In Cecilia Lindqvist's book China, Empire of the Written Symbol, she introduces Chinese characters by _22— the distant past. She uses archeological examples to show _23—.Many examples are accompanied by _24—. Some of them show oracle bones that were once used to tell the future. Others show bronzes, pieces of pottery, and various artworks holding original versions of character. One character Lindqvist describes is that of a sheep (羊). —25— on a piece of pottery, the oldest Chinese picture of a sheep is nearly 6,000 years old. She shows that the character started as a —26— of a sheep's horns and eyes, and explains how it changed over time. Eventually, the eyes became a straight line, although today, the animal's horns remain.Another character that played a central role _27— Chinese history is _28— of the boat (舟). In parts of the Yangtze River Delta, traveling by boat was once as common as traveling on land. Scholars believe the character for boat _29— showed the wooden crossbars of the small trade boats unique to China.Lindqvist's explanations of the characters are _30— too difficult to understand. Because of this, her book can be enjoyed by linguists and laypeople alike.21.(A) interest (B) who interested (C) who is interesting (D) interested22.(A) reaching out (B) reaching into (C) reaching for (D) reaching at23.(A) how has characters developed (B) what developed characters(C) how did characters develop (D) how characters developed24.(A) occupation (B) illusion (C) illustration (D) promotion25.(A) Found (B) Founded (C) To be found (D) Being finding26.(A) bloom (B) drawing (C) cloning (D) capturing27.(A) of (B) on (C) in (D) with28.(A) any (B) which (C) other (D) that29.(A) originally (B) extraordinarily (C) especially (D) strangely30.(A) always (B) never (C) ever (D) oftenPart IV Reading comprehension: read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question. The sea being a rich source of food, it is only natural that some of the warm-blooded mammals that evolved on land would return to the ocean. One of these returnees is the whale, which in the suiprisingly short span of fifty million years has developed into the largest of all animal forms. These highly efficient and well-adapted mammals have, until the last few hundred years, enjoyed remarkable success in their sea habitat.Although various approaches have been tried, a workable method of measuring the intelligence of whales has not yet been found. Dolphins, which are actually a type of whale, have been the most carefully studied, and it has been found that they have a considerable capacity to learn. Dolphins are particularly social animals that show great attention to their young as well as concern for injured companions. They can talk with each other in high, piercing squeaks. These chirping sounds also serve as a form of natural sonar to help them find prey. Dolphins usually congregate in large herds, often numbering in the hundreds. These large schools feed on herring, sardines, and other fish. The larger whales also move in sociable groups, or "pods," and apparently have ways of using sound to communicate with each other as well as to find their way and detect food in the dark ocean depths. As intelligent as they may be, however, whales have not found a way to counter the attacks of their deadliest enemy: human beings. This is partly due to the fact that whales provide so many goods that people covet: meat, oil, whalebone, and ambergris. Another reason is that whales, like people, reproduce slowly. As a result, many species of whale have beendriven to near-extinction in the past two-and-a-half centuries of intensive whaling.31.Which of the following best describes the topic of the passage?(A) People's fight against the whale (B) Social habits of the whale(C)The rapid evolution of the whale (D) Strengths and weaknesses of the whale32.According to the passage, what is surprising about the adaptation of the whale to its ocean habitat?(A)It has evolved greatly in a relatively short time(B)The sea is an abundant source of food.(C)The whale is now in danger of extinction.(D)Whales have been successful in their sea habitat.33.Which word or phrase is closest in meaning to the word 'intelligence5 in the passage?(A) remarkable success (B) capacity to learn (C) intensive (D) highly efficient34.According to the passage, what is known about the intelligence of whales?(A)Dolphins are more intelligent than whales.(B)Whales are able to communicate with dolphins in high, piercing squeaks.(C)Some types of whales have a great ability to learn.(D)The intelligence of whales is too limited to be effectively measured.35.The word "congregate^ in the passage is closest in meaning to.