I am not sure why it wouldn’t let me log in; perhaps it was my ancient, out-of-date phone. But I wasn’t too upset because it offered me an opportunity to take a break from social media — something more and more people are doing. In the United States, Twitter is losing millions of users each month and Facebook has seen a 44 percent decline among its younger users. Some of these users may have deserted Twitter and Facebook for other social media platforms, while many others have quit because they felt that social media was having a negative effect on their happiness and overall quality of life.Stars such as Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeren have taken a break from social media because they were tired of many Internet trolls (网络喷子) leaving negative comments. Ordinary people (like me) are turning away from it because of the feeling that they were spending more time online and enjoying it less.It is not unusual for people to spend two or three hours a day posing or reading posts, to the point where it becomes an addiction. And it is an addiction. There is a chemical in your brain known as dopamine (多巴胺) which is sometimes called the “reward molecule” and its release gives you a feeling of pleasure. For instance, when you post a photo on WeChat and get a hundred likes, you feel happy. That’s dopamine at work.In my case, being off WeChat left me with a feeling of anxiety for a few days. No doubt I missed my dopamine. And I got e-mails from friends wondering if I was fine or if I was just being anti-social. But I soon began to feel quite peaceful and started to worry less about what other people were doing and concentrate more on my personal life. And it is an added bonus that I’m getting better sleep at night.I’m not advocating that all of you quit social media, but spending less time on these platforms does bring you advantages. You could start by leaving your phone at home when you go to school (For some, that’s already a school rule). And it is also a good idea to charge your phone outside of your bedroom at night, as you are unlikely to get a good night’s sleep when the notification (通知) bell keeps ringing.Someday I may reconnect with my WeChat account, but I’m not in a hurry. Life can be more relaxing and just as interesting without it.21.The author’s disconnection with WeChat is mentioned at the beginning to_________.A.introduce the disadvantages of social mediaB.explain why he lost access to his WeChat accountC.illustrate the function of dopamineD.prove how WeChat makes life easier22.The fourth paragraph mainly talks about _________.A.how dopamine works when you are posting or reading posts.B.the reason behind people’s addiction to social media.C.why WeChat is so popular among ordinary people.D.what you can do if you want to get many likes on WeChat.23.What is the author’s attitude towards social media?A.To turn away from them as soon as possible.B.To choose a social media platform that suits you.C.To keep away from them temporarily is a wise choice.D.To quit them will make your life more relaxing and interesting. A “gap year” is a period of time when a student takes a break before going to university, or before a postgraduate course. 29.That helps young people with useful learning experiences, new skills and makes them more independent. She says: “During my gap year, I spent four months in Kenya teaching English, art and physical education to children aged 8-18. 32.I am very happy that I didn’t head off to university straight after school because I learned a lot about myself. A★★★☆☆Host:If you're like most people, you probably have a fridge with a number of half-used packages inside. Too often, eventually what's left goes bad and ends up in the garbage (垃圾). That waste was part of the reason Sarah Metz decided to open a store called 'The Fillery.' It's designed to reduce waste and save money. You see, at The Fillery, shoppers will bring their own reusable containers and only buy what they need. So, tell us about The Fillery. I thought back to a small store I shopped at in Michigan, and I really loved that concept, and, still, after 10 years of living in my neighborhood, nothing like that exists. So, I just decided to do it myself.Host:So, by how much do you expect to reduce food waste?Sarah: Community education is a major part of what we hope for The Fillery to offer, and part of that will be teaching people how to plan their meals and how to buy in quantities that are usable for them before the product goes bad.Host:Hey, what will you do when people come to your store without containers?Sarah:We will provide paper bags for dry goods, for free, for all customers. Right now I'm a second-year student at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) studying for a degree in painting. I worked as a doctor in Dallas, Texas for 25 years, until I hit a point where I had to jump. But I'm still surprised where I landed! While vacationing on Tybee Island with my wife Kim, we saw bus after bus with SCAD on the side. A seed was planted. At that time Kim and I were still living in Dallas. We were considering retiring. We went to Tybee one Thanksgiving, and as we drove through Savannah we spotted a little cottage for sale. We bought it. The house had a sunroom with big windows, and we thought, 'Those would look great with stained glass (彩绘玻璃).' I decided to design images (图像) for the stained glass. I started drawing some shore birds, and Kim said, 'I didn't know you could draw!' When the increasing stress of practicing medicine made it clear that I needed to retire I thought, 'Now what am I going to do?'Kim said, 'Why don't you go to SCAD?' Great idea, but I needed a portfolio (作品集) to apply. I found a creative arts place for adults in Dallas and started taking classes. What will I do with my art degree? I'm not sure yet. A second career is attractive. In any