2023-2024学年四川省成都市第七中学 (高新校区)高一上学期10月月考英语试题If you’re interested in pushing yourself academically while experiencing college life, our Summer Programs for Pre-College Students (SPP) can be ideal for you. In the programs, you will be able to make friends with fellow students, engage in social activities around the city and on campus, and experience pre-college summer study at one of the world’s top teaching and research universities. Our long-running summer term pre-college offerings include a choice of one-, two-, three-, and six-week programs that prepare you for success in college. With five exciting and challenging pre-college summer programs to choose from, you can earn college credit, discover a new subject area, perform cutting-edge research in university labs, or immerse yourself in hands-on learning.Academic lifeSPP invites you to join other highly motivated teens from 87 countries in our summer programs for high school students — and take the leap into college life and academics, which enables you to take on new academic challenges, explore a variety of interests and consider possible majors. You can take college courses alongside undergraduates either on campus or online. And you can also earn up to eight college credits by conducting in-depth STEM research with individual instructors or as part of a group project. Resident program assistants provide guidance, coordinate and lead social activities, ranging from group activities that include comedy shows to field trips.Your hard work will be combined with social events and fun activities —and you’ll still have time for your own adventures on campus! Email the SPP office at ******************.1. What does SPP aim to do?A.To help college students to achieve academic success.B.To provide admission guidelines for pre-college students.C.To get high school students well-prepared for college life.D.To encourage students to participate in hands-on learning.2. What are students supposed to do to earn the required credits?A.Carry out STEM research. B.Attend various seminars.C.Finish the courses online. D.Join in experiential learning.3. What can we know about students living on campus?A.They can organize social activities. B.They will have access to a single room.C.They are provided with good security. D.They are advised to direct comedy shows.“I can’t connect with your characters.”I kept hearing the same feedback and was unable to understand why and not sure what to do. I was a character-driven writer. How could I mess up the one thing I was supposed to be good at? I was determined to convince my agent that these characters were real. After all, I knew they were real. My main character Lotus had lived inside me for years. I just needed to clarify her on the page.I wrote and edited for a year, trying to respond to this agent’s feedback. But Lotus’ personality began to disappear. I tried to have her make “better” decisions, wear smarter fashion, and have more friends, as my agent said she acted “immature” and was “isolated”. And when this agent ultimately parted ways with me, I felt like I had failed. Now with time and distance, I realize I tried to fit Lotus into a neurotypical style to please my agent. And as a result, Lotus lost her Lotus-ness.When that agent discouraged me from writing Lotus as autistic(自闭的), he said that would make Lotus seem more “vulnerable(脆弱的)” or an “obvious victim”. I didn’t want Lotus to seem vulnerable. Lotus’ autism is what makes her powerful, I tried to explain. But from a neurotypical perspective, Lotus’ autism could only be seen as a weakness.Unsure of how to convince my agent of the strength and power autistic women hold, I began to write Lotus as “neurotypical”. And I failed miserably. After all, what do I know about being neurotypical? My whole life, autism was my default. Not being diagnosed until 2020, I assumed the way I saw the world was “normal”.My current agent encourages me to write from my neurodivergent(神经多样性的) experience. With this invitation, I revisited Lotus and saw her the way I first wrote her. And when I did, the characters and the entire narrative began to make more sense.Identifying my characters as neurodivergent not only gives me joy as a writer, but it has produced my strongest writing. For so long, I’ve combatted the advice to “write what I know”, in part because I didn’t know what I actually knew. I didn’t know I was neurodivergent. But a s I mine the specificity of my lived experience, my writing is stronger. There is a power to our lived experience. It’s not a limitation on our craft, but a swinging open of the gates.4. How did the author feel when receiving the repeated response from the first agent?A.Confused. B.Convinced. C.Determined. D.Disappointed. 5. Lotus’ personality got lost because ______A.Lotus no longer lived inside the author B.the author attempted to please the agent C.the agent failed to sympathize with Lotus D.Lotus was considered childish and lonely 6. What do we know about the author?A.She regretted parting with the agent.B.She owed her success in life to autism.C.She was aware of her autism in the early years.D.She was empowered by her autistic experience.7. What has the author learned from her own experience?A.Stick to your dream despite discouragement.B.Be true to yourself and write from your heart.C.Giving in to authority is the barrier to success.D.Everyone is born an original instead of a copy.At one time, the inheritance of traditional drama was difficult. People of insight screamed “save drama”. Many celebrities and big names put down their figures and went to the community to carry out public welfare performances of opera, and did everything possible to expand the coverage of drama. In recent years, traditional Chinese culture and art has gained a foothold on short video platforms and