AThe Score: Looking for Jobs OnlineAnalysis shows that record numbers of Americans are visiting Job Search sites; younger women make up the biggest audience. The recent flood of advertisements from and Career Builder has reminded us that the New Year is a time to re-evaluate one's current job and perhaps seek a better career. In Search of Skilled Workers, Employers Go to Summer CampWith skilled-labor shortages looming, some employers are moving to solve the problem by winning the hearts and minds of the young -- the very young. In an effort to tap future workers in middle school or earlier, big employers, including IBM and Boeing, are increasing their backing of career-driven summer camps. The camps promote kids' interest in all kinds of fields. The efforts are yielding new opportunities for families, and insights into how to help kids explore promising careers.More Women Decide to Extend CareersThree years ago, after a long career with FedEx, Anne made a difficult decision: She accepted an early retirement offer when the company was downsizing.“It was a bit of an identity crisis for me,‖ says Anne, who is in her early 60s and divorced. ―I wasn't sure what I wanted to do.”After a lengthy search, she found another position in public relations at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. “I needed the structure of a full-time job, the stimulation of working with others, and the reward of being productive," she says. "The income was also welcome.‖1. On the website ―‖ we can see lots of advertisements about .A. clothesB. foodsC. monstersD. jobs2. There was a problem: a daughter had been born. She wasn‘t the first disappointment born to her family. Although my aunt didn‘t care about giving birth to a girl, her mother-in-law constantly reminded her of the criticism she would have to face if she gave birth to a daughter. In India, most people held these views. When I visited my relatives during the summer, one sentence managed to fill me with anger and start arguments with my so-called relatives. ―You are a girl, stay within your limits.‖ They simply don‘t know how different it is living in the US. Anyway, comparisons to my cousins led me to end the arguments for the moment and accept the way they lived their lives. My words didn‘t make sense to them so my mind was set on proving them wrong.Although their words didn‘t tear me apart, their actions managed to. The amount of sexism(性别歧视) in this culture, especially my hometown, made me feel bad. It was the 21st century, yet women had to eat after the men at family gatherings. They had to cook all the family meals and were asked to take jobs that required little skill or education. It was time to change these views. As I was growing older, the same relatives r epeatedly questioned me about my future: ―What do you want to be?‖ And the answer was always the same:electrical engineer. I have a passion forelectronics; as clichéd(陈词滥调的) as it sounds, I was born to do it. When I connect wires together to repair someth ing, I can‘t contain my excitement. But when I tried to explain this to my relatives, all of them, except for my parents and grandparents, would be shocked and laugh at me —laugh because they didn‘t think I could live up to my goals, being a ―girl and all‖. It was time to change these views. In my world, being a girl is not a problem. Rather, it is an opportunity to allow passion, not stereotypes(成见), to shape my future. I decided to channel my relatives‘ views into positive energy. Rather than letting them bring me down, I let them be motivation to achieve my goal of becoming an engineer. I, a female, will become a successful engineer.4. While her success in college and law school led to a high-profile job, she said, she ended up leaving to focus on public service. ―My message to you today is that don't waste a minute living someone else's dream,‖ she said. ―It takes lots of real work to discover what brings you joy and you won't find what you love simply by checking mailboxes or surfing the Internet.‖She said MLK reminded her of her own high school experience in Chicago.―My No.1 goal was to go to a high school that would push me and challenge me,‖ she said. ―I wanted to go somewhere that would celebrate achievements.‖ ―Unfortunately, schools like this don't exist for every kid,‖ she said. ―You are blessed.‖The first lady told the graduates that failure may be a part of their college careers, and that how they respond to difficulties determines what they will become. ―That's when you find out what you're really made of in those hard times,‖ she said. ―But you can only do that if you're willing to put yourself in a position where you might fail. Overcoming difficulties has been a mark of many great people,‖ she said. ―Oprah Winfrey was demoted(降职) from her first job as a news repo rter, and now she doesn't even need a last name,‖ she said of media giant Oprah Winfrey. ―And then there's this guy Barack Obama. That's res earch.‘‖In other words, what men and women call ―buying things‖ and how they approach that task are different.Women will wander through several 1,000-square-metre stores in search of the perfect party dress. Men will wander through 100 Internet sites in search of the perfect digital camcorder. Women see shopping as a social event. Men see it as a special task or a game to be won.―Men are frequently shopping to win,‖ says Ann, a marketing professor at Loyola University of Chicago. ―They want to get the be st deal. They want to get the best and latest one and if they do that, it makes them happy. When women shop, they're doing it in a way that they want everybody to be very happy,‖ says Ann. ―They're kind of shopping for love.‖―Teenage girls learn to shop f rom their mums and elder sisters, and they also learn to shop by examining articles in magazines like Seventeen,‖ Zukin says. ―And although men's magazinessuch as GQ and Esquire have long had shopping articles, it's TV that has the eye of young male shopp ers,‖ say Ann and Zukin.