You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. There is no doubt that adults, and even highly educated adults, vary greatly in the speed and efficiency of their reading. Some proceed very slowly throughout; others dash along too quickly and then have to regress. Poor readers in particular may lack the ability to vary their manner of reading according to the type of reading matter and to their intentions in reading it. A good reader can move at great speed through the text of a novel or similar light reading matter. He may be able to skim a page, picking up a word or two here and there, and gain a general idea of what the text is about without really reading it. In reading more difficult material, with the intention of taking in the whole of it, he will proceed more slowly, but even then he will vary his pace, concentrating on the key words and passages, perhaps re-reading them several times and pass more quickly over the remainder. A less efficient reader tends to maintain the same speed whatever the material he reads. Consequently, even light reading matter gives him little pleasure because he reads so slowly. But this pace may be too fast for really difficult material which requires special concentration at difficult points.A type of reading which necessitates careful attention to detail is proofreading, in which the reader, in order to detect misprints in a sample print, has to notice not so much the meaning of what he reads as the exact shape and order of letters and words in the text. This is extremely difficult for most people, since they are accustomed to overlooking such details. In fact, considerable practice is required to practice this task efficiently and it can be done only by reading very slowly, and by paying comparatively little attention to the general meaning of the text.第1题The author claims that there is a difference in reading speed______.A.among readers who have different experienceB.among all the readersC.between the poorly educated and the highly educatedD.among the highly educated people第2题A good reader is a reader who______.A.concentrates on the wonderful part of the articleB.always reads slowly and carefullyC.changes his speed according to the kind of textD.changes his speed according to the interesting of the text第3题The author says that when reading a novel, a good reader can quickly read______.A.every part of the bookB.the most wonderful part in the bookC.the major part in the bookD.the scientific part of the book第4题The last two sentences of the first paragraph mean that______.A.a reading speed too slow for a difficult book is just right for a non-serious oneB.a reading speed too slow for a non-serious book may be too fast for a difficult oneC.A reading speed too fast for difficult material is just right for a non-serious book is also too slow for a difficult oneD.A reading speed too slow for a non-serious book is also too slow for a difficult one第5题Which of the following can be the tide of the passage?A.Reading and listening.B.Difference between highly educated and poorly educated.C.Practice reading skill.D.Difference in the speed and efficiency of reading.下一题(6~10/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from allthe terrible things that have been shown on the screen.Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and hear the politicians before an election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count.Unfortunately, television´s influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn´t do funny things like the people on children´s programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That´s the time it takes on the screen.第6题In the past, many young people______.A.knew the effects of warB.went in for politicsC.liked to save the wounded in warsD.were willing to be soldiers第7题Now with TV people can______.A.discuss politics at an information centerB.show more interest in politicsC.make their own decisions on political affairsD.express their opinions freely第8题The author thinks that TV advertisements______.A.are not reliable on the wholeB.are useless to peopleC.are a good guide to adultsD.are very harmful to the young第9题Which is NOT true according to the passage?A.People have become used to crimes now.B.On a TV screen some problems can be solved quickly.C.People now like to read books with pictures.D.The adults are less violent than the young.第10题From the passage, we can conclude that______.A.children should keep away from TV programs should be improvedC.children´s books should have pictures has a deep influence on the young上一题下一题(11~15/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished .statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages, I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic. Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal-clear memory of dogs, the farm animals, the local birds and above all, the insects.I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil, reading about other people´s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research. But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do notmake a scientist; one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of born worlds.