.D.It has a special taste.7.What does the underlined phras e “a pipe dream” in Paragraph 3 mean?A.A practical idea.B.A vain hope.C.A brilliant plan.D.A selfish desire.8.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A.To show how to grow apples.B.To introduce an apple festival.C.To help people select apples.D.To promote apple research.阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
Bad news sells. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored(监控) in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules. By tracking people’s e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.“The ‘if it bleeds’ rule works for mass media,” says Jonah Berger, a scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. “They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don’t want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer.”Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication—e-mails, Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative(消极的), but that didn’t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands o f articles on The New York Times’ website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the“most e-mailed” list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times’ readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others. Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused(激发) one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared, as Dr. Berger explains in his new book, “Contagious: Why Things Catch On.”9.What do the classic rules mentioned in the text apply to?A.News reports. B.Research papers.C.Private e-mails. His mother in the house, looking out of the window, saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In fear, she ran towards the water, yelling to the son as loudly as she could. It was too late. The alligator reached him. From the dock, the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator got his legs. That began an incredible tug of war(拔河)between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother would not let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard her screams, ran from his truck, and shot the alligator.Amazingly, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His leg were extremely scarred by the animal’s attack, and on his arms were scratches (抓痕) from mothers’ fingernails where she had tried to hang on to the son she loved. The newspaper reporter who interviewed the boy asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted his pant legs . And then, he proudly said to the reporter: “B ut look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my mom would not let go.”You and I can identify with (理解) that little boy. We have scars, too. No, not from alligator, or anything quite so dramatic . But according to a recent survey, the situation is all too common. Loneliness and other anxiety problems –worrying about life’s pressures – can even lead to self-murder.An article in China Daily gave no reason for this other than the usual blaming of the post-80s generation. According to a high level official, young people suffering from discouragement are mostly “spoiled and have not been taught to be independent, responsible and express‘thank-you’.” Well, how do you like that? First, I don’t think China’s youth are exactly spoiled. They certainly have more things than their parents did, but a lot of the money spent on them is for their education including various extra classes.Discouragement and anxiety are now the fastest growing challenges in modern societies. We sense a lack of close friends who can talk to honestly and openly. In 1985, a US study found that one in ten people did not have such a friend. In 2006, it was one in four. It’s easy to see the connection between loneliness and discouragement. But what actually causes this increasing loneliness?Surely, with Internet social networking sites such as Kaixin, we have more friends than ever.A new study has shown that the more time teenagers spend in front of computers, the less close they are to friends and family. Kaixin or QQ may be fun but it lacks meaning, compared to personal connections in the real world. And then there are those endless online games popular with young Chinese but increasingly there are more interesting choices. For example, new sports such as skateboarding are starting to catch on(流行)in bigger cities, as is playing music in a band. These creative hobbies are done in a group and thus friendship can be stronger. Hopefully young people will also be drawn out of the Internet cafes and interactive computer games that in fact fail to recreate a real and interactive experience.8.According to the high level official, it is easy for teenagers lacking independence and responsibility to _______.A.become spoiledB.play endless online gamesC.suffer from loneliness and anxietyD.refuse to express gratitude9.What does the writer think of the Internet social networking site Kaixin?A.Open but ridiculous.B.Honest and responsible.C.Real and fun.D.Interesting but meaningless.10.It can be inferred in Paragraph 3 that _______.A.it’s now more difficult for people to find close friends to have an honest chat with B.parents focus mostly on children’s education rather than the personality building C.young people have no idea of expressing appreciation because of being spoiled D.teenagers will recreate a real and interactive experience to strengthen friendship 11.According to the text, which of the following can help us avoid being lonely in thecrowd?A.To stay long in Internet cafes.B.To focus on extra courses.C.To give up our own hobbies.D.To play music in a band.Electric cars are dirty. In fact, not only are they dirty, but they might even be more dirty than their gasoline-powered cousins.People in California love to talk about “zero-emissions (排放) vehicles”, but