Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap(间隙)with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessaryfor understanding a person's needs. Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do.Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what maybe implied(暗示) is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily.A nurse who understands the healing(治愈) value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.32 What does the author say about silence in conversations?A.It implies anger.B. So it’s no surprise that cultures around the world celebrate spring by honoring the egg. Some traditions are simple, like the red eggs that get baked into Greek Easter breads. Others upgrade the egg into a fancy art, like the heavily jewel-covered “eggs” that were favored by the Russians starting in the 19th century. One ancient form of egg art is egg painting, which comes to us from Ukraine. For centuries, Ukrainians have been drawing complicated patterns on eggs. Contemporary artists have followed this tradition and adapted the traditional methods to create eggs that speak to the anxieties of our age: Life is precious, and delicate. Eggs are, too.“There’s something about their delicate nature that crazily appeals to me,” says New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast. Several years ago, she became interested in egg painting and learned the traditional Ukrainian technique to draw her very modern characters. “I’ve broken eggs atevery stage of the process — from the very beginning to the very, very end.”But there’s an appeal in that vulnerability. “There’s part of this sickening horror that I kind of like, the horror of knowing you’re walking on the edge with this, knowing that it could all fall apart at any second.” Chast’s designs, such as a worried man alone in a tiny boat, reflect that delicateness.Traditional Ukrainian decorated eggs also spoke to those fears. The complex and detailed patterns were believed to offer protection against evil.Egg painting art, dating back to 300 B.C., was later absorbed into the Christian church. The old symbols, however, still survive. A decorated egg with a bird on it, given to a young married couple, is a wish for children.A decorated egg thrown into the field would be a wish for a good harvest.28. What do we learn about the decorated “eggs” in RussiaA. They are shaped like jewel cases.B. They are heavily painted in red.C. They are favored as a form of art.D. They are valued by the rich.29. Why have contemporary artists continued the tradition of egg paintingA. Because eggs serve as a symbol of the coming of spring.B. Because eggs provide a source of protein in winter’s end.C. Under a voice-activated command, you say an address. “The fastest route will take us 15.3 minutes. Should I take it ” You say “yes” and you are on your way. The car responds and starts moving all by itself. All you have to do is to sit back and relax. How strange would it be if, one day in the future, everyone had such a car No crazy driving, no quarrels, no cutting in; traffic laws would be respected and driving much safer. On the other hand, imagine the cost savings for local police enforcement (强制执行) and town budgets without all those speeding and parking tickets.A new technology has the potential to change modern society thoroughly. There’s no question that self-driving vehicles could be anenormous benefit. The potential for safer cars means accident statistics would drop: some 94% of road accidents in the U.S. involve human error. Older drivers and visually-or physically-disabled people would gain a new level of freedom. Maintaining safe speeds and being electric, self-driving cars would sharply reduce pollution levels and dependency on non-renewable fuels. Roads would be quieter, people safer. But we must also consider the impact of the new technology on those who now depend on driving for their living. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, in May 2015 there were 505,560 registered school bus drivers. The American Trucking Association lists approximately 3.5 million professional truck drivers in the U.S. The companies developing self-driving vehicles should be partnering with state and federal authorities to offer retraining for this massive workforce, many of whom will be displaced by the new technology.New technologies will, and should, be developed. This is how society moves forward. However, progress can’t be one-sided. It is necessary for the companies and state agencies involved to consider the moral consequences of these potential changes to build a better future for all.32. What would be the effect of the wide use of driverless carsA. More policemen would inspect the streets.B. People would never feel angry about the traffic.C. It would save local governments a lot of money.D. Traffic regulations would be a thing of the past.33. How would the elderly and the disabled benefit from driverless carsA. They would get rid of air pollution.B. They could enjoy greater mobility.C. They would suffer no road accidents.D. They could go anywhere they want.34. What would be the negative effect of driverless carsA. The conflict between labor and management would sharpen.B. Many drivers would have to find new ways of earning a living.C. Drivers would have a hard time adapting to new road conditions.D. The gap between various departments of society would be widened.35. What does the author suggest businesses and the government doA. Enable everyone to benefit from new technologies.B. Keep pace with technological developments.C. Make new technologies affordable to everyone.D. Popularize the use of new technologies and devices.

