4.【Unit1Period4】及答案解析
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
We live in a technological society where most goods are mass-produced by unskilled labor.Because of this, most people think that craft(手艺)no longer exists.
One of the ways these people wrongly support their view is by pointing to100-year-old homes which are still solid, and arguing that it is the craftsmanship that is responsible for their durability(持久性).“Homes i n those days were well-built,”they say.No doubt thesehomes were well-built,but what these people have done is mix up the quality of material used in the house with the quality of the craftsmanship.
Homes today could be built to last just as long as those old homes if people were willing or able to pay the price. For example, more people can no longer afford solid oak stairways, although they were once fairly common in older homes.Nor can they afford the high labor cost of employing a carpenter to build the stairway.Yet if someone can pay the high cost, there are still plenty of carpenters around able to make those stairways. And not only would these carpenters know how to build them, they would probably do a better job than carpenters of old days.
One thing the modern carpenter has which enables him to do a better job is much more advanced tools.Such tools as laser beams and power planes help them lay out a house better and make more precise cuts(精确切割)on the wood. Also,it is not uncommon any more to find carpenters with college degrees and carpenters with a solid knowledge of mathematics, which would enable them to deal with more difficult house designs.
The problem of modern quality, then, really boils down to the problem of material, for the modern carpenter is just as able to produce craftsmanship as the carpenter of fifty years ago,but only if given proper material.

课后阅读训练十三Unit 4Period 1Ⅰ. 阅读理解AGlobal warming is the process of earth’s atmosphere heating up.Over the last 100 years, the average temperature of earth’s atmosphere has gone up 1 degree Fahrenheit. The weather has not changed exactly the same way in every area of the planet. But scientists think that the rise in average temperature is already affecting the earth’s climate. Many scientists now believe that global warming is caused by cutting down trees, producing more trash, and polluting the environment and so on. Many scientists believe that the biggest cause of global warming is new human technologies that release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The greenhouse effect is not new. Certain gases in the atmosphere, like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane, make it hard for heat energy to go into space. In the past, the climate didn’t change much because nature produced just the right amount of greenhouse gases to deal with it. Today, most scientists are pretty sure that the rising tempera ture can’t be blamed on nature. Ever since the industrial revolution in the 1700s, humans have relied on machines for daily life. And many of those machines give off a lot of greenhouse gases. An increase in the release of greenhouse gases from human activities is throwing nature off balance. The climate is a very complicated thing, but many scientists agree that the rising atmospheric temperature has already damaged the environment. Sheets of ice, called glaciers, are melting in Antarctica and other parts of the globe. As glaciers break off and melt into the oceans, they are adding warm water to the oceans and causing the sea level to rise.Over the past 100 years, the sea level has risen 6~8 inches around the world. That means land along the coasts is beginning to disappear under water. Bigger and warmer oceans are also adding to other weather problems caused by pollution in the atmosphere. Some places have received more rain, others have had bigger storms and a few areas in the world have experienced unusual droughts.【语篇概述】本文主要讲述了全球变暖的原因及影响。

A 1-metre increase over the same period would cause $31.6 million in losses there.A more comprehensive 2009 study by the Pacific Institute, an environmental think tank, concluded that nearly 500,000 people and $100 billion worth of property along California’s entire coast were at risk of severe flooding from rising sea levels this century unless new safeguards were put in place. The San Francisco State University researchers said their findings could guide policymakers when they consider future shorefront development. 2021-2022学年高中英语人教版选修六练习:Unit 4 课时跟踪练(一) Word版含解析
课时跟踪练(一) Warming Up & Reading — Pre reading Ⅰ.阅读理解AYou might think that “global warming” means nothing more than a rise in the world's temperature. But rising sea levels caused by it have resulted in the first evacuation (撤离) of an island nation the citizens of Tuvalu will have to leave their homeland.During the 20th century, the sea level rose 8-12 inches. As a result, Tuvalucountry'shas experienced lowland flooding of salt water that has polluted thedrinking water.Paani Laupepa, a Tuvaluan government official, reported to the Earth Policy Institute that the nation has suffered an unusually high number of fierce storms in the past ten years. Many scientists connect higher surface water temperatures resulting from global warming to greater and more damaging storms.Laupepa expressed dissatisfaction with the United States for refusing to sign the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement calling for industrialized nations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions (导致温室效应的气体排放), which are a main cau se of global warming. “By refusing to sign the agreement, the US has effectively taken away the freedom of future generations of Tuvaluans to live where their forefathers have lived for thousands of years.” Laupepa told the BBC.Tuvalu has asked Australia and New Zealand to allow the gradual move of its people to both countries.Tuvalu is not the only country that is vulnerable (易受影响的) to rising sea levels. Maumoon Gayoon, president of the Maldives, told the United Nations that global warming has made his c ountry of 311,000 an “endangered nation”.语篇解读:本文主要叙述了全球变暖对于某些岛国,特殊是Tuvalu造成的恶劣影响。

Today “pointillism”to refer to paintings similar towith no derisive connotations(嘲弄之意). Some people still use the term “divisionism”pointillism, but this term is more exactly used to highlight the technical color theory that is employed in many suchpaintings. In a typical pointillist painting, you might see bright colors. In fact, these bright colors are combined by tiny dotsof yellow, red and blue. By using the combination of dots of primary colors, painters can create the illusion(错觉)thatthey are using many more colors than they are. The viewer’s eyes and brain could be amazed by this kind of illus Pictures in magazines and newspapers are printed in a method similar to pointillism. Additionally, electronicscreens like TVs use a similar technique. (人教版)高中英语选修六课后阅读训练: 一 Unit 1 Period 1 (含答案)
课后阅读训练一Unit 1Period 1Ⅰ. 阅读理解AWatercolor is the oldest paints known. It dates back to the early cave men who discovered they could add life like qualities to drawings of animals and other figures on the walls of caves by mixing the natural colors found in the earth with water.Fresco(壁画), one of the greatest of all art forms, is done with watercolor. It is created by mixing paints and water and applying these to wet plaster(灰泥). Of the thousands of people who stand under Michelangelo’s heroic c eiling in the Sistine Chapel, very few know that they are looking at perhaps the greatest watercolor painting in the world. The invention of oil painting by the Flemish masters in the fifteenth century made fresco painting go downhill, and for the next several centuries watercolor was used mainly for doing sketches(草图)or as a tool for study. It was not until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that English painters put back watercolor as a serious art form. The English have a widely-known love for outdoor and also small private pictures. The softness of watercolor had a remarkably strong attraction for them. The popularity of watercolor continued to grow until the twentieth century. The United States passed England as the center for watercolor, producing such well-known watercolor artists as Thomas Eakins and Andrew Wyeth.【语篇概述】本文主要介绍了水彩画的发展历程。
