The rest that you get while sleeping makes it possible for your body to prepare itself for the next day. There are four levels of sleep, each being a little deeper than the one before. As you sleep, your body relaxes (放松) little by little. Your heart beats more slowly, and your brain slows down. After you reach the fourth level, your body shifts (变换) back and forth from one level of sleep to the other.Though your mind slows down, you will dream from time to time. Scientists who study sleep point out that when dreaming occurs, your eyeballs begin to move more quickly (although your eyelids are closed). This stage of sleep is called REM, which stands for rapid eye movement. If you have trouble falling asleep, some people recommend (建议) breathing very slowly and very deeply. Other people believe that drinking warm milk will make you drowsy. There is also an old suggestion that counting sheep will put you to sleep.12 The text suggests that not getting enough sleep might make you _____.A. dream more oftenB. feel tired and nervousC. suffer from poor healthD. breathe quickly13. AWhen I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm, in the winter especially, we wear quite out off from the outside wor ld. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to th e capital. However, I soon discovered that one big disadvantage is money. It costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like f ood and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer fr om asthma(哮喘), and the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to g o by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much todo in the city, whatever you tastes in culture or entertainment(娱乐活动). Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising --- and , what is more, shops are often only a short walk away. Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is , when you are i n your teens(十几岁)or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if yo u have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.1. What was the writer always thinking about when he was a c hild ?A. Staying on the farm.B. Leaving home for the c ity.C. Moving to the countryside.D. Successful people have al ways believed that they can be and will be successful in their l ives, such as Michael Phelps. Many people have admired his success and the first reaction in their mind will be, “Wow, ho w I wish I could be like him!” Have you ever wondered what br ought him success? In fact, anyone can achieve what they have wanted to achi eve. It is about beliefs. Everyone is a born winner. It is this bel ief that drives an individual to be successful in his or her own f ield. All successful individuals have strong beliefs and it is one of the bases for their success. If we start to believe in ourselv es, the things that we can achieve will definitely give us a plea sant surprise.Other than having a strong belief, it is the attitude that drives the individual to create their own history. The devotion towar ds themselves and the drive must also be present. Imagine h aving a strong belief in oneself and having a poor attitude tow ards life. Then how would that individual turn out to be? One’s attitude comprises the drive, the devotion and the desire to a chieve his goals. If one has strong beliefs about the goals that he can achieve and he displays good attitudes towards them, it would be no surprise to anyone that he will be able to achieve his goals.Start believing in yourself and you will achieve your goals a nd with the right positive attitude, you will definitely be able to create the miracle that you have always dreamt of.5. The Power of Beliefs and Positive AttitudesCThe Future of TechnologyWilliam, a businessman, arrives in a foreign airport. He doesn’t show his passport. Instead, a machine in the wall reads the computer chip(芯片)in his arm. This contains information about him: his name, ag e, and I.D number. He exits the airport, and a car door opens when it “sees” him. The car takes him to his hotel. His room “k nows” he has entered the building and it “reads” his body. He is cold, so the room becomes warmer. William then watches a business presentation on a video wall. When he takes a bath, the presentation “follows him and continues ”on the bathroom wall. Finally, the room plays music to help him sleep. It turns off the music when it “sees” him sleeping.William do esn’t exist, and none of this is real. But it might be s oon. “In five to ten years, computing and communications aregoing to be free and everywhere, in your walls, in your car, on your body,” says Victor Zue, leader of Project Oxygen. Project Oxygen has one big idea: to create better relationship s between machines and people. The dream is that computer will learn to understand what people want. So, what changes will there be at work? Firstly, the building wi ll know where everyone is, all the time. Parker Nettles is only 3 years old, but he knows what love looks like when he sees it. While walking with his parents in downtown Charleston, America in a gathering to honor the victims of a shooting last week, the little boy passed two women giving out free hugs. The city was full of emotion that day, with over 10,000 people gathered to honor the victims of the shooting. All of the churches rang their bells together at 10 a.m. Nettles said, “To him it’s just a hug. He doesn’t understand that he’s hugging two black women and that he’s a white boy. He doesn’t understand that just last week there was another white boy who decided to murder several black people — just because they’re black.” Nettles and his wife say they’ve made an effort to expose their son to love since the day he was born. Teaching him that there are both “loving hands” and “angry hands”, they’ve encouraged him to use his hands for positive actions. Last year, Nettles saw Parker rubbing a black student’s arm, and said that was the first time his son became aware of the concept of skin color. Even with all the hate the city has seen recently, everyone came together later that day to hold hands and march across the Arthur Ravenel Bridge to honor the victims. The family drove over the bridge as Parker looked out of the window in amazement. He even learned the peace sign signal and enjoyed waving and saying “peace” to everyone walking by. “I’m glad Parker gets to see our city respond in this way and prove that love wins,” Nettles said. “Going through these experiences will shape him into a much better person than my wife and I could have ever done.” 21. Which of the following is the theme of the passage? A. Love. B. Responsibility. C. Success. D. Peace. 22. What did Parker Nettles do in the gathering? A. Strike the bell in the church. B. Give free hugs to two black women C. March in his mother’s arms. D. Sit in the car with his father. 23. What can we learn from the passage? A. Parker knew the peace sign signal from the television. B. The Nettles are people who are kind and knowledgeable. C. Parker knew the concept of skin color at the age of two. D. It’s the first time for Parker to see the Arthur Ravenel Bridge. 24. What does Nettles think of the experience to his son? A. It will help him become brave. B. It will make him a good person. C. It will let him understand love. D.It will teach him something about peace.
