“The Victoria n Age” in my eyes

When it comes to Queen Victoria, I knew her before I learnt the English history. Not only because it’s during her reign that the First Opium War happened, which opened the gate for the imperialist invasion of China, but also because it’s a lso during her reign that the United Kingdom's power was at its zenith. How can a woman do such a marvelous thing, which intrigued me to know more about her and her era.

Alexandrina Victoria ruled over the British Empire for over 60 years, which was the longest one in the English history. In this period, the economy and culture had an unprecedented prosperity, moreover, the constitutional monarchy also obtained a full development, which makes Queen Victoria became the symbol of peace and prosperity in Britain. Some says that all these achievements should be attributed to her husband, Prince Albert. But no matter what to say, she is the queen, it’s during her period.

The queen wrote in her dairy before she ascended the throne, “Since god put me on the country's throne, I would try my best to fulfill my obligation. Although I am still young, and may be lack of experience in many respects, but I'm sure, almost no one has such a strong will and truly hope to serve our nation and people in the future.”She said so, also did so. She realized her promise fully, fulfilled her responsibility as a queen during her lifetime, so was loved by the whole nation, as well as a moral model at that time. She was th e epitome of that era in many people’s eyes. I think the reason why she enjoyed the high reputation ,not because that she did something sensational,

on the contrary, it’s exactly because that she did nothing beyond her duty, only abide by the constitutional monarch duty. I have to say she deserves this honor.

In this era, many aspects have been booming. The first of these is literature: it has a great diversity of nature and characteristics as a product of the times which expounded from some complex angles, including the romantic and realistic novels and poets. Along with these, there were many horror novels written as well. The 19th century saw the novels become the leading form of literature in English. The works by pre-Victorian writers such as Jane Austen and Walter Scott had perfected both closely observed social satire and adventure stories. Popular works opened a market for the novel amongst a reading public. Books, and novels in particular, became ubiquitous, and the "Victorian novelist" created legacy works with continuing appeal.

Next is the education. Education in Victoria is supervised by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD), which is part of the State Government and whose role is to provide policy and planning advice for the delivery of education. It acts as advisor to two state ministers, that for Education and for Children and Early Childhood Development.

What’s mo re is its justice. The Victorian period saw great changes in how people were caught, arrested and charged to appear in court. The police force, as we know it today, did not exist until 1856. Before then, most places had only an unpaid parish constable to keep order.

As for manners and etiquette in Victorian era. People’s words are always filled with grace and goodness, in spite of their real feelings. They also appear to control
