The best way to improve your reading ability is, of course to read. The student must make a real effort to improve his speed, and if necessary his comprehension, with each exercise. Too many students read passages passively and without judgment; they simply start at the first word and read through to the end. You should read a passage actively, selectively and purposely. You must believe that you indeed have the ability to read faster and understand, and that you will.

Reading, like everything else in life, is best done when you’re relaxed. The key to improve it is concentration(集中). You must be willing to break some old habits and form new ones. Extra body movement, such as turning the head from side to side,

pointing at the line with finger or pencil, or moving the lips, should be stopped immediately. Reading is mostly a mental process(大脑活动过程)and body movement helps neither speed nor comprehension. Then you should see words as part of whole sentence or paragraph, not just in isolation. This is why a slow, word-by-word student often understands far less, or misses much of the joy and excitement of reading.

The student must learn to improve reading skills on their own, and not just when a teacher is looking over this shoulder. Reading improvement takes discipline(训练) and effort. Don’t give up.

46. The best title for this passage is ________.

A. Reading Faster

B. Understanding Better

C. How to Improve Your Reading

D. Don’t give up

47. The phrase “in isolation” in the second paragraph probably means_______.

A. in a word

B. separately

C. one word

D. slowly

48. You may conclude that whether you can improve your reading depends on _______.

A. your attitude

B. your good habits of reading

C. discipline

D. all of above

49. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A. Reading skills must be practiced not only within the classroom but also at home.

B. You should recognize that noticeable improvement in reading will not happen overnight.

C. You can do best work when you’re relaxed.

D. It doesn’t matter moving your lips when you read.

C

There are different ways in which people try to deal with the problem of energy. One way is the greater production of common energy sources(能源), such as coal, oil and gas. The trouble with these sources, however, is that they are not renewable. Another way is energy conservation(节能), which means using energy more efficiently(有效地). In some very cold countries people build special houses to save energy. They place materials between the inside and the outside of the walls of the house to keep the cold out and the warmth in. The house is heated by the lights, the body heat of the people and the other equipment in it.

Finally, renewable energy sources are used even though they are often expensive to develop. One form of these is geothermal energy. In certain parts of the world the temperature of the earth increases thirty degrees centigrade with each kilometre down. At six kilometres, therefore, it rises to nearly two hundred degrees. To get the heat, water is pumped(压;抽)down into the rocks and back up to the surface. Heat from the earth is already used in certain countries.

50. How many ways of dealing with the energy problem are discussed in the text?

A. Two.

B. Three.

C. Four.

D. Five.

51. From the text we learn that coal ________ .

A. is quite easy to produce

B. is not used most efficiently

C. is the most common source of energy

D. could be renewed only by new technology

52. The writer tells about the “special houses” because they ________ .

A. show the excellent skills of the builders

B. serve as an example of energy conservation

C. are heated by different sources of energy

D. are warmer than other types of houses

53. The underlined wo rds “geothermal energy” in the third paragraph mean ____ .

A. renewable source

B. underground source

C. heat inside the earth

D. temperature of the earth

54. At a place where the surface temperature is 15℃, how deep do you have to dig so as to get a temperature of 75℃?

A. One km.

B. Two km.

C. Three km.

D. Four km.

Before the early 1960’s people interested in the differing roles of the left and right hemispheres(半球) of the brain depended almost entirely on facts drawn from animal research, form studies of patients with one-sided brain damage. But it was possible to find out which brain hemisphere was most involved in speech and other functions in normal people by having them listen to two different words coming to the two ears at the same time. This became known as the “dichotic listening” procedure. When several word pairs are given in a row, people are unable to report them all, and most right-handers prefer to report, and report more correctly, words given to their right ears. This seems to be related to the fact that signals from the right ear, although sent to both hemispheres, are better sent to the left hemisphere which controls speech. People who have speech represented(回忆) in the right hemisphere, a very unusual occurrence even in left-handed people, more correctly report what their left ears hear. In contrast to the right-ear advantage for speech, there is generally a left-ear advantage for another type of auditory(听觉的) signal: music. When right-handed people listen to melodic patterns they report them better from the left ear.

55. Which of the following would be the most proper title for the passage?

A. An Introduction to Speech Damage in Patients with Brain Damage.

B. An Investigation into the Role of the Brain’s Hemispheres.

C. An Analysis of Left and Right-handed People.

A. two different words in the same ear twice

B. the same word twice in the same ear

57 According to the passage, right-handed people normally _______.

A. have better hearing in their both ears

B. have little difficulty in reporting words given to their right ears

C. are unable to report word pairs given to their left ears

D. correctly report word pairs given in a row

58.According to the passage, music is best appreciated when heard by _______.

A. the left ear of right-handers

B. people with a left-ear advantage

C. left-handers in their right ears

D. right-handed people who understand melodic patterns

Nearly all the visitors to southeast France pay a visit a Monaco, too. Lying near the French-Italian border, Monaco is not part of France, but a separate principality (大公国)—though it is surrounded by its great neighbour.

Monaco became a principality in the 16th century after being owned by a family member of a certain Italian king. The French and Italian, however, soon came to protect it one after another until 1861, when it became its own master again.

Facing the blue Mediterranean (地中海), Monaco is mainly made up of two cities, Monaco, where the palace for the Prince stands, and Monte Carlo, which is a wonderful place for visitors. Every year, about half a million people come to Monaco, nearly 25 times as much as its population.

Monaco has no soldiers or policemen of its own. Law and order is kept by the French police, and the French stand for it in its foreign affairs, even the money used in Monaco is the franc, too.

59. Which of the following maps shows the right position of Monaco and its neighbouring countries? (Mc=Monaco, Fr==France, I=Italy, Md=Mediterranean)

60. Which of the following is TRUE?

A. The national income of Monaco must be very little.

In certain parts of the world the temperature of the earth increases thirty degrees centigrade with each kilometre down.表明进入地球内部后,地球内部温度上升规律为:每下降一公里温度上升30度。可见温度上升60度时应到达地下2公里的地方。本题是一道数字运算题,解题关键在于认真阅读分析原文找到运算公式或运算规律。

My Opinion on Cheating in Examinations

It is known to us all that some students cheat in examinations at school.

As students, we often take examinations at school, but sometimes we have too many examinations which are too difficult for us. On the other hand, not only are some of us lazy but they also don’t work hard at their lessons. So when taking examinations, they sometimes cheat in order to get better results to please their parents and teachers.

In my opinion/As far as I am concerned, it is wrong to cheat in examinations because it breaks the rules of schools. What we students should do is to be honest and try to get good results by studying hard instead of cheating in examinations. What’s more/in addition/besides, our study methods should be improved and only when we get well prepared for examinations can we get better results.