―Television shows are used by young men in the same way Seventeen or Lucky is used by girls,‖ says Zukin, ―to help make clothing and toiletry choices.‖―Of course, there are men who love to shop and are proud of it,‖ Ann says. This process, which helps us to deal with culture shock, is the way our brain and our personality react to the strange new things we encounter when we move from one culture to another.Culture begins with the "honeymoon stage". This is the period of time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We may be suffering from "jet lag" but we are thrilled to be in the new environment, seeing new sights, hearing new sounds and language, eating new kinds of food. This stage can last for quite a long time because we feel we are involved in some kind of great adventure.Unfortunately, the second stage can be more difficult. After we have settled down into our new life, we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family, friends, pets. All the little problemsin life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when you face them in a foreign culture. This period of cultural adjustment can be very difficult and lead to the new arrival rejecting or pulling away from the new culture. The third stage is called the "adjustment stage". This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humour usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor! The fourth stage can be called "at ease at last". Now you feel quite comfortable in your new surroundings. You can cope with most problems that occur. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them. There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don't know about. This is called "reverse (颠倒、交换)culture shock". Surprisingly, this occurs when you go back to your native culture and find that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle!.61.According to the passage, culture shock happens when we______A reach our teenagersB move to a big city for the first timeC go to live in a foreign countryD meet foreign people for the first time62. All of the following are about the second stage of culture shock EXCEPT______A we are homesickB we feel rejectedC we want to leave the new cultureD we successfully adjust ourselves63. The word “thrilled ”in Para2.most probably means______A excitedB hopelessC disappointedD helpless64. The fourth stage of culture shock doesn’t appear in the passage , but we conclude that at that stage we ________A become homesick againB feel comfortable in the new cultureC find things more difficultD find the new surrounding unsatisfyingSection C(4*2=8分)Directions:Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.To forgive is a virtue ,but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you ,it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However ,forgiveness is possible ,and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness ,anger and stress and more hopefulness ,according to a recent research.__65__ Try the following steps:Calm yourself.__ 66__ You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure:a beautiful scene in nature ,or someone you love.Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. If you wait for people to apologize ,you could be waiting an awfully long time. Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who caused you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings ,learn to look for the love ,beauty and kindness around you.__67__ If you understand your offender ,you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness ,fear ,and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.Don’t forget to forgive yourself.__ 68_ But it can rob you of your self confidence if you don’t do it.A.Why should you forgive?B.How should you start to forgive?C.Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.D.Try to see things from your offender’s angle.AB.For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.AC.To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique.65. A study was led by researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute(HCI)at the University of Utah and Arizona State University, including researchers from the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation may have found the answer. According to the results, elephants have 38 additional modified copies of a gene(基因)that encodes p53, a well-defined tumor(肿瘤)suppressor, as compared to humans, who have only two. Further, elephants may have a more powerful mechanism for killing damaged cells that are at risk for becoming cancerous. In isolated elephant cells, this activity is doubled compared to healthy human cells, and five times that of cells from patients with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome, who have only one working copy of p53 and more than a 90 percent lifetime cancer risk in children and adults. The results suggest extra p53 could explain elephants’increased resistance to cancer.“Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer. It’s up to us to learn how different animals overcome the problem so we can adapt those stra tegies to prevent cancer in people, ”says co-senior author Joshua Schiffman, M. D. , pediatric oncologist(肿瘤学家)at Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah School of Medicine, and Primary Children’s Hospital.According to Schiffman, elephants have long been considered a walking problem. Because they have 100 times as many cells as people, they should be 100 times more likely to have a cell slip into a cancerous state and cause the disease over their long life span of 50 to 70 years. And yet it’s be lieved that elephants get cancer less often, a theory confirmed in this study. Analysis of a large database of elephant deathsestimates a cancer death rate of less than 5 percent compared to 11 to 25 percent in people.9. Why do humans often get cancer compared to elephants according to the passage?A. Elephants are bigger than humans.B. Elephants have more p53 than humans.C. Elephants are not as clever as humans.D. Elephants eat more than humans.10. Which of the following is right according to the passage?A. Some damaged cells may be dangerous.B. Some damaged cells are not dangerous.C. Some damaged cells can’t be cancerous.D. Some damaged cells in elephants’bodies are more dangerous than those in humans’bodies.11. What can we know from the last paragraph?A. Elephants have more cells than people.B. Elephants can get cancer easily.C. Elephants seldom die from cancer.D. Elephants often die from cancer.12. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A. Elephants help usB. Learn from NatureC. How to deal with cancerD. Nature helps us prevent cancerDAutumn blues? Let the sunshine inFalling leaves, flowers, and cold winds, for many people late autumn can be a season of depression. Those who suffer from “the autumn blue” are often extremely tired, lack energy, need more sleep, feel increased appetite and gain weight. "The exact cause of this condition, often called seasonal depression or seasonal affective disorder (SAD), is not known yet," says Chen Jue, associate professor at Shanghai Mental Health Center. "But recent studies indicate that weather change is influential and strongly suggest that this condition is caused by changes in the availability(得到) of sunlight."One theory is that with decreased exposure to sunlight, the biological clock that regulates mood, sleep, and hormones is delayed, running more slowly in winter. Exposure to light may reset the biological clock. Another theory is that brain chemicals that transmit information between nerves, called neurotransmitters (for example, serotonin), may be changed in individuals with SAD. It is believed that exposure to light can correct these imbalances. "It is a sad season, but you can try to make it happy. Remember, spring always lives in your heart," Chen says. “Going outdoors to get some sunlight may reduce the tension that brings you the low spirits. Relax at work. Stretch, breathe deeply. Take a tea break. Think of your next vacation. Co lor treatment also works in handling low mood. Music also plays a role in treating autumn blues.”13. From the third paragraph we know that there ____ that can help to deal with autumn blues.A. is no biological clockB. is a real exampleC. are certain waysD. is no possibility14. Which of the following is true according to the text?A. People feel tired in autumn.B. Autumn blues can be feelings of happinessC. Weather doesn’t change people.D. It was windy and cold when a store owner was sticking a sign above his door that read
"Puppies for Sale." Just as he expected, a little boy soon appeared by the store owner's
sign.
"How much are you going to sell the puppies for?" he asked. The store owner replied,
"$10 for each." The little boy reached in his pocket and pulled out some change. "I have
$2.50" he said. "May I please look at them?"
The store owner smiled and whistled, taking out five dogs. One puppy was left behind,
immediately the little boy singled it out and said, "What's wrong with that little dog?"
The store owner explained that the little puppy was disabled. It would always be lame.
The little boy became excited. "That is the little puppy that I want to buy." The store
owner said "No, you don't want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I'll just
give him to you.”
The little boy got quite upset, looked into the store owner's eyes, pointing his finger,
and said, "I don't want you to give him to me. That dog is worth eveny bit as much as all
the other dogs and I'll pay full price. In fact, I'll give you $2.50 now, and 50 cents a
month until I have him paid for."
The store owner countered, "You really don't want to buy this little dog. He is never
going to be able to run and jump and play with you like the other puppies.'
On hearing this, the little boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly
twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the store owner
and softly replied, "Well, I don't run so well myself and the little puppy will need someone
who understands!”

Owning a smart phone may not be as smart as you think. They may let you surf the Internet,
listen to music and snap photos wherever you are... but they also turn you into a workaholic
(工作狂). A study suggests that, by giving you access to emails at all times, the all-singing,
all-dancing mobile phone adds as much as two hours to your working day.
Researchers found that Britons work an additional 460 hours a year on average as they
are able to respond to emails on their mobiles. The study by technology retailer Pixmania,
shows the average UK working day is between nine and ten hours, but a further two hours
is spent responding to or sending work emails, or making work calls. Almost one in ten
admits spending up to three hours outside their normal working day checking work emails.
Some workers confess (坦白) they are on call almost 24 hours a day, with nine out of ten
saying they take work emails and calls outside their normal working hours. Nearly two-thirds
say they often check work emails just before they go to bed and as soon as they wake up,
while over a third have replied to one in the middle of the night.
Ghadi Hobeika, marketing director of Pixmania, said, “The ability to access
millions of apps, keep in contact via social networks and take photos and video as well
as text and call has made smart phones valuable for many people. However, there are drawbacks.
Many companies expect their employees to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and
smart phones mean that people cannot get away from work. The more constantly in contact
we become, the more is expected of us in a work capacity (容量).”