event, attending SCAD is a process of discovery, which is what a university experience should be. I entered SCAD as a painting major but I'm keeping an open mind. Each time I take a new class I love it. I was never a history enthusiast, but now I love art history. If I were to give a talk to someone, I would say, 'When you get an opportunity, realize the door only opens up so much, and stays that way for so long. Don't hesitate; go for it. Just jump!'4. What did the author do on Tybee Island?A. He created artwork for his house.B. He bought some stained glass.C. He planted a tree seed.D. He built a cottage.5. He went to university to do an art degree.B. He made a historical discovery.C. He exhibited his portfolio.D. He practiced medicine.7. What's the author's advice for his readers?A. Never give up.B. No pain, no gain.C. Seize the opportunity.D. Look before you jump.C★★★★☆Bacteria can spread even in the cleanest places. Surgeons (外科医生) wash their hands and wear gloves before they work, but any bacteria they pick up after that can spread to their patients. Tatiana Ortiz's research could one day help prevent some hospital infections. The 15-year-old presented her results at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, an annual competition for students worldwide to show off their scienceprojects. And by doing this research to help others, Tatiana conquered her own fear of bacteria.Tatiana suffers from asthma —a disease that can make it hard for her to breathe. Breathing becomes especially tough when she gets an infection. It made her truly fear bacteria. To fight her fears, her parents encouraged her to study bacteria for her science projects. And she did.Working in a local hospital's lab with a microbiologist, the teen grew bacteria groups. She got them from a surgical bed handle, something that doctors or nurses might touch often during surgery.Tatiana then got 32 surgical gloves, which she divided into four groups. Each group got a different treatment. She coated one set with Sharklet-film, a film that prevents bacteria from attaching. She treated another eight with Sani-Shield, a spray (喷雾) that also stops bacteria from sticking. She used a bacteria-killing cleaning product on eight more. She applied colloidal silver, known for its bacteria-killing functions, to the last eight. The most effective treatments were the Sharklet-film and the Sani-Shield spray. They reduced the number of bacteria by 44 percent. The bacteria killers were less effective. They may simply need a longer contact (接触) time with the bacteria, Tatiana suspects. The teen hopes that adding a coating to the gloves to prevent bacteria from sticking will decrease infections in hospitals. First, she needs to make the gloves and test them —her next research goal. But as she studied bacteria, Tatiana found she got rid of her fear of bacteria. Now when it comes to bacteria, she says, 'I can defeat the enemy!'8. What's the purpose of Tatiana's research?A. To treat her illness.B. To win a competition.C. To help cut hospital infections.D. To prevent doctors getting infected.9. Why did Tatiana fear bacteria?A. They can infect people easily.B. They can cause serious diseases.C. She was once badly infected with bacteria.D. She got worse symptoms when infected with bacteria.10. Where did Tatiana get the target bacteria for her research?A. A local lab.B. A surgical bed handle.C. A doctor's surgical gloves.D. A microbiologist's bacteria groups.11. What did Tatiana do in her research?A. She used different bacteria prevention methods on each group.B. She gave each group a different amount of contact time.C. She used different amounts of bacteria for each group.D. She divided the surgical gloves into two groups.D★★★☆☆UNESCO published its Human Development Report, which makes Norway a model of health for the rest world. The report looks at many points, including life expectancy and average number of years spent in school. Norway ranked number one in their data.Since Norway is setting a good example for how to live, we thought now would be a good time to take a look at how Norwegians eat. Here's what you should know:The Norwegian breakfast doesn't look anything like atraditional American breakfast. Breakfast is a light thing. There's also often meat and fish. And coffee is a must. Heavy egg dishes are not the typical pattern here. In Norway, brown cheese like no other, is beloved for its uniqueness. It's often eaten on open-faced sandwiches. The cuisine is shaped by the need to preserve. Norway is not only surrounded by the sea, but its climate is such that it demands preservation. The short growing season and cold weather in Norway make it a necessity for survival.Norwegian fish and seafood are unparalleled (无与伦比的). And that's one of the reasons that, smoked, dried, and even sometimes just fresh fish, are so popular in Norway. They eat fish for breakfast, as we mentioned above. They serve it for lunch on open-faced sandwiches.Their cold, wet climate means they get some of the sweetest berries around. The most prized is the cloudberry. The cloudberry only grows in the wild, and picking locations are guarded like family secrets. They're often served simply, or made into jams to preserve them for the many months when cloudberries aren't in season. The Norwegians' love of cake is strong. Norwegians are praised for creating the worl d’s best cake, after all. Looks like even the healthiest nation has a sweet tooth.12. What did the report say about Norway?A. It held reliable data on people's health.B. It set an example for schools worldwide.C. It topped the list as the healthiest country.D. It met its expectations for people's life expectancy.13. In oneclassie experiment, people were showna vertical line and asked to find a line of identical lengthfrom a selection of three. You might think that this is an absurdly easy task, and