Last summer, I stayed with a British host family. One day, I was really surprised when Jeremy, the son of the family, told me that we would have toad-in-the-hole for dinner. I wasn’t sure whether we were going to eat a real toad in a hole. If so, how terrible! I joined them at dinner time with butterflies in my stomach. To my astonishment, a dish of sausages cooked in Yorkshire pudding (a mix that tastes a bit like pancakes) was served on the table, and it tasted delicious. It turned out that toad-in-thehole is a typical dish for a British dinner, and there’s no toad! What an amazing experience! It was interesting to try such yummy food with a strange name.

By looking at these changes, we can have a deeper understanding of the language, from the present day back to its ancient roots. While modern English shares many similar words with romance languages(罗曼斯语), like French and Spanish, most of those words were not originally part of it. Instead, they started coming into the language with the Norman invasion of England in 1066. When the French-speaking Normans conquered(征服) England and became its ruling class, they brought their speech with them, adding a large number of French and Latin words to the English language formerly spoken there. The English used in Beowulf(《贝奥武夫》) probably doesn't look very familiar, but it might be more recognizable if you know some German. That's because Old English belongs to the Germanic language family, first brought to the British Isles(不列颠群岛) in the 5th and 6th centuries by the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. The language they spoke would become known as Anglo-Saxon. Viking invaders(维京侵略者) in the 8th to 11th centuriesadded more borrowings from Old Norse(古斯堪的那维亚语) into the mix.It may be hard to see the roots of modern English underneath all the words borrowed from French, Latin, Old Norse and other languages. But the amazing fact is that nearly 3 billion people around the world, many of whom cannot understand each other, are speaking the same words shaped by 6000 years of history.1. What's the passage mainly about?A. The introduction of modem English.B. The study of Old English.C. The origin of modem English.D. The discussion of the usage of English words.2. Why does English share many similar words with French?A. The words were part of English at first and then were borrowed into French.B. The Normans brought those words to the English language.C. The words were brought to the British Isles in the 5th and 6th centuries.D. Viking invaders added those words to English.3. What do the underlined words "has evolved" probably mean?A. has been passed downB. has been inventedC. has gradually developedD. has changed completely4. Which of the following is correct according to the passage?A. English is a single language.B. English has its only root in romance languages.C. English is actually a mixture of several languages.D. There are 3 billion English speakers in the world.CJennifer Mauer has needed more willpower than the typical college student to pursue her goal of earning a nursing degree. That willpower bore fruit when Jennifer graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and became the first in her large family to earn a bachelor's degree.Mauer, of Edgar, Wisconsin, grew up on a farm in a family of 10 children. Her dad worked at a job away from the farm, and her mother ran the farm with the kids. After high school, Jennifer attended a local technical college, working to pay her tuition(学费), because there was no extra money set aside for a college education. After graduation, she worked to help her sisters and brothers pay for their schooling.Jennifer now is married and has three children of her own. She decided to go backto college to advance her career and to be able to better support her family while doing something she loves: nursing. She chose the UW-Eau Claire program at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield because she was able to pursue her four-year degree close to home. She could drive to class and be home in the evening to help with her kids. Jennifer received great support from her family as she worked to earn her degree: Her husband worked two jobs to cover the bills, and her 68-year-old mother helped take care of the children at times.Through it all, she remained in good academic standing and graduated with honors. Jennifer sacrificed(牺牲) to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her kids and missing important events to study. "Some nights my heart was breaking to have to pick between my kids and studying for exams or papers," she says. However her children have learned an important lesson witnessing their mother earn her degree. Jennifer is a first-generation graduate and an inspiration to her family—and that's pretty powerful.1. What did Jennifer do after high school?A. She helped her dad with his work.B. She ran the family farm on her own.C. She supported herself through college.D. She taught her sisters and brothers at home.2. Why did Jennifer choose the program at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield?A. To take care of her kids easily.B. To learn from the best nurses.C. To save money for her parents.D. To find a well-paid job there.3. What did Jennifer sacrifice to achieve her goal?A. Her health.B. Her time with family.C. Her reputation.D. Her chance of promotion.4. What can we learn from Jennifer's story?A. Time is money.B. Love breaks down barriers.C. Hard work pays off.D. Education is the key to success.DPhysical education, or PE, isn't required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn't offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education? The answer is certainly "yes".Today many people don't do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and makingfitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.High school isn't that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to students' studies and lives. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school. The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity(肥胖症). Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger. The increase in activities that don't get teens to move around, such as computer games, means many teens don't get their required exercise. PE classes act as a public health measure(措施) to encourage physical activity and help teens have healthy weight. Not doing sports increases teens' hazard of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be prevented by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.According to the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic(学业的) performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.1. According to Paragraph 2, what does physical education in high school mean?A. Making teens attach importance to exercise later.B. Removing the stress faced by teens at school.C. Getting teens to encourage adults to exercise.D. Helping teens learn to make good plans.2. What does the underlined word "hazard" in Paragraph 5 mean?A. Happiness.B. Risk.C. Safety.D. Sadness.3. According to the PCFSN, doing sports _____.A. means making students choose between sports and studiesB. helps students make good use of all their timeC. means students adjust to their studies betterD. helps students do better in their studies4. What is the text mainly about?A. Why high school students should receive physical education.B. Why some schools consider physical education important.C. How schools can help students love doing sports.D. How high school students can live a better life.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