(A) move (B) gather (C) communicate (D) hunt36.Which statement in paragraph 2 of the passage best illustrates the highly sensitive nature of thedolphin?,,(A)Dolphins are particularly social animals that show great attention to their young as well asconcern for injured companions.(B)They can talk with each other in high, piercing squeaks.(C)These chirping sounds also serve as a form of natural sonar to help them find prey.(D)Dolphins usually congregate in large herds, often numbering in the hundreds.37.According to the passage, both whales and dolphins.(A) travel in groups (B) eat sardines and herring(C) reproduce slowly (D) are intensely hunted for their meat and oil38.Which of the following is NOT discussed in the passage?(A) How dolphins communicate (B) How whales move about(C) How dolphins defend themselves (D) How dolphins find food39.According to the passage, which of the following is a factor in the disappearance of the whale?(A)Whales have only recently returned to the sea.(B)Whales are slow to reproduce.(C)Whales move in sociable groups.(D)Whales show great concern for their injured companions.40.In approximately the last two hundred and fifty years, several species of whales.(A) have experienced great success (B) have evolved into the largest of all mammals(C) have died out due to excessive whaling (D) have been virtually wiped out。

Reading comprehension: read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question. The sea being a rich source of food, it is only natural that some of the warm-blooded mammals that evolved on land would return to the ocean. One of these returnees is the whale, which in the surprisingly short span of fifty million years has developed into the largest of all animal forms. The larger whales also move in sociable groups, or “pods,” and apparently have ways of using sound to communicate with each other as well as to find their way and detect food in the dark ocean depths. As intelligent as they may be, however, whales have not found a way to counter the attacks of their deadliest enemy: human beings. This is partly due to the fact thatwhales provide so many goods that people covet: meat, oil, whalebone, and ambergris. Another reason is that whales, like people, reproduce slowly. As a result, many species of whale have been driven to near-extinction in the past two-and-a-half centuries of intensive whaling.31. Which of the following best describes the topic of the passage?(A) People‟s fight against the whale (B) Social habits of the whale(C)The rapid evolution of the whale (D) Strengths and weaknesses of the whale32. According to the passage, what is surprising about the adaptation of the whale to its oceanhabitat?(A) It has evolved greatly in a relatively short time(B) The sea is an abundant source of food.(C) The whale is now in danger of extinction.(D) Whales have been successful in their sea habitat.33. Which word or phrase is closest in meaning to the word …intelligence‟ in the passage?(A) remarkable success (B) capacity to learn (C) intensive (D) highly efficient34. According to the passage, what is known about the intelligence of whales?(A) Dolphins are more intelligent than whales.(B) Whales are able to communicate with dolphins in high, piercing squeaks.(C) Some types of whales have a great ability to learn.(D) The intelligence of whales is too limited to be effectively measured.35. The word …congregate‟ in the passage is closest in meaning to _____.(A) move (B) gather (C) communicate (D) hunt36. Which statement in paragraph 2 of the passage best illustrates the highly sensitive nature of thedolphin?”(A) Dolphins are particularly social animals that show great attention to their young as well asconcern for injured companions.(B) They can talk with each other in high, piercing squeaks.(C) These chirping sounds also serve as a form of natural sonar to help them find prey.(D) Dolphins usually congregate in large herds, often numbering in the hundreds.37. According to the passage, both whales and dolphins _____.(A) travel in groups (B) eat sardines and herring(C) reproduce slowly (D) are intensely hunted for their meat and oil38. Which of the following is NOT discussed in the passage?(A) How dolphins communicate (B) How whales move about(C) How dolphins defend themselves (D) How dolphins find food39. According to the passage, which of the following is a factor in the disappearance of the whale?(A) Whales have only recently returned to the sea.(B) Whales are slow to reproduce.(C)Whales move in sociable groups.(D) Whales show great concern for their injured companions.40. In approximately the last two hundred and fifty years, several species of whales _____.(A) have experienced great success (B) have evolved into the largest of all mammals(C) have died out due to excessive whaling (D) have been virtually wiped out。