第11题According to the author, a born naturalist should first of all be______.A.full of enthusiasmB.self-disciplinedC.full of ambitionD.knowledgeable第12题The first paragraph tells us that the author______.A.lost his hearing when he was a childB.didn´t like his brothers and sistersC.was born to a naturalist´s familyD.was interested in flowers and inserts in his childhood第13题The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he______.A.just reads about other people´s observations and discoverieses up with solutions in most natural waysC.has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmeticcks some of the qualities required of scientist第14题The author can´t remember his relatives clearly because______.A.he was fully occupied with observing natureB.he didn´t live very long with themC.the family was extremely largeD.he was too young when he lived with them第15题Which of the following statement is true?A.The author believes that a born naturalist cannot be a scientist.B.The author´s brothers and sisters were good at music and languages.C.The author read a lot of books about the natural world and the oil industry.D.The author spent a lot of time working on riddles.上一题下一题(16~20/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. They died when the ship went down. Men stood on the deck and smoked cigarettes. They died, too. This behavior is puzzling to economists, who like to believe that people tend to act in their own self-interest. "There was no pushing," says DavidSavage, an economist at Queensland University in Australia who has studied witness reports from the survivors. It was "very, very orderly behavior.´´Savage has compared the behavior of the passengers on the Titanic with those on the Lusitania, another ship that also sank at about the same time. But when the Lusitania went down, the passengers panicked. There were a lot of similarities between these two events. These two ships were both luxury ones, they had a similar number of passengers and a similar number of survivors. The biggest difference, Savage concludes, was time. The Lusitania sank in less than 20 minutes. But for the Titanic, it was two-and-a-half hours. "If you´ve got an event that lasts two-and-a-half hours, social order will take over and everybody will behave in a social manner,"Savage says. "If you´re going down in under 17 minutes, basically it´s instinctual." On the Titanic, social order ruled, and it was women and children first. On the Lusitania, instinct won out. The survivors were largely the people who could swim and get into the lifeboats.Yes, we´re self-interested, Savage says. But we´re also part of a society. Given time, social norms can beat our natural self-interest. A hundred years ago, women and children always went first. Men were stoic. On the Titanic, there was enough time for these norms to become forceful. 第16题According to the author, economists were confused because______.A.people´s behavior was disorderly on the TitanicB.people did not act in their own interest on the TitanicC.most men did not act in their own interest on the LusitaniaD.women and children could not climb into the lifeboats第17题The expression "won out" in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to "______".A.took the upper handB.went out of controlC.ran wildD.shut down第18题According to David Savage, ______was a critical factor in determining people´s behavior in the sinking of these two ships.A.social orderB.placeC.instinctD.time第19题According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE?A.Both ships were expensive ones.B.A similar number of women and children from both ships survived.C.About the same number of people from each ship died.D.Both ships had a similar number of passengers.第20题Which of the following is an appropriate title for this passage?A.Why Didn´t Musicians Play on the Lusitania?B.Why Did Musicians Play on the Titanic?C.Why Didn´t Passengers Panic on the Titanic?D.Why Did Men Smoke on the Titanic?上一题下一题(1/29)Vocabulary and StructureDirections: In this part there are 30 incomplete sentences. He argues that there are three main reasons for keeping the penny: Without it, we would become more reliant on the five-cent coin, which also has problems: charities(慈善机构)that depend on penny drives would not be able to raise as much money: and a 2012 survey shows that 67% of Americans want to keep the penny. Many people surveyed said they feared they would end up paying more for products. Many experts disagree with ACC. They point to the dozens of countries that have gotten rid of their lowest-value coins without raising prices for consumers. And charities don’ t seem too concerned either. President Barack Obama says the mint could explore using cheaper metals to make pennies. Steel is less expensive than zinc. Pennies are 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper. But no matter what it is made of, the penny’s days may be numbered. Most in-store purchases are now made with credit cards, not cash. Is it time for a change?1.What is the main idea of the passage?A.Many countries are trying to reduce the cost of making coins.B.These days a penny made is a penny wasted.C.There is disagreement over whether the U. 成人高等教育学士学位英语模拟试题及答案解析(3)

