The flight attendants were very friendly, the food served on the plane was tasty and my aisle seat was really comfortable. After a 13-hour flight, I arrive in Beijing finally. Suddenly I saw so many Chinese people and heard so many people speaking Chinese. It was so exciting! Unfortunately I left my passport on the airplane, so I had to go back to find it. Then her husband lost his job, and the plan fell apart.“I have two kids in college, and I want to say “come home,” but at the same time I want to provide them with a good education,” says Diana. The Smith family did work out a solution: They asked and received more aid from the school, and each son increased his borrowing to the maximum amount through the federal loan (贷款) program. They will each graduate with a $20,000 debt, but at least they will be able to finish school. With unemployment rising, financial aid administrators expect to see more families like the Smiths. More students are applying for aid, and more families expect to need student loans. College administrators are concerned that they will not have enough aid money to go around. At the same time, tuition (学费)continues to rise. A report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education found that college tuition and fees increased 439% from 1982 to 2007, while average family income rose just 147%. Student borrowing has more than doubled in the last decade.“If we go on this way for another 25 years, we won’t have an affordable system of higher education,”says Patrick M. Callan, president of the center. “The middle class families have been financing it through debt. They will send kids to college whatever it takes, even if that means a huge amount of debt.”Financial aid administrators have been having a hard time as many companies decide that student loans are not profitable enough and have stopped making them. the good news, however, is that federal loans account for about three quarters of student borrowing, and the government says that money will flow uninterrupted.16. According to Paragraph 1, why did the Smith family’s plan fail?A. The twins wasted too much money.B. The father was out of work.C. Their sayings ran out.D. The family fell apart.17. How did the Smiths manage to solve their problem?A. They asked their kids to come home.B. They borrowed $20,000 from the school.C. They encouraged their twin sons to do part-time jobs.D. They got help from the school and the federal government.18. Financial aid administrators believe that ____________.A. more families will face the same problem as the SmithsB. the government will receive more letters of complaintC. college tuition fees will double soonD. America’s unemployment will fall19. What can we learn about the middle class families from the text?A. They blamed the government for the tuition increase.B. Their income remained steady in the last decade.C. They will try their best to send kids to college.D. Their debts will be paid off within 25 years/20. According to the last paragraph, the government will ___________A. provide most students with scholarshipsB. dismiss some financial aid administratorsC. stop the companies from making student loansD. go on providing financial support for college studentsIV. Reading Comprehension.(每小题 2 分,共 40 分)Passage 1Mobile phones are the items that a lot of people are having today. However, do we really need to have a mobile phone by our side?We could start with the advantages of mobile phones. There are many things that we could do with mobile phones. With the advancement of technology, more and more features are being added to the mobile phones which make them more useful. In addition to making calls, mobile phones also support a wide variety of other services such as text messaging, email, Internet access, business applications, gaming and photography. We can bring them everywhere, and can be reached by others anytime. They make the world smaller, bringing people together no matter where they are.But we could have some risks when using our mobile phones. We may have accidents whenwe use them while driving. Some studies show that mobile phones can do harm to our bodies; and materials in mobile phones could damage our environment.Since there are so many risks, why do we still have mobile phones? This is because these risks or disadvantages can be overcome. For example, while we are driving we can easily pull up our car if we really need to use the phone. Mobile phone manufacturers are reducing the radiation of mobile phones to avoid health risks.Though there are both pros and cons of using mobile phones, we could easily see that there are more advantages than disadvantages. Moreover, mobile phones are becoming cheaper, which might be another reason why mobile phones are increasingly used today.1. Which of the following functions is NOT mentioned in the passage?A. Text messaging.B. Camera.C. GPS.2. What risks might mobile phones cause?A. Traffic accidents and health problems.B. Environmental damage.C. Both A and B.3. Because people don’t believe that mobile phones have any disadvantages.B. Because the disadvantages of mobile phones can be avoided.C. Because people cannot live without mobile phones.5. According to the last paragraph, why are mobile phones increasingly being used today?A. They are safer.B. They have more functions.C. Reading Comprehension(每小题2 分,共30 分)Part 1Great changes have taken place in the make-up of families over the last 100 years. In the past, parents, their children, and their children often lived together in a big family. Such a big family is called an ex-tended family. In some places, this type of family even included relatives by marriage, who are called in-laws, as well as the sons and daughters of brothers and sisters, in other words, nephews and nieces.Nowadays, in many countries, the extended family is no longer very common. Instead, only two generations, parents and children, live together. This is called a nuclear