This morning, when I first caught sight of the unfamiliar whitened world, I could not help wishing that we had snow oftener, that English winters were more wintry.
How delightful it would be, I thought, to have months of clean snow and a landscape sparkling with frost instead of innumerable grey featureless days of rain and raw winds.我想,如果我们这里经常是个冰雪积月、霜华璀璨的景象,而不是像现在这种苦雨凄风永无尽期的阴沉而乏特色的日子,那该多么令人喜悦啊!I began to envy my friends in such places as the Eastern States of America and Canada, who can count upon a solid winter every year and know that the snow will arrive by a certain date and will remain, without degenerating into black slush, until Spring is close at hand. T o have snow and frost and yet a clear sunny sky and air as crisp as a biscuit - this seemed to me happiness indeed.

And I have some very happy memories of Crosslands. It was, it seemed so huge to me as a child. And it had a lovely living room with a piano in it and a lovely sort of hall with lots of carpets and chests and antiques and so on. And there was a mysterious room, it was the drawing room, and we only used it on Sundays, or when the vicar came for tea, or Christmas Day or Easter Day, and I was - used to be amazed about this room because it had the best furniture in it but it was covered up with sheets - it was as if all the furniture was wearing clothes - and it seemed to me ridiculous that we couldn’t en- joy this beautiful furniture all the week through really. And probably my favorite room was the kitchen. It had a lovely red flagstone floor, which was always highly polished, and an Aga, you know one of those big cookers that heats the whole room so it was always warm there, and there was a kind of clothes-horse above it that we used to hang all our clothes on, and it was just - it was lovely. It was a very warm room with baked bread and - my grandmother used to make ice cream and we’d eat it in there and there was a vegetable garden leading fromthere so I spent a lot of time in the vegetable garden picking peas and eating them - my grandmother used to get really cross with me because I used to pick all the vegetables and the fruit for our meals and then I’d eat half of them, b ecause they tasted so delicious coming fresh from the garden. Now, I went back to it a few years ago and it was a big mistake. They’ve modernized it inside, they’ve got rid of those lovely old fire- places have just gone. And they’ve knocked a wall down so the drawing room and the living room have become one big modern plastic kind of room. But I think what upset me most about it was the feeling that the house had shrunk, it had become smaller and that my memory of this lovely large warm comfortable house had turned into an old house with modernized rooms inside it. And it taught me a lesson really, that you can’t go back on the past and recapture it. But there’s a beautiful memory there.

1Though there is much to be concerned about, there is far,far more for which to be thankful.Though life's goodness can at times be overshadowed,it is never outweighed. For every single act that is senselessly destructive, there are thousands more small, quiet acts of love, kindness and compassion. For every person who seeks to hurt, there are many, many more who devote their lives to helping and to healing. There is goodness to life that cannot be denied. In the most magnificent vistas and in the smallest details, look closely, for that goodness always comes shining through. There si no limit to the goodness of life.It grows more abundant with each new encounter. The more you experience and appreciate the goodness of life, the more there is to be lived.Even when the cold winds blow and the world seems to be cov ered in foggy shadows, the goodness of life lives on.Open your eyes, open your heart, and you will see that goodness is everywhere.Though the goodness of life seems at times to suffer setbacks,it always endures. For in the darkest moment it becomes vividly clear that life is a priceless treasure. And so the goodness of life is made even stronger by thevery things that would oppose it.Time and time again when you feared it was gone forever you found that the goodness of life was really only a moment away.Around the next corner, inside every moment, the goodness of life is there to surprise and delight you.Take a moment to let the goodness of life touch your spirit and calm your thoughts. Then, share your good fortune with another. For the goodness of life grows more and more magnificent each time it is given away.Though the problems constantly scream for attention and the conflicts appear to rage ever stronger, the goodness of life grows stronger still, quietly, peacefully, with more purpose and meaning than ever before. 2We are not born with courage, but neither are we born with fear.Maybe some of our fears are brought on by your own experiences,by what someone has told you,by what you've read in the papers. Some fears are valid, like walking alone in a bad part of town at two o'clock in the morning. But once you learn to avoid that situation, you won't need to live in fear of it.Fears, even the most basic ones, can totally destroy our ambitions.Fear can destroy fortunes.Fear can destroy relationships.Fear,if left unchecked, can destroy our lives.Fear is one of the many enemies lurking inside us.Let me tell you about five of the other enemies we face from within. The first enemy that you've got to destroy before it destroys you is indifference. What a tragic disease this is! “Ho-hum,let it slide.I'll just drift along.” Here's one problem with drifting: you can't drift your way to the to of the mountain. The second enemy we face is indecision.Indecision is the thief of opportunity and enterprise. It will steal your chances for a better future.Take a sword to this enemy. The third enemy inside is doubt.Sure, there's room for healthy skepticism. You can't believe everything. But you also can't let doubt take over. Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities nad doubt the opportunities.Worse of all, they doubt themselves.I'm telling you, doubt will destroy your life and your chances of success. It will empty both your bank account and your heart.Doubt is an enemy.Go after it.Get rid of it.The fourth enemy within is worry. We've all got to worry some.Just don't let conquer you.Instead, let it alarm you.Worry can be useful. If you step off the curb in New York City and a taxi is coming, you've got to worry. But you can't let worry loose like a mad dog that drives you into a small corner. Here's what you've got to do with your worries: drive them into a small corner.Whatever is out to get you, you've got to get it.Whatever is pushing on you, you've got to push back. The fifth interior enemy is overcaution. It is the timid approach to life.Timidity is not a virtue;it's an illness. If you let it go,it'll conquer you.Timid people don't get promoted. They don't advance and grow and become powerful in the marketplace. You've got to avoid overcaution.Do battle with the enemy.Do battle with your fears.Build your courage to fight what's holding ou back, what's keeping you from your goals and dreams.Be courageous in your life and in your pursuit of the things you want and the person you want to become. 3Abundance is a life style,a way of living your life.It isn't something you buy now and then or pull down from the cupboard, dust off and use once or twice, and then return to the cupboard.Abundance is a philosophy;it appears in your physiology, your value system, and carries its own set of beliefs. You walk with it,sleep with it,bath with it,feel with it,and need to maintain and take care of it as well.Abundance doesn't always require money. Many people live with all that money can buy yet live empty inside.Abundance begins inside with some main self-ingredients,like love, care, kindness and gentleness, thoughtfulness and compassion.Abundance is a state of being. It radiates outward. It shines like the sun among the many moons in the world.Being from the brightness of abundance doesn't allow the darkness to appear or be in the path unless a choice to allow it to.The true state of abundance doesn't have room for lies or games normally played. The space is too full of abundance. This may be a challenge because we still need to shine for other to see.Abundance is seeing people for their gifts and not what they lack or could be.Seeing all things for their gifts and not what they lack.Start by knowing what your abundances are, fill that space with you,and be fully present from that state of being.Your profession of choice is telling you of knowing and possibilities. That is their gift.Consultants and customer service professionals have the ministrative assistants and virtual assistants have an abundance of coordination and time management.Abundance is all around you,and all within.See what it is;love yourself for what it is,not what you're missing,or what that can be better, but for what it is at this present moment.Be in a state of abundance of what you already have.I guarantee they are there;it always is buried but there.Breathe them in as if they are the air you breathe because they are yours.Let go of anything that isn't abundant for the time being.Name the shoe boxes in your closet with your gifts of abundance;pull from them every morning if needed.Know they are there.Learning to trust in your own abundance is required. When you begin to be within your own space of abundance, whatever you need will appear whenever you need it.That's just the way the higher powers set this universe up to work.Trust the universal energy. The knowing of it all will humble you to its power yet let the brightness of you shine everywhere it needs to.Just by being from a state of abundance,it is being you. 4Happiness is universal. It can be found in you,in me,in the simple good fortune of survival.Happiness is a strength that comes from within, the appreciation for the world around us and the love we have for ourselves.Happiness can be found wherever you are.It lies in your bed and sits on your favorite chair.Happiness can be found in life's most simple pleasures like combing your hair or drawing a breath of fresh air.Happiness says she accompanied you to all the placesyou have been and in the future, happiness will pave a splendid path for your journey through life.Happiness is found in all that you have read. All you have learned will emanate from the bottom of your heart.Happiness is an image of this world reflected in your eyes. Its vividness lies not only in the vibrant colors and air but also in the exuberance of your dreams and smiles.Happiness can be found in the love and concern from your parents;happiness can be found in the innocence of your child's eyes.Happiness is the spring swallow's song carried to your ears by a gentle warm breeze.Happiness is a warm smile from a stranger as he passes by.Happiness is the feeling derived from challenges faced and overcome.Happiness is not found in one's destination, but rather on the road to that destination. We are all travelers in life's journey. Our happiness lies not in the future, but in every moment of each day.Happiness is a garden granted by God to every one.You can maintain the garden's beauty as intended by keeping that beauty within your heart.Happiness is derived from our attitude;it is not something that is bought or sold.Happiness