成人高等教育学士学位英语模拟试题及答案解析(3)(1~5/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished .statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Normally a student must attend a number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a grade which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree is made up of thirty-six courses each lasting for one term. Generally, a course is made up of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two terms each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not done as a regular practice. For every course that follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded and available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this sets a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activities in student affairs. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating is to appear before a student court. With the large numbers of students, the operation of the system has something to do with a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.第1题Normally a student would at least attend ______classes each week.A.36B.20C.12D.15第2题According to the first paragraph an American student is allowed______.A.to live in a different universityB.to take a particular course in a different universityC.to live at home and drive to classesD.to get two degrees from two different universities第3题American university students are usually under pressure of work because______.A.their academic performance will affect their future careersB.they are heavily involved in student affairsC.they have to observe university disciplineD.they want to run for positions of authority第4题Some students are enthusiastic for positions in student organizations probably because______. A.they hate the constant pressure strain of their studyB.they will then be able to stay longer in the universityC.such positions help them get better jobsD.such positions are usually well paid第5题The student organizations seem to be effective in______.A.dealing with the academic affairs of the universityB.ensuring that the students observe university regulationsC.evaluating students´ performance by bringing them before a courtD.keeping up the students´ enthusiasm for social activities下一题(6~10/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished .statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. It seems like every day there´s some new research about whether our favorite drinks are good for us. One day, science says a glass of red wine a day will help us live longer. The next day, maybe not. It seems journalists are pretty interested in wine research and the same might be said for coffee. Now, there´s been a lot of research into whether coffee is good for our health. "The results have really been mixed," admits Neal Freedman who led the coffee study and published his findings in a medical journal recently. "There´s been some evidence that coffee might increase the risk of certain diseases and there´s also been maybe more recent evidence that coffee may protect against other diseases as well."Freedman and his colleagues undertook the biggest study yet to look at the relationship between coffee and health. They analyzed data collected from more than 400,000 Americans ages 50 to 71 participating in the study. "We found that the coffee drinkers had a modestly lower risk of death than those no-drinkers," he said. Here´s what he means by "modestly" : those who drank at least two or three cups a day were about 10 percent or 15 percent less likely to die for any reason during the 13 years of the study. When the researchers looked at specific causes of death, coffee drinking appeared to cut the risk of dying from heart disease, lung disease, injuries, accidents and infections. Now, Freedman stressed that the study doesn´t prove coffee can make people live longer. A study like this can never prove a cause-and-effect relationship. All it can really do is to point researchers in the right direction for further investigation. And even if it turns out that coffee is really good for you, scientists have no idea why.第6题According to the first paragraph, reporters would like to, know the research findings of______.A.teaB.beerC.alcoholD.coffee第7题According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?A.Freedman and his colleagues hired 400,000 Americans to collect data.B.About four hundred thousand Americans worked for Freedman´s team full time for 13 years.C.People who took part in Freedman´s research are about 50 to 70 years old.D.People who are 50 to 70 years old seldom drink coffee.第8题According to the author, scientists______.A.have already proved that coffee is good for human healthB.have a long way to go before they find a way to study coffeeC.have avoided the cause-and-effect approach to study coffeeD.are still unable to figure out why coffee is good for us第9题The word "mixed" in the first paragraph means "______".A.both good and badB.put togetherC.both sharp and softD.confuted第10题Which of the following is an appropriate title for this passage?A.Can Beer Help You Live Longer?B.Can Coffee Help You Live Longer?C.Can Wine Help You Live Longer?D.Can Tea Help You Live Longer?上一题下一题(11~15/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished .statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Newspapers are not nearly as popular today as they were in the past. There are not very many people who seriously read a newspaper every day. Most people read only the sports pages, the advice or the gossip columns, the comics, and perhaps the classified advertisements. Most people don´t take the time to read the real news. Newspaper editors say that their readers are lazy. They say they have to trick people into reading the news. They attempt to catch the reader´s interest with pictures and exciting headlines. These techniques are used on the front page because it is the first thing you see when you pick up the paper. The first page attracts attention and encourages the reader to look through the rest of the paper. This is why editors always look for a good first page story and headline to make them stop and look. If the headline is horrible enough or frightening enough or wild enough, perhaps they will go on to read the front page. However, they may just read the headlines, but that is all, then they turn to the sports page, or comics, or advertisements. It