Oliver Twist

《Oliver Twist》
《Oliver Twist》
《Oliver Twist》

Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
Oliver Twist was written in 1838 by Charles Dickens. This novel was published in London.
Charles Dickens, who was Britain’s greatest critical realist writer in the 19th century, created a great number of works which widely described British Victorian social life and revealed the evils of the bourgeoisie during the 19th century.
Oliver Twist who was the main character in this novel was an orphan. Because his mother died after delivering to him. He was sent to a building where twenty or thirty children lived and was given name. Mrs.Mann was given money to take care of those poor orphans, however, the woman used most of money on herself and fed children few food. When Oliver grew up, he was sent to workhouse. He had worked as busy as machine for three months and so hungry that he stood up to asked for much food. Considering Oliver may affect other working-children, Mr.Bumble sold him for 5 pounds to a coffin shop. Working at the coffin shop, Oliver would not go hungry. As a worker, he needed to help Mr.Sowerberry at funeral and on business journeys. However, elder apprentices were jealous of Oliver, so they laughed at and insulted him. Finally, Oliver couldn’t stand it. Because of his wild resistance to those bad gays. He beat savagely by the couple. As a result, he ran away to London after five-day walking.
Without food and rest, Oliver was tired and hungry. He met a boy whose name was Jack Dawkin. Oliver was taken into a messy house and joined the thieves without consciousness. Fagin who was the head of those thieves regarded Oliver as a clever boy who could earn much more money for him. As a matter of fact, Oliver didn’t know the real identities of this band. One day, Oliver was seized by policemen when his companions were stealing Mr.Browlow’money. Fortunately, the book owner proved Oliver innocence, and Mr.Browlow took him back home. It was a short time stand at Mr.Browlow’ home before Oliver was caught back by Fagin again. The life being controlled by Fagin and Bill was painful for little Oliver, but what made him felt most painful was that he was misunderstood and surrounded by cruel people.
They wanted to changed him into a thief eventually. But Oliver always kept kind and refused to be a thief. The pursuit of him was the pure life, he would never change. Because of his virtuous personality, Nancy who was Bill’s secret lover was conscious of her behavior and being a kind girl. Nancy helped little Oliver thoroughly. But finally she was killed for her help to Oliver by Bill. Oliver fled again. He met a warm family and told them all about himself. Out of compassion, Miss Rose helped him to meet his old friend kind Mr.Browlow and eliminated the misunderstanding. With the help of Mr.Browlow and Miss Rose, Oliver lived a peaceful life. The thieves organization was also defeated. Surprisingly, Oliver knew his real identity. He was the grandson of Mr.Browlow. The reason why he was caught by criminals was that his half-brother Monks didn’t want Oliver to gain the legacy of their father. All in all, it was a happy ending. Mr.Browlow regarded Oliver as his son and lived together. It was a great joy for little Oliver to have good friends so close to him.
Charles Dickens had always criticized society. From the story about Oliver, I found serious phenomenons during that time. For example, hospices didn’t take their responsibilities to take care of orphans. Some headmasters of hospices embezzled money which given to children. Also, some factor employed child labors, which was illegal. Moreover, the far more fearful thing was that criminal offenders were organized a lot of innocent kids to thief . Some poor children became beggars to beg for money. Maybe that was Charles really wanted to said, the society needed to change.
The charitable figures whom the writer created were really what we need in our daily life. Dealing with difficult situation, we should know our goal and identify truth and fault with a clear mind. No matter when and where we are, we ought to keep kind and rational. And if we have less greediness and more kindness, the world will be harmonious increasingly.(728)。
