Working at a bank in New York City in the mid-2010s, Anna Sacks was not living the life she wanted. Sure, she was happy. But she wanted to do something that felt important. Some people seeking meaning might read a self-help book or perhaps volunteer a few hours a week. Sacks packed up her life and moved to Connecticut to participate in Adamah, a farming program that focuses on sustainable living and growing sustainable food. When she returned to New York, her life was with a new purpose and many new skills to make her dreams a reality.“One of the things that really stuck with me from Adamah was how little waste they produced and how they handled the waste they did have, primarily through composting (堆肥),” she says. The Adamah progr am opened Sacks’ eyes to the damage consumer culture is doing on a local, national, and global level, and the need to find solutions. So in 2017, she began what she calls “trash walking”.During tours around her community, Sacks picks through garbage to look for reusable items. Soon, her “trash walking” expanded to include corporate trash along with residential trash. Surprisingly, she discovered a wide range of really great stuff-like clothing, decorations, and food -all of which she documents on TikTok.Under the name The Trash Walker, Sacks quickly gained popularity for her videos that highlight the problems with consumerism. “The root issue is overproduction, which leads to overconsumption, which leads to a large amount of waste,” she says. The fact is, companies often choose to trash items rather than give them away to people who might need them. A big reason for this waste is the way our current tax laws are structured, Sacks says. Sellers who destroy goods can claim the cost as a loss on their taxes and be refunded. If they give away goods, they can claim only a small amount as a charitable reduction on their taxes.Sacks’ main focus is simply getting people to pay attention to how many unnecessary things they buy and then throw away. “Once you beco me aware of the way you consume, you can see ways you improve, ”she says.4. Why did Anna Sacks leave New York?A.To learn how to grow food. B.To pursue a more meaningful life.C.To realize her dream as a volunteer. D.To accept the invitation from a program.5. What impressed Anna Sacks most about the Adamah program?A.The significance of trash walking. B.The hard truth of consumer culture.C.The sustainable food people produced. D.The way people there dealt with thewaste.6. What makes companies prefer to throw out goods as trash?A.The tax refund. B.The tax reduction.C.The overproduction. D.The poor quality of goods.7. What can we learn from Anna Sacks’ story?A.Consumer culture accounts for wasting. B.Corporate trash outweighs residentialtrash.C.Turning to farming leads to sustainable living. D.Trash walking is the key to becoming wealthy. In parts of Africa, people communicate with a wild bird — the greater honeyguide-in order to locate bee habitats and harvest their stores of honey. It’s a rare example of cooperation between humans and wild animals, and a potential instance of cultural coevolution (共同进化). Brian Wood from UCLA and Claire Spottiswoode from University of Cape Town were lead authors on a study showing how this valuable partnership is maintained and varies across cultures.“Our study demonstrates the bird’s ability to learn d istinct voiced signals that are traditionally used by different honey-hunting communities, expanding possibilities for mutually beneficial cooperation with people,” Wood said. “Honeyguides seem to know the landscape well, gathering knowledge about the loca tion of bee nests, which they then share with people,” Spottiswoode said. “People are eager for the bird’s help.” The honeyguides also benefit from locating the colonies: They eat the leftover honeycomb.Spottiswoode and Wood’s study was done in cooperati on with the Hadza in Tanzania, with whom Wood has been conducting research since 2004, and the Yao community of northern Mozambique. Their prior work in both communities documented differences in how each culture attracts honeyguides. Among the Hadza, a honey-hunter announces a desire to partner with the bird by whistling. In Mozambique, Yao honey-hunters do so with a “Brr!”... followed by a “...hmm!”Using mathematical models and audio playback experiments, the team studied these signals, their usefulness to people and their impacts on birds. They experimentally exposed honeyguides in Tanzania and Mozambique to the same set of prerecorded sounds. This enabled the researchers to test whether honeyguides had learned to recognize and prefer the specialized signals that local honey-hunters used or were naturally attracted to all such signals. The honeyguides in Tanzania were over three times more likely to cooperate when hearing the calls of local Hadza people than the calls of ‘foreign’ Yao. The honeyguides in Mozambique were almosttwice as likely to cooperate when hearing the local Yao call, compared to the ‘foreign’ Hadza whistles. The study proposes that differences in honeyguide-attracting signals are not random, but make practical sense. While honey-hunting, both the Hadza and Yao come across mammals (哺乳动物), but only the Hadza hunt them, using bows and arrows. The Hadza’s hunting might explain the less notable whistles they use. Filmed interviews show Hadza