1928年9月11日，通用公司在纽约试播了《女 王信使》。这是世界上第一部初步意义上的电 视剧，标志着人类历史上一个全新的戏剧类型 的诞生。 在1930年代，NBC和CBS两大广播巨头进行了 大量有益的尝试，实验性地播出作品，大部分 根据百老汇戏剧和经典改编而成，并成立了自 己的电视台。1939年4月30日，NBC公开播放 电视，标志着美国电视正式播出。 1947年5月，NBC推出了第一部直播电视剧栏 目《克拉福特电视剧场》，这是一个诗选型电 视剧，它的首部作品是《双门》(Double Door)。延至随后的50年代，直播剧场仍是电 视剧的主流。这种栏目道具简单，由特写镜头 和现场表演构成。因此，它特别强调演员和台 词的作用，人物的表情至关重要。
