• Area of standing crops that has been flattened in the form of a circle or more complex pattern. No general cause of crop circles has been identified although various natural and unorthodox explanations have been put forward; maybe many of the circles are known to have been hoaxes
Unit 1
Welcome to the unit
oup discussion
In your opinion, what is the most beautiful thing one can experience? Why?
What have you known about Albert Einstein? Why was he so great?
------what kind of attitude should we adopt towards mysteries?
Have you ever heard of something not only interesting and attractive but also unexplained and unsolved by today’s science and technology?
Einstein contributed more than any other scientist to the modern vision of physical reality. His special and general theories of relativity are still regarded as the most satisfactory model of the large-scale universe that we have. He solved lots of problems mysterious to us before…
• Example: UFO stands for Unidentified
Flying Objects, that is, objects, apparently moving in the sky, which we cannot identify. There are lots of reports about UFOs. Some say they are aliens visiting us in their spacecraft, and some say they are military test aircraft, while others say they do not actually exist. Since we have never seen one with our own eyes and there is no definite scientific explanation for it, we are not certain whether UFOs really exist, but we believe everything will be clear in the future.
The Bermuda Triangle
Pair work
1.Do the four pictures have something in common? If so, what is it? 2.Can scientists explain these phenomena? 3.How do you feel about them?
Do you want to know his opinion of the most beautiful thing one can experience?
The most beautiful thing one can experience is mysteries . They are truly the basis of all arts and sciences .
What do the letters UFO stand for? unidentified flying objects
Are they really from another planet?
Do you believe in UFOs? What might be the most acceptable explanation for UFOs? Aliens from space. Military test aircraft. Some UFOs are alien, some are test aircraft. UFOs are evidence of human space travel. UFOs are neither alien nor test aircraft. UFOs don’t exist.
Stonehenge
Prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain, southern England, consisting of two concentric circles(同心圆) of large standing stones, the heaviest of them weighing probably about 45 tons, one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world, added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986, built between 2800 and 1500 BC , thought to have been an astronomical calendar(天文历) or a temple to the sun.
Yeti Abominable snowman
What do Yetis look like?
Half-man and half-beast
Strong, hairy…
• The Yeti or Abominable Snowman, also called the “missing link” (推想中从类人猿 发展到人类之间的过渡生物), is said to be a humanlike monster that is supposed to live in Himalayas, the highest mountain range in the world. Several sightings, mainly of footprints, have been reported by western explorers throughout the years. Yet none of them have been supported with evidence in any way.
Group discussion:
• What other unexplained things do you know about? • If you saw a UFO or a Yeti, what would you do?
• Example: They are mysterious because no satisfactory answers have been offered to explain them so far. Though these mysteries have puzzled people for a long time, they still show great interest in them. People feel puzzled by the mysteries…
The chances of seeing a UFO are greater for those people who live in small towns or in the country and are outside late at night. UFOs come in all shapes and sizes. Some are only small spots of light that move in strange patterns across the night sky Some can be seen in the daytime. They are often said to be disk- or saucershaped.

Unit 1 Tales of the unexplainedThere are many people who often discuss whether aliens(外星人) are real or not. There are also some different stories about aliens.Do aliens really exist in space? When you think of aliens, what es to your mind?Whatever pictures we have of aliens in our mind is due to the influence from newspapers, the Internet and the TV.There could be life forms as tiny(极小的) as some microorganisms or as large as giant dinosaurs.Scientists argue that the universe is far too huge and it is very unlikely that only our planet can support life. There must be other planets which support life but are unknown to us.One of the organizations working on outer space life is SETI.Astrophysicist(天体物理学家) Carl Sagan believes the presence of life outside the Earth.Frank Drake, founder of SETI,is another scientist who has devoted his life to providing the presence of life outside the Earth. Many other research projects have been and are still being carried out to collect evidence of life outside the Earth. In fact,Br uno D’Argenio and Giuseppe Geraci have found evidence of life in 4.5 billionyearold meteorites(陨石).Just as there are people who support the existence of life outside the Earth, there are others who think of it as a farfetched idea. They argue,if there is life outside the Earth, why have we not been able to get any hard evidence till today? 根据上文判断正(T)误(F)1.The scientists are sure that there are some aliens outside the Earth.(F) 2.People have different opinions on whether there is life outside the Earth.(T)Period One Wele to the unit & ReadingⅠ. 重点短语1.step up加紧,加强,促进2.due to由于,因为3.show up出现,现身4.take charge of负责,掌管5.make up编造,杜撰;构成6.look into调查Ⅲ.重点句式1.That’s why...那就是……的原因。