is found when we resist temptation, when we maintain our lofty ideals even in the face of adversity.Happiness is a belief in yourself.Happiness is a key with which we open doors to opportunity. It is a code by which we live. You need only reach out to find happiness. With happiness both your heart and soul will be invigorated to achieve more than you ever dreamed and more than you ever thought possible. With happiness in your heart, love blossoms for every one in our life, and the world becomes your home. 5Accustomed to the warm weather in the winter,I always love a sunny day to the sun.Because when there is sunshine,I always feel very good, and I don't know why I'm in a good mood, just see everything in the sunlight,it is so beautiful and glorious.Perhaps this is why the sky and sunshine asperse warm! Through the glass thin, looked at the sky,I saw the colorful color,is really very beautiful. That feeling is very beautiful,as if you can dream to the colorful world, where there is everything, everything is the most essence.I am in the winter sunshine particularly worship, especially after After rain the sky looks blue. When my mood is to click into place by yin. After lunch, the sun shines into the room,a plume of sunlight cast a light spot in the room is oval.At that time,I always love on the spot, the purpose is to block the spot not to let it shine. However,I do not know the spot has been shining on my body, but also formed an oval light spot. His smirk behind,is the mother of the slight chuckle. This is not for anything else, just see my mother was really very silly.Perhaps this is the innocence of a child touched mother or mother smile. In the house a bit stuffy,I took the chair into the yard, where the sun is very large.Although the scenery is not what the yard, but off the leaves of the tree trunks and branches are bare. And in the middle there is a big tree there are many small broken branches broken grass build magpie nest.I love sitting in a chair looking up at the tree on the magpie nest. How do you think of magpie nest? What's on the tree when there's a magpie? So imperceptibly, the body was cold temperature rise.It feels so warm! So,I just take off clothes, look up the book in the best of spirits. At that time the feeling is very comfortable, very beautiful.Think about the fire in the cold stamping way, think in the cold breath warm hands, the winter sunis really more precious than what.I appreciate the sun in the winter, although the continuous rain let the sun for a long time can not spread, but the sun is still by virtue of their patience and perseverance until the time of the end of the rainy. That is the sun to show their time.He was trying to make up for the warmth that people had not enjoyed before,a real green product from nature. This is the charm and value of winter sunshine. It drives people out of an idle at home,to bring people warm feeling.Let the world from the dead to the state full of vigour. The winter sun love I feel, the winter sun there is a barometer of my mood.I am depressed from in an unbroken line wet,it let me do what no patience,I feel very upset. It feels like the world is grey,it's nothing to live with, maybe it's my prejudice, but this is something I've been born with, and I have no way to change it.But when the sun dispelled the sunny rain down is my mood click into place. The habits that friends have been used, they gave me a title of "sunflower".I love to follow the winter sun.I don't mind, because I love the winter sunshine. The winter sunshine gives me warmth, gives me energy, gives me the mood, and I am its "vane",and it is my "God"".优美英文散文文章篇6What is the significance of life? Is there any gauge to measure it? It would be very difficult,of course, trying to advance an absolute standard. However, the significance of one's existence can more or less be rated by examining his attitude toward life and work.Since ancient times all people of accomplishment are very serious about their lives. While they are alive, even if there is only one day left to live, they try to work as hard as they can and learnas much as possible, never letting a single day slip by without any gain. This is true of the working people as well as of the great statesmen and great thinkers in our history. In the chapter “Foods and Goods" of The C hronicles of the Han Dynasty, the great historian Ban Gu states:"In winter people stay indoors.Women get together to spin hemp threads at night. They manage to work forty-five days in a month."”It sounds strange. How come there are forty-five days in a month? Let us look at its annotations given by Yanshigu:"They gain half a day 's time every night and, they have forty-five days in a month."Now it's clear. Our ancestors had, earlier than the westerners, learned how to calculate workdays accurately and reasonably. They had also learned how calculate day shift and night shift as well.It is common knowledge that there are only thirty days in a month.Counting the time of one night for half a day,our forefathers managed to expend the month by fifteen days.In this sense the night time gained amounts to one third of our lives, doesn't it?This one third of life is not only treasured by the working people but also by the great statesmen in our history. In the chapter "Criminal Law" of The Chronicles of the Han Dynasty,Ban Gu also states:"The First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty set a good example in being industrious, disposing of lawsuits during the day and reading at night ,"This is about how he tried to find time to read at night. To some people the The First Emperor of the Qin isn't a pleasant name to recall but there is no denying that he was agreat figure in the history of China.Even BanGu has an impartial opinion of him.Liu Xiang, the great scholar of the Han Dynasty ,cites in his historical Anecdotes many princes of the Spring and Autumn period and Warring States period who paid great attention to learning. Why did the people in the set such great store by the night time? I think this is positive proof of their attitude toward the one third of their lives. This is exactly what we should learn from them.My intention of writing this little essay tonight is to call the readers' attention to the one third of his lifetime so that ,after working for a whole day,he can sit relaxed at home, browsing through and appreciating the useful knowledge of the past and of the present. 