Family time is the greatest gift of holidays.I love waking up on a holiday morning knowing there is no school bus to catch. I can sleep in as late as I want! When I finally get up, I put on my comfy pajamas and fluffy slippers. Then I shuffle out to the living room and snuggle up on the couch. No need to rush around and get dressed up.On some holidays, we open presents in the morning. Birthdays and Christmas are my favorites for that. I love ripping off the colorful wrapping paper to see what surprises are inside the boxes. Even if I don't get exactly what I wanted, I'm just happy to get ANY presents at all. Presents make holidays extra special and exciting.Other holidays are more about celebrating with food. On Thanksgiving, we stuff ourselves with turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. For the 4th of July cookout, we grill hot dogs and hamburgers and have watermelon and roasted corn. I can never decide what I like eating most! The holiday feasts are always so incredibly delicious.Some of the best memories I have are from holiday parties and get-togethers. Halloween is a blast going trick-or-treating through the neighborhood with all my friends. We show off our costumes and compete to see who can get the most candy. On New Year's Eve, we go to my aunt and uncle's house and I get to stay up way past my bedtime. Dad has to get up on a really tall ladder to put Santa up there. One year, the ladder started tipping over with Dad on it! Mom had to grab the ladder to keep it from falling. Grandma makes her famous ham and sweet potato casserole. After dinner, we kids get to open one present - it's always new pajamas. Then we go home, put on our new jammies, and wait for Santa to come!I try so hard to stay awake to see if I can catch Santa in the act. But I've never made it past midnight without falling asleep. The next morning, we wake up crazy early and run downstairs to see what Santa brought! My mom is really good at decorating Easter eggs with cool designs like watercolor patterns or glitter stripes. We have an epic Easter egg hunt in the backyard every year. Sometimes my parents even put little cash prizes insidesome of the plastic eggs! One year, my dad hid one of the eggs so well that we didn't find it until the 4th of July. It was just solid chocolate inside by then - completely melted and re-solidified into one big chunk!Fourth of July is always a blast too. We have a huge cookout with hamburgers, hot dogs, and pie. At night, we get to set off all these amazing fireworks that my dad buys. The grand finale is always a gigantic show in the park down the street. We take a picnic blanket and sit on the hill to watch all the professional fireworks burst into bright colors and designs in the sky. It's breathtaking!Halloween has got to be one of the most fun holidays for a kid though. I love coming up with a clever costume idea and putting it all together myself.