seems that people do not want the news from a newspaper anymore. They say they get the news on the television now. More people watch television news because it is easier and more interesting than reading a newspaper. What about you? Do you read news from a newspaper? Do you think it is easier to get the news from television? Or do you care about news at all? Would you mind if there were no news?According to the writer, newspapers are______.A.more popular todayB.less popular todayC.as popular as beforeD.getting more and more popular第12题Editors think the important part of the paper is______.A.the headlinesB.the sports pageC.the front pageD.the classified advertisements第13题According to the article, most people read all of the following except______.A.the real newsB.the sports pageicsD.advertisements第14题Today more people get news from______.A.newspapersB.radioC.televisionD.both A and B第15题A lot of newspaper readers do not even read the front page anymore because______.A.they don´t have timeB.they are lazyC.the front page is not attractive enoughD.the headlines are too horrible and frightening上一题下一题(16~20/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished .statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. The annual campaign to make Singapore´s three million people more polite ended yesterday and was immediately followed by another drive to get them to be punctual.Tardiness is not yet a criminal offence in the island republic, and the National Punctuality Working Committee can only use gentle persuasion. "Being on time means being considerate," said committee chairman Toh Weng Cheng. Previous drives made little headway in changing a deeply rooted habit that seems oddly out of place in this otherwise efficient city-state. Tardiness at dinner parties is usually attributed to Chinese tradition, a belief that older and more important guests were expected to make an entrance afterMeanwhile, officials will assess the results of the 15th annual courtesy campaign, a HK $ 2. 4 million drive to persuade Singaporeans to mind their manners. Earlier courtesy campaigns used posters, films, advertisements in newspapers and magazines to portray considerate behavior. The publicity this year stressed courtesy through examples of discourtesy. Few countries use elaborate public campaigns to change behavior and raise civic consciousness. It has been a way of life in Singapore for more than 30 years. Some, like the courtesy drive, deal with basic habits and culture.October was first declared "Speak Mandarin Month" in 1978, an effort to wipe out regional Chinese dialects in favor of the official tongue.Others focus on problems of the day. The police launched a drive in 1989 to stop abuse of the emergency phone number 999, because one call in five was of the nuisance or non-emergency variety. Some campaigns have been so successful that they have been reversed. Family planners urged parents to "Stop at Two" in 1978. Birth rates dropped from 3. 5 percent in 1960 to 1.2 percent in 1980, and families who can afford it are now encouraged to "Have Three or More". By the early 1980s, the growth of campaigns inspired one exhausted newspaper columnist to suggest a "take your campaigns seriously campaign".第16题In the passage, the word "tardiness" ( Line 1, Paragraph 2) most probably means______.A.punctualityB.impolitenessC.dishonestyteness第17题The courtesy drive was launched in Singapore to______.A.develop appropriate personal habitsB.stress the importance of punctualityC.make the people more politeD.urge the officials to be on time第18题When did the campaign to standardize spoken language begin?A.In 1960.B.In 1978.C.In 1980.D.In 1989.第19题Which of the following is NOT true?A.Singapore has always been a highly efficient country in every way.B.The campaigns are not always very effective in Singapore.C.Singapore does its best to make its people more polite.D.Not all the campaigns are launched every year.第20题Which of the following statements is not directly said but implied in the passage?A.All the campaigns are to improve people´s behavior.B.There are too many campaigns in Singapore.C.The more campaigns, the more efficient they are.D.Almost all campaigns in Singapore don´t amount to anything.上一题下一题(1/29)Vocabulary and StructureDirections: In this part there are 30 incomplete sentences. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. In ancient times the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates for the doctor degree. Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same question, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modem industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Generally, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an “ objective” test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like correct answers to students who have not learned the material properly.1.In the Middle Ages students( ).A.took objective testsB.specialized in one subjectC.were timed by electric clocksD.never wrote exams正确答案:D解析:细节题。

