English Grammar and Academic Writing Style

Course Reflection

This course introduced me to editing and writing styles, and I have learnt a lot in the short semester. Some concepts in the course were familiar but in more formal and more precise forms. The first time, I began to pay attention to my sentences proactively instead of writing them casually regardless of the readers’ concerns. Every class was substantial to me. From lower order concerns to higher order concerns, from tense, voice and punctuation to style and organization, I discovered the pleasure of writing and editing. By using transitions and making clear topic sentences, I can write in a better organization. And by controlling the pace and focus of my sentences, I can do better in converting the ideas inside my head into a real essay.

Apart from writing and editing, the course also guided me to find many useful tools. For example, the thesaurus website is an awesome helper. Furthermore, when I searched for a good writing example, I found many interesting articles, some of which were typically “too long didn’t read” to me a month ago. However, now I have learnt to enjoy and appreciate them, thinking about how to improve my own writings out of these articles. This is what I have learnt through the course.
