Today, I would like to discuss something that is very familiar to me but may not
be familiar to you. Its name is Chinese wolfberry, and we usually call it “Gou Qi”.
Why I said I know it well, because in my hometown, we plant it and we take it for a
living. Maybe thanks to it, my parents could afford my tuition and send me to the
college. Now, please allow me to introduce something about Chinese Wolfberry.
Chinese Wolfberry is a famous plant fruit which has three
medicinal, edible andhealthy values.And, I am glad to be here to show its edible value,
as a food, drink and dish.
First, as a food, dried Chinese Wolfberry are traditionally cooked before
consumption. Dried Chinese Wolfberry are often added to porridge and almond jelly,
as well as used in Chinese soups, in combination with chicken or mutton, vegetables,
and other herbs. Second, as a drink, the berries are boiled as an herbal tea, often with
some kinds of flowers and red jujubes. In addition, various wines containing Chinese
Wolfberry (called gǒuqíjiǔ) are also produced, including some that are a blend of
grape wine and Chinese Wolfberry wine. For example, Ningxia Hong is becoming
one of well-known brands of china. Third, as a dish, young wolfberry shoots and
leaves arebecame more and more popular as a leaf vegetable, because it is delicious
and rich in nutrients.