family. There is dependent in economy. Therefore, they are unwilling to depend on their parents. Secondly, the youth are looking forward to having their private room so that can enjoy their lives more freely. Thirdly, children are with their parents. However, in the United States, the number of the nuclear family is also decreasing, due to the influences of some factors such as divorce and the ending of marriage. As a result, there is an increasing number of single-parent families, or families with only a mother or only a father. In addition, another kind of family is appearing, which is called a blended family. This refers to a family in which two persons remarry. These two persons both once got divorced but have children. In the new family, they make both groups of children live together. There is another type of family with double incomes but no kids, namely DINK. DINK family chooses not to have children because of many different reasons. However, the tendency is that, more and more young couple s don’t want to take too many responsibilities. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin (顽童) was walking around the shining car. “Is this your car, Paul?” he asked.Paul answered, “Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was surprised. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn't cost you anything? Boy, I wish ....”He hesitated.Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the boy said surprised Paul greatly.“I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.” Paul looked at th e boy in surprise, then he said again, “Would you like to take a ride in my car?”“Oh yes, I’d love that.”After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, “Paul, would you mind driving in front of my house?”Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted, He wanted to show his neighbours that he could ride home in a big car. But Paul was wrong again. “Will you stop where those two steps are?” the boy asked. He ran up to the steps. Then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled (残疾) brother. He sat him down on the step and pointed to the car.“There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money. This is how I experimented with giving-away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery, I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard (无意中听到)our conversation. “Wasn't it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?” I said yes. “Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know wh at a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”11. From the passage, we understand that __________ .A. the author did not understand the importance of giving until he was in late thirtiesB. the author was like most people who were mostly receivers rather than giversC. the author received the same education as most people during his childhoodD. the author liked most people as they looked upon life as a process of getting12. When the author needed a post-office box, ____________.A. he had to put his name on a waiting listB. he wrote the postmaster a note of appreciationC. many people had applied for post-office boxes before himD. he asked the postmaster to make one for him15. In reply to the postmaster’s question, the author said ____________.A. it was the special deliveryB. it was the post-office boxC. it was the note of appreciation he wroteD. it was he who wrote him a letter a year agoIV. However, do we reallyneed to have a mobile phone by our side?We could start with the advantages of mobile phones. We may have accidents when we use them while driving. Moreover, mobile phones are becoming cheaper, which might be another reason why mobile phones are increasingly used today.6.Which of the following functions is NOT mentioned in the passage?A.Text messaging.B.Camera.C.GPS.7.What risks might mobile phones cause?A.Traffic accidents and health problems.B.Environmental damage.C.Both A and B.8.What are mobile phone manufacturers doing to prevent mobile phone users from health risks?A.They are reducing the radiation of mobile phones.B.They are trying to persuade people to use mobile phones less.C.They are developing new models of mobile phones.9.Why do people still use mobile phones despite their disadvantages?A.Because people don’tbelieve that mobile phones have any disadvantages.B.Because the disadvantages of mobile phones can be avoided.C.Because people cannot live without mobile phones.10.According to the last paragraph, why are mobile phones increasingly being used today?A.They are safer.B.They have more functions.C.They are becoming cheaper.Passage 3It is often difficult for a man to be quite sure how much tax he ought to pay to the government because it depends on so many different things: whether the man is married; how many children he has; whether he supports any relations, how much interest he receives, how much he has spent on his house during the year, and so on. All this makes it difficult to decide exactly how much the tax is.There was an artist who was always very careful to pay the proper amount. One year, after posting his check as usual, he began to wonder if he had paid enough, and after a lot of work, with a pencil and paper, he found that he had not. He thought that he owedthe government something. He was just writing another check to send it to the tax collector when the postman dropped a letter into the box at the front door. Opening it, the artist was surprised to find inside it a check for five pounds from the tax collector. The official explained that too much had been paid, and that therefore the difference was now returned to the taxpayer.11.According to the passage, to decide the exact amount of tax to be paid is ____________.A.simpleB.easyC.difficultD.interesting12.It is mentioned in the passage that one has to pay tax according to ____________.A.how much education one has receivedB.whether one is single or marriedC.how old one ’s children areD.where one lives13.The word “proper”in the second paragraph means __________.A.smallB.bigC.rightD.wrong14.After a lot of work, the artist thought that he had paid the government ____________.A.less tax than he should haveB.more tax than he should haveC.as much tax as usualD.just enough tax15.Why did the tax collector send a letter to the artist?A.To send him a new tax form.B.To return the money overpaid.C.To remind him of paying the tax.D.To explain the rules of tax paying.Passage 4The invention of telephone has greatly eased the communication among people, but callers should be careful about when to make a phone call or it will cause embarrassments. It is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning in the USA. If someone iscalled very early in the morning, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call indicates great importance of the matter which requires immediate attention of the person called. The same implication is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. at night. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it ’s an urgency of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. Time plays a very important role in our social life as youcan imagine. In the USA an invitation should be sent to the guests in advance because guests usually believe that they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not always necessarily true of the case all overthe world. In some other countries, it may be taken stupid to make an appointment too far in advance because plans made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The concept of time varies in different regions of the world. Thus, misunderstandings are sometimes inevitable between men of different cultural backgrounds that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in America, for example. A lack of promptness is regarded as being impolite or not being fully responsible. In the US it would be incredible to keep a business partner or a guest waiting for an hour, and it would be too impolite and unacceptable by their social etiquettes. A person who is5 minutes late is expected to give some words of explanation to the people waiting, though he might not complete his sentence.16.What is the main idea of this passage?A.It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning or in sleeping hours in the US.B.The role of time in social life over the world..C.If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible in theUS.D.Not every country treats the concept of time as the same.17.What does it mean according to the passage if you call someone during his or hersleeping hours?A.A matter of work.B.A matter of life or death.C.You want to see him or her.D.You want to make an appointment with him or her.18.Which of the following time is proper if you want to make an appointment with your friend?A.At 7:00 a.m.B.At 4:00 p.m.C.At the midnight.D.At 4:00 a.m.19.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A.In the USA guests tend to feel they are highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner partyis expended only three or four days before the party date.B.There id no misunderstanding between people from different cultures about the conceptof time.C.It may be considered foolish to make an appointment well in advance in the USA.D.Being on time is highly valued in America.20.From the passage we can infer that ____________.A.it ’s a matter of life or death if you call someone in daytimeB. the meaning of time differs in different parts of the worldC. it makes no difference in the US whether you are early or late for a businessparty D. if a person is late for a date, he needn ’tmake any explanationIV . There are times when most of us would rather eat sweets and ice cream than meat and rice. Sweets and ice cream are not bad for the stomach if we .eat them at the end of a meal. If we eat them before a meal, they may take away our appetite (胃口). It is important for us to eat our meal at the same time each day. When we feel hungry, it is a sign that our bodies need food. When we feel angry or excited, we may not want to eat. When we are worried, we may not want to eat, either. A long time ago; in England, some judges used to decide whether a man was telling the truth by giving him some dry bread. If the man could not swallow the bread, it was a sign that he wasn't telling the truth. He was telling a lie. Although this seems very strange and rather foolish, it is indeed an excellent way of finding out the truth. A man who is worrying about something has difficulty in swallowing anything dry. Because when he is worrying, he loses his appetite and does not want to eat.11. Passage 1 Today is an extraordinary day for me. When I boarded the plane to New York, I started my adventure to China. Next school year I will study as an exchange student in China. My flight to China was the longest journey that I have ever had. I went to the Boston airport really early to catch the 8:32 AM flight. When I got onto the plane, I found it was a very small plane. But the flight was only one hour so it wasn ’t too bad. I made the connecting flight in New York. I had to hurry since there was only one hour for me to make the connection. When I rushed to the boarding gate, I was told that our flight was delayed due to poor weather conditions. Fortunately, I had told my host family in advance to check the latest information of my flight. When I got on board the plane an hour later, everything turned out smooth and pleasant. Finally I met my host family at the airport. Mr. Han Dongping, the father, works as general manager of a company and his son, Xiaolin, is a college sophomore majoring in Computer Science. They were both kind and friendly. It was very nice of them to meet me at the airport. As my first day in China, today marks the first step that I have taken to realize my dream. I know there would be hardships of living in China, but I am sure it is going to be a valuable experience of a lifetime.