when people perform it by themselvesthey do it very well. However, psychologists have discoveredthat we are very easily swayed by the opinions of other people when wedo this task in a group. In one study, a group of three peoplewas set up,where two of the people were confederates(同伙)of the experimenter. When the confederates deliberately gave wronganswers, people were often swayed to give the wrong answer also. In fact, 75% of people gave at least one wrong answer, with some people conforming to peer pressure on every occasion. But why do people conform in this way? In an easy task like this, it seems that people donot want to step out of line with the prevailing opinion of the group. On more difficult tasks, people also conform because they lose 〔onfidence in their own ability to make decisions and preferto trust the majority opinion instead.A typical example of this kind of conformity arises when we come across people in distress.Would you help a woman who has been attacked in the street? It turns out that you are much more likely to go to her assistance if you are alone. When other people are also around,a diffusion ofresponsibility occurs. 得夺市安庆阳光实验学校高二英语作业(9)M5U3 Science Versus Nature**时文赏析Egyptian Michael Jackson: The limestone statue has gaunt cheeks, glaring eyes and - most strikingly - a tipless nose.(Agencies)Michael Jackson fans are flocking to a Chicago museum to see a 3,000 year old Egyptian model which looks remarkably like the late king of pop. Staff have been rushed off their feet since Jackson’s death as thousands of mourners visit the exhibition to pay tribute to the star. The limestone statue has gaunt cheeks and - most strikingly - a tipless nose. It is on display at the Inside Ancient Egypt exhibition at The Field Museum in the United States. The bust was bought in Cairo in 1889 and has been on display at the museum for 21 years. But its popularity has soared since Michael Jackson’s death after fans started writing about the ancient statue on internet blogs. The bust was carved during the New Kingdom Period, which ran between 1550 BC to 1050 BC. This was around the same time as famous Egyptians Ramesses and King Tut.The museum’s 4,500 daily visitors are banned from touching or kissing the statue, which is protected behind a glass screen. Astonished fans stand admiring the statue and discussing its likeness with others who have travelled to see it.Darnell Williams, the director of guest relations, said some fans were treating a visit to the museum like a pilgrimage. He said: "The statue has been here for years but interest has beenboostedsince Michael Jackson’s death. People are coming from all over the country to see the statue and compare its likeness to the king of pop.“Many see it as a pilgrimage and as a way to pay tribute to his achievements. He had such a large influence on pop culture. Some fans are so desperate to see the model they are asking staff how to get to the Egypt exhibition before they have even bought their ticket. "They want to touch and kiss the model like it is some sort of God but it is behind a screen to protect it from damage. Once people see it they are astounded and can’t stop talking about its likeness. It really is remarkable."James Phillips, curator of near east and north african exhibits, said little was known about the origins of the model. He said: "The likeness is astonishing but I think it is probably a coincidence. We do not believe Michael Jackson ever visited the museum or saw the exhibit and there is therefore little chance he based his image on it. We believe the model is missing a nose because early Christians or Muslims removed noses from paintings and models to make themnon-human."This was because it was against their religion to depict human beings. In this case it has the effect of making it look more like Michael Jackson. The model was carved during the New Kingdom Period but we do not know who it is or why it was made because there are no hieroglyphics on it." The music video for Jackson’s 1993 hit "Remember the Time" was set in Egypt and starred Eddie Murphy. At the time of the video Jackson looked almost identical to the statue. The model, simply called ’limestone statue of a woman’, measures 25 cm high by 35 cm wide.**What makes the old Egyptian model look more like Michael Jackson?ACloning is suggested as a means of bringing back a relative, usually a child, killed tragically. Some parents can understand that wish, but it must first be recognized that the copy would be a new baby and not the lost child. Here lies the difficulty, for the sad parents are seeking not a new baby but a return of the dead one. Since the original would be fondly remembered as having particular talents and interests, would not the parents expect the copy to be the same? It is possible, however, that the copy would develop quite differently. Is it fair to the new child to be placed in a family with such unnatural expectations?Copying is also suggested as a means by which parents can have the child of their dreams. Couples might choose to have a copy of a film star, baseball player or scientist, depending on their interest. But because personality is only partly the result of genetic inheritance(遗传), conflicts would be sure to arise if the cloned child failed to develop the same interests as the original. What if the copy of Einstein shows no interest in science? Or the baseball player turns to acting? Success also depends upon fortune. What if the child does not live up to the hopes and dreams of the parents simply because of bad luck?Every child should be wanted for itself, as an individual. In making a copy of oneself or some famous person, a parent is deliberately(深思熟虑地)specifying(详细说明) the way he or she wishes that child to develop. In recent years, particularly in the U.S., much importance has been placed on the right of individuals