The Enchantment of Creeks (1)Nearly everybody has a creek in his past, a confiding waterway that rose in the spring of youth.…….My creek wound between Grandfather’s apricot orchard and a neighbor’s hillside pasture. It banks were shaded by cottonwoods and redwood trees and a thick tangle of blackberries and wild grapevines. On hot summer days the quiet water flowed clear and cold over gravel bars where I fished for trout.Nothing historic ever happens in these recollected creeks. But their persistence in memory suggests that creeks are bigger than they seem, more a part of our hearts and minds than mighty rivers.Creek time is measured in the lives of strange creatures, in sandflecked caddis worms under the rocks, sudden gossamer clouds of mayflies in the afternoon, or minnows of darting like silvers of inspiration into the dimness of creek fate. Mysteries float in creeks’ riffles, crawl over their pebbled bottoms and slink under the roots of trees.While rivers are heavy with sophistication and sediment, creeks are clear, innocent, boisterous, full of dream and promise. A child can wade across them without a parent’s cautions. You can go it along, jig for crayfish, swing from ropes along the bank. Creeks belong to childhood, drawing you into the wider world, teaching you the curve of the earth. (214 words)29. What drifts in creek water is the possibility of other worlds inside and above our own. Poet Robert Frost wrote: “It flows between us, over us, and with us. And it is time, strength, tone, light, life, and love.Creeks lead one on, like perfume on the wind. A creek is something that disappears around a bend, into the ground, into the next dimension. To follow a creek is to seek new acquaintance with life.I still find myself following creeks. In high mountain meadows I’ll trace their course into the limegreen grass and deep glacial duff, marveling at the sparkle of quartz and mica. The pursuit liquefies my citified haste and lifts weight from my shoulders. Once, in the California desert, as hummingbirds darted from cactus blossoms, I heard the babble of rushing water. My ears led me over dusty hillsides and sown scabrous ravines to an unexpected ribbon of clear, cold water, leaping from rock to rock, filling little pools. The discovery seemed Biblical. 1.In this picture, we can see that a woman is doing shopping in a supermarket. She chooses a pair of slippers and buys other daily necessaries. Walking beside the place where fresh fruits are sold, she suddenly finds it unnecessary to buy slippers. So she throws them away without any hesitation. Seeing what happens, a customer behind her is shocked by her behaviour. We can learn from the picture that this phenomenon often occurs around us. Most people hate it when someone does something like this. Those who throw things without thought are believed to lack responsibility for society. That is to say, they only think of suiting their own convenience but ignore other’s feelings. So what she does is absolutely wrong. We should attach great significance to developing good habits and it is everyone’s duty to keep our environment clean.
2. Dear sir, I’m writing to request a valuable chance to be one of the host families of the British students. We have a large and clean house, which lies in a beautiful area of the city. I’m good at English and my parents are both professors of English, so I’m sure we won’t have any difficulty communicating with English speakers. 3. The boy and the girl in the picture sat on a bench talking merrily while eating a water-melon. When they went away they left the melon’s skin on the bench, making it very dirty. They didn’t want to take any trouble throwing it into the dustbin although it was very near where they were sitting. Instead, they said that there would be someone who should clean the rubbish. However, what they did violate public morality. If everyone behaves in this way, the world will be a big rubbish dump with flies flying round and people will live in a world of diseases. Besides, dustmen will have a very, very hard job to clean the world we live in.
4. It is known to us all that some students copy others’ homework. As students, we have to do plenty of homework both at home and at school, but sometimes we have some homework which is too difficult for us. On the other hand, some students are lazy, and are not interested in their lessons. They don’t work hard. In order to finish the assignments and please their teachers, some students copy others’ homework. In my view, it is wrong to copy others’ homework because it breaks the school rules. Students should be honest and try to finish our homework by ourselves instead of by copying. Even though we have trouble doing our homework we can ask our classmates or teachers for help.
5. Dear editor, I'm a student in Senior Three. We have made a survey--"Who do you turn to when in trouble?" Here are the results. Most of the students will go to their classroom or friends when in trouble they're almost of the same age, so they can talk with and understand each other easily. Some students will tell their teachers or parents about their troubles and ask for their help as the teachers and parents have rich experience and love them very much. They can be trusted by these students. Only a few students solve their problems all by themselves. They hate to talk with others and can’t get on well with others. They have few friends. Maybe his wife has been dead. On the right side is a big birthday cake sent by his son. And there are also some presents given by his daughter on the left. Yet the old man doesn’t feel happy. Instead, he looks very sad because he is lonely. Our life is getting better and better than before. Some people think that old people will be satisfied as long as they have enough to eat and drink.
