These types include argumentative, persuasive, compare and contrast, cause and effect, problem and solution, descriptive, narrative, and expository essays. Each type has its own unique characteristics and requirements.Argumentative essays are written to present arguments and evidence to support a particular viewpoint or claim. These essays aim to persuade the reader to agree with the writer's opinion. For example, I once wrote an argumentative essay on the topic of animal testing, where I presented various arguments against this practice and provided evidence to support my claims.Persuasive essays, on the other hand, are similar to argumentative essays but focus more on convincing thereader to take a specific action or adopt a particular belief. These essays require a clear understanding of the subjects being compared and contrasted. In one of my compare and contrast essays, I examined the similarities anddifferences between traditional education and online education, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each.Cause and effect essays explore the reasons behind an event or phenomenon and its consequences. These essays aimto analyze the relationship between a cause and its effects. For example, I wrote a cause and effect essay on the topicof climate change, where I discussed the causes of global warming and its impact on the environment.Problem and solution essays focus on identifying a problem and proposing effective solutions. These essays require critical thinking and creativity in order to address complex issues. In one of my problem and solution essays, I discussed the problem of plastic pollution and suggested measures to reduce plastic waste and promote recycling.Descriptive essays aim to create a vivid image or impression of a person, place, object, or event. These essays use sensory details and figurative language to engage the reader's senses. Unit 8 Focus on Global WarmingKey to the ExercisesText comprehensionI.AII.1. T;2. T;3. F;4. F;5. F.III.1. Paragraph2. Because global warming may be the single largest threat to our planet(the earth). Low-lying nations could be awash in seawater, rain and drought patterns across the world could change, hurricanes could become more frequent, and El Ninos could become more intense.2. Paragraph3. Our factories, power plants, and cars burn coal and gasoline and spit out carbon dioxide, produce methane by allowing our trash to decompose in landfills and by breeding large herds of methane-belching cattle, and release nitrogen oxide by using nitrogen-based fertilizers.3. Paragraph4. The increased concentrations of greenhouse gases prevent additional thermal radiation from leaving the Earth, so cause the global warming.4. Paragraph 7. A slight increase in heat and rain in equatorial regions would increase vector-borne diseases such as malaria; more intense rains and hurricanes could cause more severe flooding and more deaths in coastal regions and along riverbeds; even a moderate rise in sea level could threaten the low-lying islands; hotter summers could lead to more cases of heatstroke, hospital admissions and deaths among vulnerable people with heart problems or respiratory problems.5. Paragraph 8 and 10. We can curb our consumption of fossil fuels and use technologies to reduce the emission of heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxides, and protect the forests in the world, and we can also advocate policies that will combat global warming over the long term, things like clean cars, environmentally responsible renewable energy technologies, and stopping the clear-cutting of valuable forests.IV.1. Global warming will probably be the most serious threat to our Earth, if we do not take into account of some other possible disasters, such as another world war, collision of our Earth with some small orbiting planet, or spread of incurable diseases.2. In terms of human health, the people of the poorer countries will suffer most, because their countries do not have money to protect them when climate changes.Structural analysisSub-ideas in the second part:1) the causes of the rising concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (Paragraphs 3 and 4)2) the effect of such concentration on climate change (Paragraphs 5 and 6)3) the potential threat of global warming to human health and survival (Paragraph 7)VocabularyI. A: I’m freezing! The forecast was for warm weather today. B: But you should always be prepared for all types of weather. A: How? You mean I should carry four sets of clothes with me every day? Well, if the weather clears up, I’m taking the afternoon off. I want to go down to the beach. B: It’s our busiest time; how can you take time off? A: No one will miss me. Anyway, if it stays cold and windy, I won’t bother. B: Even if it warms up, I don’t think it will be warm enough for the beach.

8 Arguments Against Global WarmingAdapted from The Heartland Institute Information gathered by the American Policy Roundtable/tps30info/globalwarmup.htmlThe following arguments give you an idea of what many people who disagree about the extentof global warming often claim. They feel that claiming global warming as obvious but that what is "obvious" often isn't true. These are only presented as someone who disagrees with global warming would most likely say:1. Most scientists do not believe human activities threaten to disrupt the Earth’s climate.More than 17,000 scientists have signed a petition saying, in part, “there is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth‟s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth‟s climate.”2. Our most reliable sources of temperature data show no global warming trend.Satellite readings of temperatures in the lower troposphere show no warming since readings began 23 years ago. These readings are accurate to within 0.01ºC, and are consistent with data from weather balloons. Only land-based temperature stations show a warming trend, and these stations do not cover the entire globe, are contaminated by heat generated by nearby urban development, and make mistakes.3. Global climate computer models are not good at predicting future climate changes. All predictions of global warming are based on computer models, NOT historical data. Richard A. Kerr, a writer for Science, says “climate modelers have been …cheating‟ for so long it‟s almost become r espectable.”4. The IPCC (government panel on climate change) did not prove that human activities are causing global warming.Alarmists frequently quote the executive summaries of reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a United Nations organization, to support their predictions. But the 2001 IPCC report also states that, “As well as uncertainty in initial conditions (of global warming), such predictions are also degraded by errors and uncertainties in our ability to represent ac curately the significant climate processes.”5. A small amount of global warming, should it occur, would be good to the natural world and to human civilization. This is one of the greatest arguments against global warming. Temperatures during the Medieval Warm Period (roughly 800 to 1200 AD), which allowed the Vikings to settle cold Greenland, were higher than even the worst-case scenario reported by the IPCC. The period from about 5000-3000 BC was even warmer and marked “a time when mankind began to build its first civilizations,”6. Efforts to quickly reduce human greenhouse gas emissions would be costly and would not stop Earth’s climate from changing.Reducing U.S. carbon dioxide emissions to 7 percent below 1990‟s levels by the year 2012 would require higher energy taxes and regulations causing the nation to lose 2.4 million jobs and $300 billion. Following the Kyoto Protocol by all participating nations would reduce global temperature in the year 2100 by a mere 0.14 degrees Celsius.7. Efforts by state governments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are even more expensive and threaten to bust state budgets. After raising their spending with reckless abandon during the 1990s, states now face a cumulative projected deficit of more than $90 billion. Incredibly, most states nevertheless persist in backing unnecessary and expensive greenhouse gas reduction programs. New Jersey, for example, collects $358 million a year in utility taxes to fund greenhouse gas reduction programs. Such programs will have no impact on global greenhouse gas emissions. All they do is destroy jobs and waste money.8. The best strategy to pursue is “no regrets.”The alternative to demand s for immediate action to “stop global warming” is not to do nothing. The best strategy is to invest in atmospheric research now and in reducing emissions sometime in the future if the science becomes more compelling. In the meantime, investments should be made to reduce emissions only when such investments make economic sense in their own right. The U.S. spends more on global warming research each year than the entire rest of the world combined, and American businesses are leading the way in demonstrating new technologies for reducing greenhouse gases. The Washington Post criticized global warming research, saying “The real truth is that we don't know enough to relieve global warming."。