to reproduce in ways that they wish. So I suggest there is a greater need to consider the interests of the child and to reject these proposed uses of cloning.1. What happens to parents in cloning a lost child?A. Parents expect too much from the copy.B. Parents may get a quite different copy.C. Parents are sure to have an identical copy.D. Parents lose the talents of the lost child.2. She recounts in detail how she used to be told to respect her elders and betters. She was taught to speak when she was spoken to and when she went out on her own, she was reminded to say please and thank you. Children in her days, she continues, were expected to be seen and not heard, but these days you are lucky if you ever hear parents telling their children to mind her manners. If you give her the chance she then takes out of her writing desk, the old photograph album which she keeps there, and which she never tires of displaying. Of course when you look at pictures of her parents you feel sure that, with a father as strict looking as that, you too would have been “ seen and not heard”. Besi de him sits his wife, with their children around her; Granny and her elder brothers. It always occurs to me that perhaps those long, stiff, black clothes were so burdensome (heavy) to a little girl that she hadn’t enough breath left to be talkative, let alone mischievous (淘气的). It must have been a dull and lonely life too, for she stayed mainly at home during her childhood, while her brothers were sent to school from an early age. However, my childhood was much freer than Granny’s. I went to school with my brother. I played football with him and his friends. We all spoke a common language, and we got up to the same mischief. I would have died if I had had to stay indoors, wearing tight, stiff clothes.9. The writer thinks that her grandmother _________.A. makes mistakes about the youthB. complains too much about her childhoodC. received good education at schoolD. led an unhappy life when she was a child10.

[典例1](2016·浙江高考,11)Scientists have advanced many theories about whyhuman beings cry tears, none of ________ has been proved.A.whom B.whichC.what D.thatB[如果学生把先行词误认为scientists,容易错选A项。
][典例2]He wrote five novels,two of________translated into English.A.it B.themC.which D.thatB[此题很容易掉进陷阱误选C项,学生误以为后面是非限制性定语从句。
若在translated前加上were,were translated就成了谓语动词,这时才可以选连词which。

类型7| 文化教育(2016·天津高考·C)When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him.His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier.Far happier. These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not.“Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence (能力) and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,”said George Vaillant, the psychologist (心理学家) who made the discovery.“And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”Vaillant's study followed these males in great detail.Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47.Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men's mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores.Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems. The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out asadults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.Working—at any age—is important.Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence—the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this.Yet work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said,“One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one's work.”46.What do we know about John?A.He enjoyed his career and marriage.B.He had few childhood playmates.C.He received little love from his family.D.He was envied by others in his childhood.47.Vaillant's words in Paragraph 2 serve as ________.A.a description of personal values and social valuesB.an analysis of how work was related to competenceC.an example for parents' expectations of their childrenD.an explanation why some boys grew into happy men48.Vaillant's team obtained their findings by ________.A.recording the boys' effort in schoolB.evaluating the men's mental healthC.comparing different sets of scoresD.measuring the men's problem solving ability49.What does the underlined word “sharp” probably mean in Paragraph 4?A.Quick to react.
作者写文章的目的有三:toexpress one's feelings,attitude and ideas;to affectreaders;to inform readers。
可细分为to introduce,describe,explain,inform,analyze,express,convey,argue,encourage,praise,criticize,advocate等。
[例1](2016·全国甲卷·C)Reading can be a social activity.Think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now the website turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group.Members go on the site and register the books they own and would like to share.BookCrossing provides an identification number to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure, traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.Bruce Pederson, the managing director of BookCrossing, says,“The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read.BookCrossing combines both.”Members leave books on park benches and buses,in train stations and coffee shops.Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it.E-mails are then sent to the BookCrossers to keep them updated about where their books have been found.Bruce Pederson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.BookCrossing is part of a trend among people who want to get back to the “real”and not the virtual(虚拟).The site now has more than one million members in more than one hundred thirty-five countries.12.What is the best title for the text?A.Online Reading:A Virtual TourB.Electronic Books:A New TrendC.A Book Group Brings Tradition BackD.A Website Links People through BooksD[主旨大意题之确定标题。

as if (though)引从句,情同wish宾从连。
Although they just met for the first time, they talked as if they ________ (be) friends for many years.