people in California seem to________where electricity comes from. Power plants mostly use fire to make it. Apart from the few people who have their roofs covered with solar cells, we get our electricity from generators (发电机). Generators are fueled by something----usually coal, oil, but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms and geothermal (地热) plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something. In other words, those “zero-emissio ns” cars are likely coal-burning cars. Because the coal is burned somewhere else, it looks clean. It is not true. It's as if the California Greens are covering their eyes----“If I can't see it, it's not happening.” Gasoline is an incredibly (极其) efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it. But when you take that gas (or another fuel) and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heat--at the generator, through the transmission lines, etc.A gallon of gas may drive your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas won't get you nearly as far---so electric cars burn more fuel than gasoline-powered ones. If our electricity came mostly from wind or geothermal, or solar, then an electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons, we don't use much of those energy sources. In addition, electric cars' batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill (垃圾填埋场). And finally, when cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread across all the roads. When it's a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot.12.Which of the following words can replace “be clueless about” in Paragraph 2?A.be familiar with. B.fail to understand.C.be curious about. D.show their interest in.13.The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our car run _________.A.at least 25 miles B.more than 25 milesC.less than 25 miles D.as far as 25 miles14.In the author’s opinion, compared with cars using gas, electric cars are more __________. 湖北襄阳市四校高二上期中联考英语试卷
2020-2021学年湖北襄阳市四校高二上期中联考英语试卷学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________一、阅读选择Wouldn’t you want to travel more often without breaking the bank? If you are interested, read on to find out how you can do simple things to save money next time you go on vacation. AirfaresPlan in advance and visit discount websites to see if there are better deals. If you are planning to stay in two countries and an airline makes you change planes on those countries anyway, you might be in luck. Check pricing on the flights to see if you can stay a few days at the country of the flight change instead of changing planes right away since airlines often let you do that for the same price.AccommodationsSometimes the smaller towns close to where you are going have hotels that are much less expensive. If you don’t mind the 15-minute ride, you might just save a large amount of money. Home exchanges are pretty cool and popular especially in Europe. If you are of the adventure type, this could be exciting and refreshing. Sometimes smaller hotel chains are willing to give you free upgrades or even free nights. If you are staying at a destination for at least a few days, consider a vacation home instead of hotels. They are often more comfortable and your cost will probably be cheaper.EatingFigure out where you will be and eat before you actually go out. Avoid breakfast from the hotels because chances are good that the breakfast from the hotel is expensive and isn’t great. It probably pays to walk out the front door in the morning and find a local cafe. You might just discover the local favorite unexpectedly. Want a breakfast that costs nothing? Ask for some bread to-go at the restaurant the night before. In addition, fancy lunches are often much less expensive than din ners. If you eat a big lunch and a light dinner, it’s also healthier. 1.What kind of travelers will choose a vocation home?A.Those who dislike small hotel chains.B.Those who want an adventure trip.C.Those who plan to live in one place for a few days.D.Those who don’t mind long-distance trips.2.To save money on eating, you are expected to ________.A.eat more for dinner than lunchB.have three meals in the hotelsC.buy bread from restaurantsD.try a local cafe for breakfast3.The text is mainly about ________.A.trips in different countriesB.tips on economical travelC.dos and don’ts during a tripD.arrangements for a package holidayWhen a customer came into a Mexican restaurant in Georgia with an unusual request, a selfless waiter didn’t hesitate(犹豫) to help him out.A disabled man with no hands who ordered a meal at Cinco cle Mayo Mexican Grill in Douglasville on Sunday afternoon hoped someone might be able to help him eat his lunch. Server Alex Ruiz, 22, was more than happy to help as he sat opposite from the man and helped him enjoy his meal. The heartwarming moment was captured in a photo by one of Ruiz’s workmates, Crystal Figueroa. She posted it on the restaurant’s Facebook page.“He’s a great person,” Figuero, 24, whose father manages the restau rant, said.“He’s always so nice, and the fact that he just came out of nowhere and helped a man he doesn’t even know have a meal says everything. That just shows the person that he is.One of Figueroa’s friends, Reginald Widener, also witnessed the moment and posted the photo on his Facebook page.“This seriously hit me right in the soul,” Widener wrote. The waiters did not get the name of the man. He had never eaten in the restaurant before, according to Figueroa. But Ruiz jumped at the chance to help.