attracted a large number of young followers thanks to the explosive growth of the short video industry. Relaxing, emotional and fragmented, these video contents perfectly match the demands of the users. With the application of new technologies such as social communication and immersive experiencing, short video platforms are seeing more users, becoming a shining spot of new Internet media.Recently, Huangmei Opera “ Female Consort Prince ” became a hit on short video platforms as a lot of young users covered the aria (咏叹调) in their own way and showed great artistic talents. The interactive platforms are expanding the charm of the traditional opera among young people.Peking Opera was also well-received on short video platforms thanks to a series of augmented reality (AR) effects. Users love to film clips with a set of virtual facial makeup, headwear and costumes. Statistics indicate that these effects were applied by more than 18 million users, most of whom were young people. In addition to Chinese operas, intangible cultural heritage items, such as embroidery, paper-cutting, printing and dyeing, shadow play works, oiled paper umbrella making, and bamboo weaving are also actively promoted on short video platforms. In a word, short video platforms are becoming an important channel to display China’s intangible cultural heritage.Short video platforms, offering a fun, popular and easy way to explore the traditional art forms, are receiving a lot of positive feedbacks from China’s young generations. The seconds, or minutes long videos, along with unlimited possibilities as well as richness of styles, have produced remarkable achievements in promoting traditional Chinese culture.8. What mainly made the inheritance of traditional drama difficult?A.The slow growth of industry. B.The insufficient coverage of drama.C.The poorly-met demands of the users. D.The severe shortage of the drama actors.9. What led to the promotion of Peking Opera on short video platform?A.The social communication. B.The set of virtual facial makeup.C.The positive feedbacks from users. D.The application of new technologies.10. Why are paper-cutting and bamboo weaving mentioned?A.To expand the charm of traditional Chinese culture.B.To prove traditional art forms are actively promoted.C.To show the current situation of these cultural heritage.D.To offer new channels to display China’s cultural heritage.11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.The Bright Future of Huangmei Opera.B.The Explosive Growth of the Short Video Industry.C.The Simple Way to Explore the Traditional Art Form.D.The Creative Combination of Culture and Technologies.Several years ago, Jeremy Clarkson, presenter of the famous BBC television programme “Top Gear” discovered that one of his guests was half German and half Irish. Immediately, he said: “That's quite a strange combination. It's like, this must be done absolutely perfectly... tomorrow”.This joke played on stereotypes (刻板印象) of the Germans as efficient and the Irish as lazy. Many people could understandably be offended by these kinds of assertions (断言).We do not know every Irish person, so how can we then conclude that every Irish person is lazy?I recently read on a website that Irish business people were described as being 'generally rather casual' and more outwardly friendly than many European counties'. German business people, on the other hand, are considered to be very direct and according to the website, they do not need a personal relationship in order to do business. Once you hear advice like this,it becomes easier to understand where jokes like the one in the first paragraph come from.So why do some people disapprove of the kind of stereotypes as seen in Clarkson's joke, but not baring an eyelid (眨眼) when it comes to generalizations. What is the difference between the two?By definition, a stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. A cultural characteristic, on the other hand, is a pattern of behaviour that is typical of a certain group. So what does this really mean? Stereotype are simply overstated assumptions about groups of people. Imagine if a tourist visited a small town in Switzerland and saw a number of locals playing the alphorn instrument, and then claimed that Swiss people can play the alphorn. This would be a stereotype! This is an overstated image of the Swiss which is based on one tourist's experience. If however, this tourist were to say that the Swiss are very punctual, this could be seen as a cultural characteristic. This is because it is a pattern of behaviour which is very typical in Switzerland: fromtheir transport system to their business meetings in this way, some people argue that generalizing another culture is not just useful. but important. Politicians always have to be mindful of the cultural characteristics of different countries. By becoming aware of different cultural characteristics, they can avoid causing offence (冒犯) in those cultures. However, others argue that generalizing cultures will always lead to offensive stereotypes. They argue that the best thing we can do is to stop generalizing cultures and start treating people as individuals. All this raises important questions: can making generalizations about groups of people be a positive thing? Or should we always avoid making broad assumptions about different groups?12. Whe n he said, “it's like, this must be done absolutely perfectly... tomorrow”,Jeremy Clarkson really meant________.A.the stereotypes of the Germans and the Irish are not so goodB.the combination of half German and half Irish is interestingC.the characteristics of the Germans and the Irish are oppositeD.the Germans will do it perfectly tomorrow while the Irish won't13. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.It's typical of the Swiss to be punctual.B.The Swiss can play the alphorn quite well.C.The Irish people are considered as lazy, direct and casual.D.The Germans are thought to be efficient, friendly and direct.14. Politicians think it important to generalize another culture because________.A.they don't want to offend other peopleB.generalizing will lead to offensive stereotypesC.cultural characteristics are better than stereotypesD.they think different cultural characteristics are useful15. The main purpose of this passage is to________.A.illustrate the importance of making generalizationsB.show it is wrong to play jokes on stereotypes of different peopleC.tell us the differences between stereotypes and cultural characteristicsD.discuss whether it is good to make generalizations about groups of people“Just think positively!”“It could be worse.”“You should look at the bright side!”We’ve all heard (and maybe used) these phrases without much thought. But they could be contributing to a culture of toxic(有毒的) positivity. For those new to this term, it might sound like an oxymoron(矛盾修辞法). How can positivity be toxic? Isn’t it supposed to be helpful, or “positive”, as the name suggests? 16“Toxic positivity is when somebody avoids all negative thoughts or feelings, pretending everything is going well when it is not,” explains Melissa Dowd, a therapist at PlushCare, a virtual health platform for primary care and mental health services.Whitney Goodman, the author of Toxic Positivity describes toxic positivity as the “endless pressure to be happy and pos itive, no matter what the circumstances are.” 17 It’s also something we can cause other people to experience. Expressing toxic positivity to others may look like offering them a simple solution to a complicated problem that we know nothing about, or not allowing people around you to appropriately express negative emotions.Toxic positivity causes us to suppress our emotions, which can make them worse. 18 “Although it can be helpful to look on the bright side when facing challenges,” Dowd says, “not copi ng with negative feelings in a healthy way in the moment can lead to those feelings resurfacing later in different areas of your life or as a form of anxiety.” 19 “If I feel like you’re going to dismiss me, I’m going to stop sharing how I’m feeling,” Goo dman adds.20 If you’re using toxic positivity against yourself, Goodman suggests remembering it’s OK if you’re upset about something. It’s valid if something annoys you. “Allow ourselves and other people to share when they’re going through a difficult time,” she says. Dowd adds that it’s essential that “we all learn to cope with and process our emotions in a healthy way as opposed to avoiding how we feel” as life’s stressors continue to rise. For example, instead of simply saying “Just think positively,”we’d better say “Sometimes bad things happen. How can I help?”This Too Shall PassWhen my family moved to Ohio over the summer, I feared attending another new school and knowing no one because I was able to expect what was coming. My dad was a used car salesman. Every Thursday night, he would head off to Shreveport, LA for an auction (拍卖会). Most of the time, I drove a car over there for him so he could sell it at the auction. One day I was riding with my dad when he noticed a hitch-hiker (搭便车的人) with a backpack. Without hesitation, he pulled the car over and offered him a ride. Dad asked him his name, and proceeded to talk to him about all sorts of things. Dad asked him where he was going. The hitch-hiker told him that he was heading for the west. I can’t recall why but he told Dad a lot of things that had occurred to him and that persuaded him to make that decision. He talked about the tragic events that occurred to him several years before. He was in low spirits, but I could see that the hitch-hiker’s attitude was changing as someone was really listening to him.We drove 45 minutes before the hitch-hiker got off. We pulled over and Dad told him to keep his head up and things would start looking up for him soon. He reached into his pocket and handed the hitch- hiker a twenty-dollar bill. The guy smiled. He nearly lit up right there on the cold, dark highway. We drove on and my dad did not say a single thing. I was still completely surprised by what I had just witnessed. I was always told by everyone never to pick up a hitch-hiker and yet my dad did it every single time he saw one. While reflecting upon that story I came to understand that just one single kind act could change someone’s life. And I am sure that my father’s deed made that poor man’s day.4.What made the hitch-hiker become less upset?A.The writer’s father talking to him about all sorts of things.B.The writer’s father offering him a free ride.C.The writer’s father really listening to him.D.The writer’s father agreeing to drive him to his destination.5.When his father helped the hitch-hiker, the writer ___________.A.was deeply moved B.strongly disagreedC.admired his father D.couldn’t understand6.Which of the following words can be used to describe the father?A.Wealthy.B.Warm-hearted.C.Far-sighted.D.Adventurous.7.What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing this text?A.To tell a story of his father.B.To show his respect for his father.C.To prove his father is the best teacher.D.To advise people to learn from the hitch-hiker.New research suggests that dogs might be able to help save diseased citrus trees.A group of scientists trained dogs to use their sense of smell to detect a crop disease called citrus-greening. The disease has affected orange, lemon and grapefruit trees in the American states of Florida, California and Texas. The dogs can detect the disease weeks to years before it appears on tree leaves and roots, the researchers report. A study on their findings was