成人高等教育学士学位英语模拟试题及答案解析(6)(1~5/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished .statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Computer technology is advancing so fast that old hardware quickly becomes completely obsolete. The electronic waster (e-waste) from this constantly growing field is polluting the environment, both here and abroad.Computers contain toxic materials such as lead. Despite the danger of throwing these hazardous materials in a landfill, that´s exactly where tons of computers end up. Americans reuse or recycle only about 10 percent of the 50 million computers they replace each year, according to ABC News. Eighty percent is being stockpiled, which could create even bigger problems in the future, and the remaining 10 percent is landfilled. Throwing e-waste in landfills creates a potential for toxic waste to leak into our soil and groundwater. Because environmental stands for landfills are tougher in the United States than in many other countries, e-waste is often exported, especially to some developing countries. Some countries are creating policies to deal with the growing e-waste problem. In the Netherlands , you can bring your old computer to the seller when buying a new one, and the seller must by law accept it free of charge. Japan passed a law in 2001 requiring producers to recycle certain parts. In the United States, a movement called the Computer TakeBack Campaign is demanding that producers take more responsibility for disposing of old computers, California and Massachusetts recently prohibited certain computer parts in landfills, while Apple and IBM take back computers for a-bout a $ 30 fee. Gateway is one step ahead: They will pay you $ 50 for recycling your old computer when you buy a new one from them. Lastly, many nonprofit programs accept used equipment, and services have popped up that distribute old computers to schools and other organizations.第1题Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A.The Main Exports of America.B.The Computer TakeBack Campaign.C.The Harm of E-waste Treatment.D.Electronic Waste—a Global Problem.第2题What does the word "obsolete" in the first paragraph probably mean?A.Fashionable.eful.C.Out of date.D.Out of control.第3题Americans reuse about ______million computers each year.A.5B.10C.15D.20第4题According to the passage, American electronic waste is exported to other countries because these countries have______.A.the resources and more space to process the e-wasteB.less strictly enforced environment safety standardsC.a lot of skilled e-waste workersD.many computer recycling businesses第5题According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Japan passed a law to address the e-waste problem.pared with stockpile, landfill is a better and safer method to deal with e-waste.C.Apple will pay you $ 50 for recycling your old computer when you buy a new one from them.D.Old computers are safe to the environment even when improperly disposed of.下一题(6~10/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished .statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Long bus rides are like television shows. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end—with commercials thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not. Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window. "Buy Super Clean Toothpaste." "Drink Root Beer." "Fill up with Pacific Gas." Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off, are you spared the unending cry of "You Need It! Buy It Now!"The beginning of the ride is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if you´ve traveled that way before. Usually some things have changed—new houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. The bus driver has a style of driving and it´s fun to try to figure it out the first hour or so. If the driver is particularly reckless or daring, the ride can be as thrilling as a suspense story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right or the left-hand lane? After a while, of course, the excitement dies down. Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride. Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But you´ve got to be careful of what kind of food you eat. Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops. The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there´s a kind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat, of course, has become harder as the hours have passed. There are almost 2,000 of them, as compared with 155 in Japan, 164 in Argentina and 111 in Britain. The quality of some American papers is extremely high and their views are quoted all over the world. Distinguished dailies like the Washington Post or the New York Times have a powerful influence all over the country. However, the Post and the Times are not national newspapers in the sense that The Times is in Britain or LeMonde is in France, since each American city has its own daily newspaper. The best of these present detailed accounts of national and international news, but many tend to limit themselves to state or cite news.Like the press in most other countries, American newspapers range from the " sensational" , which feature crime, sex and rumor, to the serious, which focus on factual news and the analysisof world events. But with few exceptions American newspapers try to entertain as well as give information, for they have to compete with television.Just as American newspapers give way to all tastes, so do they also try and apply to readers for all political persuasions. A few newspapers support extremist groups on the far right and on the far left, but most daily newspapers attempt to attract middle-of-the-road Americans who are essentially moderate. Many of these papers print columns by well-known journalists of different political and social views, in order to present a balanced picture. As in other democratic countries American newspapers can be either responsible or irresponsible, but it is generally accepted that the American press serves its country well and that it has more than once bravely uncovered political scandals or crimes, for instance, the Watergate Affair. The newspapers drew the attention of the public to the fears of the Vietnam War.