hunters explaining that they can evade being detected by their prey (猎物) because their whistles “sound like birds.” Contrarily, the signal the Yao use to communicate with the honeyguide can help scare off animals they find dangerous.8. By cooperating with honey-hunting communities, honeyguides can _____.A.nest near human cultureB.locate bee habitats easierC.have access to more foodD.become familiar with the landscape9. Why did the researchers use the same prerecorded signals?A.To study their mathematical models.B.To check if they are a natural preference.C.To investigate their usefulness to humans.D.To see if they increase birds’ ability to find honey.10. What can we learn from Spottiswoode and Wood’s study?A.The human-bird relationship can change with new signals.B.The Yao community hunts animals while looking for bee nests.C.The honeyguides are more responsive to calls from the local people.D.The signals from the Hadza were more effective in attracting honeyguides.11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?A.How mammals react to different signals.B.How hunting techniques are applied to prey.C.How whistles enable honeyguides to find targets.D.How signals are associated with hunting practice. The Age of Information is bulging: if you tried to download all the data available today, you’d need more than 180 million years to do so. But you are wrong to assume that all information wouldstimulate a boost of innovation to match the output of data. Indeed, the last time we found ourselves in a period of significant innovation was over 120 years ago, called the Age of Insight.Innovations, big or small, start with a new idea. Often, these ideas occur as a moment of insight —the result of a novel connection in our brains made between existing and new information. Studies show insights involve quiet signals deep in the brain. Anything that helps us notice quiet signals can increase the chance of insights. However, it’s becoming more challenging to find those signals today, every moment filled with an endless supply of content.Besides, we also want to increase the quality of them to sort through big new ideas and find the really valuable ones that can be hard to measure. Launched in 2015, the Eureka Scale (尤里卡量表) allows us to assess the strength of our insight experiences on a five-point scale, namely, intense emotions, motivation, memory advantage, aftershocks, and following ideas. The Scale combines these five variables into a single value to define the importance of a new idea and has broad applications for measuring and improving individual and organizational performance. Even it can be used to measure the impact of different kinds of work environments and learning approaches on participants’ growth. The level-5 insight, involving the richest emotion, motivation, and lasting impact, holds the greatest significance. In order for organizations to benefit from another age of insight, it’s not enough to try to access more data or increase the number of insights we generate. Instead, it’s about making space for the biggest ideas to emerge from all the information. Using the Scale as a way to measure how important ideas are will enable better decision-making toward practical and competitive outcomes. If we’re to enter a new age of insight, we must make timely and necessary changes to design our environments for the best insight possible to surface.12. What does the underlined word “bulging” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A.Approaching. B.Exploding. C.Shifting. D.Updating.13. According to the passage, which of the following cases can increase the chance of insights?A.By engaging in ongoing social media interactions.B.By relying on technology to receive regular notices.C.By stepping away from computers between meetings.D.By participating in additional training and coaching sessions.14. What can be inferred from the passage?A.The Eureka Scale controls the influence of our insights.B.One with a level-5 insight has minimal emotional responses.C.Both the quantity and quality of insights are essential to innovation.D.A breakthrough has been made in innovation due to a wealth of information.15. What is the author’s attitude towards the current environment for innovations?A.Uncertain. B.Optimistic. C.Unconcerned. D.Dissatisfied.There are many reasons why some cats are bad-tempered. It’s commonly believed that their temperament can be influenced by the way they are born or raised. 16 According to veterinarian Dr Katrina Warren, the problem can generally be solved, but you’ll need to look for underlying issues.Changes in a cat’s behaviour can often be explained by a health problem. Pain can cause cats to behave differently. It’s easy to mistake a problem as behavioural, which in fact is medical. Should you observe a si gnificant change in your cat’s behaviour, then a visit to the vet is the best place to start. 17 Also hiding and avoiding being touched. Be sure to report all changes to your vet. There are many health problems that can be readily treated to ease symptoms and pain for your cat.It pays to remember that cats don’t like to share or queue. Sharing of ‘resources’ such as litter trays and foodbowls can cause stress and anxiety for many cats. It’s always a good idea to provide each cat with their own litter box, food, water bowls and bed. A lack of space to hide from or avoid other cats, competition for territory and lack of individual attention can also add to household friction. 