7Fame is very much like an animal chasing its own tail who, when he captures it,does not know what else to do but to continue chasing it.Fame and the delighting popularity that accompanies it,force the famous person to participate in his or her own destruction. Those who gain fame most often gain it as a result of possessing a single talent or skill: singing, dancing, painting,or writing, etc. The successful performer develops a style that is marketed aggressively and gains some popularity. And it is this popularity that usually convinces the performer to continue performing in the same style, since that is what the public seems to want and to enjoy. But in time, the performer becomes bored singing the same songs in the same way year after year,or the painter becomes bored painting similar scenes or portraits,or the actor is tired of playing the same characterrepeatedly. The demand of the public holds the artist hostage to his or her own success, fame. If the artist attempts to change his or her style of writing or dancing or singing, etc.the audience may turn away and look to confer changeable fame which is passing quickly on another.I believe that fame and celebrity, influence and power, success and failure, reality and illusion are all somehow neatly woven into a seamless fabric we laughingly call reality.I say to those who desperately seek fame and fortune, celebrity: good luck. But what will you do when you have caught your tail, your success, and your fame? Keep chasing it? If you do catch it,hang on for dear life because falling is not as painful as landing.See you soon famous and almost famous. 8I grew up in a small town where the elementary school wasa ten-minute walk from my house and in an age,not so long ago ,when children could go home for lunch and find their mothers waiting. At the time,I did not consider this a luxury, although today it certainly would be.I took it for granted that mothers were the sandwich-makers,the finger-painting appreciators and the homework monitors.I never questioned that this ambitious, intelligent woman, who had had a career before I was born and would eventually return to a career, would spend almost every lunch hour throughout my elementary school years just with me.I only knew that when the noon bell rang,I would race breathlessly home.My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me with a look that suggested I wasthe only important thing she had on her mind. For this,I am forever grateful. Some sounds bring it all back: the high-pitched squeal of my mother's teakettle, the rumble of the washing machine in the basement and the jangle of my dog's license tags as she bounded down the stairs to greet me.Our time together seemed devoid of the gerrymandered schedules that now pervade my life. One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always.I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had painstakingly rehearsed my lines with me.But no matter how easily I delivered them at home,as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally,my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator's part to the play, and asked me to switch roles. Her word, kindly delivered, still stung, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.I didn't tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day.But she sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine on the trellis was turning green.Under the huge elm trees,we could see yellow dandelions popping through the grass in bunches,as if a painter had touched our landscape with dabs of gold .I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the clumps."I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds,"she said, yanking a blossom up by its roots."From now on,we'll have only roses in this garden.""But I like dandelions,"I protested."All flowers are beautiful-even dandelions."My mother looked at me seriously."Yes,everyflower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn't it?" She asked thoughtfully.I nodded, pleased that I had won her over."And that is true of people too,"she added." Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that."Relieved that she had guessed my pain,I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly."But you will be a beautiful narrator," she said ,reminding me of how much I loved to read stories aloud to her ."The narrator's part is every bit as important as the part of a princess.。