published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The report says using dogs is also faster, less costly and more exact than having people collect hundreds of leaves for lab analysis.Timothy Gottwald is a researcher with the U. S. Department of Agriculture and a co-writer of the study. He told The Associated Press, “This technology is thousands of years old-the dog’s nose. We’ve just trained dogs to hunt new prey.”Citrus-greening is caused by a bacteria (细菌) that is spread by a tiny insect that feeds on the leaves and stems of citrus trees. Once a tree is infected (感染), there is no cure. The disease has also hurt citrus crops in Central and South America and Asia. In one experiment involving grapefruit trees in Texas, trained dogs were correct 95 percent of the time in telling the difference between newly infected trees and healthy ones. “The earlier you detect a disease, the better chance you have at stopping an epidemic (流行病) by removing infected trees,” Gottwald said.Matteo Garbelotto studies plants at the University of California, Berkeley. He says the new research shows that dogs can detect an infection well before current methods. Garbelotto has been involved in similar research but had no part in the new study.Laura Sims is a plant scientist with Louisiana Tech University. She praised the steps taken to find out if the dogs were detecting the bacteria itself or a plant’s reaction to an infection. To do that, the researchers infected different kinds of unrelated plants with the bacteria in a laboratory. The dogs were still able to pick out the infected plants.Gottwald said, “You’ve seen dogs working in airports, detecting drugs and explosives. Maybe soon you will see them working on more farms. ”8.According to the research, trained dogs can ________.A.help infected trees recover from diseases B.recognize a crop disease in its early stage C.cause fruit trees to grow faster than usual D.reduce the cost of planting some fruit trees 9.What does the underlined part “new prey” in Paragraph 4 refer to?A.Infected plants.B.Fruit trees.C.Tiny insects.D.Favourite foods. 10.Why did the researchers do experiments on unrelated plants?A.To further prove the findings.B.To explore the plant diseases.C.To present different opinions.D.To discover a plant’s reactions.11.How does Gottwald feel about the future use of this new method?A.Doubtful.B.Positive.C.Indifferent.D.Curious.The idea that richer countries are happier may seem intuitively (直觉地) obvious. However, in1974, research by economist Richard Easterlin found otherwise. He discovered that while individuals with higher incomes were more likely to be happy, this did not hold at a national level. In the United States, for example, average income per person rose steadily between 1946 and 1970, but reported happiness levels showed no positive long-term trend.; in fact, they declined (下降) between 1060 and 1970. These differences between nation-level and individual results gave rise to the term “Easterlin paradox”: the idea that a higher rate of economic growth does not result in higher long-term happiness.Having access to additional income seems to only provide a temporary surge (激增) in happiness. Since a certain minimum (最小的) income is needed for basic necessities, it’s possiblethat the happiness boost from extra cash isn’t that great once you rise above the poverty line. This would explain Easterlin’s findings in the United States and other developed countries. He argued that life satisfaction does rise with average incomes but only in the short term.Recent research has challenged the Easternlin paradox, however. In 2013, sociologists Ruut Veenhoven and Floris Vergunst conducted a study using statistics (统计数据) from the World Database of Happiness. Their analysis revealed a positive correlation between economic growth and happiness. Another study by the University of Michigan found that there is no maximum wealth threshold (门槛) at which more money stops contributing to your happiness: “If there is a satiation point, we are yet to reach it.” The study’s findings suggested that every extra dollar you earn makes you happier. With a much debate about the relationship between money and happiness, it’s clear that happiness itself is a complex concept and depends on many factors.According to psychologists (心理学家) Selin Kesebir and Shigehiro Oishi, happiness also depends on how your income compares to the people around you. They argue that a country’s economic growth only makes its citizens happier if wealth is evenly distributed (分配). In developing countries with high income inequality — where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer — average happiness tends to drop because only relatively few people benefit from the economic growth. This suggests that governments should consider conducting policies to ensure more equal distribution of wealth. The happier people are, the more productive they are likely to become, thus leading to improved economic outcomes at the individual and national levels. There is continuing debate about the link between wealth and happiness, with arguments both for and against the belief that richer countries are happier. However, it is clear that wealth alone isn’t enough to make us happy. The effect of income inequality on happiness shows that happiness is a social responsibility. We need to remember the positive effects of generosity, selflessness, and building social connections. Perhaps our focus should be less on how much money we have, and more on how we use it.12.According to the passage, Easterlin Paradox refers to ______.A.the fact that the more money, the happier people will feelB.the suggestion that money should be given the top priority(优先)C.the question how economic outcomes are distributed nationwideD.the opinion that higher income doesn’t necessarily generate happiness13.The word “satiation” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to “________”.A.satisfaction B.anxiety C.survival D.confidence 14.What is the major reason for people’s unhappiness related to money?A.Money not enough.B.Money not fairly distributed.C.Rich people richer D.Unequal money paid for equal work. 15.Which of the following might be best title of this passage?A.It’s all relative B.Easternlin paradoxC.The economics of happiness D.Rising income, rising happinessHow to Choose Extracurricular ActivitiesFrom sports to clubs to outside organizations, there are many activities to take part in outside the classroom. 