AWhile small may be beautiful, tall is just plain uncomfortable it seems, particularly when it comes to staying in hotels and eating in restaurants. The Tall Persons Club Great Britain(TPCGB), which was formed six months ago to campaign for the needs of the tall, has turned its attention to hotels and restaurants. Beds that are too small, shower heads that are too low, and restaurant tables with hardly any leg-room ,all make life difficult for those of above average height , it says. But it is not just the extra-tall whose needs are not being met. The average height of the population has been increasing yet the standard size of beds, doorways, and chairs has remained unchanged.“The bedding industry says a bed should be six inches larger than the person using it , so even a king-size bed at 6'6"(6feet and 6 inches) is falling short for 25%of men, while the standard 6'3" bed caters for less than half of the male population, "said TPCGB president Phil Heinricy ,"Seven-foot beds would work fine."Similarly , restaurant tables can cause no end of problems . Small tables, which mean the long-legged have to sit a foot or so away from them, are enough to make tall customers go elsewhere. Some have already taken note, however, At Queens Moat Houses’Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh.6'6" beds are now put in as standard after requests for longer beds from taller visitors, particularly Americans.21 . What is the purpose of the TPCGB campaign?A To provide better servicesB To rebuild hotels and restaurantsC To draw public attention to the needs of the tallD To attract more people to become its members22 . Which of the following might be a bed of proper length according to Phil Heirtricy?A .7'2'' B. 7' C. 6'6'' D .6'3''23.What may happen to restaurants with small tables?A .They may lose some customersB. They may start businesses elsewhereC .They have to find easy chairs to match the tablesD .They have to provide enough space for the long—legged24. What change has already been made in a hotel in Edinburgh?A .Tall people pay more for larger bedsB. 6'6''beds have taken the place of 6'3''bedsC. Special rooms are kept for AmericansD. Guest rooms are standardizedBGrown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears. One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials increase the length of time we will Remember it. In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn. The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood. The law of overleatning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one's future development.25.What is the main idea of Paragraph 1A. People remember well what they learned in childhood.B. Children have a better memory than grown-ups.C. Poem reading is a good way to learn words.D. Stories for children are easy to remember.26. The author explains the law of overlearning byA. presenting research findingsB. setting down general rulesC. making a comparisonD. using examples27. According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables isA. a result of overlearningB. a special case of crammingC. a skill to deal with math problemsD. a basic step towards advanced studies28.What is the author's opinion on cramming?A. It leads to failure in college exams.B. It's helpful only in a limited way.C. It's possible to result in poor memory. D.It increases students' learning interest.CGiven that many people's moods are regulated by the chemical action of chocolate, it was probably only a matter of time before somebody made the chocolate shop similar to a drugstore of Chinese medicine. Looking like a setting from the film Charlie&the Chocolate Factory,Singapore's Chocolate Research Facility (CRF) has over 100 varieties of chocolates. its founder is Chris Lee who grew up at his parents' comer store with one hand almost always in the jar of sweets. If the CRF seems to be a smart idea, that's because Lee is not merely a seasoned salesperson but also head of a marketing department that has business relations with big names such as Levi's and Sony. That idea surely results in the imagination at work when it comes to making different flavored(味道)chocolates. The CRF's produce is "green" made within the country and divided into 10 lines, with the Alcohol Series being the most popular. The Exotic Series一with Sichuan pepper, red bean (豆). Cheese and other flavors一also does well and is fun to taste. And for chocolate snobs, who think that they have a better knowledge of chocolate than others, the Connoisseur Series uses cocoa beans from Togo, Cuba, Venezuela , and Ghana, among others.29. Why is Chris Lee able to develop his idea of the CRF?A. He knows the importance of research.B. He learns form shops of similar types.C. He has the support of many big namesD. He has a lot of marketing experience.30. Which line of the CRF produce sells best?A. The Connoisseur Series.B. The Exotic Series.C. The Alcohol Series.D. The Sichuan Series.31. The words "chocolate snobs" in Paragraph 3 probably refer to people whoA. are particular about chocolateB. know little about cocoa beansC. look down upon othersD. like to try new flavorsDWhy should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.Exploration also allows minerals and other potential resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spin-offs including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems. Even non-stick pans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products(副产品) of technological developments in the space industry! While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human beings to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist. While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.32. Why does the author mention the questions?A. To express his doubts.B. To compare different ideas.C. To introduce points for discussion.D. To describe the conditions on Earth.33. What is the reason for exploring space based on?A. Humans are nature-born to do so.B. Humans have the tendency to fight.C. Humans may find new sources of food.D. Humans don't like to stay in the same place.34. The underlined word “spinoffs” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to ________.A. survival chancesB. potential resourcesC. unexpected benefitsD. physical possessions35. Which of the statements can best sum up the passage?A. Space exploration has created many wonders.B. Space exploration provides the best value for money.C. Space exploration can benefit science and technology.D. Space exploration may help us avoid potential problems on Earth.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Someone sent me an email urging me to acquire a lot more resources,
suggesting that I could do so much more good if I had an 8 or 9 figure net
income instead of 6 like I’ve been doing for years. He claimed to have
acquired a great deal of wealth himself and found it highly beneficial to
fueling his path with a heart.
As I consider his suggestion, I find myself not having much clarity (清
晰的思维) as to what I’d do with 1 million or 10 million more money flowing
through my life. I put so much attention on creativity, fulfillment(履
行), exploration, relationships, etc. that I find it difficult to
intelligently imagine how more financial resources could provide extra fuel
for that, except in small ways or in ways that aren’t particularly
meaningful to me.
Lately I’ve been considering what it would be like to deliberately
reduce my income for a while and see if I could live on much less, just
for the experience. What if I capped my net personal income at $10,000 per
year, for instance? That isn’t such a big deal to me, though, since I
already went through a period of low income like that during the 1990s,