18 Moving to a new house, the arrival of a new baby, new pets and other types of change can seriously impact cat behaviour. Cats are creatures of habit and tend to be territorial. 19 Try to keep your cat’s environment as calm as possible and ensure there are places where they feel safe.20 These are often cats that received limited socialisation with humans when they were kittens. These cats do best in a quiet household without children and need understanding and patience to help build their confidence.Gardening changed how I see myself as a disabled woman. The most significant factors contributing to the lower rates among Black students, the study found, were experiencing acts of discrimination and managing multiple priorities that can interfere with completing coursework. The report compiled data in fall 2022 from 6, 008 college students across different certification and degree programs, including 1, 106 Black students.21% of Black respondents said they felt discriminated against frequently or occasionally compared to 15% of other students. Black students were also more likely to have shared that they felt disrespected or psychologically unsafe at an institution while learning. 28% of Black students who attended an institution with little diversity felt physically unsafe, while 26% felt disrespected and 27% felt psychologically unsafe.Managing multiple priorities was another factor interfering with Black students’ education goals. The report found that 22% of Black students overall have caregiving responsibilities, compared to 11% of students in other racial groups, and 20% of Black students overall have full-time jobs, compared to 11% of other racial groups.Aside from discrimination and the task of managing responsibilities, the data also acknowledged other barriers making it difficult for Black students to complete their education, including the high costs of attending school. An April 2022 report by The Education Trust found that because Black women fall within two marginalized groups, they make less money and often have to takeout more loans to cover the cost of attending college.4.Which factor can’t lead to the lower rate of completing education among black students directly?A.Management of multiple priorities.B.Experiences of discrimination.C.The types of certificate or degree programs.D.High costs of attending school. 5.How did the researcher draw the conclusion?A.By referring to previous studies.B.By making some comparisons.C.By explaining causes and effects.D.By analyzing respondents’ psychology.6.What can we infer from the passage?A.About 21% of Black students feel discriminated against frequently.B.Black students feel discriminated mainly due to physical in security.C.Black students have to take full-time jobs for lack of access to loans.D.The black female students may be in the most disadvantaged position.7.What’s the author’s attitude towards the phenomenon referred to in the passage?A.Objective.B.Favorable.C.Critical.D.Concerned.A new study reveals new clues about the subtle(微妙的) but previously poorlyunderstood evolutionary dance happening between temperatures and changes in the size of animal body parts. The new research offers important insights about how birds may adapt to the rapid rise in temperatures driven by global climate change. For the study in Nature Communications, the researchers looked at nearly 7, 000 species of terrestrial non migratory birds—which is nearly two-thirds of all bird species—and focused on how bird species has evolved in ambient temperature(温度的梯度) and other factors of selection. Two widely accepted “rules” in biology indicate that as local temperatures change, animals are likely to adjust heat transfer capabilities by changing the size of their bodies and extremities(四肢).Biologist Carl Bergmann’s rule states that colder climates spawn bigger bodies because they help keep heat while smaller bodies help shed it. As a result, a polar bear is more than 2 1/2 times as tall at the shoulder as a sun bear from equatorial regions.Zoologist Joel Asaph Allen’s rule deals with extremities, such as limbs, ears, and beaks, stating that animals in colder climates tend to have smaller extremities because extremities tend to have more surface than volume and are uniquely suited to shed heat. For example, arctic hares have evolved short legs and ears, whereas desert jackrabbits have evolved very longlegs and ears.“The problem is that everything we know about ecology tells us that changing the size of bodies and extremities can be problematic,” says lead author Carlos Botero, an associate professor of integrative biology at the University of Texas at Austin. For example, if body size decreases, birds may not be able to hunt the same food as their ancestors. Similarly, if the average size or shape of a bill changes, birds may become less efficient foragers(觅食者) or have trouble producing typical mating calls. It is not surprising that many prior studies have failed to find evidence for these predictions and that these so-called biological rules are currently controversial. The new study could clarify that debate by showing that although the patterns that Bergmann and Allen predicted occur in the wild, the two