MANFRED. Thou false fiend, thou liest!

My life is in its last hour,-- that I know,

Nor would redeem a moment of that hour.

I do not combat against death, but thee

And thy surrounding angels; my past power

Was purchased by no compact with thy crew,

But by superior science-- penance-- daring,

And length of watching-- strength of mind-- and skill

In knowledge of our fathers when the earth

Saw men and spirits walking side by side

And gave ye no supremacy: I stand

Upon my strength-- I do defy-- deny-- 380

Spurn back, and scorn ye!--

SPIRIT. But thy many crimes

Have made thee--

MANFRED. What are they to such as thee?

Must crimes be punish'd but by other crimes,

And greater criminals?-- Back to thy hell!

Thou hast no power upon me, that I feel;

Thou never shalt possess me, that I know:

What I have done is done; I bear within

A torture which could nothing gain from thine.

The mind which is immortal makes itself

Requital for its good or evil thoughts, 390

Is its own origin of ill and end,

And its own place and time; its innate sense,

When stripp'd of this mortality, derives

No colour from the fleeting things without,

But is absorb'd in sufferance or in joy,

Born from the knowledge of its own desert.

Thou didst not tempt me, and thou couldst not tempt me;

I have not been thy dupe nor am thy prey,

But was my own destroyer, and will be

My own hereafter.-- Back, ye baffled fiends! 400

The hand of death is on me-- but not yours!

[The Demons disappear.

MANFRED.

You hypocritical devil, you liar!

I know that I’m approaching the end of my life,

And even at the last moment of my life, never will I be redeemed.

I don’t struggle to survive, but I’ll fight against you and all the fallen angels around you.

I did not rely on the alliance with all of you spirits to obtain the courage to live in the past; Instead, I got it from light of superior science, the power of penitence, adventurous experience, experience of observing the world, strength of thinking, and the skills which I learned from our ancestors who lived in the period of times when men and spirits lived together and you then had no domination or rights.

I will maintain and believe in my own strength; I do despise you.

SPIRIT.

But the crimes you have committed have made you....

MANFRED.

What do those crimes mean to species like you?

Must I be punished for my crimes only by joining you, the even greater criminals?

Go back to the hell where you belong!

I feel you have no power on me,

And I know that you will never possess me in spirits.

Because what I have done is already over and done,

I bear a torment inside which cant’t get any better because of you.

The immortal mind itself which is responsible for its good or evil thoughts,

Is its own origin of ill and end,

And it dominates its own place and time and its innate sense,

When it’s taken away the fate of death,

It can’t feel any happiness in the world any more even if it’s beautiful,

But is only deeply obsorbed in the world

where there is mere suffering and joy which it was born with.

You didn’t attract me, and nor could you.

I have not been your dupe or prey,

but actually I am my own destroyer to the past, and will be my own ruler in the future.

Just go back to the hell, you baffled devil!

It’s all up to me that I shall die or not, but not you.
