Unit 3 On a rainy dayHonorable judges, my dear fellow teachers,Good morning! I’m Chen Zijing from Xiasha primary school. It’s a great honor for me to present my thinking of giving a lesson here. What I am going to present today is Unit 3 On a rainy day Part A from Primary English for China, Book 9. I will try to make my presentation understandable.1. Analysis of the teaching material(1) Status and function.Unit 3 Part A is a dialogue. It mainly focuses on the study of the new words and phrases of this unit by practicing the old sentence structures “what’s the weather like?” and “what can we do?”. This design can not only help the pupils to revise what they’ve already learned, but also simplify the study of new words and phrases to make it easier to understand.(2) Teaching aims:Based on the analysis of the status and function of the teaching material, 3 targets from different aspects are presented as follows: A. Knowledge aim:The pupils can have good mastery over the following phrasesand sentence structures.Phrases:watch a film / surf the internet / listen to music / play the piano / call a friend / play chessSentence structures:What’s the weather like?It’s…What can we do on a rainy day?We can…We can’t…B. Ability aim:1. To develop th e pupils’ abilities of listening and speaking.2. To train the pupils’ abilities of working in groups.3. To foster the pupils’ abilities of communication.C. Emotion aim:1. To foster pupils’ consciousness of good co-operation and proper competition.2. T o enhance the pupils’ interest in English and help them to build up their confidence of learning English well.3. To provide the pupils with fun and joy while learning English.(3) Main point:To help pupils ask and answer the question “What can we do ona rainy day?” and make sure they can express the phrases and sentences correctly.(4) Difficult point:1. To enable pupils to study in groups and co-operate skillfully.(To co-operate, the pupils are able to learn how to help each other to finish the task together, and they can effectively check their learning result. Also, every pupil is involved in the activities.)2. To create a carefree English language atmosphere anddevelop the pupils’ interest in English.(It is very important because if only we arouse the pupils’ interest, they’ll have the passion of using English as a tool in their daily life.)2. Analysis of the pupilsIn my class, many pupils have worse foundations of English. Some of them, came here from their hometown this school year, didn’t learned any English at all before. Although this lesson isn’t difficult, I have to extremely carefully explain every detail to them in order to let all of them understand.3. Teaching methodology and learning methodTask-based language teaching method and Communicative language teaching method will be applied to stimulate the pupils’interest in English, to create authentic situations and design operable and practicable tasks for the pupils to acquire the language and prompt them to use the language in real communication through drilling and practice of listening, speaking, discussing, co-operating, acting and singing. The teaching contents are arranged in this way: from simplicity to complicated, from easy to difficult. The pupils are guided to apply what they learn in the class in their daily communication through the drilling and interaction between the teacher and the pupils and then leading the pupils to talk each other.4. Teaching proceduresStep one: Warm upAs the beginning, they will sing a song “How is the weather” with doing actions. This TPR activity helps to arouse the pupils’ interest. Besides, it is important to form a better English learning surrounding for the pupils by singing a song. This attractive song is not a new one; the rhythm is familiar to them. So, they can easily involve in the lesson. Also, it provides a situation to review learned knowledge for the next step.Step two: RevisionFirst, I’m going to show some pictures of weather and ask the pupils what is the weather like. Then write these words on the board. These words have been taught in Book 5 and Book 8.Second, I prepared some questions for them as a competition ---- “What’s the weather like in spring/ summer/ autumn/ winter?” Proper competition can arouse the pupils’ interest in English learning.Why should I revise so much? For the pupils of many other primary schools, it seems not necessary. But for my pupils, the setting of this step is very important. Some of them haven’t learned it before. Also, plenty of revision of these words can help them to build up their confidence of speaking in English. And it’s help to create a communicative scene of talking about the things we can or can’t do on a rainy day.Step three: Lead inThe pupils are able to use so many words to describe different weather in different seasons. In this step, I’ll show 4 seasons with pictures and ask them “Which seasons do you like best? And why?”, leading them to answer “I like… because I can…”. In the way of talking about their favorite season and the reason, I naturally lead my teaching into next step.Step three: PresentationIn this step, first I create a good communicative scene. I suppose it’s raining outside. I’ll show some pictures and ask “What can wedo on a rainy day?” The pupils may answer me “On a rainy day, we can listen to music / watch a film / play the piano / call our friends / surf the Internet / play chess”. These are the 6 new phrases we’re going to learned. To present the key phrases one by one is much easier for the pupils to learn and grasp the meanings. What else’s of importance is that I need to emphasize the pronunciation of each word while teaching.Learning with pictures helps changing the boring lesson into a vivid one. Communicating between the teacher and the pupils help to provide chances for the pupils to practice oral English, and in this way, it helps them to build up their confidence of learning English well. Also, it makes an example for the next step, the communication between 2 pupils.Step four: PracticeAfter the pupils get familiar with the new knowledge, I have got 4 activities for them to practice these new phrases and sentences.1. The pupils work in pairs and ask each other “What can we do on a rainy day?” This is the simplest activity, for I’ve showed an example at last step. And the practice between 2 pupils gives them more opportunities to use language, like they would in real life situations.2. I’ll teach Part A. Let the pupils watch the video first, then, read after the video for once, and read together for once, at last, role play the dialogue.Through this activity, the pupils can develop their abilities of listening, reading and cognizing of the new phrases and sentences. The video can provide a vivid situation for the pupils to understand the dialogue and the relationships between people better.3. Little reporter:I’ll firstly tell them that in our spare time, we can do many things. We can surf the internet/ wash clothes/ play in the playground/ listen to music/ call a friend/ watch a film/ play the piano/ paint our houses/ play chess/ visit the zoo. But if it is rainy outside, what are the things we can do or we can not do? I’d give them some time to think about it by themselves, and then, choose a pupil to come to the front and be a teacher to interview the others: What are the things we can/ cannot do? After the discussion in this way, the pupils will master the sentence structures much better. And by the way, I think I need to give them my opinions about this after the pupils have talked about their ideas.This activity is difficult than the first two, while it is easy than the next one. It also shows how to interview others and paves the road for the next activity.4. I design a survey “what can we do on a rainy day?” for the pup ils. Work 4 in a group first, a group leader asks and the other three answer. At last, I’ll ask some of them to talk about their group plans.Do a surveyTask-based teaching method is used here to develop pupils’ ability of communication. At the same time, their ability of co-operation will be well trained, too.Step five: consolidationAt the end of this lesson, I think it’s available to use 2 minutes to let the pupils think over what we have learned today. This is the first revision of this lesson in class.Step six: HomeworkWriting: What can we do on a rainy day?In class, the pupils practiced the skill of listening and speaking; after class, they’ll practice the skill of writing. Also, this writing task can check the result of the pupils’ study in this lesson.。