1—But for your timely warning, we ________ (get) into great trouble. —Well, you know we’re friends.
2I was ill that day, otherwise I ________ (take) part in the sports meet. 答案would have taken解析对过去已经发生事情的虚拟,主句用would have done形式。
He ________ his work, otherwise he would not be enjoying himself by the seaside.A.should have completed B.has completedC.would have completed D.can’t have co mpleted答案 B解析otherwise相当于一个虚拟条件,是对真实情况相反的假设,由此我们可以推出:otherwise前应是真实情况,故空白处应该是陈述语气,故答案为B。
Bob would have helped us yesterday, but he________.A.was busy B.is busyC.had been busy D.will be busy答案 A解析句意为:鲍勃昨天本来想帮助我们的,但是他太忙了。
“他太忙了”是一个过去的事实,故用一般过去时。
3.混合型同时对虚拟语气和陈述语气进行考查。
“混合型”常常利用“一词多义”来设计题目。
解题思路分析单词在句中到底表示什么语气。
典例展示The graduate insisted that he ________(send) to the West to teach the children there and that what he chose ________(be) right even though his parents didn’t want him to go.
典例展示—Do you know his address?—No, I also wish I ________ (know) where he lives.
If it were not for/had not been for,but for...,if only...,without
Without electricity, human life ________ (be) quite different today.
If there were no electricity, human life would be quite different today.
1.Maybe if I ________________(study) science, and not literature then,I would be able to give you more help.2.—Where are the children? The dinner’s going to be completely ruined.—I wish they ________(be not) always late.3.I ________________(come) sooner but I didn’t know that they were waiting for me.4.We ________________(arrive) there on time yesterday but for the traffic jam. 5.I ________________________(not go) through that bitter period without your generous help.6.If I ________________(have) time next week,I would go to the party.7.If I ________(be) you,I should go and see the dentist at once.8.If you had arrived at the station ten minutes earlier, you ________________________(catch) the train.9.If he were you, he ________________________(miss) the concert last night. 10.It is requested that Class Two ________(give) a performance at the English evening.Ⅱ. 1.How I wish there are 28 hours a day so that I had more time for fun.________ 2.Had he worked hard years ago, he would become very rich today.________3.If I were a boy again, I will remember that a good skater never tries to skate in two directions at once.________4.But the fact that China are also affected by the global economic crisis, we would have fewer workers now.________5.It might have been done better if you have been more careful.________6.I actually believe that we would be in Xi’an now if you hadn’t caught drunk driving last month.________7.It is high time that we establish an honest and fair system of education.________ 8.Mr. Li, my English teacher, speaks English as if he is an Englishman.________ 9.Tibet is so mysteriously described by some people that I think if only I can go there.________10.I’d rather he goes to the theatre tomorrow.________能力提升Ⅰ. A good modern newspaper is an extraordinary piece of reading. It is remarkable first for what it contains: the range of news from local crime to international politics, from sport to business to fashion to science, and the range of comment and special features(特写) as well, from editorial page to feature articles and interviews to criticism of books, art, theatre and music.A newspaper is even more remarkable for the way one reads it: never completely, never straight through, but always by jumping from here to there,in and out glancing at one piece, reading another article all the way through, reading just a few paragraphs of the text.A good modern newspaper offers a variety to attract many different readers, but far from one reader is interested in what brings this variety together in.One place is its topicality(时事性),its immediate relation to what is happening in your world and your locality now.But immediacy and the speed of production that goes with it mean also that much of what appears in a newspaper has no more than transient(短暂的) value. For all these reasons,no two people really read the same paper: what each person does is to put together out of the pages of that day’s paper, his own selection and sequence, his own newspaper. For all these reasons, reading newspapers efficiently, which means getting what you want from them without missing things you need but without wasting time, demands skill andselfawareness as you modify and apply the techniques of reading.1.A modern newspaper is remarkable for all the following EXCEPT its ________.A.wide coverage B.uniform styleC.speed in reporting news D.popularity2.According to the passage, the reason why no two people really read the same newspaper is that ________.A.people scan for the news they are interested inB.different people prefer different newspapersC.people are not interested in the same kind of newsD.people have different views about what a