第11题There are fewer national newspapers in______.A.Britain than in the USAB.France than in BritainC.the USA than in Britain or FranceD.France than in the USA or Britain第12题Most American newspapers try to entertain their readers because______.A.they have to keep up a good relation with themB.they have to compete with televisionC.they have to write about crime, sex and rumorD.they have to give factual news in an interesting way第13题Many American newspapers attract readers of different political tendency by______.A.supporting extremist groups from time to timeB.inviting middle-of-the-road Americans to write articles for themC.avoiding carrying articles about extremistsD.printing articles representing different political viewpoints第14题In this passage, the word "press" (Para. 2) means______.A.a machine for printingB.the business of printingC.great forceD.newspapers第15题The passage is mainly about______.A.the characteristics of American newspapersB.the development of American newspapersC.the functions of American newspapersD.the merits and shortcomings of American newspapers上一题下一题(16~20/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Traditionally, universities have carried out two main activities; research and teaching. Many experts would argue that both these activities play a critical role in serving the community. The fundamental question, however, is how does the community want or need to be served? In recent years universities have been coming under increasing pressure from both the governments and the public to ensure that they do not remain "ivory towers (象牙塔)" of study separated from the realities of everyday life. University teachers have been encouraged, and in some cases constrained, to provide more courses which produce graduates with the technical skills required for the commercial use. If Aristotle wanted to work in a university in the UK today, he would have a good chance of teaching computer science but would not be so readily employable as a philosopher.A post-industrial society requires large numbers of computer programmers, engineers, managers and technicians to maintain and develop its economic growth but "man" , as the Bible says, "does not live by bread alone. " Apart from requiring medical and social services, which do not directly contribute to economic growth, the society should also value and enjoy literature, music and the arts. Because they can also promote economic growth.A successful musical play, for instance, can contribute as much to the Gross National Product through tourist dollars as any other things.第16题The main idea of the first paragraph is that______.A.traditional universities do a good job serving the societyB.universities must meet the needs of the societyC.research and teaching are of great importance in universitiesD.universities play an important role in our society第17题We can infer from the second paragraph that______.A.the society is not satisfied with the present college educationB.the governments interfere too much with college educationC.teachers are forced to do what they don´t like to doD.teachers dislike teaching commercially useful courses第18题The Aristotle example is used to make the point that______.A.universities in the UK have produced too much good for graduatesB.such abstract subjects as philosophy is no longer usefulcation should serve the social needsD.it is advisable for today´s philosophers to know computer science第19题According to the passage, literature, music and the arts______.A.do not contribute to economic growth at allB.are less useful to the society because they do not make direct contribution to economic growthC.are similar to medical and social services in their way of promoting economic growthD.should develop only when they are good for economic growth第20题The author believes that______.A.art is useful only when it is made into a money earnerB.the promotion of economic growth is the only goal of today´ s societyC.universities should not provide literature or art coursesD.the society needs both technical skills and arts上一题下一题(1/29)Vocabulary and StructureDirections: In this part there are 30 incomplete sentences. TranslationPart I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow money from you, you say, “I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money, but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie? A scientific study of lying shows women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a white lie, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks terrible. Other research shows that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain. (76) Research has also been done into the way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, seemingly unimporant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the same time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now.”1.This passage tells us that ______ .A.telling lies is often necessary in order to avoid being defeatedB.telling lies is often bad because people ought not to be dishonestC.telling lies is sometimes necessary in order not to hurt someone else’s feelings D.telling lies is not bad at all in most cases正确答案:C解析:推理题。

Passage 1 How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.

Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always to

presenting new things to the child — things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things, or being punished for what he has done wrong.

When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If