“I just feel like people should see that there’re still good people out there,” Figueroa said. “It was just a happy moment.”4.Why did Alex Ruiz help the man eat his lunch?A.The man was rich.B.The man had no hands.C.They knew each other.D.He is Alex Ruiz’s father.5.How many people posted the photo on the Internet?A.Two. B.One. C.No one. D.Many. 6.What’s the relationship between Alex and Figueroa?A.They are friends.B.They are family.C.Figueroa is Alex’s boss.D.They are workmates.7.What kind of person is Alex?A.He hopes people to find something good in life.B.He likes working on Sundays.C.He is ready to help others.D.He likes to post photos onto Facebook.Mexico City sits on an inland plateau(高原) surrounded by volcanic peaks, which makes air quality a constant concern for people who live here.In April, the country took a decisive step toward improving air quality by enacting(颁布) a temporary ban(禁令) on private and federal vehicles in the city. The rule forbids people from driving in the city one day each week and one Saturday each month. Electric vehicles, government service vehicles, public transport options and school buses are not included in the ban.Mexico City isn’t the first urban centre to be involved in car-free living. But the ban is more than an awareness-raiser; it was enacted with the direct aim of solving air pollution. In March, the city sank into a deep brown haze of smog when pollution levels passed the 200 mark. The city ordered some 1.1m of the area’s 4.7m cars off the streets and also offered free bus and subway rides.Mexico City’s temporary vehicle ban raises questions about the best ways to improve urban air quality. India, whose citizens breathe some of the world’s dirtiest air, has tried a variety of solutions. Earlier this year, the Indian government started a 4% sales tax on new-car purchases.Beijing also has experience with cleaning the air. The city introduced alternate-day rules inadvance of the 2008 Olympic Games, which produced good, if short-lived, results. The day after the vehicle-use restrictions (限制) werelifted, the blue faded back to gray. And then there is the London congestion(拥挤) charge, introduced in 2003. The charge has had a measurable effect on air quality. For now, Mexico City—named by the United Nations as the most polluted city on the planet in 1992—can look forward to the start of the region’s rainy season, when daily showers will help to clean the air.8.What makes the air quality of Mexico City a concern for citizens?A.Its population.B.Its location.C.Its public transportation.D.Its government action.9.Which is true about the rule enacted in April in Mexico City?A.It will come into effect forever.B.Federal vehicles are not included in the ban.C.The rule prevents people from driving on Saturdays each month.D.It’s a decisive measure toward reducing air pollution.10.What can we learn from the passage?A.Two more places are mentioned which dealt with air pollution besides Mexico City. B.The Indian government started a 47% sales tax on new-car purchases in advance of the 2008 Olympic Games.C.The action Beijing took has got good results for a very long time.D.As for Mexico City, rainy season can help to improve the air quality.11.Which word has the closest meaning to the underlined word “lifted”?A.removed B.raised C.approved D.clarifiedBecause, like most of you, I began college in my teens, but after a year, I was offered my dream job at Universal Studios, so I dropped out.Well, I left college because I knew exactly what I wanted to do and some of you know, too —but some of you don’t. Or maybe you thought you knew but are now questioning that choice. Maybe you’re sitting there trying to find out how to tell your parents that you want to be a doctor and not a writer.I told my parents if my movie career didn’t go well, I’d re-enroll(重新报名上学). It went all right. But finally, I returned for one big reason. Most people go to college for an education, and some go for their parents, but I went for my kids. I’m the father of seven, and I kept insist ing on the importance of going to college, but I hadn’t walked the walk. So, in my fifties, I re-enrolled at Cal State-Long Beach, and I earned my degree.Well, what you choose to do next is what we call in the movies the ‘character-defining(角色定义) moment’.Life is one strong, long string of character-defining moments. And I was lucky that at 18 I knew what I exactly wanted to do. But I didn’t know who I was. How could I? And how could any of us? Because for the first 25 years of our lives, we are trained to listen to voices that are not our own. Parents and professors fill our heads with wisdom and information, and then employers and tutors take their place and explain how this world really works. And I want to be clear that your intuition(直觉) is different f rom your conscience. Here’s the difference: Your conscience shouts, ‘here’s what you should do,’ while your intuition whispers, ‘here’s what you could do.’ Listen to that voice that tells you what you could do. Nothing will define your character more than that.Sticking to your character requires a lot of courage. And to be courageous, you’re going to need a lot of support. And if you’re lucky, you have parents like mine. I consider my mom my lucky charm. But look, if your family’s not always available, there’s backup. Do you remember that movie? It’s a Wonderful Life? There’s an actor’s line in it: No man is a failure who has friends.” And I hope you hold on to the friendships you’re made here at Harvard. And among your friends, I hope you find someone you want to share your life with.12.In the writer’s opinion, why can’t we define ourselves before 25 years old? A.Because we are not old enough.B.Because we are used to listening to others’ voices.C.Because our parents and professors ask us to listen to the voices of our employers. D.Because we can’t find suitable jobs.13.According to the passage, which of the following is true?A.The writer completed his college study in his teens.B.The writer’s movie career didn’t go all right so he returned to colleg e.C.It was not until he was 25 years old that the writer knew what he exactly wanted to do. D.The writer suggests we should listen to our intuition.14.What do the last two paragraphs mainly tell us?A.It takes much courage to insist on your character.B.It’s important to find a boyfriend or a girlfriend at Harvard.C.There are some supporters who should be valued in our life.D.The movie It’s a Wonderful Life is worth watching.15.The passage is most likely to be ________.A.a speech B.a report C.a film review D.an advertisement二、七选五根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