separate mechanisms complement each other.8.What is the new study about?A.The two rules proposed by previous researchers.B.The differences between animals in cold and warm areas.C.The effect global climate change has on animals’ foraging.D.The way birds evolve in response to the rising temperature.A.make for B.bring in C.arise from D.wipeoutA.bigger bodies and longer legs.B.bigger bodies and shorter legs.C.smaller bodies and longer legs.D.smaller bodies and shorter legs. 11.What can we learn from the passage?A.The two rules with separate mechanisms are contradictory.B.The new study combines the prior studies and the two rules.C.The new study provides supporting evidence for the two rules.D.The two rules show animals change the body size to keep heatU.S. forests could worsen global warming instead of easing it because they are being destroyed by natural disasters and are losing their ability to absorb planet-warming gases as they get older, a new Agriculture Department report says.U.S. forests currently absorb 11 percent of U.S carbon emissions, or 150 million metric tons of carbon a year, equal to the combined emissions from 40 coal power plants, the report says. It predicts that the ability of forests to absorb carbon will start falling quickly after 2025 and that forests could emit up to 100 million metric tons of carbon a year as their emissions from rotting trees exceed their carbon absorption. Forests could become a “substantial carbon source” by 2070, the USDA report says. The prediction suggests that the loss of forests as a natural carbon absorber will require the U.S. to cut emissions more rapidly to reach net zero, said Lynn Riley, a senior manager of climate science at the American Forest Foundation.“Ten percent of our domestic emissions. That is a really significant portion,” Riley said. “As we work to decarbonize...forests are one of the greatest tools at our disposal. If we were to lose that, it means the U.S. will contribute that much more in emissions.”The loss of cab on absorption is driven in part by natural disasters such as wildfires, tornadoes and hurricanes, which are increasing in frequency and strength as global temperatures rise. The disasters destroy forestland, disrupting their ecosystem and decreasing their ability to absorb carbon, Riley said.Exploitation of forested areas, which the report projects will continue to increase, ishaving the same effect as people increasingly move to the so-called wild and urban interface. The trees’ ability to absorb carbon weakens overtime. Older, mature trees absorb less carbon than younger trees of the same species, and the U.S. forests are rapidly aging, the report found.More aggressive forest management can help by cutting down a small portion of aging forests to make ways for younger trees that absorb more carbon, Riley said. A thorough study of each forest should be done before removing older trees, Riley said, comparing forest management to prescribing the proper dugs to a patient.12.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A.Coal power plants emit 150 million metric tons of carbon every yearB.Cutting down all older trees is an effective way to solve the problem.C.A new study of forest should be conducted after removing older trees.D.Forests are likely to shift from a carbon absorber to an emission source.13.What can we infer from what Riley said in paragraph 3 and 4?A.Forests play a crucial role in holding carbon.B.Forests are no longer a natural carbon absorber.C.The U.S makes contributions to decarbonization.D.Achieving net zero emissions is within easy reach.A.aging forests B.natural disastersC.global warming D.development of forests15.What is the best title of the passage?A.Cutting Carbon Helps Slow Global Warming.B.Global Warming Is Becoming Worse Gradually.C.Forests Are Losing Their Ability to Hold Carbon.D.Planting More Trees Is at The Top of The Agenda.二、七选五The World Book Day, also called World Book and Copyright Day, falls on April 23rd.concentration and memory, and enhances your creativity and critical thinking skills.Despite the importance of reading, many students today don’t have a good habit of reading. There are a few reasons for this: lack of time and motivation, abundance of digital distractions and failure to stick to reading. However, these challenges can be overcome with your conscious efforts.First, you need to make time for reading by limiting time spent on social media or other leisure activities. Start with just 15—30 minutes a day of reading and you can work your way up to longer sessions. 17 Many libraries also have digital book options if you prefer e-readers or audiobooks.Second, build the habit by scheduling reading time each day and sticking to it. 18 Even just having a regular routine on certain days of the week, such as reading Monday to Friday after dinner for example, can help you cement(巩固,加强) it as a habit. Finally, track your progress to stay on track. Set monthly reading goals to achieve and record the books you read, how long the sessions were and any key insights gained. It is a traditional way to write on a notebook. 19 .By making reading a priority, limiting distractions, setting a regular schedule, and tracking your progress, you can successfully develop the habit of reading. 20 So take the first step to cultivate this important habit today.
