All the kids get a full week off from school and our parents usually take some time off work too so we can do lots of fun family activities together.The holiday celebrates the founding of the People's Republic of China back in 1949 after years of war and chaos. On October 1st, 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong declared the establishment of the new communist China in Tiananmen Square in Beijing. That's why every year on October 1st there is a huge parade and celebration in Beijing with military troops marching, cool tanks and missile displays, and dancers and performers putting on shows. It's broadcast all over TV so we can watch it at home.Even though the big festivities are in Beijing, we have lots of National Day traditions and celebrations where I live too. One of my favorite things is all the decorations that go up around town. There are national flags and red lanterns hung up everywhere - on buildings, lampposts, stores, you name it. Red is such a lucky color in China. The city puts up these really neat light displays too with illuminated Chinese characters spelling out holiday greetings.Another tradition I love is eating mooncakes! Even though the Mid-Autumn Festival just ended, these dense pastries filled with lotus seed paste or other yummy fillings are so good that we keep eating them for National Day too. My grandma always buys a bunch of fancy mooncake gift boxes to give out. One year she let me hand them out and I felt so grown up!My friends and I have a National Day tradition of our own - we have a casual sports competition in the park near my house. We divide into two teams and play fun games like tug-of-war, three-legged races, sack races, you get the idea. The winning team gets small prizes like candy or stationery. It's not about the prizes though, it's just a fun way to spend time together during the holiday.Speaking of the park, that's where a lot of the community festivities happen. There are always photo exhibitions set up displaying pictures of China's accomplishments over the past year. Things like new buildings that were constructed, athletes who won big competitions, scientific discoveries, that kind of thing. My little brother's photo was included one year when his elementary school art project won a city-wide contest!There are also cultural performances in the park, like dancing, singing, martial arts demonstrations, and even tiny opera shows.I went with my mom and grandma a couple years ago to see a troupe perform sections of one of the famous Peking Operas in full costume and makeup. It was really incredible, even if I didn't totally understand what was going on in the storyline.In the evenings, there are such cool fireworks displays and festivalsgoing on all over the city. People even set off lots of smaller fireworks in neighborhoods and parks. One year our family's celebration got rained out, which was kind of a bummer. But we still had a blast setting off sparklers in our apartment! Just had to be really careful not to burn anything or set off the smoke alarm.Some of my friends' families like to go traveling over the National Day holiday, but my family prefers to stick around the city. That way we can soak up all the local festivities and not miss out on any of the fun traditions. Don't get me wrong, I do really enjoy the few times we've gone on National Day trips before. A couple years ago we visited my grandparents' hometown in Sichuan Province and attended their village's holiday celebration. It was amazing to see the Lion Dances, Dragon Dances, and outdoor operas they put on. Such a cool cultural experience.But most years, we keep things low-key and just spend quality time together as a family. We'll make desserts liketangyuan (sweet rice balls) or jidangao (egg cakes) at home, then maybe catch an Independence Day-themed animation movie in the theaters. My favorite is still the one about the Monkey King - such an iconic character from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West.