The next building was only a few feet away from mine. There was a woman who lived there, whom I had never met, yet I could see her seated by her window each afternoon, sewing or reading. After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, “I wonder why that womandoesn't wash her window. It really looks terrible.”One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including washing the window on the inside.Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was clearly visible(可见的). Her window was clean! Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing (批评) her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through my own dirty window. That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings?Since then, whenever I wanted to judge someone, I asked myself first, “Am I looking at him through my own dirty window?” I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world about me more clearly.5.“It dawned on me” in paragraph 5 probably means “________”.A.I began to understand it B.it cheered me upC.I knew it grew light D.it began to get dark6.It’s clear that ___________.A.the writer had never met the woman before B.the writer often washed the window C.they both worked as cleaners D.they lived in a small town7.From the passage, we can learn___________.A.one shouldn’t criticize others very oftenB.one should often make his windows cleanC.one must judge himself before he judges othersD.one must look at others through his dirty windowsBooks are for reading, but man must bring to their reading a desire to learn and a power of absorbing. Reading should be active, not passive. When students first go to a library, they may be at a loss as to what to read of all the different subjects. Well, Bacon tells you to “look at weak places in your armor(盔甲)”, and shows you how to fill up the blanks in your knowledge. On the other hand, it is no good just trying to fill your mind with knowledge. Knowledge in itself is often useless. A mind filled with too much knowledge is like a room too full of furniture; a man cannot walk about freely in it,and look out of the windows. It is much better to concentrate on a few subjects which interest you and to deal lightly with the others than to march heavily through the whole range(范围) of learning, like a silly tourist going through a museum and not missing a single object. If you try to master every subject you may become very wise, but you will be very lonely and you will probably lose all your friends. So you must learn to pick and choose, and you must also learn to look here and there in a library like a camel eating grass on the grassland. If you watch it eating, you will see that although he is supposed to be one of the most stupid animals in the world, he has at least one of the qualities of the cultured man, the power to pick and choose. A student looking for mental food in a library should take the camel as his model.8.The writer thinks that one must ___________.A.read as many books as he canB.read books on the subjects that interest himC.read and absorb a lotD.try to read books on all the different subjects9.A cultured man is similar to a camel because __________.A.neither of them is interested in knowledgeB.both of them have the ability to selectC.neither of them can be considered wiseD.the man reads books as much as a camel eats grass10.The term “mental food” refers to ____________-.A.grassland B.subjectsC.books D.brain11.In the second paragraph the writer mainly discusses___________.A.how to compare furniture with books B.why books must be absorbedC.how to select reading materials D.why students go to a libraryGoing green seems to be fad (时尚) for a lot of people these days. Whether that is good or bad, we can’t really say, but for the two of us, going green is not a fad but a lifestyle. On April 22,2011,we decided to be green every single day for an entire year. This meant doing 365 different things, and it also meant challenging ourselves to go green beyond the easy things. Rather than recycle and reduce our energy, we had to think of 365 different things to do and this was no easy task. With the idea of going green every single day a year, Our Green Year started. My wife and I decided to educate people about how they could go green in their lives and hoped we could show people all green things that could be done to help the environment. We wanted to push the message that every little bit helps.Over the course of Our Green Year, we completely changed our lifestyles. We now shop at organic (有机的) stores. We consume less meat, choosing green food. We have greatly reduced our buying we don’t need. We have given away half of what we owned through websites. Our home is kept clean by vinegar and lemon juice, with no chemical cleaners. We make our own butter, enjoying the smell of home-made fresh bread. In our home office anyone caught doing something ungreen might be punished. Our minds have been changed by Our Green Year. We are grateful for the chance to have been able to go green and educate others. We believe that we do have the power to change things and help our planets.12.What might be the best title for the passage?A.Going Green. B.Protecting the Planet.C.Keeping Open-Minded D.Celebrating Our Green Year.13.It was difficult for the couple to live a green life for the whole year because_________.