The mourners dispersed from the graveside in groups of twos and threes. They paused to pay their condolences to the family, some haking hands and others kissing and hugging. I couldn’t heartheir words of comfort but imagined that they included such phrases as sadly missed and will be remembered and had a good, long life; all of which were perfectly true. I watched the family maketheir way along the path and I hoped that there would be no regrets for deeds done or not done, just good memories to reflect upon and their lives to live.It was time for me to leave too, I supposed. I wasn’t prepared for this at all. How could I be? Maybe I should be making my way to the Pearly Gates, but I had no sense of direction when I wasalive so I had no chance of finding my way now as a spirit, if indeed that is what I am. Is it correct to say “I am” if I am no longer, if Idon’t actually exist? I tried to take stock of how Iwas feeling and realised it was just that what was missing. Feeling. Without my old body there were no aches and pains, nor was I experiencing any anxiety. I didn’t feel hungry, thirsty ortired. Time was irrelevant. Perhaps my spirit would just drift along in this way for eternity.I had never believed in the concept of heaven or hell. Nor had I had subscribed to that school of thought that your spirit would enter another form of life, but it gave me something to ponderwhile I still could. I w ouldn’t wish to be reincarnated as a human and go through all those stages before you felt comfortable in your own skin; falling in and out of love, swotting for examsand dealing with teenage children. Neither did I fancy coming back as any form of animal. I just wanted to continue floating aimlessly towards the glow of light up ahead.“I think she’s back with us” said a voice I didn’t recognise.I wanted to ask where I was and with whom but no words escaped me.“You’ve been in an accident and you’re in hospital. Can you tell me how you’re feeling?”Actually, I couldn’t. I’d been given a taste of freedom and now it would seem I was back to dealing with the struggles of everyday life. Would that seem ungrateful to the hospital staff?

It is well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the most subordinate positions. Many of the leading businessmen of Pittsburgh had a serious responsibility thrust upon them at the very threshold of their career. They were introduced to the broom, and spent the first hours of their business lives sweeping out the office. I notice we have janitors and janitresses now in offices, and our young men unfortunately miss that salutary branch of business education. But if by the chance the professional sweeper is absent any morning, the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of those sweepers myself.Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly started, my advice to you is “aim high”. I would not give a fig for the young man who does not already see himself the partner or the head of an important firm. Do not rest content for a moment in your thoughts as head clerk, or foreman, or general manager in any concern, no matter how extensive. Say to yourself, “My place is at the top.” Be king in your dreams. And here is the prime condition of success, the great secret: concentrate your energy, thought, and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged. Having begun in one line, resolve to fight it out on that line, to lead in it, adopt every improvement, have the best machinery, and know the most about it.The concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital, which means that they have scattered their brains also. They have investments in this, or that, or the other, here there, and everywhere. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” is all wrong. I tell you to “put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.” Look round you and take notice, men who do that not often fail. It is easy to watch and carry the one basket. It is trying to carry too many baskets that breaks most eggs in this country. He who carries three baskets must put one on his head, which is apt to tumble and trip him up. One fault of the American businessman is lack of concentration. To summarize what I have said: aim for the highest; never enter a bar room; do not touch liquor, or if at all only at meals; never speculate; never indorse beyond your surplus cash fund; make the firm’s interest yours; break orders always to save owners; concentrate; put all your eggs in one basket, and watch that basket; expenditure always within revenue; lastly, be not impatient, for as Emerson says, “no one can cheat you out of ultimate success but yourselves.” When love beckons to you, follow him, though his ways are hard and steep. And when his wings enfold you, yield to him, though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you. And when he speaks to you, believe in him, though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden. For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning. Even as he ascends to your heightand caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun, so shall he descend to our roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth. But if, in your fear, you would seek only love’s peace and love’s pleasure, then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love’s threshing-floor, into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears. Love gives naught but it self and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not, nor would it be possessed, for love is sufficient unto love.Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. But if you love and must have desires, let these be your desires:To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night. To know the pain of too much tenderness. To be wounded by your own understanding of love; And to bleed willingly and joyfully. To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving. To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy. To return home at eventide with gratitude. And then to sleep with a payer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips. I have always wondered at the passion many people have to meet the celebrated. The prestige you acquire by being able to tell your friends that you know famous men proves only that you are yourself of small account. The celebrated develop a technique to deal with the persons they come across. They show the world a mask, often an impressive on, but take care to conceal their real selves. They play the part that is expected from them, and with practice learn to play it very well, but you are stupid if you think that this public performance of theirs corresponds with the man within.I have been attached, deeply attached, to a few people; but I have been interested in men in general not for their own sakes, but for the sake of my work. I have not, as Kant enjoined, regarded each man as an end in himself, but as material that might be useful to me as a writer.I have been more concerned with the obscure than with the famous. They are more often themselves. They have had no need to create a figure to protect themselves from the world or to impress it. Their idiosyncrasies have had more chance to develop in the limited circle of their activity, and since they have never been in the public eye it has never occurred to them that they have anything to conceal. They display their oddities because it has never struck them that they are odd. And after all it is with the common run of men that we writers have to deal; kings, dictators, commercial magnates are from our point of view very unsatisfactory. To write about them is a venture that has often tempted writers, but the failure that has attended their efforts shows that such beings are too exceptional to form a proper ground for a work of art. They cannot be made real. The ordinary is the writer’s richer field. Its unexpectedness, its singularity, its infinite varietyafford unending material. The great man is too often all of a piece; it is the little man that is a bundle of contradictory elements. He is inexhaustible. You never come to the end of the surprises he has in store for you. For my part I would much sooner spend a month on a desert island with a veterinary surgeon than with a prime minister.。

An ancient Hebraic text says: love is as strong as death. It seems that not everyone experiences this kind of strong love. The increasing probably, crime and war tells us that the world is in indispensable need of true love. But what is true love?Love is something we all need. But how do we know when we experience it?True love is best seen as the promotion and action, not an emotion. Love is not exclusively based how we feel.Certainly our emotions are involved. But they cannot be our only criteria for love.True love is when you care enough about another person that you will lay down your life for them. When this happens, then love truly is as strong as death. How many of you have a mother, or father, husband or wife, son or daughter or friend who would sacrifice his or her own life on yours? Those of you who truly love your spells but unchildren, would unselfishly lay your life on the line to save them from death? Many people in an emergency room with their loved ones and prayedplease, God,take me instead of them.Find true love and be a true lover as well.May you find a love which is not only strong as death, but to leave to a truly for feeling life.

This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing appetite for what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long as you are young. When your aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you’ve grown old, even at 20; but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there’s hope you may die young at 80.
Three Days to SeeAll of us have read thrilling stories in which the hero had only a limited and specified time to live. Sometimes it was as long as a year, sometimes as short as 24 hours. But always we were interested in discovering just how the doomed hero chose to spend his last days or his last hours. I speak, of course, of free men who have a choice, not condemned criminals whose sphere of activities is strictly delimited.Such stories set us thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstances. What events, what experiences, what associations should we crowd into those last hours as mortal beings, what regrets?Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow. Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life. We should live each day with gentleness, vigor and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretches before us in the constant panorama of more days and months and years to come. Thereare those, of course, who would adopt the Epicurean motto of “Eat, drink, and be merry”. But most people would be chastened by the certainty of impending death. In stories the doomed hero is usually saved at the last minute by some stroke of fortune, but almost always his sense of values is changed. He becomes more appreciative of the meaning of life and its permanent spiritual values. It has often been noted that those who live, or have lived, in the shadow of death bring a mellow sweetness to everything they do.Most of us, however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life. The same lethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of all our faculties and senses. Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearing in adult life. But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties. Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily, without concentration and with little appreciation. It is the same old story of not being grateful for what we have until we lose it, of not being conscious of health until we are ill.I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound.
