Unit 1 Food for thought
Period ⅠStarting out & Understanding
ideas

Period ⅢDeveloping ideas
课堂合作探究Victory always belongs_to the people.

Unit 1 Food for thought
I was born and grew up in Sichuan. Hot pot is an importantpart of my life. However, when I went to the UK, I found thatit was expensive to have hot pot in town (more than 100 yuanper person, without drinks), while the locals know nothingabout hot pot. They don’t even know that lotus root(莲藕) is a vegetable. So I came up with an idea. It was to invite some international friends to a hot pot dinner. The dinner helped me to spread our culture such as the obsession(喜爱) of Sichuan people with spicy(辛辣的) food and Chinese table manners. It also gave me an opportunity to make friends.I first showed my talent for cooking for my best friend, a German girl. I took my rice cooker, the container(容器) that I used to make hot pot.My friend took out her gift—a couple of Chinese bowls—and she told me that this would be the first time she had used them. She had different kinds of vinegar but not the Chinese kind. Since we didn’t have any, we replaced(代替) it with another kind. The taste was even better. Her mom tried a piece of lotus root. I can still remember her face when she put it into her mouth—she was doubtful about it. But it was a wonderful hot pot night. When you go to a foreign country, a good way to make more friends is to introduce your own culture through something special, like food. It was so easy to use my card for a small purchase(购买). For me, I got a lot of satisfaction from fast food. One day I realized that I was spending $40 a week on fast food. This was a lot of iced coffee and hamburgers! I decided to give myself a tight budget to reduce my consumption. Every Monday I placed an envelope with $20 in my purse. That was my fast food budget for the whole week. If there was anything left over at the end of the week, it would be mine to save or spend. If I spent all of the money during the week, there would be no more fast food that week. The budget made me more mindful of my purchases. Instead of purchasing a large drink from Sonic, I would purchase a small one. It was still satisfying but not nearly as expensive. Instead of eating a wholemeal, I would pick the part that I actually wanted. I never really felt unhappy because it was a wise choice to spend or save with each purchase. The envelope budget kept me honest. I had a clear idea how much money was spent each week on fast food purchases. I started to bring my lunches more often to save more money for the week. It was a fun challenge to see how much I could save every week.Changing the way I spent money on fast food not only helped my budget, but watched my weight. Now I am more likely to bring my lunch than to buy it. I am not upset, but allowed to make positive choices to improve my life.1. What can we know about the author from Paragraph 1A. To make fast food spending under control.3. What can we infer from the last paragraphA. It is hard to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.B. It is unusual to make some changes.C. The envelope budget is good for health.D. The budget means the pressure from life.4. What is the passage mainly aboutA. Why the author became addicted to fast food.B. How fast food controlled the author's behavior.C. How the envelope budget changed the author's life.D. Why the author took the envelope budget seriously.BDear Mr. King,I'm Bob Watson, one of the customers of your grocery store. I'm writing to express my opinions about your goods.Your Supermart is super in many ways. First, I enjoy the selection of produce and fresh baked items. Second, your low prices and excellent customer service keep me coming back to your Supermart. I have found, however, that I must make a separate shopping trip to one of your competitors because there are many items your store does not carry. This becomes inconvenient for me, as my time is valuable, and I don't like to make two trips. I have been a long-time Supermart shopper and hope to continue for many years. If I could find all the satisfying items I need in one place, I would be a more satisfied customer.Specifically, I have never been able to get nacho cheese soup at your store. I can find other flavors of soup, but your store does not carry nacho cheese soup, a common ingredient(原料) in many of my recipes. In addition, I can only find large wonton wrappers, while many other stores carry both large and small and offer a more varied selection to their customers. Another example is Regent Brand Chili Seasoning. Though it is not a leading brand, it is still common on the shelves of other grocery stores in this area and is superior in flavor to its competitors.I sincerely hope to continue a relationship with your store, and I hope that you will consider the possibility of expanding your goods to be more competitive.Yours truly,Bob Watson1. What can we learn about the author from the letterA. He is a very picky reporter.B. He is a regular customer of the store.C. He is a responsible nutritionist.D. He is a competitor of the store.2.