16 Fortunately, it becomes quite easy once you figure out what you enjoy doing in general. ATourism wasn’t as important as it is today. In the past, only people with a good deal of money could travel on holidays to other countries. Special plane fares(费用) for tourists make travel less expensive and more attractive than ever before. One person doesn’t travel for the same reason as another. But most people enjoyseeing countries that are different from their own. They also like to meet new people and to taste new food.Tourism causes many changes in a country and in people’s lives. People build new hotels and restaurants and train native men and women as guides to show visitors interesting places. There’re new nightclubs and other amusements. International tourism is clearly a big business.21.More people travel today than in the past because______________.A.people now have spare money for travelB.traveling today is easier the in the pastC.people have become interested in travelingD.great changes have taken place in the world22.What makes travel more attractive than before?A.Modern telegraph lines make travel less expensive.B.More guides are being trained to show beautiful spots.C.Travel by air is much cheaper today.D.New hotels and restaurants have been built.23.Which of the following statements is true according to the article?A.Tourism won’t bring any changes in people’s minds.B.People have some trouble in making journey.C.Tourism causes only some changes in clothing.D.With the development of tourism, great changes have taken place in many parts in the world24.What is the best title of the passage?A.Tourism B.The Change of TourismC.The Importance of Tourism D.The Cause of Tourism ChangeBIt feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the conversation into World War III. She’ll talk about my lack of a bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major(主修) in English and communications, she nearly had a heart attack.“Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s son?”she bemoans all the time. Her co-worker’s son received a four-year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to answer except that I simply can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed co-worker’s son. I can’t be like him. I’m the type of person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve a career because I love it, not because of fame (名声) or salary.I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her say a harsh (苛刻) word to anyone or about anyone.Happy and her husband Ben, 70, have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours together working on it. Most of the neighbors watched interestingly as Ben doubled the size of their garden. As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben’s beans, we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market, Happy could be seen picking beans in her back yard.Last month, Happy and Ben invited most of the neighborhood over for an “all-day food fest”. We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn’t know what was about to take place.By 9:00 am, there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra, and squash. By 10:00 am, there was lots of laughter. We shared a lot of stories. By five o’clock, everyone was a little drunk from the wine and beer. After dinner, we played games. As we were leaving, Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with the bounty(收成)of the day, already packaged and frozen. What a delightful gift!Well, the point wasn’t so much about the food. The true gift was a day of friends enjoying one another’s company. This is a good rule to follow when you try to judge the cleverness of others by their looks and performance. Some people have minds that shine only in certain situations. A young man with an unusual gift in novel writing may find himself speechless before a pretty girl. But don’t make the mistake of thinking he might not be that clever. With a pen and paper, he can tell what he thought very well.Other people may fool you into mistakenly thinking they are clever by putting up a good front. A student who listens carefully and takes notes in class is sure to make a good impression on his teachers. But when it comes to exams, he may get scores much lower than his classmates. We may conclude that: you can’t judge someone by appearances. The only way to tell whether a person is clever or not is to get to know him by observing how he reacts to different situations. The more situations you observe, the more accurate your judgement is likely to be. So take your time. Don’t judge the book by its cover.33.The young man mentioned in the passage________________.A.is stupid B.is a good writerC.is a good student D.is successful with girls 34.According to the passage, true knowledge of a person’s cleverness comes from_______.A.the grades he gets in school B.his manners at partiesC.how he behaves in different situations D.his outward appearance 35.The passage suggests that in judging a person’s intelligence we should_____________.A.have patience and be careful B.be creativeC.make quick judgements D.give him a test第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
